By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night 128

Faced with a common opponent, Kevin Lee did his best to outdo Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC Fight Night 128 . While he faced a harrowing moment courtesy of a spinning heel kick in the third round, Lee might have done exactly that, as he finished Edson Barboza via doctor’s stoppage 2:18 into the fifth round of their headlining bout at the Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J., on Saturday night. While a title shot might not be forthcoming for “The Motown Phenom,” he bounced back nicely from a loss to Tony Ferguson in an interim title bout this past October. At the very least, he probably made Nurmagomedov take notice. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 128, with statistics courtesy of Related » UFC Atlantic City Round-by-Round Scoring 142: Significant strikes landed by Lee against Barboza. That included advantages of 40 to 4 in round one, 34 to 7 in round two and 38 to 5 in round four. By comparison, the Brazilian landed 51 significant strikes. 233: Total strikes landed by Lee. Barboza, meanwhile, landed just 64.

UFC Veteran Gerald Harris Replaces John Salter, Meets Rafael Lovato Jr. at Bellator 198

Rafael Lovato Jr. has a new opponent for his featured bout at Bellator 198. John Salter has withdrawn from the matchup and will be replaced by four-time UFC veteran Gerald Harris in a 188-pound catchweight bout. confirmed the change with a promotion official on Tuesday after Lovato Jr. announced the news via social media. Bellator 198 takes place at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Ill., on Saturday and is headlined by a heavyweight grand prix showdown pitting Frank Mir against Fedor Emelianenko . Harris who competed in the UFC for a four-bout stint in 2010 and owns a victory over Salter, has won nine of his last 10 fights. During that time, he has notably competed in organizations such as World Series of Fighting and Legacy Fighting Championship. Most recently, he earned a fourth-round TKO win over Matt McKeon at an Xtreme Fighting League event in Oklahoma on Oct. 21. The 38-year-old owns a 25-5 career record. An accomplished Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner, Lovato has kicked off his MMA career with seven consecutive victories.

Jon Jones Chimes In on Daniel Cormier’s Twitter Battle with Alexander Gustafsson

Alex, what exactly have you accomplished in your career? I’ve earned the right to retire on top. Your greatest accomplishment is two close losses. Congrats on the new contract, now go fight. It’s been two years. Enough with the social media. #gofight

Bellator 198 breakdown: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Frank Mir a matter of who's evolved more

Whereas Mir, who – despite scoring some Hail Mary’s of his own – has traditionally relied on technique and applications to take out his targets. This martial artist-like approach has allowed Mir to evolve late into his career, making him a more well balanced threat from knockouts to submissions. And despite Mir’s two-year layoff arising some reasonable questions about ring rust, I am willing to wager that the time off for an already established heavyweight with mileage may not necessarily be the worst thing in the world.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Motown on the Rise

Kevin Lee sent a message to the rest of the lightweight division in the UFC Fight Night 128 headliner. “The Motown Phenom” overwhelmed Edson Barboza with takedowns and vicious ground-and-pound, survived one harrowing spinning back kick and ultimately earned a fifth-round stoppage of his Brazilian opponent. Perhaps the only blemish on Lee’s performance was his inability to make weight one day prior. Still, thanks to the finish, something Khabib Nurmagomedov couldn’t do against Barboza in a three-round affair, Lee vaults to No. 5 in our lightweight rankings. Meanwhile, Frankie Edgar showed that he still has plenty left in the tank following a brutal knockout loss to Brian Ortega , as he earned a sweep of the scorecards in a rematch against Cub Swanson in the UFC Fight Night 128 co-main event. With the win, Edgar holds steady at No. 4 in our featherweight rankings. Elsewhere, David Branch solidified his spot in the middleweight poll with an emphatic first-round knockout of bubble lister Thiago Santos for his second win in his last three Octagon appearances.

