Boxing: Manny Pacquiao and the Encroachment of Age
Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those

Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company,
Evolve Media.
The encroachment of age is something no boxer can stave off
indefinitely. At first, it approaches even the finest practitioners
of the pugilistic arts almost imperceptibly, on little cat’s feet,
but the sound eventually becomes noisy enough that it can no longer
be disregarded.
As the days count down to his pay-per-view rubber match with
Timothy
Bradley on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas,
one has to wonder if the sound of those little cat’s feet in the
mind of 37-year-old Manny
Pacquiao has been replaced by the clamor of a snarling,
charging tiger. No fighter wants to entertain doubts about his
athletic mortality, and that is especially so for those who know
the giddy feeling of having been touched by greatness. The best of
the best are almost always adherents to the message of resistance
authored by British poet Dylan Thomas, who wrote:
Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

The Bottom Line: Enough Already with These Interim Titles
Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those
of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of
Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company,
Evolve Media.
Championships in boxing are subjects of derision and ridicule,
symbols of what’s wrong with that sport. There are a number of
champions at every weight class because of the multiple sanctioning
bodies. The sanctioning bodies in their quest for more money take
it a step further, often creating “super” and “interim” champions
in addition to the “regular” champions. MMA fans have it a lot
better. The best fighters tend to end up squaring off in every
weight class, and we usually have a true champion in every
division. That’s why the rise of the interim champions in the
Ultimate Fighting Championship is a rather disconcerting
trend.
It was one thing when Conor
McGregor and Chad Mendes
fought for the interim featherweight title. It was problematic in a
number of ways, but at least they were two of the division’s elite,
both of whom deserved to be competing for a championship.

‘Rampage’ Jackson vs. Satoshi Ishii to Headline Bellator ‘Dynamite 2’ on June 24
Quinton
Jackson will make his Bellator
MMA return this summer.
The light heavyweight known as “Rampage” will face Olympic gold
medalist Satoshi
Ishii in the Bellator
“Dynamite 2” headliner on June 24 in St. Louis. Promotion
officials confirmed the news to Sherdog following an initial report
from
ESPN.com .
Bellator “Dynamite 2” will take place at Scottrade Center and
feature a mix of MMA and kickboxing bouts. Jackson-Ishii will be
contested at a 215-pound catch-weight. The California-based
promotion debuted its “Dynamite” series last September in San Jose,
Calif. Earlier this year, Bellator announced plans to promote its
own kickboxing events after previously partnering with Glory World
Series.
Jackson’s Bellator return was announced in February as the two
parties reached an
"amicable agreement” after a lengthy legal struggle over the
fighter’s contract status. “Rampage” was temporarily allowed to
compete for the UFC, and he outpointed Fabio
Maldonado at UFC 186 in April 2015. Prior to that, Jackson went
3-0 in Bellator with wins over Muhammed
Lawal , Joey
Beltran and Christian M’Pumbu.

Opinion: The Problem With Accepting Short-Notice Fights
Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those
of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of
Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company,
Evolve Media.
As we all know, injuries are a part of the game when it comes to
mixed martial arts. They often come at the most inopportune times
and have left gaping holes in highly-anticipated events. In some
cases, injuries have tanked an entire card. But it’s something that
we MMA fans have come to understand over the years and
organizations like the
Ultimate Fighting Championship have stated that they will look
into ways to make training less of an injury risk for their
fighters.
But one thing that has become increasingly interesting is the
notion that a fighter needs to take a short-notice fight when the
opponent that he or she has been training for ends up being on the
shelf with an injury. There’s a certain amount of pressure that we
have put on fighters to keep cards intact. However, what we don’t
pay attention to is how it can affect the future of a fighter.
