By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night 128

Faced with a common opponent, Kevin Lee did his best to outdo Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC Fight Night 128 . While he faced a harrowing moment courtesy of a spinning heel kick in the third round, Lee might have done exactly that, as he finished Edson Barboza via doctor’s stoppage 2:18 into the fifth round of their headlining bout at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., on Saturday night. While a title shot might not be forthcoming for “The Motown Phenom,” he bounced back nicely from a loss to Tony Ferguson in an interim title bout this past October. At the very least, he probably made Nurmagomedov take notice. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 128, with statistics courtesy of Related » UFC Atlantic City Round-by-Round Scoring 142: Significant strikes landed by Lee against Barboza. That included advantages of 40 to 4 in round one, 34 to 7 in round two and 38 to 5 in round four. By comparison, the Brazilian landed 51 significant strikes. 233: Total strikes landed by Lee. Barboza, meanwhile, landed just 64.

‘Shogun’ Rua vs. Volkan Oezdemir Rebooked for UFC Fight Night Hamburg Main Event

Mauricio Rua vs. Volkan Oezdemir has a new date and venue. The light heavyweight clash that was previously scheduled for UFC Fight Night 129 has been rebooked to headline UFC Fight Night 134 in Hamburg, Germany. Promotion officials announced the change on Monday. The matchup was pulled from the UFC’s May 19 trip to Chile due to ongoing legal issues for Oezdemir, who is facing a third-degree felony battery charge for allegedly knocking a man unconscious outside a Florida bar. UFC Fight Night 134 takes place at Barclaycard Arena on July 22. The event is expected to air on Fox Sports 1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass. Rua hasn’t competed frequently of late but has won three straight bouts over the past three years. “Shogun” last appeared at UFC Fight Night 106, where he earned a third-round TKO over Gian Villante on March 11, 2017. The 36-year-old Brazilian has also bested Corey Anderson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira during his current streak. Oezdemir burst upon the scene in 2017 with victories over Ovince St.

UFC Fight Night 128 Post-Mortem: Atlantic City Mauling

UFC Fight Night 128 marked a contest between two lightweight contenders looking to bounce back: Edson Barboza attempting to erase the memory of dropping a lopsided unanimous decision to Khabib Nurmagomedov in December and Kevin Lee searching to validate the hype following a submission loss to Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight title in October. Finally, when the two were locked in the cage in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Lee answered all the questions critics had concerning his status as a contender and cemented himself as a top lightweight who may be destined for stardom. The gameplan was simple for Lee; get within range and land takedowns early and often and look to beat Barboza up on the mat, where he and his team believed he was vastly superior to his Brazilian foe. Lee was successful getting takedowns throughout the contest and within 40 seconds into the opening frame, he had Barboza on his back where he systematically broke the kickboxer down. The lone shining moment for Barboza came early in the third round, where he landed his signature spinning heel kick, bouncing it off of Lee’s noggin, turning his legs to rubber.

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Barboza vs. Lee’

This was the kind of star-making performance that Kevin Lee has long sought. “The Motown Phenom” mauled former Ring of Combat titleholder Edson Barboza across 20-plus minutes, kept his name on a short list of top-shelf Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweights and forced a fifth-round stoppage in the UFC Fight Night 128 main event on Saturday at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Having suffered a horrendous cut above his right eye, Barboza bowed out 2:18 into Round 5. Outside of a spinning heel kick that set Lee on skates in the third round, Barboza offered little in the way of meaningful offense. According to FightMetric figures, Lee outlanded the Brazilian by wide margins in terms of total strikes, 233-64, and significant strikes, 142-51. He secured four takedowns, executed 11 guard passes and battered Barboza with a sustained barrage of ground-and-pound that led to the finish. Lee was particularly dominant in the first, second and fourth rounds. In the aftermath of UFC Fight Night “Barboza vs.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Motown on the Rise

