Preview: UFC 211 ‘Miocic vs. Dos Santos 2’ - Miocic vs. dos Santos

The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday returns to Texas with a card stacked basement-to-rafters with top-notch talent -- so much so that it is difficult to give all of them the attention they deserve. In the main event, heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic defends his title for the second time in a rematch with longtime contender Junior dos Santos , who defeated him in a five-round thriller in 2014. Meanwhile, women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk takes on the hard-hitting Jessica Andrade in a co-main headliner that will surely produce fireworks at the American Airlines Center in Dallas ( online betting ). Filling out the main draw is a trio of potential No. 1 contender fights. Demian Maia looks to add Jorge Masvidal ’s name to his six-fight winning streak and net a shot at Tyron Woodley ’s welterweight belt in the process. Before that, former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar gives blue-chip featherweight prospect Yair Rodriguez the toughest test of his young career, and Henry Cejudo tries to get back on the winning track against a constantly improving Sergio Pettis .

MMA’s Greats of the States | Utah: Jeremy Horn

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. *** MMA observers tend to throw around the term without giving it much thought, but when it comes to Jeremy Horn , “pioneer” certainly fits. One of the best grapplers to ever grace the Ultimate Fighting Championship , he debuted in 1996 and proceeded to rattle off one submission after another, a 34-4-4 start to his career highlighted by his arm-triangle choke on Chuck Liddell at UFC 19 ( online betting ). Horn, who remains active into his 40s, has captured championships in King of the Cage, TKO Major League MMA and various regional organizations.

14
The Bottom Line: Give Joanna a Chance

Joanna Jedrzejczyk will compete for the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s strawweight title for the sixth time at UFC 211 on Saturday in Dallas ( online betting ). Regardless of whether she continues her championship reign, she’ll leave the event still seeking her first pay-per-view main event. Her UFC 211 bout will be her third title co-headliner, along with a title bout that was third from the top, a title bout that main evented on UFC Fight Pass and a title bout that main evented on Fox Sports 1. Paul Buentello , Thales Leites and Joe Soto still lead Jedrzejczyk when it comes to pay-per-view main events. It’s well past time that changes. The UFC is not a charity, and it selects its pay-per-views based on what it thinks will draw. The argument for giving Jedrzejczyk a chance in that position is not that she deserves it, although she does; the argument is that she’s worth investing in and has a good shot at rewarding the UFC for making that effort. It’s not always predictable which fighters will connect with the general public but Jedrzejczyk has so many of the things you look for, and the UFC isn’t exactly so teeming with big names that there are no spots available.

Flyweight Champ Demetrious Johnson Gets Wish, Poses with 10 UFC Belts

It appears as though Demetrious Johnson finally got a belt for each UFC flyweight title defense – at least temporarily. Prior to facing Wilson Reis at UFC on Fox 24, “Mighty Mouse” wondered aloud why he hadn’t received a championship strap for each of his previous nine title defenses. “I’m getting pissed off about that,” Johnson said at UFC on Fox 24 open workouts . “I saw Daniel Cormier get three damn belts, so Dana White, WME-IMG, whoever writes the checks, give me eight damn belts please, and then I [already have one, so] nine if I win this one. I’ll take it home. I’m going to start collecting these belts. Michael Bisping has two belts and I’m just a nice guy, just a company man, I come here and fight and then they take the belt away from me and I'm like, ‘alright, peace. Call me when you want me to come fight again.’ And thats it. But now I'm seeing these guys with three belts, and I'm like, I only got one belt and have to share it with two of my kids.” After Johnson defeated Reis via third-round armbar to tie Anderson Silva for most consecutive title defenses in promotion history, UFC President Dana White vowed to get the pound-for-pound standout a belt for each of those victories.

During a conference call on Tuesday, Bellator MMA President Scott Coker confirmed that the winner of the clash between Rory MacDonald and Paul Daley on May 19 will become the top contender in the welterweight division. “That’s really a [headliner] between two of the best 170-pounders in the world, and [they] will be competing for the No. 1 contender spot in Bellator in the welterweight division,” Coker said. “If you look at our division in the 170-pound weight class, it clearly is one of our strongest divisions and I think it’s probably the strongest welterweight division of any league out there. “You look at the fight between Douglas Lima and Lorenz Larkin in New York. We have other prospects, Michael “Venom” Page, Derek Anderson . We have Paul, we have Rory. But this fight clearly will be for the No. 1 contender’s spot and will fight the winner of Douglas Lima vs.

