Raquel Pennington Breaks Her Silence On Coach's Decision To Not Stop The Fight - MMA Imports

“I agreed with my coaches as soon as the fight was done. I agreed with them in that moment, because at the end of the day the ball is in my court. I could have easily waived off the fight. I could have easily sat down and tapped out. But, I chose not to. I chose to pull my head out of my ass basically, and not give up on myself. Because at the end of the day would you give up? It’s a whole different ball game there. Quitting is not an option, in that aspect.”

Matches to Make After UFC 224

Pooled blood on the canvas told the story: The Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight title was going nowhere. Amanda Nunes retained the 135-pound crown with yet another one-sided performance, as she disposed of Raquel Pennington with punches in the fifth round of their UFC 224 main event on Saturday at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Her nose mangled by an earlier knee strike from the clinch, Pennington succumbed to blows 2:36 into Round 5. It was as if the Octagon had become a crime scene, lacking only the yellow tape. Nunes was in complete control for most of the fight, slowly walking her game but outmatched challenger into a trap from which there was no escape. According to FightMetric data, the champion nearly doubled Pennington in terms of significant strikes, 124-64, answered a takedown with three of her own and outperformed “The Ultimate Fighter 18” semifinalist in the following categories: head strikes (72-49), body strikes (31-10), leg strikes (21-5), strikes from distance (96-56), clinch strikes (15-7) and ground strikes (13-1).

MMA Would Miss Michael Bisping

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Say what you will about Michael Bisping , but the sport of mixed martial arts would certainly lose one of its gamest fighters if his hints become reality and he decides to retire . Even when he loses, “The Count” finds a way to come back and win over fans. The 39-year-old winner of Season 3 of “The Ultimate Fighter” began his career in 2004 and enjoyed a string of victories before suffering his first loss in a split decision to Rashad Evans at UFC 78. As the sport grew in popularity, Bisping never let his setbacks interfere with his thirst to compete. Perhaps that’s why his considering retirement shakes some of us. With that said, no one wants to see fighters hang around longer than they should. Many fighters are afforded opportunities to avenge their losses, but few excel at it the way Bisping has throughout his career.

#Forever I am extremely proud of my lady. You are a warrior babe. Fought every second you possibly could. You continue to amaze me daily. You motivate me to work hard and one day too receive the same opportunity to fight for a UFC championship. We are the 1%ers. Very few will ever know what we go thru as fighters and an even smaller percentage will ever earn the chance to fight on such a big stage and for a world title. #RideOrDie #AlwaysProud PS: Both us and our coaches agree with the decision made to go into the 5th round. We know Raquel more than anyone else and know if we let her give up on herself going into the last round she would have always regretted it. She fought with heart and grit until the end. UFC 139 Shogun Rua vs. Dan Henderson Next UFC Hall of Fame Fight | MMAWeekly.com

“The first fight between Dan Henderson and Shogun Rua is one of the best fights I’ve ever seen,” UFC President Dana White said. “This fight represents everything that’s great about UFC and the sport of mixed martial arts. Dan came out dropping bombs and took control of the first three rounds, while Shogun was able to absorb a ton of punishment, win the fourth and push the fight to the brink in the fifth. This fight was so good that it was named the 2011 Fight of the Year and is still considered one of the top five fights in UFC history.  Congratulations to Dan Henderson and Shogun Rua on a fight that will forever be considered one of the greatest of all-time!”

Trading Shots: Did Raquel Pennington's coaches fail her in UFC 224 main event?

Is forcibly dehydrating yourself different than getting punched in the face? Absolutely. But the point is that coaches make fighters do what they don’t want to do. Pennington’s corner knows her better than you do. Maybe she’s said “I’m done” during sparring or fights before this. Perhaps her coaches thought that she’d regret quitting in a title fight more than she’d regret going out for that fifth round. Is that really such an egregious mistake?

Amanda Nunes: It’s ‘Sad’ That Coaches Made Pennington Continue in Fifth Round at UFC 224

Amanda Nunes gradually inflicted more and more damage on Raquel Pennington as their UFC 224 headlining bout progressed, so much so that Pennington didn’t want to continue after the fourth round. In her corner before the final frame, Pennington told her coaches that she was “done.” However, her team urged her to continue, telling the bantamweight “we’ll recover later.” Pennington didn’t have much to offer Nunes in round five, as her nose appeared to be broken and was bleeding profusely. The Brazilian champion finished off her victory with a barrage of ground-and-pound. Pennington, who was gushing blood, could only cover up until referee Marc Goddard stepped in to wave off the fight at the 2:36 mark of round five. Nunes wasn’t aware of the exchange between Pennington and her corner until after the fight. “It’s sad. Nina [Ansaroff] told me in the locker room. I didn’t even know,” Nunes said at the post-fight press conference. “It’s sad because you could avoid something. She went to the hospital. It might be a bad injury for her to go to the hospital.

UFC 224 Prelims: Cezar Ferreira Chokes Karl Roberson Unconscious in Rio de Janeiro

Cezar Ferreira put Karl Roberson to sleep pic.twitter.com/wIsvv4SSsd — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) May 13, 2018 Karl Roberson woke up looking at the lights, likely with little recollection of how he got there. The previously unbeaten Roberson was choked unconscious by a first-round arm-triangle choke from “The Ultimate Fighter Brazil” winner Cezar Ferreira in the featured UFC 224 prelim on Saturday at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Ferreira (13-6, 9-4 UFC) closed the deal 4:45 into Round 1 and continued his ascent in the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s middleweight division. Roberson (6-1, 1-1 UFC) fought to stay upright but nevertheless conceded two takedowns. Ferreira transitioned to mount with roughly a minute remaining in the first round, applied his ground-and-pound and shifted his attention to the choke. Roberson went limp in a matter of seconds. On the Rise: Chile Edition

The UFC’s first event in Santiago, Chile this weekend offers an exciting fight card filled with emerging talent and capped by a crucial matchup in the welterweight division pitting Demian Maia against Kamaru Usman . With 13 fights packed with explosive potential, the fans that pack the Movistar Arena on Saturday, May 19 should be treated to a terrific night of action inside the Octagon and, as an added bonus, they’ll get a chance to familiarize themselves with a crop of up-and-coming competitors. Here’s a closer look at three of those athletes. This is On the Rise: Santiago Edition. Diego Rivas You best believe that the roof of the Movistar Arena is going to come off when Rivas makes the walk to the cage for his bout with Guido Cannetti . A native of Cholchol, Chile, the 26-year-old bantamweight is the lone native son competing on Saturday’s fight card, and while there will likely be plenty of vocal support in the building for the various other South American fighters on the card, the volume should be at its apex when Rivas’ music hits.
