James Te Huna retires

The best thing about watching James Te Huna fight was that you always knew what you were going to get. The New Zealand-born Aussie, who retired Tuesday at the age of 34, wasn’t going to dazzle with fancy ground techniques, dominate with a smothering wrestling attack, or throw spinning techniques with reckless abandon. Te Huna was a fighter, old school in the best sense of the term, and when he stepped into the Octagon, you knew you were going to see a fight. Of course, when you operate with that philosophy, you will experience euphoric highs and crippling lows, and Te Huna had both in a pro career that saw him compile an 18-9 record, with the final ten fights taking place in the UFC. Te Huna debuted with a loss to Api Hemara in 2003, but over the next six years, he built his record and earned a reputation as a hard-nosed battler with thunderous power in his hands, a testament to his former day job as a bricklayer. In 2010, he got the call to the UFC, and it was the perfect time, as the promotion was making its debut in Australia. Te Huna was a big part of the local push, and he didn’t disappoint at UFC 110, stopping Igor Pokrajac in three rounds.

“I’m the only one out of the three of us who can say that I’ll whoop both of their a***s in one night. ‘Cause Conor can’t say that. Floyd definitely can’t say that, you know what I’m saying? Bellator 155 results: Carvalho, Manhoef disappoint, but champ retains belt in snoozer

The two noted strikers were expected to deliver a “kickboxing fight in MMA gloves,” but reality saw little more than a glorified sparring session. Carvalho’s most significant strikes may have been a few illegal knees to the groin, and he was never able to get the fight to the floor for any real significant advantage.

Video: ‘Mayhem’ Miller Misses Weight by 24 Pounds for Venator FC 3 Bout

Troubled former UFC and Strikeforce fighter Jason Miller missed weight by 24 pounds for scheduled middleweight title fight against fellow Octagon veteran Luke Barnatt at Venator FC 3 . “Mayhem” initially checked in at 209 pounds for the bout, which was then scrapped. Instead, Barnatt will defend his belt against middleweight Stefan Croitoru , who was supposed to fight earlier on the card, according to multiple reports. According to , Venator FC reportedly offered Barnatt 30 percent of Miller’s purse and an additional five thousand euros to remain in the fight against “Mayhem”, but the British fighter declined the offer. Instead, Miller, who weighed in at 205 pounds five hours after his first try, will lock horns with Mattia Schiavolin in a light heavyweight contest. Miller will weigh-in again on Saturday, at which time he cannot tip the scales heavier than 207 pounds. Venator FC 3 takes place in Milan, Italy, and is headlined by a welterweight showdown between Rousimar Palhares and Emil Weber Meek . Matt Hamill will square off with Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou in another featured contest, while familiar names such as Igor Araujo , Karl Amoussou , Cody McKenzie and Che Mills are also scheduled to compete.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Louisiana: Daniel Cormier

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it.

Nate Diaz: Conor McGregor is 'artificial' | UFC Fight News & Videos

“Can I get built up a little better?” Diaz said (transcribed by MMA Fighting ). “Conor McGregor is an artificial, they pushed him and he wasn’t whooping all types of asses and sh*t. They put me in, I’ve been in fight after fight, I didn’t do no media, I didn’t do no sh*t … now he’s where he’s at because the UFC kicked his ass and put him in gear and blew him up. How come he was such a big deal when he beat Dennis Siver. Who the f*ck is Dennis Siver? Is that guy even ranked? I’m like, ‘get the f*ck out of here.'”

The Savage Truth: McGregor vs. UFC ‘Civil War’

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. The thing about civil wars is that they rarely, if ever, are tied off completely, even when hostilities have subsided. It is usually an uneasy ceasefire that brings about the halt in open combat, followed by a whole lot of hurt feelings on both sides of the arbitrary border, more noticeably on the perceived losing side in most cases. The bad blood or festering wounds that sparked the conflict are generally still present, if not worse, after the parties have slugged it out. It takes a lot of time and good will to cool the boiling tempers and heal the ills that caused the feud to explode in the first place. With Conor McGregor making his case on the ESPN “Sunday Conversation” with host Kenny Mayne over the weekend, it was interesting to hear McGregor couch the nature of his quarrel with the UFC as a “civil war.” Far be it from me to put any words in the featherweight champion’s mouth -- who knows how careful he was in choosing those words -- but it is hard to imagine all of the issues the Irishman had were dissolved over a single dinner with his employers.

