Michael Bisping Gets Short-Notice Title Shot Against Luke Rockhold at UFC 199
After 25 Octagon appearances, Michael
Bisping will finally get his long-awaited UFC title shot.
UFC President Dana White announced on ESPN’s “SportsCenter”
Wednesday that Bisping will replace the injured Chris
Weidman and face reigning middleweight champion Luke
Rockhold in the
UFC 199 headliner on June 4.
Bisping wasn’t necessarily the first choice, but White revealed
that top contender Ronaldo
Souza needs meniscus surgery following his win over Vitor
Belfort at UFC 198 and wouldn’t be able to fight again in
approximately two weeks’ time.
“The next guy in line behind Vitor
Belfort is Michael
Bisping . There is no love lost between those two; they do not
like each other,” White said. “So it’s the champ vs. the No. 4
ranked man in the world.”
Rockhold and Bisping first squared off at UFC Fight Night in Sydney
on Nov. 7, 2014. Rockhold won in dominant fashion, as he dropped
“The Count” with a head kick and finished the contest with a
guillotine choke 57 seconds into the second round. Since then,
Bisping has won three straight fights, taking decision wins over
Anderson
Silva , Thales

Bellator 155 ‘Carvalho vs. Manhoef’ Results: Play-by-Play & Round-by-Round Scoring
Vincent
Morales vs. Hamilton
Ash
Round 1
Tom Supnet is our referee for this featherweight bout. Ash opens
the bout with a meager kick to the body. Morales swings and misses
with a pair of right hooks. Morales is looking to keep enough
distance early for his strikes while Ash continues to try and close
the gap. A hard right to the jaw from Morales. Another, but Ash
shakes them off. A pair of stinging leg kicks from the Oregonian,
forcing Ash to tie him up. A few knees to the head from Ash on the
inside, opening a gash above Morales’ right eye. He’s bleeding
pretty badly but he’s not yet bothered by it. Ash clinches again
and takes his back, looking to take the fight to the mat. With two
minutes left, Ash finally drags his foe to the ground but he can’t
keep him there long at all. Morales is back on his feet but the
Montanan takes him down again, still all over his back. The blood
is pouring from Morales now, dousing his knees and thighs in a
slick red sheet. Morales eventually stands up again but he can’t
shake the lankier Ash off. The round ends with Ash on his
opponent’s back against the cage.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Louisiana: Daniel Cormier
Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe,
bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of
their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or
state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States
are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly
is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series,
the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of
all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily
need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need
to be associated with it.

Bizarre Rafael Carvalho Effort Nets Bellator 155 Split Decision Over Melvin Manhoef
Squirrelly judging allowed Rafael
Carvalho to keep the Bellator
MMA middleweight championship after one of the more bizarre
big-fight performances in recent memory.
Carvalho was awarded a five-round split decision over Melvin
Manhoef and retained control of the 185-pound title in the
Bellator 155 headliner on Friday at the CenturyLink Arena in
Boise, Idaho. Scores were 48-47 (Michael Bell) for Manhoef, 48-47
(Randy Anderson) and 48-47 (Rob Hinds) for Carvalho. The champion
did virtually nothing noteworthy from an offensive standpoint,
aside from meaningless takedowns in the third and fourth
rounds.
Both fighters were scolded for passivity by referee John McCarthy
in the first round. Manhoef, 40, picked up his pace in the second
and beyond. Carvalho, who seemed disinterested for much of the
match, did not follow suit. Worse yet, the Brazilian was warned for
a pair of knees below the belt and two eye pokes during the
25-minute encounter. Manhoef (30-13-1, 2-2 Bellator) navigated the
fouls, attacked the champion’s legs and body with kicks and mixed
in punching combinations upstairs.

