Video: Jon Jones Goes Through ESPN Car Wash Ahead of UFC 197

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones hasn't fought in over 15 months. Ahead of his return this Saturday night at UFC 197, he's accelerated his rivalry with Daniel Cormier to epic proportions, had an opponent switch to Ovince St. Preux and got arrested for drag racing and spent time in jail. Needless to say, Jones has a lot to talk about. On Monday, the Rochester, N.Y., native took to Bristol, Conn., to do the ESPN media car wash, going through show-after-show inside the studios of “The Worldwide Leader.” Between hitting “Mike & Mike,” “First Take,” “His & Hers” and “Face to Face with Hannah Storm,” “Bones” also got the opportunity to discuss potential movie roles, the recent death of Portuguese fighter Joao Claudio in Ireland and what he learned in his absence from the Octagon. Check out Jones' Monday ESPN media engagements after the jump.

Nate Diaz responds to Conor McGregor's decision 'to retire young'

McGregor, who often talks about creating a legacy and leaving the game as one of the greatest of all time, lost for the first time in his UFC career against Diaz at UFC 196. The Stockton, Calif. Fighter submitted McGregor in the second-round of their record-breaking headlining bout, stopping what, at the time, was an almost uncontrollable hype train.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - ‘TUF’ Breaks

Who says that there's no talent coming off of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series? The UFC in Tampa, Florida, on April 16 saw Glover Teixeira clobber Rashad Evans in the first round in a battle of perennial light heavyweight contenders. That knockout loss seems to signal the end or near-end of Evans, the heavyweight winner of “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 2, inside the Octagon. While UFC on Fox 19 may have ushered the former 205-pound champion towards retirement, it also helped put a few newer “Ultimate Fighter” talents on the map. Rose Namajunas fell short in the final of “The Ultimate Fighter 20” to Carla Esparza with the vacant UFC women's strawweight title on the line, but now, “Thug Rose” has risen to No. 6 in the 115-pound rankings and may have earned a second crack at the gold courtesy of a unanimous decision win over Tecia Torres , previously unbeaten as a pro. Meanwhile, Raquel Pennington could not win her division on Season 18, but now the Colorado-based scrapper makes her first top-10 appearance at 135 pounds, courtesy of her split decision win over former UFC title challenger Bethe Correia .

Conor McGregor Out of UFC 200; Promotion Seeking New Opponent for Nate Diaz

It appears that Conor McGregor ’s retirement tweet was no joke after all. On Tuesday, after the featherweight titleholder announced via Twitter that he is walking away from the sport, UFC President Dana White confirmed to ESPN’s “SportsCenter” that McGregor will no longer rematch Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 200 . Despite the fact that McGregor’s announcement preceded the UFC’s by several hours, White told ESPN that it was UFC’s decision to pull McGregor from the card due to the Irishman missing promotional obligations this week in Las Vegas. “We pulled Conor McGregor from UFC 200, and we’re working on other fights right now,” said White. “Conor did not want to come to Las Vegas and film the commercial or be part of any of the marketing that we have. He’s in Iceland training, and it’s not possible.” White attempted to liken the situation to that of Nick Diaz being removed from the main event of UFC 137 after failing to attend a press conference to promote an October 2011 fight with Georges St. Pierre .

Postal Connections: Big Apple Finally Bites

The sport of mixed martial arts on Thursday enjoyed a historic day. While I never thought the MMA ban in New York was as big a deal as some people made it out to be, I can understand why the fans from the state and the Ultimate Fighting Championship are overjoyed after such a long hard-fought battle. With the stroke of his pen, Gov. Andrew Cuomo ended 19 years of exile and opened up one of the biggest -- if not the biggest -- media markets in the world to MMA. We’ll touch on the future of New York MMA as well as a slew of other topics in this week’s Postal Connections mailbag. Without further ado, away we go. I am so excited to finally be able to attend a UFC event in my home state. I am also sad that the corrupt politicians kept my favorite sport out of New York for so long. Hopefully the UFC brings a huge show to MSG this summer so everyone can see what they were missing. -- Nicole P. It is a pretty exciting day, Nicole. The UFC is coming to the Empire State, but you’re going to have to wait a little bit longer than summer to hit Madison Square Garden for a UFC event.

