Stories From The Road: Josh Barnett

An underlying theme permeates throughout the legends: They fight for neither money nor fame. They do it because they love it and always have. Guys like Josh Barnett were forged in the furnace of the unappreciated. He went anywhere to find a fight, one time circumventing a brief family “intervention” about his passion. They were concerned about his future. Barnett did everything from cleaning and mopping a dojo in exchange for training to traveling hundreds of miles to some obscure place, not knowing whether or not there would even be a fight at the end of the journey. An interesting turning point came when he was sophomore at the University of Montana, around the age of 20. He was approached about his calling, which eventually transformed “The Warmaster” into an all-time great mixed martial arts heavyweight. “I don’t know if you would call it an intervention or not, but it kind of felt that way from my grandfather, my dad and mom basically encouraging me to stay in school,” Barnett said. “The meeting was something organic. My grandfather is a lawyer and a very bright man.

Belal Muhammad Overwhelms Steve Carl, Captures Titan FC Welterweight Crown

Belal Muhammad turned the Titan Fighting Championship 38 headliner into his personal showcase. The Chicago native overwhelmed former World Series of Fighting titlist Steve Carl to capture the promotion’s vacant welterweight strap on Saturday at the Miccosukee Casino in Miami. “Remember the Name” ended his streak of five consecutive decision victories, as he put a halt to the contest with punches on the ground 4:07 into the fourth round, handing Carl (22-5) just his second defeat in his last 10 outings. “Everybody was calling me out, saying I can’t finish fights,” Muhammad said. “I take them to my ocean. I’m a shark. Anybody that comes into the cage with me, they’re going down.” The bout gradually turned into a battle for survival for Carl, who struggled to put together any kind of meaningful offense. Muhammed (9-0) relied on his distinct speed advantage to batter his opponent with crisp punching combinations and kicks, and the cumulative damage eventually took its toll. Muhammed bloodied Carl’s nose in the second frame and then shifted gears in round three, as he hurt his foe with attacks to the body and nearly finished the contest with a barrage of ground-and-pound at the end of the frame.

Opinion: How Conor McGregor vs. the UFC Became a Win-Win

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. For better or worse, this UFC 200 debacle involving Conor McGregor and the Ultimate Fighting Championship has gone from public-relations disaster to a massive coup for the MMA promotion. Although there are fans who are disgruntled with the fact that everybody’s favorite Irish fighter will no longer compete at the UFC’s biggest event, somehow this has managed to become an immensely profitable situation. Yes, UFC 200 was dealt a blow when McGregor decided that being a globetrotting trash talker wasn’t a necessity; and now that Nate Diaz is likely following him out the door and into a vacation -- only those close to the Stockton, California, fighter have a clue what a Diaz Brothers Family Vacation would look like -- the UFC actually finds itself in a great position. The reason why: McGregor hasn’t retired and Diaz only wants to fight McGregor.

Postal Connections: Dedicated Entirely to Conor McGregor -- Almost

Great piece, but listen, we in Ireland have a bigger interest in this beyond samurai save face business strategy. To us, this is genuinely a Zeitgeist movement. Conor represents something to us that’s so timely and important right now as we reach the hundred-year anniversary of our Rising against the English. This whole year here revolves around standing up as a nation and taking our identity back by force. This year could be a real political and cultural shift moment here, as we drag ourselves out of the rubble of the financial crisis and as our government tries to form out of a fire of discontent and protests. Conor’s rise in MMA has given us all somebody and something to get behind more than anything since our soccer team in Italy in 1990. He annoys and insults on many levels, but more importantly, he inspires and shakes up a nation caught in a class struggle and national-identity crisis in the year that represents how strong we can be when we unite behind something. He is our dreams and our repressed unrealized potential, a flaming torch showing kids and adults alike here what it looks like to fight literally out of poverty and earn your way into opportunity and success.

