UFC 197 Results: Jones Wins Title After Repeatedly Slamming And Striking OSP In Dominant Win

The question of whether or not Jones had missed a step was answered quickly when he landed the first oblique kick (of many) in the opening seconds of the fight. OSP kept a safe distance and landed some pawing strikes, but Jones dictated where the action went in the opening round landing jumping body kicks and knees to the body of OSP. The pace of the fight remained slow throughout the entire first five minutes, but it was clear that Jones was controlling the action. That’s not to say that OSP did not land his fair share of shots, though. There were moments where OSP caught Jones off guard with a shot that brought the crowd to their feet, but neither man followed up or retaliated.

Hiromasa Ogikubo, Koshi Matsumoto Take Shooto World Titles at Finish-Filled ‘Fight & Mosh’

Professional Shooto has two new world champions. Saturday, leading Shooto promoter Sustain and Japanese streetwear company Mobstyles collaborated for another card in their “Fight and Mosh” series inside the Maihama Amphitheater in Urayasu, Japan, with a championship doubleheader. In the headliner, former 135-pound champion Hiromasa Ogikubo earned his second Shooto world title, snatching Masaaki Sugawara 's 125-pound crown with a guillotine choke in the fifth and final frame. Ogikubo (15-3-2) was in control of the title fight from the outset, putting the incumbent titlist on the mat repeatedly with his powerful, driving takedowns. Sugawara (18-11-1) was able to sweep and escape on occasion, but by the championship rounds, the 36-year-old was worn down by Ogikubo's relentless pressure on top. An arm-triangle choke late in round four was a clear indication of Ogikubo's increasing dominance in the bout, setting the stage for the Paraestra Matsudo product to seal the deal in the last round. With a swollen and cut right eye, Sugawara tried to get his volume punching attack going, only to end up beneath Ogikubo, desperately trying to scramble to his feet.

Bellator 153 results: Andrey Koreshkov dominates Benson Henderson to retain title

Page (10-0 MMA, 5-0 BMMA) dropped Holloway (7-2 MMA, 0-2 BMMA) with a right hand seconds after the bout began. Holloway was able to bounce back to his feet, however, and pinned Page’s back against the cage, looking to put the fight on the floor. Holloway threw a knee in the clinch that landed low and the referee restarted the men at distance, allowing Page to land another thudding right hand. Holloway was badly hurt by the punch and desperately tried for a takedown. As Page fired away with hammerfists, Holloway attempted to lock up a leg. Shockingly, it was Page that finished the fight with a submission, locking up Holloway’s leg and torquing to force the tap at the 2:15 mark of Round 1.

Jon Jones Takes Interim Championship, Decisions Ovince St. Preux in UFC 197 Headliner

Jon Jones at less than his best was more than enough to get past Ovince St. Preux . In his first appearance inside the Octagon in more than a year, Jones claimed the interim Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight title and cruised to a unanimous decision over St. Preux in the UFC 197 headliner on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Scores were 50-44, 50-45 and 50-45, all in Jones’ favor. St. Preux (19-8, 7-3 UFC), who replaced reigning light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier on short notice, was stuck in neutral for the majority of the 25-minute encounter. Jones chipped away at the underdog with a variety of kicks to the legs, body and head. He appeared passive at times but found another gear in the championship round. Jones (22-1, 16-1 UFC) struck for a pair of takedowns in the fourth round, battered the fading St. Preux with some of his trademark elbows and briefly advanced to mount. He scored with another powerful takedown in the fifth before easing his foot off the gas and coasting to the finish line.

Matches to Make After Bellator 153

The friends, family and fans of Benson Henderson would have been better off looking the other way. Henderson found himself woefully outgunned in his bid to unseat Bellator MMA welterweight champion Andrey Koreshkov in the Bellator 153 main event, as he bowed to the Russian in a one-sided unanimous decision on Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. All three cageside judges saw it 50-45 for Koreshkov, giving him a clean sweep on the scorecards. No one previously had bullied Henderson for such an extended period of time. Koreshkov squashed the MMA Lab rep’s takedowns and systematically dismantled him from the outside, utilizing his superior height and reach. He had Henderson teetering on the brink more than once, nearly finishing him with a flying knee on the button late in the first round. Only Henderson’s guile and heart kept him around for the full 25 minutes. In wake of Bellator 153, here are five matchups that ought to be considered: Andrey Koreshkov vs. Douglas Lima: With Ben Askren having flown the coop for One Championship long ago, Koreshkov looks like a man among boys in Bellator’s welterweight division.

UFC 197 Results: Pettis Loses Striking Battle Against Barboza

Pettis began to open up despite not finding his distance which simply expended his energy more than anything. Barboza waited for his opportunity to land the big strike and landed left hooks and leg kicks in the mean time. Pettis showed more aggression in the latter half of the second, firing off body kicks and lunging in with wild strikes that would find success at times. Neither man landed anything dangerous again in the second round, but Pettis tried to land big on a tumbling heel kick to close out the round before the horn sounded.

Boxing: Gennady Golovkin Still Has Some Proving to Do

The steam machine is back again this week -- in the process of turning out stories, podcasts, video streams, tweets, Instagrams and various other social media gadgets or apps that are out there espousing the greatness of Gennady “GGG” Golovkin . It makes some sense, since “GGG” will be putting his 21-fight knockout streak on the line against undefeated Dominic Wade (18-0, 12 KOs) on HBO this Saturday at The Forum in Inglewood, California. There is no questioning that Golovkin (34-0, 31 knockouts) is one of the best fighters in the world. There is no question that the current proprietor of the IBF and WBA middleweight title belts is boxing’s most devastating puncher. What continues to be missing, however, is the true measure how good Golovkin is, and that is not all Golovkin’s fault. Hopefully something will be done about it by the end of this year. Golovkin is 34. The last time he went the distance was a unanimous eight-round decision over Amar Amari on June 21, 2008 in Denmark.