Kevin Lee sent a message to the rest of the lightweight division in the UFC Fight Night 128 headliner. “The Motown Phenom” overwhelmed Edson Barboza with takedowns and vicious ground-and-pound, survived one harrowing spinning back kick and ultimately earned a fifth-round stoppage of his Brazilian opponent. Perhaps the only blemish on Lee’s performance was his inability to make weight one day prior. Still, thanks to the finish, something Khabib Nurmagomedov couldn’t do against Barboza in a three-round affair, Lee vaults to No. 5 in our lightweight rankings. Meanwhile, Frankie Edgar showed that he still has plenty left in the tank following a brutal knockout loss to Brian Ortega , as he earned a sweep of the scorecards in a rematch against Cub Swanson in the UFC Fight Night 128 co-main event. With the win, Edgar holds steady at No. 4 in our featherweight rankings. Elsewhere, David Branch solidified his spot in the middleweight poll with an emphatic first-round knockout of bubble lister Thiago Santos for his second win in his last three Octagon appearances.

According to a report by MMA Today , Hardy will face Brandon Sayles in a heavyweight matchup at Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series on June 12 in Las Vegas. The Contender Series debuted last summer with eight five-bout events. Competitors who had the most impressive performances received UFC contracts at the end of each card. Hardy, who trains at American Top Team, has earned a trio of first-round stoppages in his first three amateur appearances. Most recently, he garnered a 14-second TKO win over Ryan Chester at Legacy Fighting Alliance 33 on Feb. 16. A native of Fort Benning, Ga., Sayles owns a 5-1 career professional mark. During his tenure in the NFL, Hardy was one of the top pass rushers in football, earning second-team all pro honors in 2013 with the Carolina Panthers after finishing with 15 sacks.

Jon Jones Makes Promise to Alexander Gustafsson: ‘You Will Never Beat Me’

According to Jon Jones , Alexander Gustafsson will never do better than his near miss against the former light heavyweight champion in their classic bout at UFC 165. On that September 2013 evening, Jones struggled early, then rallied late for a thrilling five-round decision victory over “The Mauler” in what remains the most difficult test of his UFC tenure. Gustafsson recently appeared on Joe Rogan’s podcast and admitted that beating Jones would be more significant than winning the UFC light heavyweight title. “It was really tough because everybody was saying, ‘You’re winning this fight.’ It was just right there at the goal line. I didn’t really pass that goal line at all,” Gustafsson said. “It was tough. It’s a really good experience for me. The fight is a highlight in my career, in my life, for sure. “Winning over Jon Jones is bigger than taking the belt. The guy is such a beast…Look at what he did to [ Daniel Cormier ].” Jones is currently awaiting a ruling from USADA after being fined $205,000 and having his license revoked by the California State Athletic commission for a failed drug test at UFC 214 last July.

Wouldn't it be nice to not have to wonder if Matt Serra deserves to be a UFC Hall of Famer?

This, too, is a permanent part of this particular conversation. Remember earlier, how I referred to Serra’s selection for the UFC Hall of a Fame as a “decision”? That’s entirely accurate. There’s no voting process that we know of, and certainly not one that even resembles the process in other sports. Near as we can tell, it’s just the UFC president picking who he wants and ignoring who he doesn’t.

Matt Serra to be Inducted into UFC Hall of Fame Class of 2018 |

“Matt Serra is one of the most underrated mixed martial artists in UFC history,” UFC President Dana White said. “From winning the Ultimate Fighter, to becoming UFC welterweight champion with one of the biggest upsets in UFC history, and now coaching some of the sports top athletes, Matt’s lifelong dedication to combat sports is legendary. Matt fought on the second UFC event under Zuffa ownership in 2001, and today, he helps us find new and exciting talent, while also co-hosting UFC Unfiltered. Serra is a true pioneer, and we look forward to celebrating his career at the UFC Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in July.”

