New York State of Mind

Featherweight prospect James Gallagher had his heart set on participating in Bellator MMA ’s return to London in May. However, as soon as the promotion announced plans for Bellator 180 on June 24 at Madison Square Garden in New York, the unbeaten Irishman declared his interest in competing at the historic venue. “I’ll still take whatever Bellator wants to give me, but it’s always been a dream of mine to fight at Madison Square Garden,” Gallagher told Sherdog.com. “I want to follow the path that has been put in place by the greats. All of the greatest fighters have all fought at MSG. We saw Conor [McGregor] there in November and the reception that he got. Michael Conlan just made his pro boxing debut at MSG, and he sold the place out. “When you think of Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier and legends like that, they’ve all competed there,” he added. “No one from my town, Strabane, has ever competed on a stage like that. It would make me very proud to represent my community and Ireland if I ever got the opportunity to fight there.” Bellator has made Gallagher’s dreams a reality, as he will meet Chinzo Machida on the Bellator 180 undercard.

Boxing’s Greats of the States | Texas: George Foreman

Boxers come from every corner of the globe. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring styles prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series, the spotlight will shine on the best boxer of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. *** “The Lone Star State” has for years been an assembly line for elite boxers, but George Foreman remains a giant among men within the Sweet Science. Foreman made a name for himself after winning an Olympic gold medal as a heavyweight at the 1968 Summer Games in Mexico City. The Marshall, Texas, native won his first 40 fights as a professional and quickly earned a reputation as one of the most frightening power punchers in the history of the sport. Foreman was a knockout machine, stopping George Chuvalo, Chuck Wepnar and Gregorio Peralta (twice) before he destroyed future hall of famers Joe Frazier and Ken Norton , winning and retaining the lineal heavyweight championship in the process.

‘TUF 25’ Recap: Episode 2

Episode 2 begins with coaches Cody Garbrandt and T.J. Dillashaw in each other’s faces during last week’s fight announcement for Eddie Gordon and Tom Gallicchio . The hostility continues into the hallway when Garbrandt’s real-life head coach Urijah Faber joins in with “No Love” in Team Dillashaw’s warm-up room. Faber and Garbrandt accuse Dillashaw of being a traitor for leaving for Duane Ludwig ’s gym in Colorado and they nearly come to blows. Dillashaw gives his side of the story and Faber calls him a liar. Needless to say, these guys won’t be exchanging Christmas gifts anytime soon. After the opening scene concludes, it’s time for Gordon and his redemption story. “Truck” won Season 19 of “TUF” and highlights of his triumph over Dhiego Lima are prominently shown. However, things turned sour for Gordon as soon as his Ultimate Fighting Championship career began as his first post-TUF 19 fight against the late Josh Samman was a disaster; he was head-kicked into oblivion. Two more losses followed and Gordon was out of the UFC, so here he is, back in the house, looking to redeem himself.

Cub Swanson Says He Broke Hand for 10th Time vs. Artem Lobov at UFC Fight Night 108

Cub Swanson landed a whopping 209 significant strikes in his triumph over Artem Lobov at UFC Fight Night 108 , many of them with his hands. That figure was a UFC/WEC featherweight record, but it came with a price. In a brief update on UFC Tonight on Wednesday, Swanson revealed that he broke his left hand at some point during the 25-minute headliner at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tenn., last Saturday. “Unfortunately I just got back from the doctors; I don’t know when, but I broke my hand at some point,” Swanson said. “That’s the 10th time I’ve broken my hand now. That’s been a little bit of a problem. But I’ll heal up.” While Swanson controlled the majority of the fight thanks to a versatile offensive arsenal, he was never able to put Lobov away. According to the Jackson-Wink MMA representative, he could have padded his striking totals even more if his corner had gotten its way. “My coaches were yelling at me during the fight to keep throwing more punches, more combinations, but I was only throwing single shots because he had the hardest head,” Swanson said.

Future Twitter Live Video Streams Could Include UFC Bouts, According to Company Executive

The Ultimate Fighting Championship could be part of Twitter’s live video plans in the near future. In a recent interview with Buzzfeed News , Twitter COO and CFO Anthony Noto revealed the company’s intentions to have a constant presence of live video content on the platform, including sports, news and entertainment. "We will definitely have 24/7 [video] content on Twitter," Noto told Buzzfeed. "Our goal is to be a dependable place so that when you want to see what's happening, you think of going to Twitter.” In 2016, Twitter offered live streaming of 10 Thursday night NFL games. Amazon outbid Twitter for the streaming rights for the NFL for 2017, shelling out $50 million for 10 Thursday games. However, the NFL may have paved the way for other organizations, including the UFC, to air video on the platform. "We have a really big audience when there's a pay-per-view UFC match,” Noto said. “Should we provide that content to the audience on Twitter that's not watching it, but might like to after seeing tweets about it? That's something we'd consider.” According to the report, the NFL video stream package brought 3.

Late Sub Ugas Stops Lara in Second on PBC on FS1 Main Event

When Mario Barrios was removed from the latest edition of PBC on FS1’s “Toe-To-Toe Tuesdays” card, foe Nelson Lara probably should have pulled out as well. But Lara opted to go ahead and fight late replacement opponent Yordenis Ugas and it cost him in the welterweight showdown. Ugas (19-3, 9 KOs) stormed out of his corner in the main event Tuesday night and unloaded a furious barrage of punches to Lara’s body, with left hooks upstairs mixed in. Though he clipped Ugas with a looping overhand right, Lara was defensive throughout the opening round as he dealt with salvo after salvo and he never was about to get his offense going. After Lara (17-8-4, 9 KOs) was lacerated around his left eye from a right uppercut through the guard early in the second, he was sent to the canvas from a follow-up flurry. He struggled to his feet and wanted to continue, but referee Bill Clancy opted to call the fight due to the severity of the cut, officially ending the bout just 53 ticks into the second. In the co-main event inside the Fitz Tunica Casino and Hotel in Tunica, Miss., super welterweight contender Levan Ghvamichava dominated Oscar Molina for 10 rounds, winning a lopsided unanimous decision for his effort.
