Jon Jones faces Ovince Saint Preux for interim title at UFC 197

Jon Jones will now face Ovince Saint Preux in the main event at UFC 197 with the interim light heavyweight title on the line

Nate Diaz is 'sick of hearing' Conor McGregor praised for losing and wanting rematch

"I was one pound heavier (than McGregor) at the weigh-ins. There was a rumor I was walking around at 183 pounds. When I left my room to fight Conor McGregor I was 179 pounds. That means by the time I walked in the cage, I was probably 175, 174 pounds. So I wasn't no big (expletive) either. He's fighting a lightweight and he's getting all this praise and I'm over hearing it. I don't ever get no praise on mine. I really did move up two weight classes and fought a big (expletive) and TKO'd his ass in the first round."

Frankie Edgar: I'm going to make Jose Aldo wilt, I'm going to put him away

"He could be second guessing himself," Edgar said about Aldo. "Conor threw one punch and it's over in 13 seconds, that's a tough pill to swallow and we've got a lot of pride as competitors. That eats at your pride and your ego. He's going to have to deal with all these emotions leading up to this. He didn't lose for 10 years, he's a winner and I'm sure he'll bounce back. I'm expecting this fight to be all it's cracked up to be.

"Thing is, Jon has never lost his title in the Octagon," White said. "He was stripped of his title because of problems outside. We think it's the right thing to do. Rousimar Palhares and Garry Tonon Submission-Only Match Ends in Draw

Read our report from the submission-only match between Rousimar 'Toquinho' Palhares and Garry Tonon that went down on Polaris 3.  Garry Tonon vs Rousimar 'Toquinho' Palhares (no gi): Tonon wasted no time in diving for Toquinho’s legs. The Brazilian showed no fear of Tonon’s attacks, happily twisting and turning his opponent’s legs while Tonon worked his set-ups for an inside heel hook. The crowd would go wild every time Tonon came close to grabbing one of Toquinho’s feet. Back on the feet Toquinho launched Tonon with a huge suplex, dropping the young American black belt onto his back and getting a roar of approval from the crowd in the process. Unfazed, Tonon worked from his back and even looked for a triangle from guard but Toquinho’s strength and power saw him easily shrug off the lightweight’s attack. More than once Palhares launched Tonon head over heels with wrestling-style leg attacks, but to his credit Tonon didn’t seem at all bothered and would continue to hunt for his positions. Tonon showed some good wrestling skills of his own, coming close to getting Palhares’ back with a sequence that started from standing but once again the Brazilian’s power saw him easily escape.

Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ Filipovic: 5 Defining Moments

Mirko Filipovic in his prime was as destructive and frightening a force as the mixed martial arts world has ever seen, and his signature sound bite said it all: “Right leg, hospital. Left leg, cemetery.” The 2006 Pride Fighting Championships open weight grand prix winner will go down as one of the 10 best heavyweights in MMA history, alongside such contemporaries as Fedor Emelianenko and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira . His extensive resume includes victories over Japanese legend Kazushi Sakuraba , Olympic gold medalists Hidehiko Yoshida and Satoshi Ishii (twice), Brazilian juggernaut Wanderlei Silva and three former Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholders: Kevin Randleman , Mark Coleman and Josh Barnett (three times). Filipovic boasts 28 finishes among his 31 career wins, many of them immortalized on highlight reels across the globe. He was a member of the Lucko Anti-Terrorist Unit, a Special Forces branch of the Croatian police: Hence the nickname “Cro Cop.” In a career littered with defining moments, here are five that stand out: 1.

Anderson Silva on Vitor Belfort Rematch: ‘He Already Experienced the Bad Smell of My Foot’

One of the highlights of the recent UFC 198 press conference in Curitiba, Brazil, resulted from a question posed by Combate reporter Andre Azevedo , who asked Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort about a possible rematch in the future. The two men fought at UFC 126 in February 2011, as Silva knocked out Belfort with a front kick to the face. “You guys are probably the only fighters in MMA history who have been fighting at a high level for 19 consecutive years, and your fight changed the history of Brazilian MMA, just like Stephan Bonnar and Forrest Griffin did in the United States,” Azevedo said. “Would you agree to make a rematch of that historic fight before you retire?” Silva initially declined to answer, so Belfort got on the microphone. “The Phenom” will face former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo Souza in the UFC 198 co-main event on May 14. “I’m really focused on my goal, which is the title,” Belfort said. “When we fought, it was a big deal because we had trained together, but I knew that fight would break barriers and open new fields for the sport.

