Preview: UFC 211 ‘Miocic vs. Dos Santos 2’ - Miocic vs. dos Santos

The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Saturday returns to Texas with a card stacked basement-to-rafters with top-notch talent -- so much so that it is difficult to give all of them the attention they deserve. In the main event, heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic defends his title for the second time in a rematch with longtime contender Junior dos Santos , who defeated him in a five-round thriller in 2014. Meanwhile, women’s strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk takes on the hard-hitting Jessica Andrade in a co-main headliner that will surely produce fireworks at the American Airlines Center in Dallas ( online betting ). Filling out the main draw is a trio of potential No. 1 contender fights. Demian Maia looks to add Jorge Masvidal ’s name to his six-fight winning streak and net a shot at Tyron Woodley ’s welterweight belt in the process. Before that, former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar gives blue-chip featherweight prospect Yair Rodriguez the toughest test of his young career, and Henry Cejudo tries to get back on the winning track against a constantly improving Sergio Pettis .

"The Korean Superboy" Doo Ho Choi returns at UFC 214 |

Yesterday afternoon, our own Chris Taylor reported that UFC 214 will be headlined by a light heavyweight title fight between champion Daniel Cormier, and former champion Jon Jones . The co-headliner, meanwhile, is expected to see Cris “Cyborg” Justino fight for featherweight gold , though it is not known if she’ll be fighting for an interim belt or the vacant, undisputed title. With the top end of this card now taking shape, the UFC has begun to construct the rest of the pay-per-view, and the first officially announced bout is a featherweight scrap between red hot South Korean prospect Doo Ho Choi, and Team Alpha Male staple Andre Fili.

Opinion: Weight Cutting Matters

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * As is becoming increasingly common, a high profile fight fell through the week of an Ultimate Fighting Championship pay-per-view card. In this case, UFC 211 lost out on a bout between flyweight contenders Henry Cejudo and Sergio Pettis . On a loaded card where the matchup had received limited hype, it’s not too badly missed, but it did bring up something else. When you heard that fight was off, what did you think was the reason why? At least for me, even before there were whispers of Cejudo looking rough at a media day this week (much less the hand injury that was later cited as the catalyst for him pulling out), my mind went to a very specific place: The weight cut. Ever since the UFC instituted the newer “early weigh-in” procedures a year ago, fighters have missed weight and pulled out of fights a few days out at a higher rate than before. It turns out that the earlier weigh-in (late morning the day before instead of late afternoon to early evening), while designed to allow fighters more time to rehydrate, at least in theory, didn’t work in practice.

‘TUF 25’ Recap: Episode 4

On the strength of Jesse Taylor ’s dominant win over Mehdi Baghdad last week, Team Dillashaw is up 3-0 on the hated Team Garbrandt. The show begins with TUF 15’s James Krause lamenting how he was knocked out by Justin Lawrence in their fight to get into the house. He says he was hit by an illegal knee that turned the tides in the fight and feels as though he wasn’t given a fair deal. Even though he is currently under contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship , he is out to redeem himself for what happened the first time he was on the show. Highlights of Krause tearing up Sam Stout , Daron Cruickshank and Shane Campbell inside the Octagon ensue and he is amped to be fighting at the end of tonight’s show. The following day, Team Dillashaw decides to make a bear card for their coach because it’s his birthday. Tom Gallicchio , Joe Stevenson and others have been shaving off body hair to glue onto the card and it looks amazing. The team is giddy with excitement when they give their masterpiece to the former UFC bantamweight champ and even though he’s grossed-out by the card, he loves it and is laughing wildly.

UFC 211 Statistical Matchup Analysis: Jedrzejczyk vs. Andrade

After a few weeks without any events, the Ultimate Fighting Championship returns with a stacked lineup for UFC 211 on Saturday at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. In the co-main event, the women’s strawweight championship is up for grabs, as defending champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk meets streaking contender Jessica Andrade . The undefeated Jedrzejczyk has been in a class of her own ever since she knocked out inaugural strawweight champion Carla Esparza in 2015. Since then, she has reeled off four consecutive and dominant title defenses while seldom finding herself in any real danger. She was last active in November, when she took a lopsided unanimous decision against Karolina Kowalkiewicz at UFC 205. She is currently the second-most tenured UFC champion, trailing only Demetrious Johnson in the number of title defenses and the length of her reign. On the other side of the cage, Andrade will look to snatch the crown and extend her winning streak to four fights at the same time. After starting off her UFC career 4-3 in the bantamweight division, she dropped to a more natural 115-pound weight class at UFC 199 in 2016.