Urijah Faber laughs at Dominick Cruz and T.J. Dillashaw's new bromance
"They showed me the 'Countdown' show and they showed me what Cruz was saying. He was saying, 'I can't believe Urijah would be such a dirt ball that he would insinuate something about T.J., who was his boy.' I'm like, bro, don't try to figure out my life," Faber said. "Just do your thing, you look like a skinny little twerp now and let's fight. That's it."

The Savage Truth: Making the Most of a Bad Situation
I assume you’ve all heard: Michael
Bisping will fill in for an injured Chris
Weidman at UFC
199 on June 4 in Los Angeles. I know 18 months can seem like
and eternity, but the absolute mauling now-champion Luke
Rockhold hung on “The Count” is still as fresh as a daisy in my
mind. I can’t help thinking this is a bit of a bye for the champ,
but what did anyone think was going to happen when half of the main
event fell out with less than three weeks to go?
It’s not like there were a ton of options, with Ronald
Souza just fighting in Brazil on May 14, not to mention a
possible knee injury he has to get checked out. Another potential
title contender, Yoel Romero ,
is on the shelf until June 12, having negotiated a six-month
suspension after testing positive for a banned substance in his
December fight with “Jacare.” Yet another feasible contender,
Lyoto
Machida , is also locked up in the United States Anti-Doping
Agency dungeon after admitting to taking DHEA last month. As you
can see, the cupboard was pretty bare.
Enter Bisping.

Opinion: Heavyweight Gold and Short-Term Memory
Stipe
Miocic is the man of the hour. The 33-year-old returned home to
Cleveland, Ohio, with the
Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title in hand after
knocking out Fabricio
Werdum in the UFC
198 main event on May 14. Miocic now resumes his double life,
with a twist. Instead of being a firefighter and aspiring UFC
contender, he is a firefighter and the “Baddest Man on the Planet,”
courtesy of his newly seized heavyweight crown.
While Miocic’s blue-collar story should endear him to domestic
audiences and beyond, it should not put new paint on the fact that
high-level mixed martial artists, including those in the UFC, still
hold day jobs and must rely on alternate incomes. It’s a reality
the UFC omits whenever possible. Knowing the guy in the main event
also works door security at a bar isn’t a hot selling point. Miocic
is the exception, with his noble firefighting pursuits.
Look at the UFC’s top stars: Conor
McGregor and Ronda
Rousey . McGregor’s popularity comes from his lavish life as
champion and persona as a cutthroat businessman.

Boxing: Charlo Brothers Prepared to Claim Piece of History
Some of the best fights involving Jermall and Jermell Charlo were
never seen. That’s because those fights were verbal barbs between
themselves, always one cajoling and pushing the other.
They are on the verge of doing something never done before -- twin
brothers holding every major junior middleweight title in
existence. Jermall (23-0, 18 KOs) already has the IBF belt, which
he will defend against Austin Trout (30-2, 17 KOs), while Jermell
(27-0, 12 KOs) will take on John Jackson for the vacant WBC
154-pound title. The twins will be two-thirds of the Showtime
junior middleweight title tripleheader on Saturday at The
Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.
Jermall will have the toughest task but feels he knows how to fight
Trout. He has received advice from Erislandy
Lara , who beat Trout in 2013.
“Personally, all of the awards and being great and doing all of the
things we have to do, we were planning on making history regardless
when we started our careers,” Jermall said. “I want to put any
pressure on my brother, and I want to help him make history. We
always work on putting pressure on each other to make ourselves
better, but I have to worry about what I have to do; and I’ll let
Jermell put his focus on Jackson.

