Beating the Odds: UFC 211
David
Branch made up for lost time, even if his return to the
Ultimate Fighting Championship was not as aesthetically
pleasing as he had hoped.
The former two-division
World Series of Fighting champion eked out a split decision
over
American Top Team ’s Krzysztof
Jotko in a three-round middleweight showcase at
UFC 211 “Miocic vs. Dos Santos 2” on Saturday at the American
Airlines Center in Dallas. A +145 underdog according to BetDSI.com,
Branch was awarded 29-28 marks from judges Aladin Martinez and Jeff
Mullen.
The loss snapped a five-fight winning streak for Jotko (-175), who
entered the cage on the strength of consecutive victories over
Tor
Troeng , Scott
Askham , Bradley
Scott , Tamdan
McCrory and Thales
Leites . Branch executed a pair of takedowns, grinded away in
the clinch and outstruck the Pole in all three rounds. The
35-year-old Renzo Gracie
protégé had not fought in the UFC in 2,263 days.
“It feels good to be back in the UFC, but I wasn’t satisfied with
my performance,” Branch said. “I would have liked to connect more
with him. He was an awkward lefty, [and] he was a lot harder to

UFC 211 Prelims: Illegal Eddie Alvarez Knees Result in No-Contest with Dustin Porier
Rewatch what happened at the end of Eddie
Alvarez vs. Dustin Poirier #UFC211 https://t.co/st9wBPfYUh
— FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) May 14,
2017
A wildly anticipated showdown between two of the
Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s premier lightweights concluded
in anticlimactic fashion.
Eddie
Alvarez landed two illegal knees -- referee Herb Dean
declared the fouls inadvertent -- in the second round of their
featured prelim at
UFC 211 “Miocic vs. Dos Santos 2” on Saturday at the American
Airlines Center in Dallas. The end came 4:12 into Round 2, much to
the chagrin of those in attendance.
Poirier (21-5) was surgical in his approach, lighting into the
Philadelphia native with leg kicks, body kicks and straight left
hands throughout the first round. Alvarez (28-5) seemed to wake up
on the second, though it took a near-finish to do the trick.
Poirier had him reeling with punches and closed in for a potential
stoppage. Wounded and stunned, Alvarez refused to go away. He
fought back from the brink, rocked Poirier with a right hand,
secured a takedown and trapped him along the fence.

Opinion: The Appeal of Relevance
Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those
of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of
Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company,
Evolve Media.
* * *
The
Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s fourth pay-per-view event of
2017 was without question its best yet. The prelims were mostly
exciting, resulting in a rare “Fight of the Night” bonus going to
an undercard bout, and the main card was composed entirely of
fights relevant to the top of their respective divisions -- an
increasingly noteworthy occurrence in this WMG-IME era of
ownership. Compare that to any of the previous events, each of
which with one or two meaningful fights per main card, and the
matchmaking behind
UFC 211 becomes a legitimate achievement.
It’s hard to overstate the importance of relevance. To some extent,
fans will always show up for gimmicks, like the now thankfully
scrapped Georges St.
Pierre - Michael
Bisping “super fight” or to see CM Punk
catch a beatdown against anyone on the roster, but the best-case
scenario for that type of matchmaking is one-off success.

Bellator 179 Primer: Striking While the Iron’s Hot
When 90,000 people packed the famous Wembley Stadium in London at
the end of April, it was a real changing-of-the-guard moment for
the fight game. Not only did rising megastar Anthony Joshua defeat
longtime heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko to establish
himself as the hottest property in the sport of boxing, but he also
put his home city back on the combat sports map.
That fight proved that big pay-per-view events can happen in the
United Kingdom, all while drawing huge crowds and capturing the
imagination of not only the locals but fans all around the
globe.
Bellator 179 on Friday comes on the heels of the
Klitschko-Joshua sellout in the same city. The event takes place at
Wembley Stadium’s neighboring SSE Arena in London and touches down
at a perfect time for the ravenous combat sports fans in the area.
Bellator
MMA will strike while the iron is hot, doing so with a card
full of local and international talent.
Two top-flight welterweights take the stage on the main event, as
Rory
MacDonald takes on Paul Daley in
a showdown between former
Ultimate Fighting Championship competitors.

