Who's the best UFC champion in history? The title matchup is set

(Disclaimer: Fighter seeding was done largely based on total number of title defenses. To make the field, fighters had to have had at least two successful title defenses and/or have held the rare distinction of being a two-division champion. Two fighters qualified, but in part through interim title fight wins. In that case, Renan Barao and Andrei Arlovski met in a play-in game, and Barao got into the field based on one more win in a title fight than Arlovski.)

5 Things You Might Not Know About Alexander Gustafsson

Alexander Gustafsson was a well-respected contender when he challenged Jon Jones for the Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight title at UFC 165 on Sept. 21, 2013 in Toronto. Although he lost a unanimous decision to “Bones,” Gustafsson entered a new competitive tax bracket by giving Jones all he could handle across five rounds. “The Mauler” remains one of the sport’s premier fighters at 205 pounds despite being shelved by a shoulder injury that required surgery. When he returns, Gustafsson figures to position himself for a rematch with reigning light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier , who defeated him by split decision two-plus years ago. Until then, here are five things you might not know about the Swede: 1. He took up boxing at an early age. Gustafsson was a boxer before he turned to mixed martial arts, starting at the age of 10. He won the Swedish national youth light heavyweight championship in 2003 and three amateur tournaments over a two-year period (2008-09). Gustafsson also partook in shoot-fighting -- a martial art that mixes muay Thai and catch wrestling -- and compiled a 5-1 record with four knockouts.

Darren Till Expects Stephen Thompson to Be the ‘Most Interesting Fight of My Life’

Darren Till vs. Stephen Thompson recently became official for UFC Fight Night 130 in Liverpool, and Till already has some very specific stakes in mind for the matchup. “I think it’s gonna be the most interesting fight of my life, just because of his fight IQ and my own,” Till said on the “Obviously Fight Talk” podcast. “So let’s see who wins. Let’s see who is the best striker in the division. Now it’s time to see.” Till improve to 16-0-1 as a professional with a first-round technical knockout of Donald Cerrone in his most recent appearance at UFC Fight Night 118 this past October. The Liverpool native is unbeaten in five Octagon appearances, with a draw against Nicolas Dalby in October 2015 the only blemish on his ledger thus far. The 25-year-old welterweight doesn’t agree with the notion that it might be too soon for him to take on an opponent as experienced as Thompson, who twice challenged Tyron Woodley for welterweight gold. “In terms of earliness, striking-wise I don’t think it’s too early because of been striking all my life and so has he,” Till said.

Kongo enters the matchup on a five-bout winning streak. Most recently, the UFC veteran earned a split decision over Augusto Sakai at Bellator 179 this past May. Prior to that, the 29-year-old Californian had scored back-to-back knockout wins over Sergei Kharitonov and Roy Boughton .

Vitor Belfort Would Gladly Reconsider Retirement for a Large Payday

Vitor Belfort has been one of the most feared fighters throughout his career, using devastating power coupled with ridiculous hand speed to run roughshod over his opponents. However, in the eyes of many, his career has been overshadowed by his well-publicized use of Testosterone Replacement Therapy. Belfort, who has amassed 40 professional fights in his career, (26-13 & 1 NC) made his debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship back at UFC 12 in February 1997, fighting the likes of David Abbott , Randy Couture and Wanderlei Silva in his early days. He even took a catchweight (210) bout with Alistair Overeem back in 2006. However in the past few years, “The Phenom” has been much less effective inside the Octagon and has decided to hang up his four ounce gloves with one last fight against former UFC lightweight champion Lyoto Machida on May 12 at UFC 224 . However, it seems that the Brazilian could be lured back if offered a large financial package. Belfort recently talked to on what it would take to keep him employed on the UFC roster.

Khabib Nurmagomedov opens as 5-to-1 betting favorite over Max Holloway at UFC 223

“Holloway has good takedown defense, but Nurmagomedov takes people down whether they have good takedown defense or not. I’m opening this price as steep as it is because of all the factors that are coming into play, including the fact that Nurmagomedov was already a -270 betting favorite against Tony Ferguson, who is bigger, stronger and a better wrestler than Holloway. With Holloway taking this on short notice, moving up a weight class and coming off an injury that forced him out of a UFC 222 headlining bout, I’m opening Nurmagomedov as a -505 favorite with the comeback on Holloway at +365.”

