The Film Room: Stephen Thompson

Stephen Thompson takes on Darren Till this weekend in the main event of UFC Fight Night 130 . “Wonderboy” is fresh off a win over Jorge Masvidal after two tough fights with welterweight champion Tyron Woodley and is looking to get back into the title picture. A win over rising star Till could do just that. A True Karateka Thompson began training in kickboxing and karate at the age of three under his father, former professional kickboxer Ray Thompson . By 15 he was competing in karate tournaments around the world but it wasn’t until 12 years later that he found mixed martial arts. In 2010 Thompson began his professional MMA career and just six years later was competing for an Ultimate Fighting Championship title. Thompson had quite the meteoric rise to stardom and quickly became known as one of the best strikers in MMA. Although known for his elite striking, Thompson is a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under Carlos Machado and has some of the best takedown defense in the game, thanks in part to his time training with former UFC middleweight king Chris Weidman .

ESPN Acquires Full UFC Package, Adds Broadcast Television Deal to Streaming Rights

ESPN and the UFC have agreed to a new 5-year deal that will bring the mixed-martial arts league's entire rights package to ESPN. — ESPN (@espn) May 23, 2018 ESPN is going all-in on the Ultimate Fighting Championship . According to a report from Variety , ESPN has added the UFC’s television package to its deal, bring the total cost of the agreement to $1.5 billion — or approximately $300 million per year for five years. ESPN confirmed the deal on Wednesday. The deal will split the UFC contract between the sports cable network’s channels and its digital service, ESPN+. Per the new deal, 30 UFC events will air on various ESPN platforms beginning in 2019. That includes 10 main cards on ESPN’s television networks as well as 20 on ESPN+, which is five more than originally expected. Additionally, ESPN networks will broadcast prelims for the UFC’s pay-per-view events in 2019. Earlier this month, UFC announced an agreement worth a reported $150 million annually that in 2019 would bring Fight Night events to ESPN+ along with Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series, UFC Fight Pass programming and various other content.

UFC Fight Night 129 Post-Mortem: High Alert

UFC Fight Night 129 on Saturday was the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s inaugural event in Chile. The headliner between Top 10 welterweights played out over five rounds, as Kamaru Usman looked to validate his calls for a title shot and weathered veteran Demian Maia looked to right his ship after back-to-back losses to Tyron Woodley and Colby Covington . Usman cruised to a dominant unanimous decision and afterward took aim at Woodley and the welterweight championship. Usman’s game plan was clear from the start. He wanted to avoid grappling exchanges and engage Maia on the feet. Usman was successful in doing so, as he denied all 15 of the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt’s takedown attempts and utilized a reach advantage to pick him apart from the outside. A straight right from “The Nigerian Nightmare” in the fourth round floored Maia, who appeared to be suffering from a broken nose in the latter stages of the fight. The 31-year-old Usman has rattled off 12 wins in a row, owns a perfect 8-0 record in the UFC and finds himself in the thick of the title hunt at 170 pounds.

Episode No. 6 recap: 'The Ultimate Fighter 27: Undefeated'

Round 2 – Steele opens with a pair of oblique kicks followed by a classic low kick. He’s relentlessly attacking Mokhtarian’s injured knee, but is walking into some counter hooks from Mokhtarian. Steele lands a hand combination that causes Mokhtarian to put up his hands and wave his opponent in. Steele continues to pepper Mokhtarian with a diverse attack of strikes to keep him guessing. Steele lands a front kick to the jaw and Mokhtarian is starting to get frustrated. Steele connects with some more clean shots and gets Mokhtarian to back up toward the fence. Steele clinches up with his opponent and goes back to working inside knees and high elbows. They break, and Steele lands a nice head kick that grazes Mokhtarian. Some desperation from Mokhtarian begins to come up as he shoots in for his first takedown of the fight. Steele remains calm near the fence until the referee separates the action again with  fewer than 30 seconds left. Mokhtarian goes for a final blitz, but Steele gets ahold of him and burns off the rest of the clock with Mokhtarian pressed against the fence.

