By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night 128

Faced with a common opponent, Kevin Lee did his best to outdo Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC Fight Night 128 . While he faced a harrowing moment courtesy of a spinning heel kick in the third round, Lee might have done exactly that, as he finished Edson Barboza via doctor’s stoppage 2:18 into the fifth round of their headlining bout at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., on Saturday night. While a title shot might not be forthcoming for “The Motown Phenom,” he bounced back nicely from a loss to Tony Ferguson in an interim title bout this past October. At the very least, he probably made Nurmagomedov take notice. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 128, with statistics courtesy of Related » UFC Atlantic City Round-by-Round Scoring 142: Significant strikes landed by Lee against Barboza. That included advantages of 40 to 4 in round one, 34 to 7 in round two and 38 to 5 in round four. By comparison, the Brazilian landed 51 significant strikes. 233: Total strikes landed by Lee. Barboza, meanwhile, landed just 64.

Meanwhile, first brought word of the Ngannou-Lewis matchup. UFC 226 takes place on July 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas as part of the promotion’s International Fight Week. The card is headlined by a heavyweight title fight between reigning champ Stipe Miocic and 205-pound king Daniel Cormier . Holloway nearly had a shot at becoming a two-division champion when he agreed to face Khabib Nurmagomedov on short notice for the lightweight belt at UFC 223, but the Hawaiian was ultimately deemed medically unfit to compete due to weight cut issues. “Blessed” last appeared at UFC 218, where he made his first official defense of the featherweight strap with a third-round stoppage of Jose Aldo .

UFC Fighters React to Kevin Lee's Domination over Edson Barboza in Atlantic City - MMA Imports

Fighters have decided to come forward with their thoughts concerning the highly anticipated UFC main event that took place over the weekend. Now fight fans can see what many of the UFC’s competitors had to say.

Kevin Lee: I'll answer questions about Khabib Nurmagomedov that Dustin Poirier, Eddie Alvarez can't

“Here’s the thing: Eddie was too fat to take a fight less than a month ago (at UFC 223),” Lee told MMAjunkie post-fight. “When you say something like that and you do that, your opportunity pass you by. The man already had his shot, and he lost it, and done lost it and lost it embarrassingly. It is what it is. He was too fat a while ago. If he want the work, he can get it. Dustin, if the folks want to see Dustin then they will, but I don’t feel like he raise as many question that really need to be answered.

Jon Jones Makes Promise to Alexander Gustafsson: ‘You Will Never Beat Me’

According to Jon Jones , Alexander Gustafsson will never do better than his near miss against the former light heavyweight champion in their classic bout at UFC 165. On that September 2013 evening, Jones struggled early, then rallied late for a thrilling five-round decision victory over “The Mauler” in what remains the most difficult test of his UFC tenure. Gustafsson recently appeared on Joe Rogan’s podcast and admitted that beating Jones would be more significant than winning the UFC light heavyweight title. “It was really tough because everybody was saying, ‘You’re winning this fight.’ It was just right there at the goal line. I didn’t really pass that goal line at all,” Gustafsson said. “It was tough. It’s a really good experience for me. The fight is a highlight in my career, in my life, for sure. “Winning over Jon Jones is bigger than taking the belt. The guy is such a beast…Look at what he did to [ Daniel Cormier ].” Jones is currently awaiting a ruling from USADA after being fined $205,000 and having his license revoked by the California State Athletic commission for a failed drug test at UFC 214 last July.

UFC Fight Night 128 Prelims: Corey Anderson Grabs Much-Needed Win Against Patrick Cummins

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- He needed this, and he knew it. It had been some time since Corey Anderson had his hand raised in the Octagon. Precisely 501 days, which amounts to roughly 43,286,400 seconds, since Anderson stopped Sean O'Connell in two rounds on Dec. 9, 2016. Anderson, the UFC No. 10-ranked light heavyweight, lost twice in 2017, and feared his stock was dropping. He had the perfect foil to snap his two-fight losing skid against Patrick Cummins (10-5) -- and it’s what he did. Anderson (10-4) had his way with Cummins from the beginning, swelling his right eye in the first and pounding that weak area in the second, causing a small cut to hemorrhage blood. After repeated takedowns, Anderson coasted in the third on his way to a unanimous 30-26 (twice) and 30-27 victory on the UFC Fight Night 128 undercard from Boardwalk Hall, the first time the Ultimate Fighting Championship has been to Atlantic City’s fabled arena since UFC 53 in 2005. “That went 100 percent according to the game plan,” Anderson said of his victory over Cummins.

