Michael Bisping Gets Short-Notice Title Shot Against Luke Rockhold at UFC 199

After 25 Octagon appearances, Michael Bisping will finally get his long-awaited UFC title shot. UFC President Dana White announced on ESPN’s “SportsCenter” Wednesday that Bisping will replace the injured Chris Weidman and face reigning middleweight champion Luke Rockhold in the UFC 199 headliner on June 4. Bisping wasn’t necessarily the first choice, but White revealed that top contender Ronaldo Souza needs meniscus surgery following his win over Vitor Belfort at UFC 198 and wouldn’t be able to fight again in approximately two weeks’ time. “The next guy in line behind Vitor Belfort is Michael Bisping . There is no love lost between those two; they do not like each other,” White said. “So it’s the champ vs. the No. 4 ranked man in the world.” Rockhold and Bisping first squared off at UFC Fight Night in Sydney on Nov. 7, 2014. Rockhold won in dominant fashion, as he dropped “The Count” with a head kick and finished the contest with a guillotine choke 57 seconds into the second round. Since then, Bisping has won three straight fights, taking decision wins over Anderson Silva , Thales Leites and C.

Chris Weidman Reveals Injury That Led to UFC 199 Withdrawal

Chris Weidman did his best to make it to UFC 199 , but in the end his body simply wouldn’t cooperate. The former middleweight champion revealed in a Facebook post on Wednesday how he attempted to train through a painful neck injury before ultimately withdrawing from his June 4 rematch with Luke Rockhold . After nerve and neck pain affected his sleep and he experienced “severe vertigo” prior to sparring, Weidman underwent an MRI revealing that he had a “large extrusion herniation” which was located on a nerve “that shuts down the tricep and forearm area.” Despite receiving a recommendation for surgery, Weidman says he initially opted to receive an epidural injection instead. It did not make a significant difference. “During this time I couldn't sleep or get through any regular-day activity with the pain I was experiencing. I actually felt my best when I was working out but I couldn't survive throughout the day and night without painkillers and other medication to try to block nerve pain. I had another epidural scheduled for this Thursday but the doctors said again that it most likely wouldn't make a difference,” Weidman wrote.

Michael Bisping: If you believe in Jesus, you can believe I'll knock out Luke Rockhold | UFC Fight News & Videos

Things have been happening in my life recently where I’ve started to think, ‘Maybe things do happen for a reason.’ I ways given this opportunity and I’m going to take it. If people can walk around – and I don’t mean this in a disrespectful way to religious people – and you believe the son of God came down to earth 2,000 years ago, and he killed himself for our sins, and he can walk on water, and there’s a God up there looking after ourselves, and if you get on your knees and pray to him that things will change, if you can believe that, then you can believe that I can knock the f–k out of Luke Rockhold two weeks from Saturday.”

Dana White: Lookin' for a Fight - Episode 5

Opinion: Apply the Ronda Rousey Rule to Cyborg

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. The long awaited arrival of Cris Cyborg in the Ultimate Fighting Championship finally took place at UFC 198 and was every ounce of brilliant destruction we expected it to be. Now what? It’s evident that Cyborg is almost physically unable to make 135 and still be able to compete. She looked like a skeleton at the UFC 198 weigh ins and hit the scale at 139 pounds for a 140 pound catchweight bout. Those a little more ignorant to weight cutting will say: “it’s only four pounds!” But those four pounds are potentially a health risk, especially when you consider that there has been much conversation about ending drastic weight cutting for the sake of a fighter’s health. It’s clear that having Cyborg in the UFC would be big for the company. She’s a menacing wrecking ball of talent in women’s mixed martial arts where knockout finishes aren’t the norm.

Opinion: McGregor vs. Mayweather is a Joke, Right?

