UFC 172: Danny Castillo discusses bond with Duane Ludwig and plans for future

I'm close to him. He's not just a coach, he's a friend, a part of the family. Our team in general is like a big family. We're not just losing a coach, we're losing a member of the family. Believe it or not, the closest one to Bang isn't me, it's TJ. He's the one it's probably going to affect the most. I'm happy for him and his family. His wife and kids are great, so I'm happy for them to get to live out their dreams near loved ones and family.

Vitor Belfort wants to replace Lyoto Machida in UFC 175 main event

"I’m not worried about who wins that fight, actually," Belfort said of Weidman-Machida. "I’m focused on what I have to do every day. I just trained today, now I’m here (at Arnold Classic Brazil), and I’m going to train again tomorrow morning. That’s what I do."

Andrei Arlovski-Brendan Schaub Slated for UFC 174 in Vancouver

Brendan Schaub will welcome Andrei Arlovski back to the Octagon in June. | Dave Mandel/ Andrei Arlovski now has an opponent for his Octagon return. Ultimate Fighting Championship officials announced Friday that the former heavyweight champion will collide with Brendan Schaub when the Las Vegas-based promotion returns to Vancouver, British Columbia for UFC 174 . The event takes place June 14 and airs live on pay-per-view, headlined by a flyweight title matchup pitting reigning champion Demetrious Johnson against hard-hitting Dagestani challenger Ali Bagautinov . A 32-fight pro, Arlovski has gone 6-1 with one no-contest in his last eight fights. “The Pit Bull” posted a 2-1 during his time with the World Series of Fighting and last competed on Nov. 29, when he dispatched Andreas Kraniotakes with second-round strikes in his home country of Belarus. Four years younger than his veteran opponent, Schaub, 31, halted a two-fight skid with back-to-back victories in his last two appearances, outpointing Lavar Johnson before submitting former “Ultimate Fighter 10” cast mate Matt Mitrione with a brabo choke last September at UFC 165.

UFC 172: Luke Rockhold doesn't want a fast track to a title shot

Here's the thing, I'm not looking for the fast track. I don't want to be gifted with anything, and I want to earn my spot. I'm not one of those guys who's going to be calling for a title shot when I haven't earned it. I want to be the best guy in the division. If I'm going to be the champion one day, I want to beat Vitor Belfort first. I'm not going to be the best guy in the world until I beat him. I've got to redeem myself to get my clean slate. I believe I can and I will do that one day soon, I hope. Right now, I have Tim Boetsch in front of me, and that's what I'm focused on right now.

How to Drink All Night But Never Get Drunk

Of course, I had to honor my longtime hero Koch, and a new beer hero I’d just learned about in Owades, and try this trick myself. So the next day I grabbed a six-pack of beer and a packet of Fleischmann’s and went to work. The older I get, the more of a lightweight I surely become, but after shoveling down six teaspoons and tilting back six bottles I felt nothing more than a little buzzed. Koch told me he keeps a breathalyzer around at all times just to assure he’s never too drunk. He never is. And, though I had no tangible “proof,” besides the fact I was still awake, I was pretty sure I wasn’t all that drunk either. Forever more I’d be yet another guy discreetly carrying a white powder around at bars. I’d advise you do likewise.

Cowherd: NCAA Pay for 'Weed, Kicks'

I don't think paying all college athletes is great, not every college is loaded and most 19-year-olds (are) gonna spend it—and let's be honest, they're gonna spend it on weed and kicks! And spare me the "they're being extorted" thing. Listen, 90 percent of these college guys are gonna spend it on tats, weed, kicks, Xboxes, beer and swag. They are, get over it! They're not gonna budget it efficiently, they're not going to invest it, they're not gonna shop for the best interest rate for their moped. No they're not, they're 19, they just got a fresh Honda, there's a cute girl in chemistry class, they're gonna get some new kicks. That's what they're going to spend it on.

Sentenced to life in prison, man hopes new clemency rules will get him out

Timothy Tyler says his life ended when he was 23-years-old. That was two decades ago, when he was arrested and later sentenced to a mandatory double-life term in prison without the possibility of parole for conspiracy to possess LSD with intent to distribute. A self-described "Deadhead," Tyler was busted after mailing five grams of the hallucinogenic drug to a friend who was working as an informant for the federal government.

Marvel is killing off a major character — EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK! |

Michael Marts, an executive editor at Marvel overseeing the project, explains that the idea to kill off one of the most iconic characters in comic books emerged out of Marvel’s semi-annual creative retreat, when Marvel writers and editors come together to discuss major projects. “For a long time, no matter who Wolverine was battling, he’s been the eternal victor,” says Marts. “He almost always comes out on top. Now he finally comes up against an adversary that he cannot win against, he cannot fight. What does that mean for this character who’s been around for hundred years?”