22 Daniel Cormier apologizes to Jon Jones, UFC; sidelined 4-to-6 weeks with injury

The decision to not fight on April 23rd was one of the hardest decisions I've had to make. I've been scheduled to fight 18 times and I have made that walk every time. I want to apologize to Jon Jones, Lorenzo Fertitta, Dana White and all of the UFC fans for not being able to defend my title. This truly saddens me, but as with everything else in life, it goes on. The recovery should not take very long and I can't wait to compete and defend my title again. For all the fans, thanks for your support, I appreciate each and every one of you. DC

Anderson Silva Interested in Future Superfights Against Georges St. Pierre, Conor McGregor

While Anderson Silva will be making a rare appearance outside the main event at UFC 198 , he still stole the show during a pre-fight press conference on Wednesday. Although he shared the dais with eight stars of the May 14 event in Curitiba, Silva received the most media attention. And the former middleweight champion answered all types of questions. The press conference began with a reporter asking Silva if he is still a role model for Brazilian children despite having recently tested positive for steroids. “The Spider” believes nothing has changed his relationship with the youth in his country. “I don´t see it that way. I feel the children keep treating me the same way and I have a good image,” he said. “I have no problems talking about that. Just to end this whole doping thing, I went very quickly from a guy who’s on steroids, to a guy who’s on nothing. With my voice, I don’t use anything; I don’t have any problems with doping. It doesn’t affect my legacy or my career in any way.” Silva also talked about the future of Brazilian MMA. “I came from one generation where we had great idols of MMA in Brazil, and I looked up to them to achieve what I did,” he said.

Humorous Fabricio Werdum Lightens UFC 198 Mood, Eyes Stipe Miocic Title Defense

Fabricio Werdum stole the show with his humor. Werdum will defend his Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic in the UFC 198 main event on May 14 in Curitiba, Brazil. At the pre-fight press conference, “Vai Cavalo” broke the ice by snatching the microphone and making sure everyone knew who was on the marquee. “You see Vitor Belfort , Anderson Silva , [Mauricio] ‘Shogun’ [Rua] and all these legends here, but as you can see, on the poster my picture is the biggest,” Werdum said. “That means the event is mine, so I want to welcome everybody to the press conference. Feel free to ask any questions you want, but there is only one request: Anderson will answer a maximum of five questions. Let’s start.” After the press conference, Werdum spoke to Sherdog about his sparring session with Wanderlei Silva , the former Pride Fighting Championships titleholder who recently agreed to terms with the Bellator MMA organization. Tongue was planted softly in cheek. “Wanderlei arrived at the academy with vale tudo gloves on and, with his wild west style, said Curitiba was his city and that no heavyweight would rule it,” Werdum said.

10 April Tussles Worth Watching

In an effort to bring more attention to the global stage of mixed martial arts, this list does not focus on major North American-based promotions such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Bellator MMA and the World Series of Fighting: The One Championship stage once again belongs to Ben Askren . Askren will defend his welterweight crown against Nikolay Aleksakhin in the One Championship 40 “Global Rivals” main event on April 15 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines. The two headliners will be subject to One Championship’s recently adopted weigh-in policy, which requires athletes to compete at their “walking around” weight. The undefeated Askren had a forgettable 2015 campaign. The 31-year-old Roufusport rep has not fought since April 24, when his meeting with Luis Santos ended in a no-contest due to an inadvertent eye poke a little more than two minutes into the first round. Their November rematch was then scrapped when Santos failed to make weight. A four-time NCAA All-American wrestler and two-time national champion at the University of Missouri, Askren competed at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing before shifting gears to MMA.