Melvin Manhoef: Winning Bellator Middleweight Title Would ‘Complete My Career’
Melvin
Manhoef isn’t ready to call it a career just yet, but even he
admits that winning Bellator MMA gold would make for a nice cherry
atop a career that has spanned 45 professional mixed martial arts
bouts.
Manhoef will get that chance when he faces reigning
185-pound king Rafael
Carvalho in the
Bellator 155 headliner at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho, on
Friday night. The evening’s main card airs on Spike TV beginning at
9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT, with the preliminary draw streaming on
Bellator.com at approximately 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.
“It means a lot. Also at my age, people are saying, ‘He has
to stop.’ This is a very special moment. When I win this fight, it
is going to be one of the most special titles because.. I’ve been
through a lot. It’s going to be a real special,” Manhoef told
Sherdog.com. “It’s going to make my fighting career complete I
think because if I decided to stop tomorrow I stop as a champion.
It would be great.”
That doesn’t mean Manhoef plans on stopping. Prior to his
matchup with Hisaki Kato
at Bellator 146, the 40-year-old Dutchman had suffered brutal
back-to-back knockouts against Alexander
Shlemenko and Joe
Schilling .

Opinion: How to Dodge a Bullet With a Busted Neck
Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those
of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of
Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company,
Evolve Media.
Chris
Weidman is an outstanding fighter with a serious history of
injuries, so it may seem thoughtless to suggest that his latest
training trauma is any way beneficial. So, naturally, that’s
exactly what I’m going to suggest.
Admittedly, the injury that forced Weidman to pull out of his
UFC 199 main event against Luke
Rockhold is severe. A hernia in your neck that leaves you with
hardcore vertigo, results in constant pain and screws up the nerves
in one of your arms is no joke. Weidman carried the injury through
training while popping painkillers and receiving epidurals until it
became clear that surgery was absolutely necessary, nixing the
Rockhold rematch.
Weidman turns 32 in less than a month and the former
Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight titleholder has now
pulled out of four scheduled fights in the last two years due to a
variety of injuries, from broken hands, busted knees that required
double surgery and, now, a nasty cervical-nerve issue.

Sherdog Prospect Watch: Lowen Tynanes
Hawaii has been a traditional hotbed for mixed martial arts talent,
and the state may have found its newest star in lightweight
Lowen
Tynanes .
The unbeaten prospect pushed his record to 9-0 with another
dominating performance inside the Singapore-based One
Championship organization on April 15, as he took a unanimous
decision from Sengoku and
Road Fighting Championship veteran Koji Ando . The
31-year-old Ando had won six of his previous seven bouts, losing
only to Shinya Aoki .
Tynanes used his wrestling skills to gather takedowns and sharp leg
kicks to pick apart his opponent at One Championship 41.
“That was my game plan and I followed it,” Tynanes told
Sherdog.com, “but I wanted to finish him, though.”
The 25-year-old Hawaiian has won all five of his fights in One
Championship and appears to be knocking on the door to a title
shot. Aoki currently holds the promotion’s lightweight crown and
has not lost a fight in more than four years.
“I want to fight the champion, for sure,” Tynanes said. “I’ve been
wanting a title fight, and I feel like I earned it.

Bellator 155’s Alexis Dufresne: ‘Nobody Saw the Real Me’ in the UFC
It’s been almost a year-and-a-half since Alexis
Dufresne last climbed into the cage to put in an honest day’s
work.
The Team Quest fighter dropped a unanimous decision to Marion
Reneau at UFC 182, which was her second consecutive loss. To
add salt to the wound of defeat, Dufresne, who had missed weight
for the second straight fight as well, was subsequently released
from the UFC.
In the meantime, the Californian used her time away from combat to
not only reflect on what had gone wrong in her last two fights but
to also start a family. Five months ago she gave birth to a baby
boy and the miracle of life gave her a new lease on hers.
“It’s a life-changing experience,” she revealed to Sherdog.com in a
recent interview. “It programmed me to be a lot more dedicated to
my life and my career. He’s motivated me even more to get out there

standing as one of the best featherweights in the world.
Curran captured the Bellator featherweight championship twice
during a span that saw him go 11-2 with six stoppages. Among his
victims during this hot streak were Joe Warren ,
Patricio
Freire , Roger
Huerta , Mike Ricci
and Daniel
Straus . But after he conquered Straus in their rematch at
Bellator 112 in March 2014 to recapture his 145-pound crown, he
lost in his next bout to Freire in their rematch at Bellator
123.
A loss to Daniel
Weichel followed and suddenly Curran went from the pinnacle to
the pit. He had lost two in a row and three of four overall and was
quickly becoming an afterthought in the sport.

