The Short List: Fighters who are totally getting screwed out of a title shot

I’m not trying to get too tinfoil hat here, but it does seem as though Belfort was set up to fail. And like a lot of people out there, I don’t necessarily mind that fact. Banning a treatment that could very easily be abused and lead to a disaster is a small price to pay for denying Belfort the ability to fight within normal levels of testosterone which, mind you, might have been thrown out of whack in the first place by previous steroid use (see: PRIDE 32). But the way things have turned out, he’s kind of getting screwed out of a title shot. He was scheduled to fight middleweight champ Chris Weidman at Saturday’s UFC 173. As soon as TRT was banned, he got yanked from the golden opportunity. And now, there’s no telling if he’s going to get it back.

UFC 173 staff picks: Barao, Cormier unanimous, but split with Ellenberger-Lawler

UFC 173 takes place Saturday at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.

Dan Henderson not guaranteed a title shot with win over Daniel Cormier

"Obviously if Hendo pulls off this upset, it's huge, huge," White told reporters at the MGM Grand. "He pulls off the upset against Shogun [Rua], he pulls off a huge upset against Cormier, we'll see. ... Its just stupid to talk about now because [Jones] is fighting Gustafsson, and that fight's not happening until fall, and we still gotta get through that fight, and then we see where he's at. Who's to say Cormier and Henderson, whoever wins this fight, doesn't want to take a fight between now and then? Or if they get hurt, anything can happen."

Rousey: Boxing is a 'limited form of fighting,' but Mayweather fight 'a terrible idea'

"You would never report me saying something like 'I think that Floyd Mayweather is the best boxer that ever lived, an actual, technical boxer‘  Rousey said during the UFC 175 press conference at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. "Of course Floyd would box the hell out of me if it was a boxing match. But boxing is a limited form of fighting, and we're a much less limited form of fighting and I've trained my whole life to prepare for things he hasn't prepared for. I prepare to get hit and to be taken down."

UFC 173: Barao vs Dillashaw Preview

MMA Live previews the action from UFC 173 including the bantamweight title fight between Renan Barao and TJ Dillashaw.

UFC middleweight champ Chris Weidman's pointed message: 'Forget Vitor'

"Even [though] the second fight, it didn't end the way I wanted ,I felt like I dominated both fights and I knew I'm the better fighter," Weidman said. "So I'm glad to move on and put that behind me and I'm excited to fight Lyoto Machida. He's a tricky guy."

Zak Cummings meets Kenny Robertson at UFC Fight Night 45

Robertson got back on track with a first-round submission of Thiago Perpetuo at UFC Fight Night 38 in March in Brazil. That bounced him back after a majority decision loss to Sean Pierson at UFC 161. He has alternated between wins and losses throughout his time in the UFC and now looks for his first winning streak since starting his career 10-0 before signing with the UFC.

UFC 173: Barao vs. Dillashaw staff picks and predictions

Patrick Wyman : Dillashaw is one of the brightest young fighters below 155, and he'll stick around at a high level for a very long time regardless of the outcome here. Unfortunately for him, there isn't a single area of skill or a single range at which the fight might take place where we can legitimately say that T.J. has an edge. While Barao probably won't be able to crack Dillashaw's perfect takedown defense, the reverse is also true, which means that this will largely transpire on the feet. Barao owns kicking distance, he throws tighter and more powerful combinations at boxing range, he's the better clinch fighter, and he has a more consistent record of throwing volume and pushing a brutal pace on the feet. In the end, I think Barao's diversity at range, proven ability to maintain high volume over five rounds, and experience will be the difference. Barao, unanimous decision.

Welcome to the UFC Naoyuki Kotani

Unfortunately, and despite all his experience, Kotani seems to suffer in may of the same ways other classic Japanese MMA fighters have suffered in international competition. He fights at a really low output pace. His range striking is mostly accounted for by a nice variety of front and leg kicks, though none thrown with a lot of authority. He has some decent dirty boxing, but doesn't go to it nearly as consistently as he could. He does, however, appear to be very strong in the clinch, and somewhat difficult to overpower. When he does go for submissions, he does so with power and authority. Unfortunately his shot and clinch entries aren't always great, so he's often an opportunist grappler rather than creating openings for himself. He has shown some decent chained wrestling and has a heavy catch wrestling base, so it's possible that he can find success with some skills not prevalent in most camps. His fight with Thiago Tavares was surprisingly competitive, in part because of Kotani's catch grappling setups.