Dana White’s One Regret Since Starting With The UFC … ‘Those Highly Controversial Homophobic…

“You guys have to understand this, but this is the way I am. I have no regrets. The only thing that I regret is in that video blog when I used the F word. As far as the gay and lesbian community, my comments were not directed toward them. I have no problem with the gay and lesbian community. I’m actually a supporter of many of their issues. Miocic Wants to Avoid Judges in JDS Rematch, Open to Boxing Match vs. Anthony Joshua

When Stipe Miocic fought Junior dos Santos at UFC on Fox 13 in December 2014, it was declared “Fight of the Night.” Extra paycheck aside, it’s something that Miocic has had on his mind ever since. The Cleveland native hasn’t lost since dropping a unanimous decision to dos Santos that night and along the way, he’s scooped up the UFC’s heavyweight championship. Miocic has turned into a wrecking machine since that defeat, finish Mark Hunt , Andrei Arlovski , Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem in succession. He told the media recently that he had learned quite a bit from that loss to dos Santos, which was his first-ever five-round fight. “You always look at [the fight], see all the things I did wrong in the fight,” Miocic said ahead of his rematch with dos Santos at UFC 211 on Saturday. “I did a lot of things wrong with my first five-round fight. So, me and my coaches watched over that film to see what he did well and see what I did wrong, and what I did well, and what he did wrong. And we went over a lot of stuff and definitely have a game plan for my next fight.

Bellator Vet Curtis Millender to Face Kevin Holland in LFA 13 Headliner on June 2

When Legacy Fighting Alliance visits California in June, its 170-pound title picture will become a little clearer. LFA 13 will take place June 2 at the Los Angeles-Burbank Marriott Convention Center in Burbank, Calif., and anchoring the event will be a pivotal welterweight showdown. Curtis Millender , who has won three of his last four bouts, will step into the cage to take on Texan Kevin Holland in the main event, with the winner one step closer to a title shot. Millender is coming off a second-round TKO of Johnny Cisneros in January at Bellator 170. He had dropped three of four at one point in 2015 (two of the losses were in the Bellator cage) but “Curtious” Curtis has turned things around nicely, winning his last two bouts. Holland, meanwhile, has been cleaning house at both 185 and 170 pounds. “Trail Blazer” has won his last five since losing to Rafael Lovato Jr. at Legacy FC 46 nearly two years ago. All five of his wins on his current torrid streak have come via submission or knockout. The LFA 13 co-feature will see Alex Reyes taking on Karen Darabedyan , also at welterweight.

UFC 211 Preview: Is Demian Maia playing with fire? - Fighters Only

The irony of Tyron Woodley questioning the strategy behind Demian Maia’s decision to fight Jorge Masvidal this Saturday (May 13) at UFC 211 won’t be lost on anyone familiar with the Brazilian’s cerebral approach to mixed martial arts. As thoughtful and deliberate as any fighter in the game, Maia thinks two or three moves ahead of the opposition, at least when competing in the Octagon, and isn’t the type to do stuff on a whim, much less with any degree of recklessness. Yet Woodley, the current UFC welterweight champion, can apparently see no logic in Maia’s decision to take a fight with Masvidal when on the cusp of a shot at his belt. It is, he says, the mother of all banana skins, a stylistic nightmare, a fight he apparently cannot win. Dumb.

Paul Daley: Rory MacDonald Quit in Loss to Robbie Lawler at UFC 189

Rory MacDonald has been almost universally praised for his effort in defeat against Robbie Lawler in their classic slugfest at UFC 189 nearly two years ago. In a bout that topped most of 2015’s “Fight of the Year” polls, MacDonald was on the verge of defeating Lawler before a left hand from “Ruthless” shattered his opponent’s already mangled nose 60 seconds into the fifth frame. Heading into the fifth, all three cageside judges had MacDonald up 39-37 on their scorecards, an impressive feat considering that the “Red King” likely had his nose broken in the opening stanza by one of the sport’s hardest hitters. However, Paul Daley , who will face MacDonald in the Bellator 179 headliner on May 19, scoffed when questioned about his opponent’s durability. The British knockout artist pointed to the decisive moment of the fight, when MacDonald crumbled to the canvas in agony before being finished by Lawler moments later. “Didn’t he quit against Robbie Lawler ? I’m pretty sure he quit in that fight. He quit the fight,” Daley said during a conference call on Tuesday.