Project Spearhead Founder Leslie Smith Planning Legal Action Against UFC for Contract Buyout

Leslie Smith is planning to take legal action against the UFC after she believes the promotion bought out her contract in retaliation for her leading an effort to unionize fighters. Smith, a seven-time Octagon veteran, was scheduled to face Aspen Ladd at UFC Fight Night 128 in Atlantic City, N.J., this past weekend. The contest was canceled when Ladd missed weight for the 135-pound contest by 1.8 pounds. As a result, the UFC paid Smith $62,000 for the final fight on her contract and informed her that they would not be giving her a new deal. Smith claims that decision is directly related to her role as founder of Project Spearhead , an organization with the goal of unionizing fighters under the UFC banner. In order to help with her legal fees, Smith has started a GoFundMe page . “I attempted to extend my contract with the UFC after my opponent missed weight. However, the UFC, in perceived retaliation against my legally protected right to unionize, declined to extend my contract,” Smith wrote. “In addition, the UFC advised me it would pay me, in an unprecedented fashion, my show and win money without fighting so that the remaining fight on my contract would be considered fulfilled.

‘King Without a Crown’ Emmanuel Sanchez Eager to Defeat Another UFC Vet at Bellator 198

Shortly after Emmanuel Sanchez dispatched former featherweight champion Daniel Straus with a triangle choke last October, he had an eye-opening conversation with a key Bellator official. “Even the matchmaker Rich Chou said, ‘I’ve never seen Straus get dominated like that before.’That’s someone who’s gone to wars with [ Patricio Freire , with [Pat] Curran. He hasn’t lost to anyone else but us three now in Bellator,” Sanchez told “It’s really great that I got to go out and showcase that I am capable of this. More of that is coming.” It was an impressive addition to a resume that continues to grow by the year. Sanchez has been victorious in eight of 10 Bellator appearances, with his only defeats coming to former champion Pat Curran and current No. 1 contender Daniel Weichel . But the Straus victory was especially significant, not only because of his opponent’s status, but because it was Sanchez’s first finish within the California-based promotion. “That’s really been a long time coming,” Sanchez said. “I think a lot of people [are like], decisions, decisions and that’s all I can do.

UFC Fight Night 128 Post-Mortem: Atlantic City Mauling

UFC Fight Night 128 marked a contest between two lightweight contenders looking to bounce back: Edson Barboza attempting to erase the memory of dropping a lopsided unanimous decision to Khabib Nurmagomedov in December and Kevin Lee searching to validate the hype following a submission loss to Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight title in October. Finally, when the two were locked in the cage in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Lee answered all the questions critics had concerning his status as a contender and cemented himself as a top lightweight who may be destined for stardom. The gameplan was simple for Lee; get within range and land takedowns early and often and look to beat Barboza up on the mat, where he and his team believed he was vastly superior to his Brazilian foe. Lee was successful getting takedowns throughout the contest and within 40 seconds into the opening frame, he had Barboza on his back where he systematically broke the kickboxer down. The lone shining moment for Barboza came early in the third round, where he landed his signature spinning heel kick, bouncing it off of Lee’s noggin, turning his legs to rubber.

Nonetheless, the 28-year-old still earned a third-round submission of Artur Sowinski at KSW 41 for his fifth consecutive triumph. A cast member on Season 22 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Wrzosek signed with KSW after falling to Julian Erosa at the “TUF 22” finale. ‘Jacare’ Souza Confident He’ll Be UFC Middleweight Champion Within Two Fights

Former Dream and Strikeforce middleweight champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza is confident that 2018 will be a good year for him inside the Octagon. The Brazilian is scheduled to face Kelvin Gastelum in the co-main event of UFC 224 in Rio de Janeiro on May 12. The 38-year-old has come close in the past in earning a shot at the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight belt and is confident that a win against Gasteulm will put him in pole position to face the winner of Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero , who will fight for the title at UFC 225 in June. “If you analyze it, there’s no better option,” Souza told MMA Fighting . “ Chris Weidman can’t fight now, he’s hurt. Kelvin Gastelum is here to fight, I’m here to fight, you know? Here’s what’s going to happen: in two fights I’ll become the UFC middleweight champion. “No disrespect, it’s just me being confident. In two fights, I’ll become the UFC middleweight champion. I’m working for that, and I believe in it, and it will happen. Kelvin is a tough fight, difficult, complicated, but I’m here to defeat anyone and I will win two fights to become UFC champion.