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. You guys heard the joke about Floyd Mayweather Jr. fighting Conor McGregor ? That was funny, right? Wait, you do realize it’s a joke? I hope it’s a joke. Please, for the love of all things combat sports, let this be a joke. It’s been almost two weeks since the internet caught on fire with rumors about Mayweather coming out of retirement to face McGregor. As ridiculous as it sounded, everyone’s collective eyebrows raised at the thought of two of the most boisterous names in all of combat sports squaring off against one another. Obviously, this was nothing more than a rumor, but with both McGregor and (especially) Mayweather feeding into it, it appears that it’s growing some legs. Mayweather recently suggested that McGregor is the only person he would come out of retirement for and has alluded to the possibility of the fight happening if the fans want it.

John Lineker, Michael McDonald Booked for UFC Fight Night South Dakota Co-Main

John Lineker and Michael McDonald will lock horns in the co-main event when the UFC travels to South Dakota on July 13. The bantamweight matchup was revealed during UFC Tonight on Wednesday. UFC Fight Night takes place at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and is headlined by a lightweight scrap pitting Tony Ferguson against Michael Chiesa . Lineker has won four straight fights, including two at bantamweight after repeated struggles to make weight at 125 pounds. “Hands of Stone” submitted Francisco Rivera in the opening round at UFC 191 in his first 135-pound appearance before outpointing Rob Font in his last outing at UFC 198. The 25-year-old Brazilian is 8-2 during his promotional tenure. After more than a two-year hiatus, McDonald returned to active competition at UFC 195, where he submitted Masanori Kanehara with a rear-naked choke 2:09 into the second round on Jan. 2. The former bantamweight title challenger is 5-2 in the Octagon and 17-3 as a professional overall.

Video: Gassiev Scores KO of the Year Candidate in PBC on FS1 Main Event

The capacity crowd inside the Black Bear Casino Resort in Carlton, Minnesota, was hoping to see cruiserweight contender Jordan Shimmell score a sizeable win against an unbeaten Russian. What wound up happening was one of the most brutal knockouts in recent memory, but not in favor of the former Michigan amateur champion. Murat Gassiev has been enjoying a groundswell of hype lately and for good reason. The contender packs a mean punch and it was on full display in the first round of the Premier Boxing Champions on FS1 main event. After digging a left hook to Shimmell’s body, Gassiev unfurled an atomic bomb of a left hook on the American’s jaw, ending the fight. Shimmell (20-2, 16 KOs) was out cold as soon as the punch exploded on his chin. He stiffened and bounced off the bottom rope before hitting his head on the canvas on his way down; his right arm extended out of the ring. The fight was immediately waived off with six seconds left in the opening round and Shimmell had to have an oxygen mask affixed to his face. Thankfully, Shimmell eventually regained consciousness and walked out of the ring under on his own, but the story was Gassiev (23-0, 17 KOs) and his highlight reel knockout.

Porn Star James Deen Files Complaint Against Bellator MMA, Viacom

Pornstar James Deen, who was issued California state citations and fines for allegedly exposing his employees to sexually transmitted infections, has filed a Cal/OSHA complaint against Bellator MMA and its parent company, Viacom. Deen has been under investigation since Dec. 8 for alleged violations of condom and workplace safety laws. Deen’s company, Third Rock Enterprises, has accrued citations of nearly $80,000 for failing to use condoms during filming and for not providing vaccines or medical examinations to its employees who could have been exposed to various STDs, an allegation that Deen denies. “Not one person was exposed to or contracted any illness on my sets,” said Deen, who has directed and starred in numerous adult films, said in a recent statement. “I gave the performers the option to perform with condoms however, they desired not to use condoms and I honored their requests.” By filing a similar complaint against Bellator MMA and the media conglomerate that owns it, Deen is attempting to show that regulators unfairly target the adult film industry. The complaint filed by Deen claims that Bellator and Viacom have routinely exposed its fighters to bloodborne pathogens.