UFC 172: Jones vs. Teixeira staff picks and predictions

Dallas Winston : Here's my thing with Jonesy: he's so unusually creative and unorthodox on the feet that, pre-Gustafsson, I wondered aloud about what role he'd fall back on if he ever got in trouble. In other words, he's so unpredictable and dynamic that it leaves a question mark on what his "bread and butter" is on the feet. And when he was tested by Gus ... he mounted his comeback and eventually took over using a lead step-in elbow and a left high kick? Regardless, I've been most impressed with Glover's ability to wrestle, which is an impressive and under-appreciated piece in his finish-potent puzzle. However, Glover does not transition smoothly from striking to wrestling nor when attacking an opponent who doesn't retreat straight backward. You can never close the door on a multifarious and offensively explosive juggernaut like Glover, but Jones foot-speed, in addition to the range problems he presents, seals it for me. Jon Jones by decision.

UFC 172 play-by-play and live results

Round 3 – Scores could be anywhere. Gomi calls to the crowd for some cheers to start the final round, and they respond. Vallie-Flagg still the aggressor, moving forward and looking to strike. Meanwhile, Gomi is content to bring him in and score with big counters. Vallie-Flagg’s right eye is completely shut. Still, he moves forward. He pushes Gomi to the floor and starts to strike, but Gomi won’t stay put and gets back to his feet. Crowd starts chanting Gomi’s name. Vallie-Flagg gets to the outside and drives in a few knees. Vallie-Flagg with a nice short elbows, and Gomi finally pulls away. Two minutes into the final round. Cntinued work from both. Cobinations from both fighters. Vallie-Flagg’s face is an absolute mess. Blood flowing down. They move into the clinch, and the blood is running down the bodies of both fighters. Gomi slips to the back. Vallie-Flagg turns in and reverses and scores with a takedown. He wants the neck but slips off the back. Gomi finishes on top. Great fight. MMAjunkie sees the final round for Gomi, 10-9, awarding him the fight 30-27.

UFC 172 fight card primer: Jon Jones vs Glover Teixeira

One year ago, Jon Jones was one of the top 3 fighters in the sport. Now, he stands alone as the King of the Mountain, and the clear cut P4P #1 right now. He's defended the UFC Light Heavyweight title an impressive and record breaking 6 times, and he's essentially undefeated in his 20 fight career. His combination of wrestling, striking, and submission acumen is deadly. In short, he's a beast. But he's also coming off literally the only fight of his career where he seemed to have met someone even remotely close to his equal. Is Gustafsson just that good, or is the unbeatable shine off of Jones? We may find out tonight.

Phil Davis trying to fight (and talk) his way into next UFC title shot

Davis, who has won his last three bouts, heeded the UFC executive’s words. He turned a usually uneventful media conference call Monday into a verbal sparring session with Jones, slamming his previous performance against Alexander Gustafsson and promising to “clean up whatever is left” of the fighter after his meeting with Teixeira. While a few of the fighters on the call chuckled, Davis went on a verbal tear and promised to break Jones “like a sugar cookie.” He added that White also will be hearing a lot more from him.

UFC 172: Jones vs. Teixeira live results and play-by-play for the PPV main card

Round 5 - Jones with a quick takedown but Glover got up just as quickly. The champ pushed Teixeira against the cage and just worked wrist control for a little while. Nice uppercut from Teixeira and a left hook. More phone booth warring, and Jones knocked his mouthpiece out again. Right hook from Teixeira after the mouthpiece was replaced. And another. Jones backed him up and unleashed the elbows again. Another uppercut from Glover. Side elbow from Jones, Anderson-style. Glover was finally showing signs of fatigue. Jones pushed Glover back and ate an uppercut. Jones with his hands down and just feinting now. They're back up after Glover landed a punch. Then Jones started to run a bit, which was weird. Jones missed with a spinning wheel kick and had his arms in the air before the final horn. 10-9 and 50-45 Jones.

UFC Champ Jon Jones Growing into His Role as Entertainer |

Like most elite athletes, Jon Jones arrived on the scene with little to no training in how to handle the pressures of stardom. He was fine handling himself inside the Octagon, but outside of it has been an entirely different growing process for one of the world’s pound-for-pound greatest mixed martial artists.

Jack Slack: Glover Teixeira in One Punch | FIGHTLAND

Glover Teixeira is one of those fighters who puts an analyst or pundit in a very awkward position. On the one hand, he's looked nothing short of brilliant in most of his fights, and the stories one hears about him from fellow fighters who have trained with him are impressive. On the other hand, he hasn't really beaten any truly elite light heavyweights, spare a knockout over the chinny Ryan Bader, a performance in which Teixeira looked anything but untouchable.