Kevin Lee Busts Up Edson Barboza in UFC Fight Night 128 Headliner

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Edson Barboza and Kevin Lee both had a little something to prove Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 128 . Both were coming off losses. Both had to regain the thrust that their careers lost. Both needed to prove they could beat a legitimate contender. Lee accomplished his mission. He manhandled Barboza, and with the exception of a scary moment in the third round, dominating most of the scheduled five-round lightweight showdown before 9,541 ($923,720 gate) in Atlantic City’s fabled Boardwalk Hall, which was the first time that the UFC had been there since UFC 53 on Feb. 4, 2005. Lee (17-3) had Barboza on his back almost 80-percent of the time, and opened a severe gash over his right eye in the fifth, which forced referee Keith Peterson to stop it at the advice of the ringside doctor at 2:18 of the round. “I said before this fight, mental strength was going to be the key,” Lee said. “I wanted to go all five rounds and show my complete game. I feel I did that. I did a little southpaw, out-boxed him and stopped him in the fifth.

Ref Marc Goddard Addresses Controversial Ruling in Ricky Simon vs. Merab Dvalishvili Bout

Somehow he didn't tap — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) April 22, 2018 When the third round horn sounded to signal the conclusion of bantamweight bout between Merab Dvalishvili and Ricky Simon at UFC Fight Night 128 , it initially appeared that Dvalishvili had just barely survived to win a decision. In the waning moments of the bout, Simon locked in a tight mounted guillotine. However, Dvalishvili squirmed and bicycled his legs for approximately one minute, never tapping to the maneuver. When the horn sounded and Simon let go of the hold, it wasn’t completely clear at first whether Dvalishvili was still conscious. After some deliberation by officials from the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, referee Liam Kerrigan ruled that Simon had won via technical submission at the 5:00 mark of round three. Veteran official Marc Goddard, who helped the commission make a final ruling, explained the decision during an interview on Fox Sports 1 following the event. “I think it was pretty clear at the end of the fight, maybe even before, when the bell sounded, Dvalishvili .

Manager: Merab Dvalishvili likely to appeal UFC Atlantic City loss to Ricky Simon, wants rematch

“Everyone else might have been confused – I wasn’t,” Simon said. “I was choking him hard with everything I had, I was trying to stay calm in that guillotine and I felt him go limp there. I stood over his limp body at the end. I saw his eyes roll back. … I was yelling at the ref, ‘He’s out! He’s out! If you want me to keep squeezing the neck I’m going to.’ I felt him, he was out.”

UFC Fight Night 128 Post-Mortem: Atlantic City Mauling

UFC Fight Night 128 marked a contest between two lightweight contenders looking to bounce back: Edson Barboza attempting to erase the memory of dropping a lopsided unanimous decision to Khabib Nurmagomedov in December and Kevin Lee searching to validate the hype following a submission loss to Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight title in October. Finally, when the two were locked in the cage in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Lee answered all the questions critics had concerning his status as a contender and cemented himself as a top lightweight who may be destined for stardom. The gameplan was simple for Lee; get within range and land takedowns early and often and look to beat Barboza up on the mat, where he and his team believed he was vastly superior to his Brazilian foe. Lee was successful getting takedowns throughout the contest and within 40 seconds into the opening frame, he had Barboza on his back where he systematically broke the kickboxer down. The lone shining moment for Barboza came early in the third round, where he landed his signature spinning heel kick, bouncing it off of Lee’s noggin, turning his legs to rubber.
