What to Watch For: Bellator 178

Perhaps they are shooting for a best-of-seven series in this rivalry. Daniel Straus will face Patricio Freire for a fourth time when he defends his Bellator MMA featherweight championship against the Brazilian “Pitbull” in the Bellator 178 headliner on Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. Their five-round battle anchors a four-fight main card that airs live on Spike TV (9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT). On the sidelines for more than a year, Straus has not fought since he reclaimed the 145-pound title with a five-round unanimous decision over Freire at Bellator 145 in November 2015. The 32-year-old American Top Team export has compiled nine wins across his past 11 outings, his run highlighted by victories over Pat Curran , Henry Corrales , Justin Wilcox , Alvin Robinson and Marlon Sandro . A decorated high school wrestler in his native Ohio, Straus owns an 11-3 mark in Bellator ( live odds ). Freire last competed at Bellator 160 in August, when a leg injury resulted in a technical knockout loss to former Ultimate Fighting Championship and World Extreme Cagefighting lightweight titleholder Benson Henderson .

The Bottom Line: Best Ever? Prove It, ‘Mighty Mouse’

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * After an impressive rout of Wilson Reis in the UFC on Fox 24 main event on Saturday, Demetrious Johnson was unusually outspoken in his post-fight interview. The longtime flyweight titleholder proclaimed himself the greatest UFC champion ever and said he wants a seven-figure payday for an eventual fight against the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s bantamweight king. Johnson is wise to recognize that no one else will champion his cause as steadfastly as he can and that he is unlikely to receive gifts for which he does not ask. However, he’s still missing the big picture. Johnson wouldn’t be doing the UFC a favor by taking a fight with the bantamweight champion. The reverse is much closer to the truth. That fight is precisely what he should be lobbying for if he’s serious about making more money and solidifying his legacy ( Vegas odds ). Johnson remains a tremendous talent as a fighter, but he’s not exactly in a great position to be making financial demands as literally the worst draw in modern UFC history.

Sherdog’s Top 10: Most Prolific Submission Fighters in UFC History - Top 10

Nothing in MMA signifies defeat quite like the submission, an open, visible and at times audible concession that the other man was the better man. Since the day the Ultimate Fighting Championship was born into existence, the threat of the submission has had an undeniable presence in the sport. It started with Royce Gracie at UFC 1 and progressed from there. Strikers and wrestlers were forced to adapt, to learn to defend their necks, their arms and their legs for fear of having a limb snapped, a joint blown apart or the blood cut off from their brains. Nearly 25 years later, submissions still have a special place in MMA. Never was that more apparent than at UFC on Fox 24 , where Rose Namajunas took out Michelle Waterson with a rear-naked choke in the co-main event before Demetrious Johnson followed suit by vanquishing Wilson Reis with an armbar in the headliner. Submission artists are also cumulative in nature, as evidenced by the fighters present in the latest installment of the Sherdog Top 10 series . These 10 competitors have attempted the most submission

Eduard Folayang: A Product of Perseverance

Each line of her face seems to tell a tale. Mercedes Folayang wears the weathered look of a mother wary of the cruelest fate: losing a child. Maybe it is why she was always extra watchful each time her son, Eduard, would cough. Maybe it explains why she would hold a vigil over him as he slept, curling his little hand inside of hers while assuring herself his tiny chest was moving. Maybe it is why every time Eduard got sick or looked fatigued, she was right there next to him, swaying him back and forth with her eyes shut, mumbling prayers and hoping the ailment that afflicted her five other children would not invade him. Maybe it is why, until very recently, the proud, strong Filipino woman did not want to attend any of her son’s fights, always fearful something would harm him. One look at Eduard Folayang and it becomes hard to imagine anything penetrating his veneer. How can one pierce oak -- honed and polished in the hilly, rugged terrain of Baguio City in the northern Philippines, where his Cordilleran tribe roots stem? Folayang, 33, pulled off what many mixed martial arts experts call one of the greatest upsets in Asian MMA history in November when he defeated Shinya Aoki to win the One Championship lightweight title at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore.

Artem Lobov’s Mystical Connections

It might surprise the mixed martial arts universe to hear that Conor McGregor still has a hands-on approach when his teammates are primed for big fights. Ahead of his five-round clash with Cub Swanson in the UFC Fight Night 108 main event ( live odds ) this Saturday at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, Artem Lobov trumpeted the Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight titleholder’s impact on his preparation. McGregor has long been revered for his ability to break down opponents, and Lobov claims his SBG Ireland stablemate offered plenty of pearls of wisdom in relation to Swanson. “He knows Cub’s style very well,” Lobov told “He is very familiar with his fights, so he had a lot of pointers for me going into this fight.” Given the buzz surrounding a potential boxing match between McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr., it should come as little surprise that “The Notorious” one focused primarily on hands and footwork with Lobov. “At the start of this camp, I did a lot of boxing sparring with Conor,” he said. “Just a few days ago, I was over in his house for a training session, and he gave me a lot of points to work on after it with my boxing.

