MMA’s Greats of the States | Texas: Evan Tanner

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it.

The Bottom Line: Cold Realities

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * The latest season of “The Ultimate Fighter” kicked off on April 19 with all the hallmarks of the more successful early editions of the show. The fighters featured more big personalities than usual, and the general theme of personal redemption made the stakes feel higher. Most importantly, the dynamic between the coaches was strong, with two upper-echelon competitors making no secret of their mutual disdain. “The Ultimate Fighter” at its advanced age possesses only a fraction of the power it once did to create stars and build pay-per-views, but the Cody Garbrandt - T.J. Dillashaw rivalry is exactly what you’d hope for to advance those goals. Garbrandt-Dillashaw in general has all the elements that are usually present for a big UFC fight. Both fighters are at the top of their game, with Garbrandt undefeated professionally and Dillashaw’s only defeats since 2011 coming via controversial split decisions.

New York State of Mind

Featherweight prospect James Gallagher had his heart set on participating in Bellator MMA ’s return to London in May. However, as soon as the promotion announced plans for Bellator 180 on June 24 at Madison Square Garden in New York, the unbeaten Irishman declared his interest in competing at the historic venue. “I’ll still take whatever Bellator wants to give me, but it’s always been a dream of mine to fight at Madison Square Garden,” Gallagher told “I want to follow the path that has been put in place by the greats. All of the greatest fighters have all fought at MSG. We saw Conor [McGregor] there in November and the reception that he got. Michael Conlan just made his pro boxing debut at MSG, and he sold the place out. “When you think of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and legends like that, they’ve all competed there,” he added. “No one from my town, Strabane, has ever competed on a stage like that. It would make me very proud to represent my community and Ireland if I ever got the opportunity to fight there.” Bellator has made Gallagher’s dreams a reality, as he will meet Chinzo Machida on the Bellator 180 undercard.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Heavyweight

Heavyweight 1. Stipe Miocic (16-2) The UFC’s reigning and defending heavyweight champion has been outspoken recently about his desire for a newer, fatter contract, feeling as though he let himself down by being a “company man” and signing his previous deal without negotiating. However, Miocic will next get the chance to avenge his only loss in the last four years, as he faces former champion Junior dos Santos at UFC 211 on May 13 in Dallas. 2. Fabricio Werdum (21-6-1) If Werdum had his druthers and could choose a loss to avenge, it stands to reason that the former UFC heavyweight champion would want to rematch the man who took his title and humiliated him in front of 45,000 Brazilian fans: Stipe Miocic. However, if “Vai Cavalo” is to get a second crack at Miocic or the heavyweight champion's next challenger -- Junior dos Santos, who shockingly knocked out Werdum in his October 2008 UFC debut -- he will likely have to settle another score first: Werdum is expected to face rival Alistair Overeem in a rubber match at UFC 213 on July 8.

Dana White Claims UFC Shot Down $5 Billion Offer |

Turning a $2 million investment into a $4.2 billion sale certainly allowed the Fertittas to be a little choosey about whom would get the promotion. They surely wanted to make a hefty profit, and they did, but they, along with White, poured a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into building not just a company but a sport over the 15 years between the purchase and the sale.

Late Sub Ugas Stops Lara in Second on PBC on FS1 Main Event

When Mario Barrios was removed from the latest edition of PBC on FS1’s “Toe-To-Toe Tuesdays” card, foe Nelson Lara probably should have pulled out as well. But Lara opted to go ahead and fight late replacement opponent Yordenis Ugas and it cost him in the welterweight showdown. Ugas (19-3, 9 KOs) stormed out of his corner in the main event Tuesday night and unloaded a furious barrage of punches to Lara’s body, with left hooks upstairs mixed in. Though he clipped Ugas with a looping overhand right, Lara was defensive throughout the opening round as he dealt with salvo after salvo and he never was about to get his offense going. After Lara (17-8-4, 9 KOs) was lacerated around his left eye from a right uppercut through the guard early in the second, he was sent to the canvas from a follow-up flurry. He struggled to his feet and wanted to continue, but referee Bill Clancy opted to call the fight due to the severity of the cut, officially ending the bout just 53 ticks into the second. In the co-main event inside the Fitz Tunica Casino and Hotel in Tunica, Miss., super welterweight contender Levan Ghvamichava dominated Oscar Molina for 10 rounds, winning a lopsided unanimous decision for his effort.

Diego Sanchez responds to calls for his retirement following knockout loss | FOX Sports

This is a heart felt message for all the supporters of what I do but more importantly what I stand for as a athlete a man and warrior of the octagon, after evaluating the situation with a clear mind I have two options? The first is to feel sorry for myself start doubting myself, god and everything that makes me a winner? Thinking negative like many people would and even are the people that are not in my shoes the people who have no clue and just are so fast to throw out retirement and this and that? YOUR NOT ME! So just shut your mouths right now before even saying it, ITS NOT YOURS TO SAY! I speak from the heart and do not sugar coat SHIT! so there's that path the quitters path? Or there is the DIEGO path what being a Lionheart is all about it's about picking your self up when you fall learning how you fell and how to prevent it from happening again? This was the first KO of my career some fighters experience it more than ounce in over a decade of fighting the very best UFC has put in front of a man. Loosing is a part of this sport, I choose to believe in my god given abilities and had work earned talent! I choose to believe in my dream! I am confident, I am experienced, i am still very healthy, young for my physical age and more driven and hungry for success than ever.