Why Derrick Lewis won't let go of 'little grudge' with Francis Ngannou, even after UFC 226

“I’m just going in there like he’s anybody else,” Lewis said. “When the fight is over with, I’m not going to be shaking his hand and all that. To me, whenever a fighter tries to talk sh*t to me before a fight then shakes your hand afterward – nah. I’m not going to do all that. I’m still going to have that little grudge toward him. I’m not trying to be his friend after. I’m happy to get it over with. The fans, they wanted this fight for a long time. Might as well give them what they ask for.”

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Barboza vs. Lee’

This was the kind of star-making performance that Kevin Lee has long sought. “The Motown Phenom” mauled former Ring of Combat titleholder Edson Barboza across 20-plus minutes, kept his name on a short list of top-shelf Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweights and forced a fifth-round stoppage in the UFC Fight Night 128 main event on Saturday at Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Having suffered a horrendous cut above his right eye, Barboza bowed out 2:18 into Round 5. Outside of a spinning heel kick that set Lee on skates in the third round, Barboza offered little in the way of meaningful offense. According to FightMetric figures, Lee outlanded the Brazilian by wide margins in terms of total strikes, 233-64, and significant strikes, 142-51. He secured four takedowns, executed 11 guard passes and battered Barboza with a sustained barrage of ground-and-pound that led to the finish. Lee was particularly dominant in the first, second and fourth rounds. In the aftermath of UFC Fight Night “Barboza vs.

Mike Perry violates social contract, mocks Kelvin Gastelum for Facebook friend request

But come on, Mike. We know this is the brutal world of professional cage fighting and all, but what if you accidentally made a friend? Is that the worst thing that could happen? Eddie Alvarez: I’m the Best Style Matchup to Beat Khabib Nurmagomedov

The Ultimate Fighting Championship men’s lightweight division is arguably the most competitive division in the UFC and the current crop of lightweights vying for the title is possibly the best it’s ever been. UFC matchmakers will have some tough decisions ahead when deciding who is in line for the next title shot against the newly-crowned champion in Khabib Nurmagomedov . The decision is made even more difficult with the recent performances by Dustin Poirier and Kevin Lee . At the top of the lightweight division sits the undefeated Dagestani in Nurmagomedov, who claimed the title earlier this month with a unanimous decision victory against Al Iaquinta . You could make an argument that any of the five guys under him in Tony Ferguson , Conor McGregor , Eddie Alvarez , Kevin Lee and Dustin Poirier are all capable of capturing the belt. Ferguson has already held the interim title and McGregor and Alvarez are former champions. Out of the those top-ranked fighters, former lightweight champion Alvarez believes he has the best style to match Nurmagomedov. “I know 100 percent that matchup wise -- wrestling and stylistically, I watch the champion a lot -- I am the guy to beat the champion, not Dustin Poirier, not Conor McGregor, not anyone.

PFL's $1 million tourneys may not lure Bellator's Michael Chandler, but Rizin FF could

Still, though, Chandler remains committed to Bellator, though that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s unable to fight elsewhere. Sure, the UFC could always be an option, as well. But take, for instance, the Japanese-based Rizin FF promotion, which has ties to Bellator and company president Scott Coker.

Merab Dvalishvili 'still in shock' from questionable UFC Atlantic City loss to Ricky Simon

“I’m still in shock,” Dvalishvili said. “I’m shocked. I don’t know what happened. I win fight; everyone thinks I won fight. Everyone. I controlled fight and one minute left I tried to take him down, stay on top, finish on top. But when I take him down, I hit my head on the floor. I feel something is not right. I focused only on the time. I tried to stay in. I moved my legs. I was fighting the hands also, my eyes open. I never stopped. I kept fighting, kept showing everyone that I’m not sleeping from 55 seconds until finish.”