UFC, Bellator Vet Lavar Johnson Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Assaulting Girlfriend

Lavar Johnson will go to prison for brutally assaulting his girlfriend of seven years. According to a report from News 30 , a Fresno County judge sentenced the former UFC, Bellator MMA and Strikeforce heavyweight to five years in prison for a domestic violence incident that occurred on Aug. 11 last year. Johnson reportedly slammed his girlfriend’s head against the wall and ground, kneed her in the face and head repeatedly and hit her more than 11 times with a closed fist. Johnson's attorney claimed that the incident occurred because the former fighter had too much to drink and was angry that his girlfriend was tracking him with a GPS. Johnson had several friends vouch for his character in court, while many others submitted letters on his behalf. “I’m sorry,” Johnson said. “I take full responsibility for my actions.” Still, it wasn’t enough to get the former fighter a lighter sentence, as Johnson was hoping for three years instead of five. Judge Glenda Allen-Hill pointed to Johnson’s history, which includes him serving 30 days in jail and undergoing alcohol counseling for a different domestic violence incident in 2007.

Greg Jackson: Special ‘It’ Factor Sets Yair Rodriguez Apart From Other Fighters

“The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America” Season 1 winner Yair Rodriguez is one of the UFC’s fastest rising stars, and his ascent may have only accelerated last weekend. The Mexican featherweight earned the most impressive victory of his promotional tenure when he knocked out Team Alpha Male product Andre Fili 2:15 into the second round at UFC 197 . Rodriguez’s first finish in the Octagon was punctuated by a spectacular leaping roundhouse kick, a maneuver that will undoubtedly wind up on most “Knockout of the Year” lists by the end of 2016. For his efforts, Rodriguez earned his second post-fight bonus in four UFC outings. Thus far, unorthodox moves like that kick have been his calling card since joining the Las Vegas-based promotion. According to trainer Greg Jackson, being able to balance the spectacular with the fundamental will be crucial as his fighter’s career progresses. “He’s so dynamic and so creative that balancing that creativity with strong basics so that he can go back and forth between those two is really important for his style development,” Jackson said during an appearance on The Sherdog Radio Network’s ”The Neutral Corner” show with Yves Edwards .

Junior dos Santos Undergoes ‘Small Shoulder Surgery’ Following Win Over Rothwell

Greg Jackson: Jon Jones would have beat Daniel Cormier at UFC 197 | UFC Fight News & Videos

“Jon’s one of those guys that fights to the level of his competition,” Jackson said during an appearance on the Sherdog Radio Network’s ”The Neutral Corner” show with Yves Edwards. “When the going gets tough he gets going for sure. I’m very confident he would have won that night because he would step up to that level. He’s one of those guys if you push him really hard he will push back. “For me, we’d done so much work for Daniel, I think he still would have won that night. If you push him hard, that almost wakes him up.” “The night of [UFC 197] I was a little, I wouldn’t say disappointed, but I think we should have opened up more,” Jackson said. “I’m very hard on myself because I feel it’s my responsibility to prepare the fighter the right way. Sometimes people might misinterpret what I feel on the fighter, but it’s actually on myself. I needed to be a little bit more creative on how I prepared him for that. “Outside of those mistakes on my part, I was pretty happy with the performance overall. I think that said, he just loosened up and we’ll be really ready to go for DC once it’s time.

Premier Boxing Champions on Fox ‘Ortiz vs. Berto’ Results & Play-by-Play

Victor Ortiz vs. Andre Berto Round 1 Jack Reiss is the referee for this welterweight main event. They move cautiously around the ring, tossing out jabs from a distance. Neither man has taken the lead a minute in as the feeling out process continues. The crowd is already restless thanks to the terrific brawls that preceded this one. They continue to paw with their jabs, not taking any chances at this point. They come together and there is a clash of heads. Ortiz is cut on his forehead but it doesn’t look too dangerous, though he is bleeding pretty badly. The round ends with almost nothing happening. Too close to call. 10-10 Round 2 Ortiz comes out and pops out several jabs immediately. A nice straight left to the head by the Kansan, but Berto takes it easily. Another nice left upstairs by Ortiz and Berto answers with a flurry. After a brief exchange, they tie each other up. Now they are letting their hands fly, looking to end things right now. Ortiz sticks a few jabs into Andre’s gut, but Berto misses with a counter left hook. Ortiz leaps in with a lead left but it glances off his foe’s head.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Iowa: Pat Miletich

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. For example, reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Robbie Lawler may have been born in San Diego, but few would recognize him as a Californian.
