UFC Fight Night 108 Prelims: Brandon Moreno Choke Silences Dustin Ortiz in Nashville

Brandon Moreno connects with a head kick and submits Dustin Ortiz with a rear naked choke! #UFCNashville — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) April 23, 2017 Brandon Moreno has begun to build serious equity in the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s top-heavy flyweight division. “The Ultimate Fighter 24” graduate strangled Dustin Ortiz unconscious with a rear-naked choke in the second round of their UFC Fight Night 108 “Swanson vs. Lobov” prelim on Saturday at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Moreno (14-3, 3-0 UFC) brought it to a close 4:06 into Round 1. Ortiz (16-7, 5-5 UFC), who had never before been finished, tried to bully the 23-year-old Mexican prospect, as he struck for repeated takedowns and pursued stifling tie-ups in the first round. His efforts proved fruitless. Moreno turned up the heat in the middle stanza with leg kicks and then sent the Roufusport product crashing to the canvas with a perfectly timed head kick. Ortiz survived the initial onslaught, but Moreno climbed to his back, secured his position with a body triangle and ultimately cinched the choke after an extended struggle.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Heavyweight

Heavyweight 1. Stipe Miocic (16-2) The UFC’s reigning and defending heavyweight champion has been outspoken recently about his desire for a newer, fatter contract, feeling as though he let himself down by being a “company man” and signing his previous deal without negotiating. However, Miocic will next get the chance to avenge his only loss in the last four years, as he faces former champion Junior dos Santos at UFC 211 on May 13 in Dallas. 2. Fabricio Werdum (21-6-1) If Werdum had his druthers and could choose a loss to avenge, it stands to reason that the former UFC heavyweight champion would want to rematch the man who took his title and humiliated him in front of 45,000 Brazilian fans: Stipe Miocic. However, if “Vai Cavalo” is to get a second crack at Miocic or the heavyweight champion's next challenger -- Junior dos Santos, who shockingly knocked out Werdum in his October 2008 UFC debut -- he will likely have to settle another score first: Werdum is expected to face rival Alistair Overeem in a rubber match at UFC 213 on July 8.

Beating the Odds: UFC Fight Night ‘Swanson vs. Lobov’

If skeptics remained, Brandon Moreno quieted them. The 23-year-old prospect stepped over another obstacle in the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s flyweight division, as he choked Dustin Ortiz unconscious in the second round of their UFC Fight Night “Swanson vs. Lobov” clash on Saturday at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Listed as a slight -120 favorite on, Ortiz succumbed to a rear-naked choke 4:06 into Round 2. He had never before been finished. Ortiz tried to big brother “The Ultimate Fighter 24” graduate throughout the first round, where he executed repeated takedowns and instigated a series of clinches. His approach failed to net the desired results. Moreno (+100) set the stage for the choke with a clean head kick, swarmed with punches, advanced to the back and consolidated his position with a body triangle. The dazed Ortiz struggled to free himself, to no avail. Moreno has rattled off 11 consecutive victories, eight of them by knockout, technical knockout or submission. “I tried to be more aggressive [in the second round], and that kick comes really easy to me,” Moreno said.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Texas: Evan Tanner

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it.

The Bottom Line: Cold Realities

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * The latest season of “The Ultimate Fighter” kicked off on April 19 with all the hallmarks of the more successful early editions of the show. The fighters featured more big personalities than usual, and the general theme of personal redemption made the stakes feel higher. Most importantly, the dynamic between the coaches was strong, with two upper-echelon competitors making no secret of their mutual disdain. “The Ultimate Fighter” at its advanced age possesses only a fraction of the power it once did to create stars and build pay-per-views, but the Cody Garbrandt - T.J. Dillashaw rivalry is exactly what you’d hope for to advance those goals. Garbrandt-Dillashaw in general has all the elements that are usually present for a big UFC fight. Both fighters are at the top of their game, with Garbrandt undefeated professionally and Dillashaw’s only defeats since 2011 coming via controversial split decisions.

Tom Breese ‘Out of the Game For a While;’ Reveals ACL, Meniscus Injuries on Instagram

Don't expect to see Tom Breese in the Octagon any time soon. In an Instagram post made on Monday, the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight revealed that he had torn the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus in his right knee and that he would be “out of the game for a while.” Here we go again. A post shared by Tom Breese (@breesemma) on Apr 24, 2017 at 7:12am PDT The 25-year-old Birmingham, England native has battled similar injuries throughout his young career. Following his December 2012 victory over Warren Kee , Breese spent nearly two full years on the shelf due to knee injuries. Breese's general luck has not been great recently, either. After beginning his career 10-0, the Brit suffered his first pro loss to Sean Strickland at UFC 199 last June. He was scheduled to return to action in March at UFC Fight Night 108, headlined by Jimi Manuwa 's first-round knockout of Corey Anderson , but he was pulled from what would have been his UFC middleweight debut against Oluwale Bamgbose just hours before the bout; Breese was deemed medically unfit to compete due to an irregular heart rate.

England's Darren Till meets Germany's Jessin Ayari at UFC Fight Night 109 in Sweden

Till will be returning to the octagon after a layoff of more than a year and a half. The Liverpool native made his promotional debut at UFC Fight Night 67 and knocked out Wendell Oliveira in the second round in Brazil. He returned in October 2015 and fought to a majority draw against Nicolas Dalby at UFC Fight Night 76 in Dublin. But he’s been on the shelf since that bout.