An underdog for 7th straight time, but ol' gunslinger Dan Henderson keeps shooting

The going has been tough for Henderson lately. For a second there, it looked as though he was on the way to the first four-fight losing streak of his career, and perhaps a collective judgment that his time had passed. But until he retires for good, a Henderson fight will never be over until the final bell, not when he remains in possession of perhaps the greatest single weapon the MMA fight game has ever witnessed. And with a single strike, it was over, Henderson's equalizer leaving Rua in a crumpled heap.

UFC Embedded: Vlog Series - Episode 4

On episode #4 of 7, with UFC 173 just four days away, the main card fighters have arrived in the fight capital of the world. UFC Embedded is a new, behind-the-scenes , video blog series focusing on the final days leading up to an epic PPV event.

Bellator 121 fight card set with James Thompson, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou

"I’m back," Thompson said in the release. "I’ve been training harder than ever to get back to the big show, and I’m finally here. I’m going to smash Prindle on June 6, make my way into a tournament, and get that belt. No questions asked. Bellator needs some new blood, and trust me, there will be blood."

Gaps in the Armor: How to beat Renan Barao

It's been pointed out many times before, by many different analysts, that Barao has a tendency to get reckless and brawl. Normally, the assumption is that this indicates a lack of discipline on the champion's part, however it doesn't actually appear that Barao slugs it out for lack of self control. Rather, Barao brawls to prove to his opponent that he can. With power and speed in both hands and feet, a frenzied burst of offense is usually more than enough to convince an opponent to back off. Case in point: Pickett's work rate in the fight referenced above slowed with every Barao counter, until the Englishman ended up waiting around in front of his opponent, where Barao was able to time him and set him up for a knee that led to the finish.

Jake Ellenberger: The Beauty of This Fight is It's Unpredictable (UFC 173 Video) |

Some athletes want to have a game plan to follow that doesn’t deviate. That’s difficult to do in mixed martial arts, but even more so for the UFC 173 bout between Jake Ellenberger and Robbie Lawler .

Dan Henderson: 'People can say I’m too old,' but UFC 173 could prove them wrong

Coming so soon on the heels of a brutal rematch with Rua, and after a difficult 2013 that saw Henderson (30-11 MMA, 7-5 UFC) go 0-3 against some of the toughest fighters in both the light heavyweight and middleweight divisions, Saturday’s UFC 173 co-headliner (pay-per-view, 10 p.m. ET) with Cormier (14-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) made it seem a little like Henderson was being plucked from the lion cage and dropped into the shark tank.

44 EA SPORTS UFC – Roster Reveal

One of the hardest hitters in the UFC’s Heavyweight division, Roy “Big Country” Nelson has proven time and again that he packs enough power to end any fight with a single punch. Winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 10, Nelson quickly established himself as a fan-favorite, earning a second-round TKO victory over street-fighter Kimbo Slice in his first fight of the show before going on to win the title. Despite being a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and a long time student of Renzo Gracie, Big Country has primarily stuck to his standup game during his time in the UFC, earning all his wins in the organization by way of TKO/KO.

Smartest Guy at the Bar: UFC 173 Edition

Renan Barao’s second title defense will serve as the UFC 173 centerpiece. | Photo: The Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s summer schedule is in full swing, starting with Memorial Day weekend. UFC 173 on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas touches off an ambitious slate consisting of 16 events totaling roughly 170 fights through August. Photo: Dave Mandel/ Weidman was the original headliner. How We Got Here: Middleweight champion Chris Weidman was supposed to headline UFC 173, first against Vitor Belfort and then Lyoto Machida ; Junior dos Santos and Stipe Miocic were booked in the co-main event slots; and even rivals Chael Sonnen and Wanderlei Silva were briefly connected to this card. Instead, we have Renan Barao in his second defense of the undisputed bantamweight crown. While Dominick Cruz sat sidelined with a body that refused to cooperate, the Brazilian officially served as the unofficial champion for three fights before shedding the interim label.

An MMA vet sat on UFC 173's Vinc Pichel, ultimately sparking his pro career

“I work for AAA,” Pichel said. “I drive around, and I jumpstart cars and sell batteries and all that stuff. That’s my job. Full-time job, part-time fighter. So I get this call, and her last name was Smith, I think her first name was Patty or Patricia. I go there, and I jumpstart her car. I get in her car, and I see a picture of him and her and then her daughters. And I was like, ‘Hey, Mark Smith? Is that your son?’ Then I told her the story about how he got me into fighting. Then I said, ‘I’m really sorry he passed away and that I never got the chance to thank him for putting me on the path that I’m on.’ I got to basically let that out with her and talk to her.”