Kleber Koike Erbst, Marcin Wrzosek to Rematch for Vacant KSW Featherweight Title on June 9

Marcin Wrzosek and Kleber Koike Erbst will rematch for the vacant Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki featherweight crown at KSW 44 on June 9. The Polish promotion announced the pairing on Monday. KSW 44 takes place at Ergo Arena in Gdansk, Poland and also features a heavyweight showdown between Mariusz Pudzianowski and Karol Bedorf . Nonetheless, the 28-year-old still earned a third-round submission of Artur Sowinski at KSW 41 for his fifth consecutive triumph. A cast member on Season 22 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Wrzosek signed with KSW after falling to Julian Erosa at the “TUF 22” finale. He has won three of his first four appearances with the promotion, including a decision win over Roman Szymanski at KSW 41.

‘Korean Zombie’ Calls for Future Matchup with Featherweight Contender Frankie Edgar

Chan Sung Jung isn’t one for elaborate callouts, but he gets his point across nonetheless. Using the screen of a UFC video game with his desired matchup as the background, “The Korean Zombie” angled for a showdown with Frankie Edgar following the former lightweight champion’s unanimous verdict over Cub Swanson in the UFC Fight Night 128 co-main event in Atlantic City, N.J., on Saturday night. [Frankie Edgar] I want to fight with you,” Jung wrote. @frankieedgar I want to fight with you. #ufc A post shared by 정찬성 (@koreanzombiemma) on Apr 22, 2018 at 7:09am PDT The 31-year-old South Korean returned from his mandatory military service at UFC Fight Night 104, where he earned a first-round knockout of Dennis Bermudez in February 2017. Unfortunately, Jung was forced to withdraw from a scheduled UFC 214 clash with Ricardo Lamas in July after suffering a knee injury. The resulting surgery was expected to keep “The Korean Zombie” out for up to six months. Edgar has twice challenged for featherweight titles since moving down from 155 pounds.

Eddie Alvarez: I’m the Best Style Matchup to Beat Khabib Nurmagomedov

The Ultimate Fighting Championship men’s lightweight division is arguably the most competitive division in the UFC and the current crop of lightweights vying for the title is possibly the best it’s ever been. UFC matchmakers will have some tough decisions ahead when deciding who is in line for the next title shot against the newly-crowned champion in Khabib Nurmagomedov . The decision is made even more difficult with the recent performances by Dustin Poirier and Kevin Lee . At the top of the lightweight division sits the undefeated Dagestani in Nurmagomedov, who claimed the title earlier this month with a unanimous decision victory against Al Iaquinta . You could make an argument that any of the five guys under him in Tony Ferguson , Conor McGregor , Eddie Alvarez , Kevin Lee and Dustin Poirier are all capable of capturing the belt. Ferguson has already held the interim title and McGregor and Alvarez are former champions. Out of the those top-ranked fighters, former lightweight champion Alvarez believes he has the best style to match Nurmagomedov. “I know 100 percent that matchup wise -- wrestling and stylistically, I watch the champion a lot -- I am the guy to beat the champion, not Dustin Poirier, not Conor McGregor, not anyone.

UFC Fight Night 128 Prelims: Corey Anderson Grabs Much-Needed Win Against Patrick Cummins

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- He needed this, and he knew it. It had been some time since Corey Anderson had his hand raised in the Octagon. Precisely 501 days, which amounts to roughly 43,286,400 seconds, since Anderson stopped Sean O'Connell in two rounds on Dec. 9, 2016. Anderson, the UFC No. 10-ranked light heavyweight, lost twice in 2017, and feared his stock was dropping. He had the perfect foil to snap his two-fight losing skid against Patrick Cummins (10-5) -- and it’s what he did. Anderson (10-4) had his way with Cummins from the beginning, swelling his right eye in the first and pounding that weak area in the second, causing a small cut to hemorrhage blood. After repeated takedowns, Anderson coasted in the third on his way to a unanimous 30-26 (twice) and 30-27 victory on the UFC Fight Night 128 undercard from Boardwalk Hall, the first time the Ultimate Fighting Championship has been to Atlantic City’s fabled arena since UFC 53 in 2005. “That went 100 percent according to the game plan,” Anderson said of his victory over Cummins.