Steve Bosse vs. Jared Cannonier booked for July's TUF 25 Finale in Las Vegas

Cannonier will try to get back in the win column after a decision loss to former title challenger Glover Teixeira at UFC 208 in February in Brooklyn. Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Swanson vs. Lobov’

Artem Lobov had the desire but not the means with which to bring it to fruition. “The Russian Hammer” pursued Cub Swanson for five full rounds but wound up on the wrong side of a clear-cut unanimous decision against the longtime Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight contender in the UFC Fight Night 108 main event on Saturday at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Swanson swept the scorecards with 49-46, 49-46 and 50-45 marks from the judges. Lobov kept it competitive early. The SBG Ireland rep executed a surprise takedown in the first round and landed his left hand with regularity. Even so, Swanson put more and more distance between the two as time marched on. FightMetric figures outline his dominance: Swanson outlanded Lobov by a 209-123 margin in significant strikes and held a 251-134 advantage in total strikes. In the aftermath of UFC Fight Night 108 “Swanson vs. Lobov,” here are five matches that ought to be made ( bookmakers ): Cub Swanson vs. Chan Sung Jung : Swanson fired on all cylinders, as he improved to 4-0 since suffering back-to-back submission defeats to Frankie Edgar and Max Holloway .

Diego Sanchez responds to calls for his retirement following knockout loss | FOX Sports

This is a heart felt message for all the supporters of what I do but more importantly what I stand for as a athlete a man and warrior of the octagon, after evaluating the situation with a clear mind I have two options? The first is to feel sorry for myself start doubting myself, god and everything that makes me a winner? Thinking negative like many people would and even are the people that are not in my shoes the people who have no clue and just are so fast to throw out retirement and this and that? YOUR NOT ME! So just shut your mouths right now before even saying it, ITS NOT YOURS TO SAY! I speak from the heart and do not sugar coat SHIT! so there's that path the quitters path? Or there is the DIEGO path what being a Lionheart is all about it's about picking your self up when you fall learning how you fell and how to prevent it from happening again? This was the first KO of my career some fighters experience it more than ounce in over a decade of fighting the very best UFC has put in front of a man. Loosing is a part of this sport, I choose to believe in my god given abilities and had work earned talent! I choose to believe in my dream! I am confident, I am experienced, i am still very healthy, young for my physical age and more driven and hungry for success than ever.

By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night 108

In a peculiar main event against an opponent with nothing to lose, Cub Swanson maintained his focus. Swanson earned a unanimous decision over Artem Lobov in the UFC Fight Night 108 headliner in Nashville, Tenn., on Saturday night, but it wasn’t a cakewalk by any means. Swanson landed offense in bunches over five rounds with a diverse striking arsenal, but Lobov showcased a cast-iron chin in going the distance against the Jackson-Wink MMA standout. In avoiding the upset, Swanson moved one step closer to his dream of a featherweight title shot with his fourth consecutive triumph ( bookmakers ). Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 108, with statistics courtesy of 15: Victories in Ultimate Fighting Championship and World Extreme Cagefighting competition for Swanson, the second most in the combined history of the promotions behind only reigning 145-pound king Jose Aldo , who has 16 triumphs. 209: Significant strikes landed by Swanson, a UFC/WEC featherweight record. His previous best of 111 significant strikes landed occurred in his last outing, a three-round verdict over Doo Ho Choi at UFC 206.

UFC Cutman - Jacob "Stitch" Duran | London Real

Jacob "Stitch" Duran is a UFC & Boxing Cutman FULL FREE EPISODE: Bulletproof Coffee SUBSCRIBE: Jacob "Stitch" Duran is the most famous UFC and Boxing Cutman in the business. Since 2002 he has been wrapping hands and closing cuts in the UFC Octagon and I personally can't remember an event without him. In boxing the Klitschko Brothers always fly him to Europe to work their corners and Sylvester Stallone puts him in movies. He's more likely to be recognised on the street than most fighters. Sounds like a pretty simple gig right? Not really. Stitch is a psychologist, doctor, and coach all rolled up into one. He has 55 seconds between rounds to stop the bleeding, apply the cold and pressure, calm the fighter, and give confidence with his presence. All of this is done with one goal in mind: to give that fighter "One More Round." Born into a migrant camp in California, he was working in the fields at 5 years of age. From there he enlisted in the Air Force and went to Thailand where he would fall in love with kickboxing before returning home to America to start his own school.

Tecia Torres brings up the important issue of Body Image

Truth be told, for as long as I can remember I’ve struggled with my body image. Thanks to my parents I am naturally gifted with a muscular petite frame. Growing up I was on the sour end of bullying, to the point were girls in my middle school class would draw a “masculine muscular” looking women on the board, in an attempt to make fun of me. It worked. I felt alone and like my body was different. Looking back I was different. My young body was a product of my hard work. I’ve been a martial artist since age 5 and I’ve always been an athlete. During these years, adult woman would always stop my mom and ask what I did. They loved my body. I never could quite grasp why they would want my figure for their own. Fast forward to a Mixed Martial Arts career in the @ufc. The bullying began again with other adult women competitors speaking up as if they had known me my entire life or were apart of my daily activity. Because I am in such phenomenal shape I must me using some type of performance enhancing drug. On The Ultimate Fighter rumor had it I was throwing up. I’ve always found these comments so hilarious.
