Philippou considered quitting MMA before UFC Fight Night 40 win

It was just the kind of win he needed to get his confidence back. After his five-fight streak, he was outpointed by Francis Carmont in a tough fight that saw him grinded out and unable to get anything going. He then booked the main event of UFC Fight Night 35 in January, but for the first time in his career, he was knocked out when Luke Rockhold kicked him in the midsection, then finished him off with his hands.

Brown vs. Silva a timely reminder of why we watch this crazy sport

The original Forrest Griffin - Stephan Bonnar fight went down in UFC history as a sort of contagion that spread across America through the oldest form of conveyance (word of mouth). That was in April 2005, and it was timely for the UFC back then, a promotion that had just completed a time-buy on Spike TV and was in need of a transcendent moment to help carry it forward. That single fight was not only a slobberknocker full of table turning plot twists and tomorrow-less abandon, but it came off like two guys laughing and punching holes in Western civilization. It somehow conveyed for the greater masses the very spirit of the thing that for so long just hadn’t been communicating. Now, I’ve always been hesitant to join the chorus that Bonnar-Griffin alone was the reason for the MMA boom, but it certainly didn’t hurt. What those guys did that night, whether they were aware of it or not, was bring the sport crashing through the barriers of the prevailing PC world, turning the glorious (and mostly sanctioned) underworld right-side up. Cut to May 10, 2014, and we’re at the other end of that night’s opening of the cagefighting floodgates.

By the Numbers: UFC Fight Night ‘Brown vs. Silva’

Matt Brown has finished five straight fights. | Mike Fridley/Sherdog.com A back injury derailed Matt Brown ’s momentum in December, but “The Immortal” recaptured the magic in a big way on Saturday. In one of the most memorable encounters of 2014, Brown stopped a resilient Erick Silva with strikes 2:11 into the third round of their UFC Fight Night “Brown vs. Silva” headliner at the U.S. Bank Arena in Cincinnati. In a deep and talented welterweight class, Brown’s violent tendencies have him ascending the divisional ladder in rapid fashion. While Brown has forcefully inserted himself into the title picture, his performance against Silva also yielded a statistical bounty. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night “Brown vs. Silva,” with statistics courtesy of FightMetric.com : 7: Winning streak for Brown, currently the longest active streak in the UFC’s welterweight division and tied with Chris Weidman and Renan Barao for second longest active streak overall behind Jon Jones (11). 12: Welterweight victories for Brown, tying him with Thiago Alves for No.

College professor attempts to revamp mixed martial arts fight scoring with introduction of points-based system

A couple of years ago, a friend of mine from college came by and talked about something every MMA fan hears about after almost every show. It's something I've heard, literally, since childhood, long before there was a such thing as MMA, except you could substitute boxing for the conversation. It had to do with judging, judges, scoring, ten point-must, and four letter words. You'll have to imagine the actual conversation, but it's pretty easy to know the content. Over the years, my friend would bring it up to me several more times. I'd continually dismiss the notion of it and never think about it again. My friend said how the system has to go. I said it was here to stay. Of course it has its problems, which are much deeper than bad judging, which also exists in some cases. The current system has inherent flaws, the biggest being the inability to differentiate between close rounds and decisive rounds. As someone who scores every single UFC fight as it happens, like a judge when the round is over, with no erasing and changing your mind after the fact allowed, there are fights every few weeks where my scores indicate somebody won who really shouldn't have won.

How Matt Brown's comeback win is the perfect metaphor for an improbable career

This was a Matt Brown fight in every sense. He won it as much with raw toughness as skill. He won it by refusing to acknowledge the fact that he was losing, and also by baiting Silva into a battle of wills that he could not possibly win. Brown may not be the slickest or most naturally talented welterweight in the UFC – he may not even be in the top 10 in either category – but if you try to trade gut shots and brain blasts with the man, you’ll probably discover that he minds the suffering far less than you do.

Danny Castillo: For Mom

It’s not the ideal Mother’s Day for Danny Castillo, but as the UFC lightweight returns home from Brazil, where he competed in a grappling match against Haider Rasheed on Saturday, you get the impression that his mom, Roxana, understands, and that her son will most certainly make it up to her when he arrives back in Northern California. “I think every day should be Mother’s Day,” said Castillo, and that’s not just talk, as “Last Call” has always made a concerted effort to let his mom know how special she is. “She’s my biggest fan. She’s been following me around for years, ever since I was in college wrestling. She would fly to wherever and she’s always been there watching me.” He’s not exaggerating, as Roxana has been there throughout her son’s wrestling career, as well as at 22 of his 23 pro mixed martial arts bouts, with her only miss – his 2009 WEC bout against Phil Cardella – due to back surgery. “I think he needs me there,” said Roxana. “I’ve been there since Day One when he was born, all through his wrestling, and I’ve been everywhere with him. And I need to be there in case anything happens.

http://www.cagepotato.com/ufc-fight-night-40-results-matt-brown-tkos-erick-silva-in-instant-classic-and-other-highlights/

No, really. Matt Brown . If you didn’t see his main-event fight against Erick Silva at UFC Fight Night 40, you have to. You owe it to yourself. Our words can’t really do it justice suffice it to say it was pure violence. The first round saw Silva nearly score a liver-shot KO over Brown and then submit him with a rear naked choke. But after Brown escaped the choke, he managed to reverse his fortunes. He landed some combinations that would put down a horse, but somehow Silva survived the beating throughout the latter half of the first round and the entirety of the second. Finally, in the third frame, Silva succumbed to the force of nature that was Brown. This fight was a breath of fresh, bloody air when MMA needed one.

http://www.cagepotato.com/the-moral-weight-of-being-an-mma-fan/

And how can MMA fans be blamed? The kernel of Dana White ‘s blowhard persuasions about fighting being “in our blood” is true. The highest level of MMA transcends “sport” as we’re used to it. There are no overweight outfielders scratching their balls between innings. There are no fines for wearing your socks the wrong height or for excessive celebration. MMA, at its best, is a phantasmagoric display of violence juxtaposed with art. It’s raw. It’s visceral. It’s a grotesque, screeching cacophony of carnage that unfolds into a single, unparalleled and strangely soothing melody. There is nothing on earth like (good) MMA. Nothing.

