What does Stipe Miocic think of ending Cleveland's 'championship curse' at UFC 198?

“You know, I didn’t believe I carried the weight (of changing Cleveland’s fortunes),” Miocic told MMAjunkie. “I was going to go out there and do my job. Fabricio is a super tough guy; he was the champion for a reason. Tonight on (ESPN’s sports documentary series) ’30 for 30′ they had ‘Believeland.’ It was a documentary about how Cleveland sports don’t win championships. I put an end to it. I had to stop the curse for us and it went well tonight.”

UFC 198 Results: ‘Werdum vs. Miocic’ Play-by-Play & Updates

UFC Heavyweight Title Fight: Fabricio Werdum vs. Stipe Miocic Round 1 Referee Dan Miragliotta is the third man in the cage for tonight’s heavyweight title fight, with judges Joseph Terrell, Otto Torreiro and Glenn Trowbridge scoring the bout at cageside. The crowd launches into a chant of “uh, vai morrer” before the bout even begins. Werdum gets to work with kicks early, pushing at Miocic’s body and chopping at his legs, in between trying to grab hold of the challenger. Miocic gives the champ a few solid low kicks in return, then steps backward as Werdum turns his head with a straight right hand. Werdum still can’t get any purchase on his clinch or takedown attempts, and now Miocic lands a right hand down the middle. Miocic presses the action at the middle of the round; Werdum tries to reverse the momentum by pressing forward with a flurry of punches, but he walks into a counter right hand. Werdum won’t be slowed and charges forward again on unsteady legs. Miocic backpedals and avoids the punches, then plunks “Vai Cavalo” with a perfectly placed right hook counter. Werdum never sees the punch coming, and when it lands square on his jaw, the Brazilian hits the ground in a heap.

Matches to Make After UFC 198

Fabricio Werdum now has firsthand knowledge of the volatile nature of the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight crown. Werdum in his first defense of the title was on the receiving end of a violent one-punch knockout from Stipe Miocic in the UFC 198 headliner on Saturday at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil. It concluded 2:47 into round one, with an unconscious Werdum coming to rest at the base of the cage. No man has successfully defended the heavyweight championship more than twice in the 23-year history of the UFC. Miocic was the beneficiary of an overzealous champion. After fighting at a measured pace at the start, Werdum, for reasons known only to him, charged at the Strong Style Fight Team standout and walked into a counter right hook from the backpedaling challenger. The concussive impact of the blow immediately separated Werdum from his senses and quieted a stunned crowd of more than 40,000, a vast majority of them staunch “Vai Cavalo” supporters. In a flash, albeit a brilliant one, Werdum’s reign atop the division was over.

Cris ‘Cyborg’ Interested in Invicta Title Defense, Catch-Weight Fights in UFC

Cristiane Justino ’s impressive Octagon debut is sure to give the armchair matchmakers plenty to discuss in the coming weeks. However, the most appealing UFC matchups for “Cyborg” -- namely, Ronda Rousey , Miesha Tate and Holly Holm -- are all in the bantamweight division, and based on her comments Saturday night, it doesn’t appear that the Brazilian is interested in trying to make the cut to 135 pounds. Justino overwhelmed Leslie Smith in a 140-pound catch-weight bout at UFC 198 in Curitiba, Brazil, winning via technical knockout just 1:21 into the opening stanza. A four-punch combination from the Chute Boxe representative put Smith on the canvas, and some follow-up ground-and-pound clinched the victory for the Invicta FC 145-pound queen. “It was an opportunity to show a lot of fans that never knew, who didn’t know who Cyborg was. I was very emotional. I was walking in slow. When I saw everyone screaming I started to run. I wanted to cry. But I told myself, ‘I can’t cry. I’ve got to go fight.’ The crowd strengthened me a lot,” Justino said at the post-fight press conference.

‘Jacare’ Expects Title Shot Following Lopsided Win Over Vitor Belfort at UFC 198

After a brief hiccup against Yoel Romero this past December, Ronaldo Souza appears to have clear sailing toward a middleweight title shot following his first-round finish of Vitor Belfort in the UFC 198 co-headliner on Saturday night. “Jacare” was in complete control from the outset, as he grounded his opponent and opened up a cut on the bridge of Belfort’s nose in the early going. “The Phenom” would eventually return to his feet, but rather than trade with his countryman, he elected to pull guard instead. That proved to be a serious miscalculation, and Souza capitalized by advancing to full mount and pounding out his adversary for a stoppage 4:38 into the opening frame. “That was the plan, to totally dominate Belfort,” Souza told Fox Sports 1. “I was quite surprised because he was a little bit slow. I could see his every movement, so I was a little bit surprised by that.” Souza has won nine of his last 10 fights, with his only setback being the contentious split-decision defeat to Romero at UFC 194. It’s a resume that certainly puts him at the center of any title discussion.