Flyweight Champ Demetrious Johnson Inks Long-Term UFC Contract Extension

Demetrious Johnson won’t be testing free agency waters anytime soon. The UFC flyweight champion announced during Monday’s edition of "The MMA Hour” that he has signed an eight-fight contract extension with the Las Vegas-based promotion. “Mighty Mouse” had two fights remaining on his previous UFC contract but saw no reason to let that deal run out as a negotiating ploy. "I think when fighters do that, they want to see what they're worth, but at the same time, if they negotiate with the UFC, and they get what they like, there's no point going and testing free agency," Johnson said. "And the thing is, even Rampage Jackson said it before, nobody treats you better than the UFC.” Johnson is coming off a first-round round technical knockout victory over Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo in the UFC 197 co-main event on April 23, his eighth consecutive flyweight title defense. The Kirkland, Wash., native earned a reported $195,000 — including a $60,000 win bonus — for his work in the Octagon that night. Johnson has lost just once in 14 outings since joining the UFC in 2011.

Seth Petruzelli goes from killing the Kimbo hype to lead trainer for WWE

"One of my amateur fighters who used to train at my gym, Josh Woods, he was an amateur fighter, 5-0, and he always loved wrestling his whole life. He was a collegiate and high school wrestler. He went to a tryout for NXT and got accepted into their developmental program," Petruzelli told FOX Sports recently. "So he's wrestling for NXT right now, but one of his coaches came up to him and said 'Look, we know you came from an MMA background and we're really looking to get a coach to come in here to teach MMA, the jiu-jitsu, the striking, just to get some of our guys better technique and some more realistic moves.'"

‘TUF 23’ Recap: Episode 5

The episode starts right away with Lanchana Green and her team training, getting ready for her eventual brawl with fellow Brit Helen Harper . She tells the camera about her upbringing and how she got beaten up by these mean girls when she was a kid, which led her down the path of martial arts. Shortly thereafter, Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s strawweight champ Joanna Jedrzejczyk brings former opponent Carla Esparza into the locker room and the team is pumped. Jedrzejczyk explains that she likes her as a fighter and person and is excited to have her around. They are trying to gameplan Harper for her fight with Green later tonight and are working diligently on kick-catches and throws. After the first commercial, it’s back at the house and Harper tells the team that her ex used to beat on her. Finally, she reveals, so she dumped him, learned to defend herself, and now here she is telling her story to the world. She admits that people close to her were worried for her safety because she didn’t realize how bad it really was. It was hard, obviously, and she’s crying into the camera about her struggles and survival.

Abel Trujillo to Face Replacement Foe Jordan Rinaldi at UFC Fight Night on May 29

With Diego Ferreira having been removed from the UFC Fight Night “Almeida vs. Garbrandt” card on Memorial Day weekend due to a possible anti-doping violation, Abel Trujillo was in jeopardy of not having an opponent. Officials from the UFC announced recently that Jordan Rinaldi has agreed to be a late replacement for Ferreira and will face Trujillo on less than two weeks’ notice. Rinaldi, a veteran of both the WSOF and RFA, had at one point lost three straight fights and four of five overall. However, “All Day” kicked things into high gear and has been unbeaten over the last 18 months, going 5-0 in that span with three submissions. The North Carolinian most recently fought in December when he submitted Lashawn Alcocks via second-round armbar. Conversely, Trujillo has won four of five, all inside the Octagon. He’s coming off a stellar performance at UFC 195 where he submitted Tony Sims via guillotine choke in the first. The only men who have conquered “Killa” over the last five years have been Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov .

U.S. Congressman looking to expand boxing's Ali Act to MMA

Enforcement of the Ali Act has been routinely criticized since its adoption -- but it still affords boxers certain rights other combat sports athletes lack. One of these is access to financial information related to his or her bout. Under the Ali Act, boxing promoters are required to disclose "the amounts of any compensation" a promoter stands to receive from a fight. Such is not the case in MMA. The UFC only discloses that information to athletes who have negotiated a percentage of pay-per-view revenue into their contracts. In a civil dispute last year, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson accused Bellator MMA of withholding financial information related to a pay-per-view event he claimed he was contractually owed.

So, it looks like we’re destined for another reality show-vetted contender for a UFC title. I know, I know, Matt Serra knocked off Georges St. Pierre for the welterweight crown nine years ago in the most stunning upset our sport has ever seen. If you think there is more than the remotest of chances that happens again, let me be the first one to let you know that you can put that one to bed right now. I get why they tried to do the comeback season of “The Ultimate Fighter” back in 2007, the show was still somewhat fresh and they were looking for ways to jazz it up a bit. It was a way to reintroduce fighters that fans had seen before, and who, with the expanding catalogue of shows, were needed to bring name recognition to the cards. They even got the added bonus of a guy who should have lost in the finals going on to defeat the world champion.