16 Report: Police Investigating Sexual Assault Allegations Made Against B.J. Penn

Police in Hilo, Hawaii, have reportedly launched an investigation into the allegations of sexual assault made against former UFC champion B.J. Penn . Citing unnamed sources, MMAFighting.com on Monday reported that the Hilo Police Department has launched a second-degree sexual assault investigation into the matter, which was made public in February . The incident in question took place in Hilo on Aug. 31, 2015, and allegedly involves Penn and a 29-year-old woman who is the girlfriend of a former BJPenn.com employee. Penn, 37, has denied the allegations and claims that is being extorted. UFC officials commented on the matter in February and, in a statement , said that Penn would not be booked for a fight until “more details” of the incident came to light. The company also said the allegation would be “investigated by an independent party and thoroughly reviewed by the UFC.” Last week, the company officially announced that Penn will return to the Octagon against Dennis Siver at June’s UFC 199 .

The Bottom Line: For Jon Jones, Victory Only Goes So Far

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Jon Jones ’ ascent in MMA has been accompanied by seeming chaos outside the cage. From police run-ins and drugs to personal drama, there has been a long series of embarrassing incidents for the sport’s best pound-for-pound fighter. Last year’s hit-and-run incident and resulting loss of his Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight title was supposed to be the low point that would force Jones to rethink things, but it was followed by additional road incidents and a brief jail stint that undermined that narrative. Viewed in isolation, many -- if not most -- of Jones’ foibles can be explained away as simple immaturity and poor judgment. The problem is the sheer volume of these setbacks, which together create the impression of someone whose life is out of control. Jones, if nothing else, would clearly very much like that general impression to go away.

Boxing’s Greats of the States | Indiana: Tiger Jack Fox

Boxers come from every corner of the globe. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring styles prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series, the spotlight will shine on the best boxer of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. For example, all-time great heavyweight legend Joe Louis was born in Alabama, but he is identified almost universally with Detroit.

The Ultimate Fighting Championship took a major hit on Tuesday afternoon when Conor McGregor took to social media to announce his retirement. Koscheck-Daley 2 Co-Headlines Bellator 158; ‘Venom’ Page, Linton Vassell Also Set for London

The heavyweight main event between Kimbo Slice and James Thompson won’t be the only rematch on the bill when Bellator MMA makes its English debut this summer. The California-based organization on Monday announced that Josh Koscheck and Paul Daley will co-headline Bellator 158 in a three-round welterweight affair. The event takes place July 16 at O2 Arena in London. Koscheck and Daley’s first meeting came inside the Octagon for a co-headlining clash at UFC 113 in May 2010. Former college wrestling standout Koscheck used his grappling skills to control and frustrate Daley, who lashed out after the final bell with a late punch to Koscheck’s face. Daley was booted from the UFC in the aftermath, but the bad blood between he and Koscheck has never dissipated. Koscheck will enter the bout in desperate need of a win, as the 38-year-old is currently mired in a five-fight losing streak, the worst of his career. Daley will look to keep rolling after winning his last five, including three straight inside the Bellator cage.

