It has been a year and a half since the undisputed Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight title has been up for grabs. After Daniel Cormier defeated Anthony Johnson in May 2015 and captured the championship vacated by Jon Jones , the belt has been defended once and interrupted several times. Jones came back to win an interim title against Ovince St. Preux a year ago but was forced out of a unification bout with Cormier at UFC 200 after a last-second United States Anti-Doping Agency violation. Then, the rematch between Cormier and Johnson was scheduled for UFC 206 in December, only to be scrapped by an injury to the champion. Finally, the promotion’s most storied title will be contested again when Cormier meets Johnson in the UFC 210 main event on Saturday in Buffalo, New York. Cormier was last in action against Anderson Silva in July, when he took a lopsided unanimous decision and handed the former middleweight champion his first loss at 205 pounds. Last year was the first time since 2012 that Cormier only fought once in a calendar year, and this will be his first fight of 2017 ( online sportsbooks ).

The NBA, NFL, NHL, and the MLB have long been staples in American sports culture. One way or another, you’re a fan or at least familiar with one of those sports. However, as time progresses, there’s always room for additional entertainment. The UFC has proven that today; mixed martial arts now has a place in mainstream sports. Is it the high impact and violence that catches our attention? The bright lights and intensity of fight night that grabs our focus? Perhaps it’s the endless fighting techniques that we can’t fathom yet can’t get enough of. Either way, the UFC is only getting bigger, and so is our love for the sport.

It was supposed to have been a signature moment in Melvin Manhoef ’s mixed martial arts career. He was in the Bellator 155 main event against Rafael Carvalho on May 20 in Boise, Idaho, the Bellator MMA middleweight championship up for grabs. Not much went right for Manhoef. Typically an aggressive, in-your-face knockout machine, he fought cautiously against Carvalho. The Brazilian entered the cage on a 12-fight winning streak, having just upset Brandon Halsey for the 185-pound title. For whatever reason, Melvin Manhoef did not fight like Melvin Manhoef. He paid for it on the scorecards, losing a controversial split decision after five rounds. Looking back, the Dutch destroyer has zeroed in on what went wrong. “If you look at all my fights, I always come hard and knock people out,” Manhoef told Sherdog.com. “I’ve always done that, but in that first fight, it wasn’t how I usually fight. Some people were complaining that I wasn’t myself, that I was too cautious, but I still won. With this fight, I’m going to go back to my usual self and put a lot of pressure on him. The fans want me to be [aggressive], so I will.

C.J. Hamilton made the most of his time on the Legacy Fighting Alliance marquee. Hamilton extended his winning streak to six fights with a unanimous decision over Michigan Top Team’s Jesse Bazzi in the Legacy Fighting Alliance 8 headliner on Friday at the TD Convention Center in Greenville, South Carolina. All three judges scored it 30-27. A two-time national wrestling champion at Anderson University, Hamilton kept his opponent at bay with kicks to the legs and body, incorporated a second-round takedown, profited from the chaotic standup exchanges he created and proved quicker on the trigger with his punches. He even found time to mix in jumping knee, an axe kick and a spinning back fist. In the welterweight co-main event, Bellator MMA veteran Jeremie Holloway wiped out journeyman Dave Vitkay with first-round punches. Vitkay succumbed to blows 2:55 into Round 1, his run of seven consecutive victories at an end. Holloway popped “The A-Town Ogre” with a stinging jab, tore into him with multi-punch combinations and denied his bids for takedowns. Trapped on the feet, Vitkay was a fish in a barrel.