Miocic Wants to Avoid Judges in JDS Rematch, Open to Boxing Match vs. Anthony Joshua

When Stipe Miocic fought Junior dos Santos at UFC on Fox 13 in December 2014, it was declared “Fight of the Night.” Extra paycheck aside, it’s something that Miocic has had on his mind ever since. The Cleveland native hasn’t lost since dropping a unanimous decision to dos Santos that night and along the way, he’s scooped up the UFC’s heavyweight championship. Miocic has turned into a wrecking machine since that defeat, finish Mark Hunt , Andrei Arlovski , Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem in succession. He told the media recently that he had learned quite a bit from that loss to dos Santos, which was his first-ever five-round fight. “You always look at [the fight], see all the things I did wrong in the fight,” Miocic said ahead of his rematch with dos Santos at UFC 211 on Saturday. “I did a lot of things wrong with my first five-round fight. So, me and my coaches watched over that film to see what he did well and see what I did wrong, and what I did well, and what he did wrong. And we went over a lot of stuff and definitely have a game plan for my next fight.

Bellator Vet Curtis Millender to Face Kevin Holland in LFA 13 Headliner on June 2

When Legacy Fighting Alliance visits California in June, its 170-pound title picture will become a little clearer. LFA 13 will take place June 2 at the Los Angeles-Burbank Marriott Convention Center in Burbank, Calif., and anchoring the event will be a pivotal welterweight showdown. Curtis Millender , who has won three of his last four bouts, will step into the cage to take on Texan Kevin Holland in the main event, with the winner one step closer to a title shot. Millender is coming off a second-round TKO of Johnny Cisneros in January at Bellator 170. He had dropped three of four at one point in 2015 (two of the losses were in the Bellator cage) but “Curtious” Curtis has turned things around nicely, winning his last two bouts. Holland, meanwhile, has been cleaning house at both 185 and 170 pounds. “Trail Blazer” has won his last five since losing to Rafael Lovato Jr. at Legacy FC 46 nearly two years ago. All five of his wins on his current torrid streak have come via submission or knockout. The LFA 13 co-feature will see Alex Reyes taking on Karen Darabedyan , also at welterweight.

Demian Maia cleaned his mind of title shot talk ahead of UFC 211 bout with Jorge Masvidal

“Of course I want to fight for the title first, but once we signed for the fight, I cleaned my mind,” Maia told MMAjunkie. “I said, ‘Let’s go and do what I love, which is fighting.’ I’m very blessed to do that, to do what I love and to go every day to the gym and make my living with that. Flyweight Champ Demetrious Johnson Gets Wish, Poses with 10 UFC Belts

It appears as though Demetrious Johnson finally got a belt for each UFC flyweight title defense – at least temporarily. Prior to facing Wilson Reis at UFC on Fox 24, “Mighty Mouse” wondered aloud why he hadn’t received a championship strap for each of his previous nine title defenses. “I’m getting pissed off about that,” Johnson said at UFC on Fox 24 open workouts . “I saw Daniel Cormier get three damn belts, so Dana White, WME-IMG, whoever writes the checks, give me eight damn belts please, and then I [already have one, so] nine if I win this one. I’ll take it home. I’m going to start collecting these belts. Michael Bisping has two belts and I’m just a nice guy, just a company man, I come here and fight and then they take the belt away from me and I'm like, ‘alright, peace. Call me when you want me to come fight again.’ And thats it. But now I'm seeing these guys with three belts, and I'm like, I only got one belt and have to share it with two of my kids.” After Johnson defeated Reis via third-round armbar to tie Anderson Silva for most consecutive title defenses in promotion history, UFC President Dana White vowed to get the pound-for-pound standout a belt for each of those victories.

UFC Strawweight Jessica Penne Flagged by USADA Upon Analysis of ‘Biological Passport’

Jessica Penne has been flagged by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency upon review of her biological passport — a first for an athlete within the UFC. Penne initially submitted a negative sample in an out-of-competition drug test administered on March 20. However, Penne was flagged following a re-analysis of the sample. “Penne’s sample, having undergone the standard out-competition analysis menu, was initially reported to USADA as negative. However, upon review of Penne’s Athlete Biological Passport, the sample was subsequently flagged for additional analysis due to an increased degree of variability in urinary biomarkers measured in the sample,” the statement read. “As a result of that further analysis, the presence of a prohibited substance was detected. Before the reanalysis was completed, Penne fought at the UFC Fight Night event in Nashville on April 22, 2017.” Penne dropped a unanimous decision to Danielle Taylor at UFC Fight Night 108 , her third consecutive defeat within the Las Vegas-based promotion. The event took place under the jurisdiction of the Tennessee Athletic Commission, and USADA will make sure the commission has all the necessary information to determine an appropriate punishment regarding Penne’s case.