This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Megumi Fujii Turns 42

She was for a time the benchmark in women’s MMA. Megumi Fujii will celebrate her 42nd birthday on April 26. Fujii started her remarkable career 22-0 with 19 finishes, as she utilized armbars, heel hooks, keylocks and various chokes to blitz through Shooto and Smackgirl . “Mega Megu” was past her prime when she joined the Bellator MMA ranks but continue her run of excellence until a split decision loss to Zoila Frausto in October 2010 snapped her long winning streak. Fujii rebounded with three straight victories before being outpointed by American Top Team ’s Jessica Aguilar at Bellator 69. She retired following a technical decision loss to Aguilar in their rematch on Oct. 5, 2013 in Tokyo. A black belt in judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Fujii closed the book on her career with a 26-3 record. She finished six of those wins in less than a minute. Others in MMA celebrating a birthday during the month of April: APRIL 1 Vitor Belfort (39) Derek Campos (28) Ramsey Nijem (28) APRIL 2 Luiz Cane (35) Cole Konrad (32) Yi Sak Kim (30) Benedict Ang (20) APRIL 3 Chael Sonnen (39) Kazunori Yokota (38) Travis Reddinger (34) Su Noto (31) APRIL 4 Ray Mercer (55) Stephan Bonnar (39) Rafael Cavalcante (36) Brian Foster (32) Riku Shibuya (31) Ruben Esparza (28) APRIL 5 James Wilks (38) Jianbing Yang (32) APRIL 6 Marcus Brimage (31) Geje Eustaquio (27) APRIL 7 David Baggett (36) Russ Miura (35) Michael Page (29) APRIL 8 Ovince St.

Opinion: The Intrigue of Newness

Who would have guessed that it would be an injured Daniel Cormier and not an incarcerated Jon Jones who would derail the highly anticipated rematch between current and former light heavyweight champions? After it was announced that Cormier would be unable to make it to the April 23 showdown with his nemesis due to a leg injury, there was a brief period of uncertainty. After all, this is the same Jones that turned down a short-notice fight with Chael Sonnen at UFC 151 in 2012. Thankfully, Jones remained the card’s anchor, but instead of a grudge match for the undisputed championship, he will now face a new opponent in Ovince St. Preux for an interim belt at UFC 197 . It is hard to deny the intrigue that a second Jones-Cormier fight piqued, but if I’m being honest, I think I prefer the St. Preux fight. At least, I like what it represents: a change. The genius of Jones is in his lethal adaptability. In both his pre-fight preparation and in the heat of a fight, Jones seems to have all the answers for whatever is thrown at him.

The Farm Report: Gregor Gillespie Retains Ring of Combat Title

Gregor Gillespie has just about outgrown his current surroundings. The undefeated prospect disposed of Jose Mariscal with first-round punches to retain the Ring of Combat lightweight championship in the Ring of Combat 54 main event on March 4 at the Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, N.J. Mariscal lasted longer than any of Gillespie’s previous five opponents but nevertheless succumbed to punches 4:09 into round one. Gillespie was a four-time NCAA All-American wrestler at Edinboro University in Pennsylvania, where he won a national championship in 2007. The 29-year-old still ranks first on Edinboro’s all-time list in career wins (152) and winning percentage (.917), and he remains one of only two wrestlers -- Josh Koscheck is the other -- in school history to earn All-America honors four times. A Long Island MMA rep, Gillespie has already spoken of a hypothetical move to the Ultimate Fighting Championship . “I would love for a short-notice fight in [the] UFC to pop up,” he told in a September interview .

Boxing’s Greats of the States | Idaho: Young Firpo

Boxers come from every corner of the globe. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring styles prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best boxer of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. For example, all-time great heavyweight legend Joe Louis was born in Alabama, but he is identified almost universally with Detroit. *** Idaho has always been known more for its potatoes than its contributions to the Sweet Science. However, that does not mean the “Gem State” has been devoid of boxing history. One man stands above the rest on the list of accomplished Idaho boxers: Guido Bardelli, better known as Young Firpo. Born in Vermont in 1907, Firpo moved to northern Idaho with his mother and family following the death of his father.