Business Mogul Derek Stevens Hopes to Revive Outdoor Boxing Events in Las Vegas
When Derek Stevens was a kid growing up in Detroit, the Motor City
was overflowing with some of the best talent the boxing world.
Guys like Milton McCrory, Duane Thomas, Jimmy Paul, Steve McCrory
and, of course, Thomas Hearns were world champions from the
legendary Kronk Gym, led by Emanuel Steward. It was during these
formative years that Stevens knew he wanted to somehow be involved
in the sport.
When he grew into a successful businessman as an adult, he would
frequently fly to Las Vegas and Reno/Lake Tahoe to watch all the
biggest fights. He saw Mike Tyson in his prime, Julio Cesar Chavez
at his best, a young Oscar de la Hoya ripping foes to shreds and,
of course, the infamous “Fan Man” fight that was the rematch
between Riddick Bowe and Evander Holyfield.
The one thing that struck a note in his heart more than anything,
though, was the classic outdoor arena behind Caesars Palace, the
site that put Vegas on the map as the spot in town for the
biggest of mega fights. But as the years rolled on and with sites
like the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Mandalay Bay Events Center and now
the magnificent new T-Mobile Arena, outdoor fights in Sin City have
gone the way of the dinosaur… until now.

John Lineker, Michael McDonald Booked for UFC Fight Night South Dakota Co-Main
John
Lineker and Michael
McDonald will lock horns in the co-main event when the UFC
travels to South Dakota on July 13.
The bantamweight matchup was revealed during UFC Tonight on
Wednesday.
UFC Fight Night takes place at the Denny Sanford Premier Center
in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and is headlined by a lightweight
scrap pitting Tony
Ferguson against Michael
Chiesa .
Lineker has won four straight fights, including two at bantamweight
after repeated struggles to make weight at 125 pounds. “Hands of
Stone” submitted Francisco
Rivera in the opening round at UFC 191 in his first 135-pound
appearance before outpointing Rob Font in his
last outing at UFC 198. The 25-year-old Brazilian is 8-2 during his
promotional tenure.
After more than a two-year hiatus, McDonald returned to active
competition at UFC 195, where he submitted Masanori
Kanehara with a rear-naked choke 2:09 into the second round on
Jan. 2. The former bantamweight title challenger is 5-2 in the
Octagon and 17-3 as a professional overall.

Abel Trujillo to Face Replacement Foe Jordan Rinaldi at UFC Fight Night on May 29
With Diego Ferreira having been removed from the UFC Fight Night
“Almeida vs. Garbrandt” card on Memorial Day weekend due to a
possible anti-doping violation, Abel
Trujillo was in jeopardy of not having an opponent.
Officials from the UFC announced recently that Jordan
Rinaldi has agreed to be a late replacement for Ferreira and
will face Trujillo on less than two weeks’ notice. Rinaldi, a
veteran of both the WSOF and RFA, had at one point lost three
straight fights and four of five overall. However, “All Day” kicked
things into high gear and has been unbeaten over the last 18
months, going 5-0 in that span with three submissions. The North
Carolinian most recently fought in December when he submitted
Lashawn
Alcocks via second-round armbar.
Conversely, Trujillo has won four of five, all inside the Octagon.
He’s coming off a stellar performance at UFC 195 where he submitted
Tony
Sims via guillotine choke in the first. The only men who have
conquered “Killa” over the last five years have been Tony
Ferguson and Khabib
Nurmagomedov .

