B.J. Penn Removed from UFC 199, Suspended for Potential Anti-Doping Policy Violation

Former UFC champion B.J. Penn has been pulled from his June 4 bout against Cole Miller due to a potential violation of the UFC’s anti-doping policy. In a statement issued Monday evening, the UFC acknowledged that the organization had been notified of the possible violation by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). “Penn disclosed the usage of a prohibited method - the use of an IV in excess of 50 ML in a six-hour period - during a March 25, 2016, out-of-competition sample collection,” the statement read. According to the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, “all IV infusions and/or injections of more than 50mL (~3.4 tablespoons) per 6 hour period are prohibited at all times, both in- and out-of-competition, except for those legitimately received in the course of hospital admissions, surgical procedures or clinical investigations, without an approved Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE).” Like all UFC fighters facing potential anti-doping violations, Penn has been issued a provisional suspension. The 37-year-old Hawaiian was set to face Miller in a featherweight bout as part of UFC 199 .

Boxing’s PED Crisis Rears Its Ugly Head -- Again

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. When most people think of boxing’s alphabet-soup organizations, the letter groupings that come most readily to mind represent such world sanctioning bodies as the WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO. However, the familiar standbys have been joined in the public consciousness lately by VADA, WADA and USADA. Those are anti-doping agencies, and the renewed frequency of references to them in sports stories is not only disturbing but suggests that the crisis involving performance-enhancing drugs in the 1990s and 2000s is making a determined comeback. The clean-up so many people wanted to believe had been accomplished in recent years appears to be like the typical teenager’s bedroom; mom can demand that the mess be tidied up to House Beautiful standards -- and maybe it is for a while -- but before too long, dirty clothes are strewn everywhere and it’s the same old disaster zone. A raft of high-profile cases involving Olympic athletes, baseball players and, yes, fighters lends credence to the creeping suspicion that the plague of PEDs has not been cured but was merely in temporary remission.

UFC Light Heavyweight James Te Huna Retires After 25-Fight Career

James Te Huna is hanging up his 4-ounce gloves. Te Huna, who since 2010 has competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight division, announced his decision on Monday in a Facebook post . “I have discovered something that is tough to swallow (but made a lot of sense) since the last fight,” wrote Te Huna, “but this recent decision is a positive step towards a healthy future. “I hope you can all understand. I gave it everything I had guys, and those closest to me know how much of my life I gave to competition-I didn’t have the gift when I started..just put in the work to chase a childhood dream.” The 34-year-old slugger returned to the cage in March for his first bout in nearly two years, but his comeback was spoiled in a 52-second knockout loss at the hands of Steve Bosse . It was the fourth consecutive loss for the New Zealand-born 205-pounder, with all of those defeats coming inside the first round. Te Huna rose to prominence in his adopted home of Australia, where he encountered the likes of Hector Lombard and Anthony Perosh before joining the UFC in 2010.

The Stitches and Scars of Cody Garbrandt

SACRAMENTO, California -- Cody Garbrandt operates under the belief that yesterday’s stitches become today’s worthwhile scars. The Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight is covered in tattoos. Ink may be more common today than ever, but the trend obscures the fact that tattooing is at its core a ritual scarification process -- a process the 24-year-old takes to heart. He is willing to endure the many pains life offers because he knows scars demonstrate character, no matter what judgments are lobbed his way due to physical marks. After a Tuesday morning mid-camp practice at Ultimate Fitness, home to Urijah Faber ’s Team Alpha Male , Garbrandt sat on a blue bench in front of the gym’s lockers near the front desk, reflecting on a decade of fighting in the ring and a lifetime of fighting outside it. The heavy-hitting 135-pounder explained his numerous negative experiences have shaped him into a person willing to give a stranger in need the shirt off his back. However, people observe he is covered in tattoos -- they especially react to his neck -- and assume the worst.

Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather reportedly set for September 17th | BJPenn.com UFC Fight News & Videos

“News I believe is gonna break here in about 2 weeks…I have already booked two rooms, September 17th and 18th in Las Vegas. My intel is Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather is going to happen. It changed late last week. I got a call then somebody else sent me something [Sunday] and Saturday. We’ve booked rooms in Vegas. [It’s happening] this September.” “Mayweather did have a very bad last pay per view gate – 550,000 people, he tries to get 2 to 3 million. So I think this is the most profitable fight for CBS and Mayweather. CBS has been working with Mayweather for years. That’s why his fights are on Showtime, because CBS owns Showtime. “So Les Moonves [President and CEO of CBS] and the CBS peeps have decided, ‘let’s talk to the Fox – UFC peeps’ and you’ve got Fox and CBS, you’ve got UFC, you’ve got boxing, you’ve got Floyd, you’ve got Conor. It’s gonna make a lot of money for people.”

He was expected to headline this July's UFC 200 card in a rematch with Nate Diaz, but was pulled from the event after refusing to comply with his press obligations.

The Bottom Line: Save the Outrage

Following 25 grueling minutes (for spectators) on Friday, the Bellator MMA middleweight title fight between Rafael Carvalho and Melvin Manhoef went to a judges’ decision. The champion Carvalho, who had done next to nothing to win the fight, was declared the winner via split decision on 48-47, 47-48 and 48-47 scorecards. Announcers Jimmy Smith and Sean Grande were apoplectic. Message boards exploded in anger. Even referee John McCarthy seemed disgusted. It was greeted an all-time embarrassment of a decision. Hold your horses. The upset and tumult might be better off pointed in another direction or saved for another occasion. The 18th century English judge William Blackstone is known for his principle that it is better to let 10 guilty men free than to imprison one innocent. The view, widely held, is that it is far worse for an injustice to be perpetrated on someone who deserved better than to let someone go free when they merit punishment. The concept is of course intended for the criminal law, but the notion also applies surprisingly well to MMA judging.

Thomas Almeida, Renan Barao, Tarec Saffiedine All Slight Favorites for UFC Fight Night 88

Thomas Almeida , Tarec Saffiedine and Renan Barao have been given a tentative stamp of approval by the oddsmakers with BetDSI.com . Almeida (-151) will meet Cody Garbrandt (+131) in the UFC Fight Night 88 headliner on Sunday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship pairs two of the most promising young fighters on its roster. Almeida and Garbrandt are a combined 28-0 with 26 finishes between them. The 24-year-old Almeida, who splits his training between a Chute Boxe affiliate and the Macaco Gold Team, will carry a gaudy 20-0 record into the cage. He last appeared at a UFC Fight Night event on Nov. 7, when he knocked out Anthony Birchak 4:24 into the first round of their clash in Sao Paulo Brazil. Garbrandt operates out of Team Alpha Male in Sacramento, California. He last fought at UFC Fight Night 83 in February, when he took care of Augusto Mendes with first-round punches. In the co-main event, onetime UFC bantamweight champion Barao (-165) transitions to 145 pounds opposite Alliance MMA rep Jeremy Stephens (+140).

MMA’s Greats of the States | Maine: Tim Sylvia

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. *** He was one of the most unlikely titleholders in Ultimate Fighting Championship history. Sylvia transformed himself from a supposedly oafish, unathletic giant into a two-time heavyweight champion and one of the most reliable knockout artists of his generation. “The Maine-iac” was 13-0 with nine knockouts when the UFC first called his number in 2002. Sylvia stopped Wesley Correira in his Octagon debut at UFC 37 and then knocked Ricco Rodriguez unconscious five months later to capture the UFC heavyweight crown.

I have discovered something that is tough to swallow (but made a lot of sense) since the last fight but this recent decision is a positive step towards a healthy future, I hope you can all understand. I gave it everything I had guys, and those closest to me know how much of my life I gave to competition-I didn't have the gift when I started..just put in the work to chase a childhood dream. This career has expanded to 20 years and I have/am very grateful for all the help and support that I have received along this amazing journey. I got to learn and gain respect, discipline from martial arts, my culture and my family. Living a healthy lifestyle (minus the hospitals lol). Experiencing the positives and negatives of a sport-I have been through it all and I'll be using this knowledge in my next venture. I received a lot of help and I always done my best to give back whenever I could. I would like to encourage the youth to get involved and I will continue to promote.
