Curtis Blaydes, Alistair Overeem react to being bumped from UFC 225 main card to prelims

Although fighting on a PPV card carries a certain amount of prestige, there’s a legitimate argument that fighting in the featured prelim spot actually garners more viewers. Blaydes, a 27-year-old Illinois native, didn’t seem particularly bothered by the switch. He said he was not informed ahead of time but decided to look at the positive side of the situation after the news came out (via Instagram ):

Holly Holm vs. Megan Anderson Bumps Overeem vs. Blaydes from UFC 225 PPV to Prelims

UFC 225 has undergone some shuffling at the top of the card. The promotion announced Saturday night that a heavyweight bout pitting Alistair Overeem against Curtis Blaydes has been moved from the pay-per-view lineup to the Fox Sports 1-televised portion of the prelims. As a result, a women’s featherweight showdown between Holly Holm and Megan Anderson has been elevated from FS1 to the pay-per-view draw. The change didn’t seem to bother either Blaydes or Overeem. “I’ve got no idea why the change was made, and [to be honest, I don’t care],” Blaydes wrote on Instagram. “It literally changes nothing, still getting paid and still have a job to do. Only perk now is I get to clock out of work closer to 8 as opposed to like 10ish.” Overeem, meanwhile, believes the revision could benefit his European fans. “For the record I have no problem with the decision because now people in Europe don’t have to stay up late, and the sooner the better,” Overeem wrote on Twitter. UFC 225 takes place at the United Center in Chicago on June 9 and is headlined by a middleweight championship clash between Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero .

UFC Fight Night 129 Prelims: Surging Michel Prazeres Outscores Zak Cummings in Chile

Brazilian powerhouse Michel Prazeres took to his new surroundings in the Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight division. Prazeres recorded his seventh consecutive victory, as he eked out a split decision over “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 17 alum Zak Cummings in the featured UFC Fight Night 129 prelim on Saturday at the Movistar Arena in Santiago, Chile. All three cageside judges scored it 29-28: Fabio Alves and Marcelo Vilhena for Prazeres, Chris Lee for Cummings. They fought mostly in choppy standup exchanges, with Prazeres (25-2, 9-2 UFC) leaning on his overhand right and the American connecting with intermittent left hands. Cummings (21-6, 6-3 UFC) -- who was cut by an inadvertent head butt inside the first five minutes -- employed a stifling clinch but saw his gains there erased by well-timed tactical takedowns from “Trator” in all three rounds. Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Middle Man

Kelvin Gastelum has become a legitimate threat to the Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight throne. “The Ultimate Fighter 17” winner improved to 3-1 with one no-contest since returning to 185 pounds, as he walked away with a split decision over former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo Souza in the UFC 224 co-headliner on May 12 in Rio de Janeiro. Gastelum, 26, overcame an inauspicious start -- Souza mounted him twice and threatened with an armbar inside the first five minutes -- to take charge with superior standup skills, flooring the decorated grappler in the second round before maintaining his gains in the third. Having hurdled “Jacare,” Gastelum has put himself in position to challenge for the UFC middleweight title later this year. For now, the Arizonan moves to No. 4 in the latest Sherdog divisional rankings at 185 pounds and awaits the winner of the forthcoming rematch between undisputed champion Robert Whittaker and 2000 Olympic silver medalist Yoel Romero . Gastelum was not the only star to shine at UFC 224.

UFC Fight Night 129 Bonuses: Lee, Macedo, Puelles, Benitez Earn $50K Checks

Well, Gabriel Benitez's night just opened up . pic.twitter.com/rpAx3E5E5V — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) May 20, 2018 Andrea Lee , Veronica Macedo , Gabriel Benitez and Claudio Puelles all earned $50,000 bonus checks at UFC Fight Night 129 in Santiago, Chile on Saturday night. Lee and Macedo received “Fight of the Night” honors for their featured flyweight scrap. Lee took control thanks to clinch work and knees to the body, and she also threatened with submissions in rounds one and two. While Macedo was game throughout, “KGB” punctuated her victory by mounting her foe and landing elbows in the final stanza. Elsewhere, Benitez slammed his way into a “Performance of the Night” bonus against Humberto Bandenay at featherweight. After rocking his foe with an uppercut early, Benitez swarmed for the finish, only to find himself trapped in an armbar. “Moggly” responded by slamming Bandenay into the canvas, and a few follow-up hammerfists clinched the win just 39 seconds after the contest began. Finally, an unlikely comeback netted Puelles the evening’s other “Performance of the Night” paycheck.

Hooker is 16-7 as a professional overall, with all but one of his triumphs coming via knockout, technical knockout or submission. Burns, meanwhile, has been victorious in three of his last four promotional appearances. Most recently, “Durinho” scored a second-round knockout of Dan Moret at UFC on Fox 29 on April 14. Demian Maia Still Plans to Finish UFC Contract After Lopsided Loss to Kamaru Usman

Prior to UFC Fight Night 129, Demian Maia revealed plans to retire upon the completion of his current contract with the Las Vegas-based promotion. Those plans haven’t changed despite what could have been a disheartening defeat to Kamaru Usman in Saturday’s main event at Movistar Arena in Santiago, Chile. Maia repeatedly failed on takedown attempts against a superior wrestler, and as a result he was battered on the feet en route to losing a clear-cut five-round verdict. Maia stepped in to replace Usman’s original foe, Santiago Ponzinibbio, on short notice. “I still have three fights on my contract, I want to do those three fights,” Maia said at the post-fight press conference. “This was short notice for this fight. I only prepared three weeks and my last three fights were against wrestlers. My game plan is to take the fighters down, so these were tough fights. I still have the will to finish my contract.” In his last three bouts, against Usman, Colby Covington and Tyron Woodley, Maia has failed on all 49 of his takedown attempts.

Kamaru Usman forced us to look up his Twitter. Now what will it take to get a title shot?

(It’s @Usman84kg , by the way. So obviously the next thing I had to do was Google 84 kilograms to find out that that’s 185 pounds, so then I spent a few minutes I’ll never get back wondering why a 170-pound contender was drawing attention to this discrepancy in the first place. Unless he’s referring not to his Twitter handle, but his bio, which reads: “UFC WELTERWEIGHT COMING FOR THAT GOLD STRAP!!” So the point of all this was … he saw himself as a future welterweight champion even back when he signed up for Twitter with the wrong weight class in his name? See, now you’ve wasted your time thinking about it too, so at least we’re in the same boat.)

34
The 6 biggest takeaways from UFC Chile, including what that unspectacular headliner revealed

After the fight, Usman said he’s done calling people out. Somehow I doubt that will stick. But with all this talent at 170 pounds, it shouldn’t be too hard to get him in there with someone who will test him soon. Maybe then we’ll actually get the full power version, with no injuries to hold him back.

UFC Fight Night 129 results: Gabriel Benitez stuns Humberto Bandenay in 39-second thriller

The two fighters came out swinging at the start, with Benitez landing a crushing left hand that sent his opponent crashing to the floor. With Benitez seeking the quick finish, Bandenay responded, grabbing hold of the right wrist and locking in an armbar that threatened to end the fight. But Benitez had other ideas, lifting Bandenay into the air, then slamming him into the floor in violent fashion. The impact dazed his opponent, and a few follow-up hammerfists sealed the result, leaving Bandenay out cold in stunning fashion.
