Top Ten: The First Quarter's Best Moments

We're only in April, and UFC fans have already seen a host of great fights and great moments. What are the best of the first three months of 2014? Read on to find out... 10. Fabio Maldonado’s comeback win at UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Henderson 2 How do you not love Fabio Maldonado? The former Brazilian boxer owned a 22-0 record in his previous sport with a frightening 21 wins by knockout. Maldonado jumped into the MMA cage and rattled off a 17-3 record with 11 KO/TKO wins and was on an absurd 10 fight win streak when he joined the UFC. In his Octagon debut, Maldonado showed off his brutal body shots in a third round TKO of English kickboxer James McSweeney at UFC 120. Following that, Maldonado endured a three-fight losing skid where he continued to display his imposing stand-up as well as a granite chin and a clear unwillingness to cave to any opponent. Then, Maldonado found new life with a three-fight win streak, including his unanimous decision win in March over former NCAA Division I wrestler and football player Gian Villante . The first round was all Villante, with his superior grappling, control, and knees to the legs and body.

Alan Omer on fighting identity: "If you've looked death in the face the way I did, you're scared of no man"

My goal is to become the best in the world. I'm not joining the UFC to just take part in the combat, but to finally make a run for that belt. I don't feel any pressure. I enjoy what I do and I love fighting. My family and I survived two wars. Inside the Octagon, I'm just fighting one unarmed man. If you've looked death in the face the way I did, you're scared of no man. Fighting is fun! Outside of fighting you earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Is that where your future lies? Are you planning a second career alongside fighting, or after it? My father is a respected doctor in Iraq and my mom has been always there for me and has been caring selflessly for me for the last 25 years. Our deal was for me to earn my degree before I pursue a full-time career in fighting. That time is now. I feel that I still have 6-8 years left to become a great fighter and create a legacy in fighting. Once I'm done fighting, I can always go back and work for Mercedes Benz or Porsche. Your most recent camp was at Alliance MMA. Are you moving there permanently? Or is Stallion Cage still your ma

T.J. Dillashaw says he is a better athlete than Renan Barao

I'm relieved about not fighting in Brazil. It's going to be good to fight where my family and friends can watch and I won't have to cross a continent and adapt to the time zone. I love Brazil, I have nothing against the country, but I think that I won my fight against Assunçao. I have lost in a split decision, I think the judges scored badly, and I had the feeling that I was being robbed. It's going to be good to fight in Las Vegas because it's a neutral territory.

WWE WrestleMania XXX Live Results, Play-by-Play, Discussion

The two went back-and-forth some more before Triple H hit his signature Pedigree, but Bryan managed to kick out at two. He went for the Pedigree again, but Bryan held out, so Triple H leveled him with two vicious knees to the head. Triple H went for Pedigree again, but Bryan escapes. HHH went for a back suplex, but Bryan flipped out of it and hit the flying knee to win the match and move on to the main event. But after the match, HHH attacked Bryan, running his shoulder into the post and then hitting it viciously with a steel chair.

Sorting out the three-woman race to Ronda Rousey (with obligatory mention of Alexis Davis)

It’s possible that Ronda Rousey , safely secluded on one movie set or other, finds herself blissfully unaware of all the people lining up for the chance to punch her in the face. She no longer checks her Twitter mentions, after all, and her management -- a link to the outside -- is in a state of reconstruction. Such is life in showbiz. Regardless, this might be the single most compelling point in time for women’s MMA because right now there are three potential foes in the loaming, and all of them look viable to stand across from Rousey in the Octagon when she comes back in early fall (or, you know, whenever). There’s Gina Carano , herself a Hollywood segueist, who hasn’t fought in five years but strikes a cool money chord with a big money promotion. There’s Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino, the longtime Strikeforce featherweight champion and current Invicta champ, who is currently whittling herself into bantamweight proportions. And there’s Holly Holm , the free agent boxing-turned-MMA champion who on Saturday night booted Brazilian Juliana Werner into the nosebleeds to win the Legacy title.

The Patrick Cummins Coda: 'I'm still the same guy I was before'

Cummins had an inkling what he was getting into on that fateful February morning when UFC president Dana White called him while he was on the job at a mom-and-pop Dana Point, Calif. coffee shop. White was offering Cummins, with no major-promotion experience, an opportunity to meet Cormier, the undefeated former Strikeforce heavyweight tournament champion, as a replacement for Rashad Evans, who pulled out of the fight with a knee injury.

