USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie rankings, May 13: Matt Brown makes big leap

To the best of our ability, fighters will be ranked in their primary weight class. Catchweight fights and bouts outside the fighter's primary weight class can have a positive or negative impact on the ranking. However, fighters can be ranked in only one weight class at a given time, and in most cases, they won't be ranked in a new weight class until they've had their first fight at that weight.

From Legend to Punchline: The Rise and Fall of Tito Ortiz

Tito Ortiz will make his Bellator debut on May 17. | Photo: Dave Mandel/ One legend is currently a television pitchman delivering punchlines. The other legend is disdainfully looked upon by hardcore MMA fans as a punchline. They are Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz . Mention those names in the same sentence to old-school mixed martial arts fans, and they probably have a good memory of UFC 47. Remember that pay-per-view? It sold 100,000 buys. Their rematch a couple of years later sold one million PPV buys. It is no wonder that Viacom executives with fond memories of promoting past Ultimate Fighting Championship events would jump at the chance to build Bellator MMA ’s PPV launch around someone like Ortiz. They booked him in a fight against Quinton Jackson in November and even carried over the promotion of the bout to the TNA pro-wrestling property on Spike TV. Unfortunately, right on cue, Ortiz was forced to back out of the match with an injury, and the pay-per-view became a Spike TV special instead. Now, Ortiz is back for Bellator’s do-over PPV launch, this time facing the difficult challenge of confronting the predatory fighting style of middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko .

Matt Brown: 'I was leaving my face open to get punched'

To return to the image of Matt Brown, family man, just out cutting his grass on a Sunday afternoon after delivering a Fight of the Year candidate. Brown said his family did not treat him any different after his win over Silva in Cincinnati. Even if they had, there's a good chance that Brown would have thanked them for the praise and then went about his chores. "I lost four out of five a few years ago, so I know what it's like to be at the rock bottom in the UFC," said Brown. "So, I know who was there for me when I was down, I know what that life feels like. All this, I take it in stride and maintain my humility throughout, and I'm not going to let it get to my head."

King Mo; "I'm Sick and Tired of All the Talk, Let's Do This." –...

Highly passionate MMA Journalist, and I've followed the sport ever since my favorite fighter, Vitor Belfort won the heavyweight tournament at UFC 12. After that I've tried to go to every local MMA event around the Gulf Coast and surrounding areas and decided to make it a point to have a career in some aspect in the fighting sport other than fighting in general (didn't want to ruin my face). I'm currently enrolled at Southeastern Louisiana University working towards a degree in Communication. I cover MMA, Boxing and Football for The Daily Star newspaper in my hometown of Hammond, Louisiana, in addition to working as a promotional writer for a local Boxing promotion known as BoxnCar and I cover boxing for however is my home. My main goal is to bring more publicity to MMA in my area and to the sport as a whole as all of us involved with the sport are merely scratching the surface and laying the foundation of what mixed martial arts competition will be further down the road.

UFC Fight Night Cincinnati Judo Chop: Matt Brown's Stunning Muay Thai

It was a glorious way to cap off a great night of organized violence. As fantastic as this fight was for those of you who watched on TV, it was incomparably better live. I was lucky enough to enjoy this career-defining performance from Brown, and I can tell you that, more than anything else, this fight told us about the sheer force of will that makes his style so effective. Sitting in the stands, we didn't even notice that Silva hurt Brown several more times after the knockdown in the first round. It didn't seem to any of us like a back-and-forth fight. This fight was a Matt Brown fight all the way, and that's because, no matter what Erick Silva threw, it wasn't enough to stop Matt Brown's aggression. True to his name, Matt Brown gave off an aura of sheer invulnerability.

Chris Holdsworth: 'Everyone wanted to be on Ronda's team' on TUF 18

"It's funny, we had a little talk beforehand and everybody's like 'I hope we're on Ronda's team' and right after we had that talk, Miesha came up to me, her and Bryan (Caraway) came up to me and talked for about 10 minutes and I got to know her and I got to know Bryan because before I would hear things about them, but once I got to talk to them I kind of got a different opinion on them, and got more comfortable if they did pick me. I was happy where I ended up," Holdsworth said.

Dana White explains Andrei Arlovski's return and why Tim Sylvia won't be back

While Arlovski has had a decent last two years, fellow former champ Tim Sylvia has not. Despite that, the UFC's first event in Sylvia's home state during the summer led him to once again campaign for a slot back in the organization where he had the most success. Apparently that won't be the case though, as Sylvia actually admitted that Dana White has blocked him on Twitter.

MMA Bill Passes New York State Senate, Heads to State Assembly for Fifth Straight Year

The New York State Senate on Tuesday passed a bill to regulate mixed martial arts in the Empire State for the fifth consecutive year. Bill S6502 passed by a vote of 43-17, with one senator excusing himself from the vote. The bill will now head to the State Assembly, where it has died in each of the last four years after State Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver declined to bring the bill forward for a vote. Last year, Connecticut became the 49th state to legalize MMA, leaving New York as the only state in which the sport is banned. The Ultimate Fighting Championship has lobbied for regulation in New York for several years, recruiting some of its best-known talent to speak out in favor of regulation in the state, including light heavyweight champion and native New Yorker Jon Jones , as well as bantamweight queen Ronda Rousey . However, those efforts have thus far not yielded the organization’s desired result. The UFC held its first and only event in New York years prior to Zuffa acquiring the promotion from Semaphore Entertainment Group, when UFC 7 took place at Memorial Auditorium in Buffalo in September 1995.