Tony Ferguson ‘Hurt, Frustrated, Angry’ After Freak Accident Forces UFC 223 Exit

Tony Ferguson is understandably devastated after a knee injury forced his withdrawal from the UFC 223 headliner against Khabib Nurmagomedov less than one week before their fight. “Words can’t explain how hurt, frustrated, angry and in disbelief I am right now,” Ferguson wrote on Instagram. “I was completing my UFC pre-fight media obligations on Friday. I had an accident on a studio set that tore a ligament in my knee. “My doctor and the UFC doctor both said I can’t fight and one is saying I need surgery, so I will see a specialist to make a final determination on how I can heal up and get back in there to defend my belt ASAP.” I'm told the injury to Tony Ferguson was literally caused by a trip. The freak accident of all freak accidents. He was walking, saw someone he wasn't expecting to see, veered sharply to say hello and tripped. — Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) April 1, 2018 As a result, Max Holloway will face Khabib Nurmagomedov for the 155-pound championship in the new UFC 223 headliner on Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Dana White: Conor McGregor Wasn’t An Option to Replace Tony Ferguson at UFC 223

While it might have seemed like a logical move, Conor McGregor was not offered a short-notice fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223 after Tony Ferguson withdrew from the contest due to a knee injury. Instead, that honor went to featherweight champion Max Holloway , who will attempt to join McGregor as the only UFC fighters to hold two belts simultaneously when he meets Nurmagomedov in the new UFC 223 headliner at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday. According to UFC President Dana White, the promotion did not consider McGregor an option, even though the Irishman had offered to step in for Holloway against Frankie Edgar at UFC 222. "I don't think Conor McGregor could make the weight on six days' notice. That's a tough weight cut for him," White told . "And Conor is not the guy I want to throw in as a late replacement fighter. He's a guy I want to make a fight with and have the right amount of time to promote the fight. "I think Conor could return in September, and it could be against one of these guys.

Darren Till will prove he's "the best striker" by finishing Stephen Thompson in under 15 minutes |

“Striking-wise, I don’t think it’s too early because I’ve been striking my whole life and so has he,” Till said. “I wouldn’t say [it’s early] in terms of that and even in MMA, I wouldn’t say his wrestling caliber is any better than mine, or his ground game. I know he’s got some good training partners, Chris Weidman and that, but I don’t see where he is better than me anywhere. I just think my striking is better than his and I’m going to beat him.”

10 fights that shaped UFC's lightweight division – from Pulver-Penn to McGregor-Alvarez

Since then, the lightweight division has gone through trials and tribulations like no other UFC weight class, taking four official tries to get it off the ground. Still, the fighters found ways to persevere, and the weight class produced talent that helped open many doors for growth in the modern era. In fact, the 155-pound stable has arguably been the deepest populated division in the UFC for the past decade, consistently providing amazing fights for us to sink our teeth into each year. At UFC 223 on April 7 , we get our next major lightweight attraction: interim champ Tony Ferguson (23-3 MMA, 13-1 UFC) vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov (25-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) for the undisputed belt.

When she got knocked out by Holly Holm in November of 2015 and then again a year later by Amanda Nunes, the critics’ voices only became amplified. The calls of “I told you so” came in hot and heavy. Dana White on Mayweather to UFC Rumors: ‘I’m Interested, and He’s Obviously Interested’

It seems that a week can’t go by without some kind of talk regarding Floyd Mayweather ’s potential move to the UFC. Most recently, UFC President Dana White weighed in on the matter during a brief interview with TMZ Sports . “I’m interested, and obviously he’s interested,” White said. “The last time we were both interested, you saw what happened.” White, of course, is referencing the Aug. 26 boxing match between Mayweather and Conor McGregor at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Mayweather announced his retirement from boxing following a 10th-round technical knockout victory over the UFC lightweight champion. “Money” has since confirmed that he is applying for an MMA license . Considering that Mayweather and McGregor have continued to trade barbs on social media, it would seem that a rematch between the two rivals – this time in the Octagon – would be the most lucrative option. “Who knows? But, yeah, possibly Conor,” White said. “I know Conor wants it.” It isn’t the first time that White has mentioned interest in signing Mayweather.

Who is the Best UFC Lightweight of All Time? |

So we move on to Benson Henderson. He is probably the toughest to discount out of the men that made the shortlist due to his longevity, performances and level of opposition. He was a dominant WEC lightweight champion who beat the likes of Jamie Varner and Donald Cerrone (twice), before losing the belt to Anthony Pettis. Following that, he came to the UFC and went on a seven fight winning streak in which he won the title from Edgar and dominated Nate Diaz. However, the same critique of Edgar applies to Henderson too. Out of those seven wins two were very close, and some would say controversial, decisions over Edgar, and one was a close split decision over Gilbert Melendez. He then also lost to Pettis (again) before winning another split decision over Josh Thomson. So overall, in Henderson’s biggest fights, he generally won but won hotly contested decisions, not dominant victories or definitive finishes like Khabib and Ferguson.