Say it ain’t so, MMA fans. Don Frye , legendary bad-ass whose blood runs red, white, and blue with freedom, shaved his mustache. What crude and demonic device was capable of trimming concentrated manhood, we’ll never know. Seriously, his mustache was like bald eagles, American flags, fireworks, and guns condensed into facial hair. It was perfect! A more puzzling question is why Frye would be compelled to do something like this. At the time of writing, his twitter–which still presents an avatar bearing his wondrous stache–offers no explanation.

UFC 172 undercard live blog: Benavidez vs. Elliott, more

Takanori Gomi def. Isaac Vallie-Flagg via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) Joseph Benavidez vs. Tim Elliott Round 1: Mario Yamasaki is the referee in charge of the action. Elliott gets a single and runs the pipe, but Benavidez scores with a butterfly hook and underhook to stand. Elliott lands a hip toss and is into a crucifix position. He can't keep it and is passing Benavidez's guard. Benvidez kicks him off and they stand. Good left hook for Benavidez, plus a knee to the body. Driving double leg from Elliott works, but as he tries to pass, Benvidez goes base down and reverses position. Benavidez trying to set up a mounted guillotine, but isn't really there with it. And then all of a sudden he does get it. Elliott's arms are trapped and he's forced to tap with his feet.

Danny Castillo is Ready to Make a Push in the Lightweight Division Starting at UFC 172 |

“I expect to win. I expect to be the best Danny Castillo I have been,” he said. “I’m just looking to win. I want to be on the winning track. I’m looking to make a push. Everything right now is good. My jiu-jitsu is good. My striking is good. Physically I’m in the best shape of my life. And Mentally, I’m so focused. I’m ready.”

From blue-collar beginning to deportation, Glover Teixeira never lost focus on UFC gold

Teixeira, who has won 20 straight and has not lost since 2005, will fight for his dream Saturday night. Oddsmakers have him pegged as high as a 5-to-1 underdog. Jones, after all, is probably the best fighter on the planet and the greatest light heavyweight ever. But those who have been around him know Teixeira is more than capable. Liddell said Friday at the UFC Fight Club Q&A that Teixeira would finish Jones in the third round. Liddell expects Teixeira to land one of those big punches of his and put Jones to sleep.

Melvin Manhoef isn't 100 percent focused on ‘Cyborg' rematch

"I don’t know what he’s gonna do, but if he wanna make a nice fight that people can enjoy it we will go and do the stand up," he said. "But if he wanna go to the ground I’m no black belt (in jiu-jitsu), but the ground game is not only choking people. It’s MMA, so we will see."

UFC 172 fight card primer: Phil Davis vs. Anthony Johnson

Johnson was cut from the UFC in 2011 following a failed attempt at making middleweight against Vitor Belfort, missing by a dozen pounds. He lost to Belfort in the process via rear-naked choke, but has been a force since then. He's established himself as a regular light heavyweight (aside from a one-off heavyweight win against Andrei Arlovski), and re-joins the UFC on a six-fight winning streak. Rumble recorded two KOs in World Series of Fighting as well as a TKO of former UFC middleweight Jake Rosholt. Johnson has the decided edge in the striking, particularly in speed and power, but it could be all for naught if he can't stop the takedown.

Head injury sidelines champ Dantas, Warren vs. Silva for interim belt at Bellator 118

Warren, Bellator’s former featherweight champion, has won three straight fights since losing the 145-pound belt to Pat Curran more than two years ago. He got back on track with a decision win over Owen Evinger at Bellator 80, submitted Nick Kirk at Bellator 101 this past September in a tourney semifinal bout, and in November, he stopped Travis Marx with a second-round TKO to win the Season 9 bantamweight tourney to get his title shot.

Sports vs. Politics: Why the Jon Jones-Muhammad Ali comparison is inherently flawed

The point of this editorial is not to reproduce a historical analysis of Ali's life, but to illustrate a significant distinction between two combatants based on their varying periods in history and the cultural and social dimensions that separate them.  Currently, you would be hard-pressed to find a legitimate comparison of the two that went above paralleling their enormous talent, but this juxtaposition becomes useless when examining why each of them were "hated" at different periods of their careers.

UFC 172: 17 Top MMA fighters predict Jon Jones vs. Glover Teixeira

Josh Samman : When we look back on the Jon Jones reign of the Light Heavyweight division years later, I think we will see Glover Teixeira as one of his easier matchups. "Easy" is never a word I'm comfortable with in a cage fight, especially a world title fight, but I think stylistically this is going to be bad for Glover. Teixeira has shown to be far too hittable in his recent fights, and Jon is too damn good at striking to not capitalize on that. Jones will hurt him and finish it with strikes or one of his long-man submissions, and hopefully move on to fight the one challenger I believe has a chance in the division, Daniel Cormier .