Video: Luke Rockhold Shelved After Suffering Leg Injury

And if that video wasn’t enough for you, here’s another of the stitching. — Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) May 22, 2018 It looks like fans will have to wait for a bit longer for a fight between Ultimate Fighting Championship mainstays Alexander Gustafsson and Luke Rockhold after Rockhold injured his leg in training last week. The two have previously exchanged words on Twitter after Rockhold announced he would be moving up to the light heavyweight division, claiming the weight class would be easier than the middleweight division. This didn’t sit well with Gustaffson, who referred to Rockhold as “chinny” after his recent knockout loss to UFC middleweight Yoel Romero and told the Californian he’d be waiting to welcome him to the heavier weight class. The bout between Gustafsson and Rockhold had been pencilled in at UFC 227 in Los Angeles on Aug. 4 but was never officially announced. MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani reported on Tuesday that the former UFC middleweight champion Rockhold had suffered a leg injury last week in training and posted a graphic video of the injury being stitched up: Rockhold is hoping to return to action by October.

Conor McGregor Lone MMA Representative on ESPN List of World’s 100 Most Famous Athletes

Conor McGregor’s boxing record reads 0-1, but he is in the region of $100 million richer for it. Not bad for a year in which his combined time in the ring and octagon totals the 10 rounds he lasted against Floyd Mayweather in their August megafight in Las Vegas. But he is never far from headlines. When “The Notorious” posts a video on Instagram, it goes viral, but after he threw a hand truck through a bus window with Khabib Nurmagomedov aboard, McGregor was worldwide news. A bail fee of $50,000 and a charge of assault and criminal mischief followed, but it has only stoked the fires ahead of a potential showdown with Nurmagomedov in what would be the biggest matchup in UFC history. McGregor is ever box office.

Page (12-0 MMA, 8-0 BMMA) eventually returned to the gym to begin training for his next fight, a meeting with David Rickels (19-4 MMA, 13-4 BMMA) on Friday at Bellator 200, which takes place at The SSE Arena in London and airs on Paramount via same-day tape delay. He decided that a public workout was the perfect place to pay tribute to his cousin.

Roy Nelson officially off Friday's Bellator 200 card

And then when you do and things go wrong, it’s hard to continue training again. And that’s the hardest thing. I’m lucky I’ve got a good team around me, coaches that want to motivate me, too, and just scare me a little bit.

Inside 'TUF 28' tryouts: Champ Cris Cyborg personally welcomes a new batch of contenders

The Brazilian slugger was happy with the turnout and believes the show will go a long way toward building out the division, and for ensuring the weight class survives past her reign as champion.

Rose Namajunas: ‘Not Much to Gain’ from Trilogy Bout with Joanna Jedrzejczyk at the Moment

Rose Namajunas already owns a pair of victories over Joanna Jedrzejczyk , so in her mind, it’s easy to see why a trilogy bout isn’t a priority. “Right now, that fight doesn’t really interest me at the moment,” Namajunas recently told TMZ Sports . “I think I’d be interested to see how she does with somebody else before even entertaining that possibility. At the moment, there’s not much to gain from running that back again.” “Thug” Rose scored perhaps the biggest upset of 2017 when she knocked out Jedrzejczyk in the opening round at UFC 217, ending the Polish fighter’s run as one of the most dominant champions in the promotion. While Jedrzejczyk blamed her performance on a bad weight cut, Namajunas proved she was no fluke, taking a five-round verdict against her rival in a rematch at UFC 223 on April 7. Still, humility hasn’t been the chosen path for Jedrzejczyk since then. After that second defeat, she addressed the rest of the strawweight division with the following message: "Bow down, I’m the queen.” Additionally, Jedrzejczyk has been adamant in her stance that she deserved to win a decision in the rematch.