Opinion: McGregor vs. Mayweather is a Joke, Right?
Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those
of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of
Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company,
Evolve Media.
You guys heard the joke about Floyd
Mayweather Jr. fighting Conor
McGregor ?
That was funny, right?
Wait, you do realize it’s a joke?
I hope it’s a joke.
Please, for the love of all things combat sports, let this be a
joke.
It’s been almost two weeks since the internet caught on fire with
rumors about Mayweather coming out of retirement to face McGregor.
As ridiculous as it sounded, everyone’s collective eyebrows raised
at the thought of two of the most boisterous names in all of combat
sports squaring off against one another. Obviously, this was
nothing more than a rumor, but with both McGregor and (especially)
Mayweather feeding into it, it appears that it’s growing some
legs.
Mayweather recently suggested that McGregor is the only person he
would come out of retirement for and has alluded to the possibility
of the fight happening if the fans want it.

10 Questions for Fabricio Werdum
Reality has begun to sink in for Fabricio
Werdum .
Werdum surrendered the
Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title in a knockout
loss to Stipe
Miocic at UFC
198 on May 14 in Curitiba, Brazil. The defeat snapped a
six-fight winning streak for “Vai Cavalo,” who was felled by a
right hook from the backpedaling Miocic 2:47 into round one at
Arena de Baixada. Having returned to his home in Los Angeles,
Werdum has since started the process of picking up the pieces.
In this exclusive interview with Sherdog.com, the 38-year-old
former champion made no excuses regarding his first loss since
2011, reiterated his hope for an immediate rematch and put forth
his belief that his being dethroned was good for the heavyweight
division:
Sherdog.com: Right after your defeat, many people accused
you of having lost focus against Miocic. They said you were more
concerned with handing out “happy face” masks, paying homage to
Ayrton Senna and having your mother at Octagonside for the first
time. Do you think all those external forces were harmful to
you?
Werdum: A lot of people criticized me, saying I did a lot of
clowning and forgot about the fight, but as I said before, that’s
my way.

Coach: ‘Jacare’ Souza Has a ‘Right’ to Eventual Middleweight Title Shot
Long before he cornered Ronaldo
Souza against Vitor
Belfort at UFC 198, Josuel Distak was Belfort’s coach in his
title-winning bout vs. Randy
Couture at UFC 46.
While Distak was proud of “Jacare’s” first-round stoppage of
Belfort this past Saturday, the trainer also wanted to show respect
for “The Phenom.”
“Belfort is a legend of the sport,” Distak said. “Not only for me,
but ‘Jacare’ also respects him a lot. As soon as the fight was over
me and Jacare went to his locker room to talk to him. It was
Samurai behavior.”
Distak did not deny that his previous experience with Belfort might
have helped Souza’s game plan.
“Jacare did everything as we planned. He started to move his head,
Vitor moved to the left and got lost. We tied up all
possibilities,” he said.
With that win in the books, Distak doesn’t see any other logical
opponent for Souza other than reigning middleweight champion
Luke
Rockhold . Souza was offered the fight against Rockhold at UFC
199 when Weidman withdrew due to injury, but the Brazilian had to
decline because he needs surgery for a torn meniscus suffered in
training.

World Series of Fighting Signs ‘TUF 23’ Cast Member Phil Hawes
World Series of Fighting has signed undefeated middleweight
prospect Phil
Hawes .
WSOF President Ray Sefo
announced the roster addition in his
"Executive Action” column on Thursday. Terms of the deal were
not disclosed.
“Hardcore fight fans will know the man’s name, but soon I think
everyone will,” Sefo wrote. “…Powerful and quick and visibly
improving every day, getting fights has proven difficult for Phil.
But by signing with World Series of Fighting, we can promise him
fights against stiff competition as he looks to work his way up the
ranks.”
Hawes, 27, suffered something of an upset defeat in the opening
round of “The Ultimate Fighter 23,” as he dropped a unanimous
decision to Resurrection Fighting Alliance veteran Andrew
Sanchez .
Hawes is unbeaten in his three official professional appearances,
finishing each of his opponents within two rounds. However, he has
not competed since October 2014.