‘Minotauro’ Nogueira to be Enshrined in UFC Hall of Fame

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship interim and Pride Fighting Championships heavyweight champion Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira will be inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame during a ceremony on Sunday, July 10 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The news was revealed in an announcement during Saturday’s UFC 198 pay-per-view in Curitiba, Brazil. Nogueira, 34-10 (5-6 UFC), will go down in history as one of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu heavyweights to compete in mixed martial arts from his era, and was the anchor of Pride’s early heavyweight MMA dominance before the arrival of Fedor Emelianenko . The Bahia, Brazil, native notched wins against Fabricio Werdum , Josh Barnett , Mirko Filipovic , as well as fellow UFC hall of famers Randy Couture and Mark Coleman in his storied career. “I’m really excited to announce Minotauro Nogueira as the first inductee of the 2016 UFC Hall of Fame class,” said UFC President Dana White . “Big Nog is a mixed martial arts legend and, as an icon of the sport, we couldn’t think of a more fitting platform to make this announcement then at the record-breaking stadium event in Brazil.

UFC 198 Bonuses: Miocic, ‘Jacare,’ Trinaldo, Medeiros Take Home $50K

Stipe Miocic has a $50,000 bonus check to go along with his shiny new heavyweight belt. The Ohioan claimed “Performance of the Night” honors for his first-round knockout of Fabricio Werdum in the UFC 198 headliner in Curitiba, Brazil, on Saturday night. Miocic caught Werdum rushing forward and knocked the Brazilian out cold with counter right hook 2:47 into the opening round of their championship bout, giving the Strong Style Fight Team representative his sixth win in his last seven Octagon appearances. Ronaldo Souza earned the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for his opening-round TKO stoppage of Vitor Belfort in the co-main event. “Jacare” set the tone for the rout by taking Belfort down and opening a cut across the bridge of his nose with a series of elbows. “The Phenom” later returned to his feet and attempted to pull guard against Souza, which allowed the Strikeforce veteran to move to full mount and stop the contest with ground-and-pound 4:38 into round one. Meanwhile, Francisco Trinaldo and Yancy Medeiros earned $50,000 apiece and “Fight of the Night” for their lightweight duel.

UFC 198 Prelims: Demian Maia Rear-Naked Choke Submits Matt Brown

Demian Maia will sleep well. The 2007 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist submitted Matt Brown with a third-round rear-naked choke before 45,000 of his rowdy countrymen at UFC 198 “Werdum vs. Miocic” on Saturday at Arena da Baixada in Curitiba, Brazil. Brown (20-14, 13-8 UFC) conceded defeat 4:31 into round three. Maia (23-6, 17-6 UFC) was in control from start to finish. He routinely closed the distance, pressed Brown against the fence and secured one takedown after another. Maia advanced to the back in all three rounds, slowly chipping away at “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 7 graduate’s resolve. Late in the third round, Maia again positioned himself on Brown’s back, snaked his arms into position and squeezed the Xenia, Ohio, native into submission. The victory, Maia’s fifth in a row, moves him into sole possession of fourth place on the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s career wins list. Only Georges St. Pierre (19), Matt Hughes (18) and Michael Bisping (18) have more. Thoughts & Shots From UFC 198, Bellator 154

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. MMA fans had a full plate of combat sports action on Saturday, with UFC 198 and Bellator 154 popping off on the same night. The main course was the heavyweight championship fight between Fabricio Werdum and Stipe Miocic , while there were plenty of appetizers from which to choose across the rest of the two cards. My small plate of choice had to be Cristiane Justino ’s debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship in front of her countrymen in Curitiba, Brazil, but I wouldn’t argue if you liked the Phil Davis - Muhammed Lawal scrap that headlined the Bellator bill. Werdum, Out Go The Lights I was about 100 percent certain Werdum was going to coast to a win over an always game Miocic, right up until I saw him walk out to the cage before 45,000 screaming Brazilians. He looked like one of those people who hire Bruce Buffer to announce their arrival at their wedding reception.