Erick Sanchez, Jonathan Martinez Score Slick Subs at Combate Americas in Los Angeles

North prevailed against south in the all-California main event of Combate Americas “Road to the Championship 3,” as Sacramento featherweight Erick Sanchez put on an impressive showing against local favorite Mike Segura . The fight topped an eight-bout bill on Monday at Exchange LA, a night club in the former Los Angeles Stock Exchange building. A left hook to the jaw floored Segura only three seconds into the opening round, but the lanky Subfighter MMA representative regained his wits and struggled to reclaim guard as Sanchez attacked from above. Sanchez was relentless and gave his opponent no space to escape, attaching himself to Segura’s back in a scramble and applying a deep rear-naked choke to coax a tap after only 50 seconds. Sanchez, a Team Alpha Male product who was cornered by Justin Buchholz and Danny Castillo, ran his record to 7-2 with his third straight finish. Segura, meanwhile, fell to 4-2 in what was the most high-profile matchup of his young career. In the 130-pound co-main event, Texas-based Angeleno Jonathan Martinez was taken down early but used crafty guard work to turn the position into an advantage.

Opinion: Do We Need a GSP Comeback?

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. After taking a two-year hiatus, former welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre appears to be mulling a comeback to the Ultimate Fighting Championship . Although there had been speculation as to whether he would be willing to step into the Octagon again, his appearance at UFC 196 and a few interviews in which he has seemed more optimistic than ever about making a comeback are signs that point in the right direction. All things considered, do we need a GSP comeback? It’s an interesting question because the UFC hasn’t necessarily missed St. Pierre since he decided to semi-retire from competition after defending his title against Johny Hendricks in November 2013. While he won a decision, he absorbed a lot of punishment and promptly decided to vacate the title he had defended nine consecutive times. Since his departure, the welterweight division has been more exciting than it has ever been.

Jon Jones knows his greatest rival are his own demons outside the Octagon

"The only thing I need to do is do the right things outside of the Octagon. I could never fight again and be put in the Hall of Fame and I'm not saying that to sound arrogant but we all know it's true," Jones said on the UFC 197 conference call just recently. "I have to continue to do the right things outside of the Octagon. That's it. Me retiring and nobody ever hearing about me in the news again, that's a huge victory for me. I'm going to try my hardest to make sure that happens.

Fedor Emelianenko to Face Fabio Maldonado at Rizin FF Event on June 17

Fedor Emelianenko ’s comeback tour will continue against Fabio Maldonado at a Rizin Fighting Federation on June 17, according to a report from Brazilian media outlet Combate . Sherdog.com on Sunday confirmed the matchup with a source close to the bout, following an initial report from Brazilian outlet Combate . The Japanese promotion has yet to officially announced the matchup, which will reportedly take place in St. Petersburg, Russia, and will be contested at heavyweight. After a retirement that lasted more than three years, Emelianenko returned to action at Rizin’s New Year’s Eve Event, where he forced Jaideep Singh to submit to punches 3:02 into the opening frame of their bout. “The Last Emperor” has won his last four fights and owns a 35-4 career record. Maldonado, meanwhile, was released from the UFC following back-to-back losses to Corey Anderson and Quinton Jackson in 2015. While the 36-year-old Brazilian competed primarily at 205 pounds during his Octagon tenure, he did face Stipe Miocic at heavyweight in May 2014, losing via technical knockout in 35 seconds.

Diego Brandao Arrested on Four Felony Charges for Alleged Strip Club Incident

Diego Brandao allegedly fought with employees outside an Albuquerque, N.M., strip club before returning to the club and threatening the group with a firearm last Thursday evening. The UFC featherweight was arrested on Friday on three felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. He was released on Saturday from the Metropolitan Detention Center on $15,000 bond; The Bernalillo County District Attorney’s office will decide if it will pursue the case against Brandao. According to an arrest warrant, Brandao appeared to be intoxicated and was arguing with a DJ inside Knockouts in downtown Albuquerque. Brandao left the bar and was denied re-entry due to his behavior. Knockouts employee Anthony Romero said that Brandao then “attempted to force his way in by throwing punches at him and other employees at the front door.” Patrick Otero, another employee, and Lavon King, a customer, attempted to assist Romero in keeping Brandao from re-entering the club. Brandao continued to throw punches at the group until Romero was able to push Brandao out and lock the door, according to the warrant.