The Bottom Line: Promise Fulfilled
It’s predictable that most top-shelf MMA events are going to end up
being exciting. This has been borne out time and time again over
the past decade and a half. The sport’s entertainment value is one
of its greatest attributes, and the top MMA organizations have
largely opted for fan-pleasing styles in the way they promote.
However, what’s unpredictable is which cards will be the standouts
and which ones will disappoint. The wildness of the sport and the
number of anticipated fights on each show means it’s harder to
select which events on the calendar will thrill and which will
sputter.
Take UFC 199 and UFC 200 as examples. UFC 200 was the blowout
event, stacked from top to bottom with intriguing contests.
Unfortunately, a great many of those fights didn’t deliver in the
way that was expected. Fight cancellations didn’t help matters, but
the final lineup still looked strong and the action was lacking.
Meanwhile, UFC 199 looked like just another show but turned out to
be one of the most exciting cards of the entire calendar year
thanks to stunning and emphatic upsets by Michael
Bisping and Dan
Henderson , plus a completely unforeseen war between Marco Polo
Reyes and Dong Hyun
Kim .

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Heavyweight
Heavyweight
1. Stipe
Miocic (17-2)
The top of the heavyweight division is a position inherently
intertwined with volatility in this sport, but in his second UFC
heavyweight title defense, Miocic managed to avenge his last career
loss against Junior dos Santos and do it in brilliant fashion. He
needed less than half of a round to knock “Cigano” unconscious with
punches at UFC 211 and atone for his December 2014 unanimous
decision defeat. Miocic's win gives him two consecutive UFC
heavyweight title defenses -- tied for the most in promotional
history -- but more importantly, his win over dos Santos gives him
yet another knockout over a legendary heavyweight.
2. Fabricio
Werdum (21-6-1)
If Werdum had his druthers and could choose a loss to avenge, it
stands to reason that the former UFC heavyweight champion would
want to rematch the man who took his title and humiliated him in
front of 45,000 Brazilian fans: Stipe Miocic. However, if “Vai
Cavalo” is to get a second crack at Miocic or the heavyweight
champion's next challenger -- Junior dos Santos, who shockingly
knocked out Werdum in his October 2008 UFC debut -- he will likely
have to settle another score first: Werdum faces rival Alistair
Overeem in a rubber match at UFC 213 on July 8.
23
Fight odds: Yoel Romero opens as a big favorite over Michael Bisping | BJPenn.com
Michael Bisping is currently riding a five-fight winning streak and is coming off a UFC middleweight title defense win over Dan Henderson, which took place at UFC 204 in October. Bisping won a unanimous decision over Henderson. Prior to getting his revenge on Hendo, Bisping beat Luke Rockhold by KO in the first round to win the UFC middleweight belt at UFC 199 back in June of last year. Bisping also won a controversial fight over former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva at UFC Fight Night 84, which set him up for the UFC 199 middleweight title fight against Rockhold as a late replacement for an injured Chris Weidman.

Silva Releases Statement In Reply To White’s Recent Comments, Clarifies Prior Remarks
. Guys, I want to be clear, I first answered a question from some of my fans about the return of the tickets, because they claimed that they would only watch the fight because I would fight. And with all the respect I have to my fans, I explained that they have the right to ask for the money back. So let it be clear to Dana and everyone that there is no personal question or fight with the UFC. The "right is right" and "fair is fair", there is no “dirty” play. Who goes to watch the other fighters, will not ask for your ticket back.

Matches to Make After UFC 211
If Jessica
Andrade thought she was the woman to dethrone Joanna
Jedrzejczyk , she was mistaken -- and gravely so.
The undefeated Jedrzejczyk spent the better part of five rounds
picking apart Andrade, as she kept her stranglehold on the Ultimate
Fighting Championship women’s strawweight title with a lopsided
unanimous decision in the
UFC 211 co-main event on Saturday at the American Airlines
Center in Dallas. Scores were 50-45, 50-44 and 50-45.
Nothing went according to plan for Andrade, who ate punches and
kicks to the head, body and legs at an alarming rate. Jedrzejczyk
connected with nearly 65 percent of the strikes she threw,
according to FightMetric data, and outlanded the challenger by an
eye-popping 230-94 margin. The champion was simply brilliant. The
225 significant strikes Jedrzejczyk put on Andrade were a
career-high, besting her previous mark of 220 set in November
2015.
In the aftermath of UFC 211 “Miocic vs. Dos Santos 2,” here are
five matches that ought to be made:
Joanna
Jedrzejczyk vs. Rose
Namajunas : One could make the argument that Jedrzejczyk has
become the most dominant fighter in the sport, male or female.

Demetrious Johnson opens up a bit about being unhappy with his UFC paycheck
People can argue the pound for pound status of fighters until they’re blue in the face. One point that can’t be argued is the merit of Demetrious Johnson’s belonging in that conversation. He’s the only Flyweight Champion in the UFC’s history and is looking to defend the belt for a record 11th consecutive time. He has never lost since dropping to the Flyweight division and is a perfect 12-0 at 125 pounds.