Why Demian Maia deserves the next UFC welterweight title-shot

If the 38 year-old doesn't get a title-shot, now, when he's got the most impressive win-streak of any contender at welterweight, when would he? Maia appears to be getting better with each fight, but he doesn't have forever, at his age, for one more chance at gold.

The Walkmen: UFC 198 ‘Werdum vs. Miocic’

UFC 198 on Saturday was a landmark event for the Ultimate Fighting Championship and featured some of the most prominent names in MMA history competing under the same roof. The show was anchored by Stipe Miocic ’s crushing knockout against Fabricio Werdum , as he captured the UFC heavyweight title in front of 45,000 fans in Curitiba, Brazil. The card featured an assortment of entrance music. Former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo Souza went with Fabolous’ vastly popular “It’s My Time” before he tore apart Vitor Belfort , who chose Jorge Quintero’s “300 Violins” ahead of their co-headliner. Miocic was brought to the cage by “Till I Die” from Machine Gun Kelly, and though nothing went according to plan for Leslie Smith in her clash with Cristiane Justino , she pulled out a classic for her walkout: “Break on Through (to the Other Side)” from The Doors. There were other highlights on the musical side. Francisco Trinaldo entered to Roy Jones Jr. ( “Can’t Be Touched” ), while Sergio Moraes went with Pharrell Williams ( “Happy” ) and Renato Carneiro represented Bob Marley ( “Cry To Me” ).

Boxing: Positive Test Nixes Alexander Povetkin-Deontay Wilder Showdown in Moscow

The performance-enhancing drug Meldonium was introduced to the American lexicon of PEDs when it was reported that Alexander Povetkin had tested positive for the banned substance in April. The positive test has now resulted in the cancellation of Povetkin’s scheduled fight with WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder on May 21 in Moscow. Though not known here in the United States, Meldonium seems to be quite popular among Russian athletes. Tennis star Maria Sharapova admitted in March that she tested positive for the drug, and a number of other Russian combat-sport athletes, like Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight Islam Makhachev , have tested positive for Meldonium. The World Anti-Doping Agency placed Meldonium on the banned list in September and placed it on the prohibited list on Jan. 1, “because of evidence of its use by athletes with the intention of enhancing performance.” Meldonium is defined as an anti-ischemic drug used to treat blood flow. It is not approved in the United States, though it is apparently very popular -- and available -- in Russian, Armenia, Belarus, Moldova and Ukraine.

The 2016 BJJ British Open wrap up by @luca

Here I go wrapping up the 2016 BJJ British Open coverage and packing to go back home. It was a great experience to cover a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament again after a few years. At the same time that it was an awesome warm-up for the worlds, it was a great event for itself with over 1650 athletes competing for two days. This time I didn't focus too much in the information that is so important for a coverage, such as who were the champions and how were the matches. It was more about the visual aspect of the tournament. I tested a new camera (the crazily good Nikon D5), five different lenses, and nearly fifty different setups. On Saturday we also escaped to a nearby place where I tested a very cool lighting setup with Braulio Estima for a future article to be published in Gracie Magazine. Unfortunately I will have to wait for the issue came out before I can release these photos here at Gallerr. I hope you guys liked. Congrats to the absolute winners on all belts, and to the organizers who were able to finish such a crowded event in a very smooth way. #BrazilianJiuJitsu #2016BJJBri

In the night’s main event, heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum made the first defense of his title against hard-charging contender Stipe Miocic. The 38-year-old Werdum had not lost since rejoining the promotion following the Strikeforce closure. The Brazilian earned an interim belt by stopping Mark Hunt at UFC 180 and then unified the belt by submitting Cain Velasquez at UFC 188. Miocic, meanwhile, entered the title affair having won five of his last six. The wrestling stalwart stopped the aforementioned Hunt, as well as former champion Andrei Arlovski, in his last two outings.

44 Matt Brown approaches every fight like it's his last day on Earth

"Maia's a tough son of a (expletive) with every bit of a chance to beat my ass as much as I'm going to beat his. The problem is he just hasn't put in the work that I have. There's no possible way that he has," Brown said. "He doesn't have the drive, the motivation, the energy, the desire that I have. The only thing that he has is jiu-jitsu. That's literally the only thing that he has over me and I do know that he has that over me. I just have to beat that game and I've been training to beat that game and I know how to beat that game.