Jon Jones Taunts Daniel Cormier For Pulling Out Of UFC 197

It’s no secret that Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier aren’t friends, and not really even cordial towards each other. The two genuinely don’t like one another, so when Cormier pulled out of their UFC 197 light heavyweight title fight, Jones couldn’t help but throw another jab at Daniel, this time in reference to his line during their face off with Joe Rogan. Jon Jones will now face Ovince St. Preux for the interim light heavyweight title on April 23rd in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Jon Jones and Ovince St. Preux, Side By Side Comparison, Who You got..?

The UFC 197 main event underwent a massive change yesterday as Jon Jones will now meet Ovince St. Preux for the interim UFC light heavyweight title.  The current champion Daniel Cormier was forced to pull out, and after many names were thrown around as possible replacements, OSP will now get the opportunity of a lifetime when he gets his chance at UFC gold at UFC 197.

‘TUF: Smashes’ Winner Norman Parke Announces UFC Release

Norman Parke , the lightweight winner of “The Ultimate Fighter: The Smashes,” has been released by the UFC. I’m now looking to fight this summer so whatever comes up I’ll be ready to go!! On any show anywhere. “Thank you to all my fans for following my journey. I will be back. Parke last competed at UFC Fight Night in London on Feb. 27, where he suffered a unanimous decision loss to Rustam Khabilov , his third defeat in his last four Octagon appearances. Previous setbacks to Francisco Trinaldo and Gleison Tibau came via split decision.

45 Grateful Jon Jones Sends Message To OSP Before UFC 197 Fight

One of the most anticipated main-events of the year was put on hold after it was announced that Daniel Cormier would be pulling out of UFC 197. His opponent, Jon Jones, usually doesn’t take fights on short notice but felt he owed it to his fans to give them a fight.

Opinion: The Man, His Myths and the Devil Inside Him

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. This week’s latest controversy in the life of Jon Jones was a multi-pronged reminder of several inalienable facts, no matter how we might wish these truths were different. Jones, perhaps the greatest fighter to ever grace a cage, is an antisocial terror behind the wheel of a car, whether his transgressions are relatively inert, like revving his engine with a modified tailpipe in traffic, or legitimately scary, like his penchant for DUIs and in some cases fleeing the scene. Meanwhile, the monstrous Albuquerque Police Department, in the wake of the James Boyd shooting and reaching a settlement last year with the Department of Justice over the DOJ’s scathing report detailing the department’s excessive force and violence, continues to operate however it sees fit. This column is not a splitting of the pie chart of blame and handing out the appropriate pieces.

UFC Middleweight Yoel Romero Accepts 6-Month Suspension for Tainted Supplement

UFC middleweight contender Yoel Romero will be eligible to return to the cage this summer after accepting a six-month ban from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. USADA on Monday announced terms of the sanction, imposed as a result of Romero violating the UFC Anti-Doping Policy. Romero, 38, tested positive for the growth hormone secretagogue Ibutamoren in an out-of-competition drug test conducted on Dec. 16, 2015, four days after the American Top Team fighter took a split decision against Ronaldo Souza at UFC 194 . USADA noted that the drug was not present in Romero’s “fight night” test result, and as such, his win over Souza will not be overturned. Romero’s six-month ban is retroactive to Jan. 12, 2016, the date upon which he was notified of the positive drug test and provisionally suspended from competition. That means the “Soldier of God” could be back inside the Octagon as early as July 12. According to USADA’s statement, the organization’s testing “conclusively confirmed” that Romero’s positive test was the result of a contaminated dietary supplement, the label of which did not disclose the presence of Ibutamoren.

BEEF! Jones Blasts D.C. Hard In Twitter Rant For Offering To Train OSP April 4, 2016April 4, 2016 Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier don’t need to have a fight booked to be at odds with one-another. Earlier today Cormier was quoted in saying that he would train OSP for free in order to ready him for his upcoming tilt against Jones.