BJPENN.COM Radio Ep. 29 // Ian McCall | Nate Quarry | Jessica Eye |

8:15PM ET- Kicking off tonights show we are joined by UFC Flyweight Ian McCall. “Uncle Creepy” has been the victim of some seriously bad luck in recent years. Having not fought since January of 2015, McCall has been scheduled to compete numerous times but the MMA Gods have not looked kindly upon his attempts. A string of injuries sustained by himself and/or opponents, or falling ill just days before a fight, nothing seems to give. We’ll get the latest on his possible return to action and if this series of misfortune will deter him from ever fighting again.

Dana White: Ronda Rousey Hasn’t Told Me She’s Retiring, But UFC Return Unlikely

At least for now, Ronda Rousey hasn’t officially called it a career. But according to UFC President Dana White, a return to the Octagon doesn’t seem likely at this point. “I don’t think [she’s coming back],” White recently told TMZ Sports . “She hasn’t retired. She hasn’t told me she’s retiring…She’s actually enjoying herself. She’s having fun. She made a lot of money and she’s enjoying it now.” Rousey returned to action after more than a year hiatus at UFC 207 on Dec. 30, when she suffered a 48-second technical knockout loss to reigning 135-pound queen Amanda Nunes . That came on the heels of Rousey’s second-round KO loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193 in November 2015, a defeat that ended her 12-fight unbeaten streak and shattered her aura of invincibility. Since the loss to Nunes, Rousey has maintained a low profile, much like she did after suffering her first career setback. However, “Rowdy” has found opportunities outside of the cage. The Olympic judoka has made appearances in a few blockbuster films including Expendables 3, Furious 7 and Entourage. She also recently participated in filming for a role in the hit NBC series “Blindspot.

Dustin Poirier: Inside The Circle Where It Matters

Dustin Poirier's evolution through the fight game has taken place in the public eye since he stepped foot in the WEC cage, and his progress has been well-documented through film and highlight reels alike. At 21 years old, the Louisiana native hit bigger stages in 2010 and has spent the past eight years leveling opposition and scrapping his way up multiple divisional ladders. And while there have been setbacks and adversities to overcome, the bounce back has always been part of what makes Poirier who he is. The hard-knock struggle forged resilience inside of Poirier, and he's found a way to capture that internal fire to use at will. What used to break loose and produce either a memorable finish or become his undoing is now in his control, and that particular word is at the center of Poirier's world heading into his showdown with Eddie Alvarez at UFC 211 in Dallas on May 13. Simply put: Whatever falls within his control represents the elements he nurtures with time, sweat and sacrifices. Everything else is just everything else. "In the past I've gotten worked up with rankings, where I'm at on the card, implications if I win the fight, but none of that matters without the fight," Poirier told FloCombat in an exclusive interview.

Demetrious Johnson fighting in the weakest division main reason he is not...

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Playing the Fox Card

With flyweight and pound-for-pound king Demetrious Johnson closing as high as a -1100 favorite entering his UFC on Fox 24 headliner against Wilson Reis on April 15, no one expected to see a new UFC 125-pound champion crowned in Kansas City, Missouri; those expectations were on the money. “Mighty Mouse” assaulted Reis for almost 15 minutes before coolly armbarring him to notch his UFC record-tying 10th consecutive title defense. In this edition of the rankings, Johnson does not have to move a muscle, retaining his No. 1 spot at flyweight. However, the rest of the UFC on Fox 24 main card was filled with up-and-coming fighters seizing the moment on primetime network television. In the co-feature, Rose Namajunas earned her fourth win in her last five bouts by dominating former Invicta Fighting Championships titleholder Michelle Waterson , as she landed a nasty head kick and followed up with a rear-naked choke in the second round. As a result, “Thug Rose” is on the move again, rising one spot on our 115-pound list, from fifth to fourth.

Confirmed: UFC fighter Tae Hyun Bang involved in big fight-fixing scandal |

In the buildup to the fight, Bang got involved with some gangsters, who convinced him to throw the fight. These gangsters, who the South Korean police are calling “gambling brokers”, then bet a massive 2 billion Won (almost $2 million USD) on Kuntz. Bang, meanwhile, was paid 100 million Won to take the fall. He then bet half of this sum (roughly $44,000 USD) on Kuntz. All in all, it is estimated that the nefarious parties involved in this underhanded betting scandal wagered close to $2 million USD on Kuntz. This massive betting on Kuntz is what swung the odds so significantly in his favor.

Bellator 178’s Ed Ruth Hoping for Step Up in Competition By End of 2017

While some developing fighters might view more rounds as valuable cage experience, Ed Ruth would prefer to clock out as quickly as possible. Thus far, the three-time NCAA national champion wrestler at Penn State University has accomplished that goal, finishing both of his first two Bellator MMA opponents inside of a round. The way Ruth sees it, the longer each individual fight lasts, the shorter his career will be. “The biggest takeaway [from my career thus far] is I want to go in there and finish these fights as quickly as possible. A lot of people want to be in there for a while, but if you’ve got a chance to wrap the match up real quick you might as well wrap it up,” Ruth told “When you’re getting hit with four-ounce gloves and the intention of the guy is to knock you out, you don’t want to be in those prolonged battles. It just takes away from you in the future.” Ruth will make his third appearance with the California-based promotion on Friday at Bellator 178 , when he faces David Mundell in a preliminary middleweight bout.

After being discovered on “Dana White: Lookin’ For a Fight,” Jared Gordon will make his Octagon debut against Michel Quinones at UFC 211 .