How Team Takedown is changing the approach to building MMA champions

“In MMA, how many times have you heard trainers complain about not getting paid?” Laimon said. “You work with a guy and he starts having success, then it’s like, ‘I’m going to go work with someone else,’ just so he doesn’t have to pay you. That’s one of the most heartbreaking and crushing things on this side of the business. You help guys and then when they get a big contract they’re basically like, ‘F–k you, I’m not going to pay you.’ But with the way Team Takedown is set up, I never missed a check. Not once. They treated me so well, and I saw the way they treated the fighters so well, it took a little bit of faith, but I always thought it was going to work.”

12 Rewind: Down to Business with Charles 'Konnan' Ashenoff - MMA Radio - Sherdog.com

It's clear now that Anderson Silva and Georges St. Pierre are out of the sport indefinitely, and that Brock Lesnar and Chuck Liddell have faded into MMA's past, that Jon Jones is the leading candidate for face of the UFC. Yet his pay-per-view numbers and connection with the public belies that stature, almost contradicts it. Every tweet he sends, every comment he makes, it seems, generates more negative energy than positive energy. Is that a problem? An opportunity? Immaterial? On the latest "Down To Business" edition of the Sherdog Radio Network "Rewind," host Jack Encarnacao welcomes a guest with a unique perspective to unpack this question. On the week of the biggest event in pro wrestling, Wrestlemania, Jack welcomes veteran star wrestler and television producer Charles "Konnan" Ashenoff to the program to talk about the state of how Jones is viewed by the public and tweaks that could be made. Jack and Konnan, a close observer of MMA and boxing, also talk about Ronda Rousey 's magnetism, whether Twitter helps or hurts a fighter in becoming a star, and the UFC's elusive goal of creating a Mexican superstar.

Trading Shots: Downes and Fowlkes on throwing the damn towel

I suppose it’s important to keep shining the light on the risks of the sport, but what are we really accomplishing other than patting ourselves on the back? It’s like the guy who reads a Michael Pollen book for the first time. He’ll lecture you about GMOs, Monsanto and industrial agriculture, but does he ever change his eating habits? You know he’s hitting up Taco Bell for their new breakfast menu this week. Is the safety argument just about being on a high horse? And if it’s not, then what’s the ultimate goal? The NFL can make rule changes, but that won’t be so easy in MMA.

Fedor Emelianenko talks about raising children and what happened with brother Alex

I've been raised, but not in a religious way. My family is christian orthodox, but we never went to church. But we lived by the general principles, what is good and what is bad, always explained me, always taught me to respect old people. During those times even schools taught us to help the younger, to respect and help the elder. Some kind of hierarchy. In all books, in all stories they told us to do good and the bad was always condemned. So the understandment of good and evil was clear, not like today. Today evil is represented as good and the other way. So it's necessary to teach children, to show them the right way. First of all you have to set good examples. If you will not live the right way, your kids will not either.

UFC Fight Night 39 pre-fight facts: Nogueira looks to halt surge in knockdowns

Andrew Craig  (9-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) defeated Rafael Natal at UFC on FUEL TV 4 despite finishing with 50 fewer significant strikes landed. Craig’s -50 significant strike differential is the second largest margin ever in a UFC fight featuring a come-from-behind finish. Anderson Silva leads the category for his fifth-round submission of Chael Sonnen at UFC 117, which featured a -60 differential.

For female MMA fighters, training with men an inevitability that carries as much risk as reward

Men face no gender where they are at near constant disadvantage when it comes to physical prowess. Whatever challenges they may face in the course of their career, it is highly unlikely men will ever succumb to the contours of gender discrimination at any gym. And while female fighters glean some benefit from training with men, the inverse isn't necessarily true, at least not to the same degree. Women also must deal with a gender in predominant number that, as Pena's situation underscores, offer the significant potential for injury both small and catastrophic.

Moves of the month: A quick look at the roster changes of March

It's been a hectic month for the UFC roster. After months of new fighters and nary a cut in sight, the UFC finally let the other shoe drop and started trimming the roster up a bit. Unfortunately for fighters who may have hoped to see a looser reined policy when it came to giving them a chance to win in the UFC, it appears to be back to business as usual with several fighters seeing the fall of the ax after only one or two losses. It continues to be a harsh world for fighters, even in the world's largest promotion.

Dana White on ‘Cyborg’ Justino: She’ll be mismanaged until her career is over

Dana White says Cristiane Justino ’s recent defeat in muay Thai competition has no effect on her chances of fighting in the UFC. However, that’s mostly because he doesn’t intend on offering “Cyborg” a contract anytime soon.

Welcome to the UFC Alex White

White has power and submission acumen, and he has a decent collection of striking skills, but what I've seen of his fights suggests that he has a ways to go before he puts that all together. Estevan Payan is the perfect introductory fight for him. A solid, veteran brawler without a ton of finishing potential. If White is going to show himself as a fighter to watch, this is the opponent for him to do it against. I might not pick him to beat most of the featherweight division, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him get the finish in his first UFC bout.