"Just do your thing, you look like a skinny little twerp now and let's fight. That's it."

Gilbert Melendez predicts Nate Diaz finishes Conor McGregor again

"I don't see it going any differently. I see Conor, if he does fight him again, he fights like the smaller man. He'll try to stick and move and try to kick out Nate's front leg and try to take his shots. Ultimately, Nate will stand strong, he'll eventually walk him down, he'll start landing the 1-2 and we'll see the same finish," Melendez told FOX Sports.

Coach: ‘Jacare’ Souza Has a ‘Right’ to Eventual Middleweight Title Shot

Long before he cornered Ronaldo Souza against Vitor Belfort at UFC 198, Josuel Distak was Belfort’s coach in his title-winning bout vs. Randy Couture at UFC 46. While Distak was proud of “Jacare’s” first-round stoppage of Belfort this past Saturday, the trainer also wanted to show respect for “The Phenom.” “Belfort is a legend of the sport,” Distak said. “Not only for me, but ‘Jacare’ also respects him a lot. As soon as the fight was over me and Jacare went to his locker room to talk to him. It was Samurai behavior.” Distak did not deny that his previous experience with Belfort might have helped Souza’s game plan. “Jacare did everything as we planned. He started to move his head, Vitor moved to the left and got lost. We tied up all possibilities,” he said. With that win in the books, Distak doesn’t see any other logical opponent for Souza other than reigning middleweight champion Luke Rockhold . Souza was offered the fight against Rockhold at UFC 199 when Weidman withdrew due to injury, but the Brazilian had to decline because he needs surgery for a torn meniscus suffered in training.

Opinion: How to Dodge a Bullet With a Busted Neck

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Chris Weidman is an outstanding fighter with a serious history of injuries, so it may seem thoughtless to suggest that his latest training trauma is any way beneficial. So, naturally, that’s exactly what I’m going to suggest. Admittedly, the injury that forced Weidman to pull out of his UFC 199 main event against Luke Rockhold is severe. A hernia in your neck that leaves you with hardcore vertigo, results in constant pain and screws up the nerves in one of your arms is no joke. Weidman carried the injury through training while popping painkillers and receiving epidurals until it became clear that surgery was absolutely necessary, nixing the Rockhold rematch. Weidman turns 32 in less than a month and the former Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight titleholder has now pulled out of four scheduled fights in the last two years due to a variety of injuries, from broken hands, busted knees that required double surgery and, now, a nasty cervical-nerve issue.

Doctor: ‘Jacare’ Wanted to Postpone Surgery to Fight Rockhold at UFC 199

After his impressive win over Vitor Belfort in UFC 198 , Ronaldo Souza arrived at the post-fight press conference with a limp. According to some teammates who were backstage that night, it was due to a knee injury that happened the week before that fight. Shortly after the wrestling sparring session in which the ailment occurred, “Jacare” visited Dr. Rickson Moraes, who prescribed ice and anti-inflammatories. “I saw him one day before his flight to Curitiba. Once Ronaldo reacted well to the treatment, we decided to not ask for special authorization from athletic commission for use of corticoids (a type of hormone that reduces swelling and is typically issued as a therapeutic use exemption by athletic commissions). He had an MRI as soon as he returned to check the extent of the injury, which clearly got worse during the fight,” Moraes said. After the fight, as agreed, Moraes took Souza to his partner, knee specialist Alexandre Campello. “We work as a team of different specialists. Mine is shoulder; Dr. Alexandre Campello is our knee specialist.

Alistair Overeem: I didn't expect Stipe Miocic to beat Fabricio Werdum so quickly

"You know, four wins in a row. Nobody else has better numbers than that. Okay you have Cain Velasquez but he's coming off of a loss. He's ranked No. 2. I don't really get that.