UFC Fight Night Results: ‘Brown vs. Silva’ Play-by-Play & Updates

Matt Brown vs. Erick Silva Round 1 Referee Herb Dean is the third man in the cage for tonight’s welterweight main event, with judges Sal D’Amato, Chris Lee and Cardo Urso scoring at cageside. Brown pushes forward on Silva, who tries to fend off the American with oblique kicks. Brown just keeps coming and gets dumped to the ground, but he quickly scrambles back to his feet. Silva drops Brown with a body shot near the fence and then works to pound him out with punches and elbows. Brown hangs in there, so Silva changes tactics and jumps on Brown’s back. Brown tries to walk off the fence while defending a rear-naked choke. Silva gets a tight squeeze on a neck crank, but Brown peels his hands off and scoots back toward the fence. Silva digs his heel into Brown’s gut before Brown twists around and explodes back to his feet. Brown chases a suddenly wobbly Silva across the cage, bombing the Brazilian with punches and then blasting through the Thai plum with knees. Silva is in survival mode, jogging away from Brown, who catches up and foot-sweeps him to the ground. Silva gets up, but Brown is waiting with more heavy hooks and knees.

Dana White on Matt Brown’s next fight: ‘We’re going to give him something big, something fun’

"Yeah, I told him to quit acting like the media, I have been on the road for six weeks. Let me get home and figure it out. There's no doubt that Matt Brown is exciting, but the reason that Brown is not there right now is because he got injured before the fight with Carlos Condit and that was a fight that would have put him right there."

Coach: Erick Silva neither concussed, nor is his jaw fractured after UFC Fight Night 40 loss

"We don’t know what happened, we don’t know if it was the rear-naked choke attempt in the first round," he said. "He’s really good, but something happened. We need to find out what’s the issue. His training camp was perfect, we have no excuses. He was great. He never cut weight that easily."

Second Time’s a Charm: Can Chad Mendes Dethrone Jose Aldo at UFC 176?

The emergence of Mendes’ striking game can make all the difference against Aldo, who looked far too comfortable on the feet in their first meeting. The champion was able to keep Mendes at a distance with his leg kicks, and “Money’s” inability to close that gap and score any offense left him a sitting duck in the striking department. Over his last few fights, Mendes has showed off aggressiveness on the feet that will serve him well against Aldo, who fights best when he’s able to square up and land his brutal kicks. Consistent offensive pressure has always been Mendes’ bread and butter, but he didn’t have the tools to work that game against Aldo the first time out. With his newfound punching power and willingness to engage on the feet, he can try to force Aldo to move backwards, negating the power in Aldo’s strikes and making an attempt at a takedown that much easier.

Once scheduled to fight Jose Aldo, UFC lightweight Erik Koch struggling to recapture winning form

1.  Injuries galore . This isn't a case of just injuries to Koch, but to his opponent as well. On two occasions he was scheduled to fight Cub Swanson in 2011, but neither bout materialized due to Swanson withdrawing because of injuries on both occasions. After beating Brookins, Koch was then slated to face Dustin Poirier at UFC 143, only for Koch to suffer an injury that forced him off the card. In a rather questionable decision, the UFC gave Koch a title shot anyway, but the aforementioned Aldo injury canceled the UFC 149 date and then Koch hurt his knee in preparation for the re-scheduled UFC 153 matchup. By his own account, Koch's knee injury was the same as the one that kept Dan Henderson out of UFC 151 vs. Jon Jones. If you're keeping score, Koch had 5 fights canceled from 2011-2012, and he ended 2012 without fighting once.

Matt Brown should go from forgotten contender to title challenger

It's hard to discount his chances no matter who he is facing. He keeps winning despite being an underdog in three of his last four, including last night. Against Erick Silva, an explosive southpaw with four first-round UFC finishes, Brown was on the ropes early, dropped by a body shot. But it's Matt Brown; overcoming trouble is what he does. It's who he is. He ate some ground strikes, got back to his feet and proceeded to unleash hell as he and Silva combined for the round of the year in MMA. Each man coming forward, giving no quarter, looking to bend the other's will.

UFC Fight Night Cincinnati post-event bonuses: Matt Brown wins $100, 000 for main event thriller

The main event of the evening certainly lived up to all expectations, as both Brown and Silva put on arguably the ‘Fight of the Year' so far in a bout that lasted almost three whole rounds. It was far from a one-sided beatdown though, as Brown was in trouble for the majority of the opening round, before he recovered from a rear-naked choke attempt to unleash a savage beating on his Brazilian adversary.  The Ohio-native had a few more worrisome incidents, but he survived each one to eventually force referee Herb Dean to stop the contest.

In a whirlwind round one, Silva rocked Brown with a big body kick, followed him to the mat, got his back, and nearly put him away with a rear naked choke.