Urijah Faber laughs at Dominick Cruz and T.J. Dillashaw's new bromance

"They showed me the 'Countdown' show and they showed me what Cruz was saying. He was saying, 'I can't believe Urijah would be such a dirt ball that he would insinuate something about T.J., who was his boy.' I'm like, bro, don't try to figure out my life," Faber said. "Just do your thing, you look like a skinny little twerp now and let's fight. That's it."

Opinion: Heavyweight Gold and Short-Term Memory

Stipe Miocic is the man of the hour. The 33-year-old returned home to Cleveland, Ohio, with the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title in hand after knocking out Fabricio Werdum in the UFC 198 main event on May 14. Miocic now resumes his double life, with a twist. Instead of being a firefighter and aspiring UFC contender, he is a firefighter and the “Baddest Man on the Planet,” courtesy of his newly seized heavyweight crown. While Miocic’s blue-collar story should endear him to domestic audiences and beyond, it should not put new paint on the fact that high-level mixed martial artists, including those in the UFC, still hold day jobs and must rely on alternate incomes. It’s a reality the UFC omits whenever possible. Knowing the guy in the main event also works door security at a bar isn’t a hot selling point. Miocic is the exception, with his noble firefighting pursuits. Look at the UFC’s top stars: Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey . McGregor’s popularity comes from his lavish life as champion and persona as a cutthroat businessman.

Opinion: What Did Conor McGregor’s ESPN Interview Tell Us?

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Conor McGregor in a sitdown interview with ESPN’s Kenny Mayne over the weekend finally broke his silence on the myriad of issues that led to his removal from UFC 200 . The topics ranged from his perspective on what exactly transpired and led to his no longer facing Nate Diaz at the July 9 event to addressing rumors of a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. What did we learn about the situation and, more importantly, the relationship between the Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight titleholder and the promotion for which he fights? Well, we didn’t learn too much more than what we already knew. McGregor appears to regret not sucking it up and flying to Las Vegas for the UFC 200 press conference. However, he doesn’t appear to regret the decision as much as he regrets not being able to compete on that particular card and cash in on what would likely have been a massive payday.

Dana White: Lookin' for a Fight - Episode 5

They also meet up with former heavyweight boxing champion George Foreman, make a batch of guacamole and check out a flyweight prospect at some local fights.

‘TUF 23’ Recap: Episode 6

Eric Spicely is the member of Claudia Gadelha ’s team who will be fighting by show’s end, but the drama surrounding Abdel Medjedoub is the early focal point. UFC President Dana White swings by the gym and picks the Canadian’s brain to see what the heck is going on in an effort to figure out to do. White and Medjedoub sit down on couches in a side room of the gym. Medjedoub is actually contemplating leaving the show because of the hell that broke loose last week with his wife at home. White decides to let him get on the phone with his wife; she is still demanding that the fighter leave the show immediately or else she’ll leave him. In an unprecedented move, White allows the fighter to leave the house to return home, try and take care of the mess and then return to Las Vegas before the next fight, which will be from Thursday to Sunday. “This is a real weird situation,” White tells the camera. “I don’t want to make him choose between his career and his marriage.” After Medjedoub leaves the house, the scene shifts to Team Joanna at the gym, where Elias Urbina is getting ready to fight.

Sherdog Prospect Watch: Lowen Tynanes

Hawaii has been a traditional hotbed for mixed martial arts talent, and the state may have found its newest star in lightweight Lowen Tynanes . The unbeaten prospect pushed his record to 9-0 with another dominating performance inside the Singapore-based One Championship organization on April 15, as he took a unanimous decision from Sengoku and Road Fighting Championship veteran Koji Ando . The 31-year-old Ando had won six of his previous seven bouts, losing only to Shinya Aoki . Tynanes used his wrestling skills to gather takedowns and sharp leg kicks to pick apart his opponent at One Championship 41. “That was my game plan and I followed it,” Tynanes told, “but I wanted to finish him, though.” The 25-year-old Hawaiian has won all five of his fights in One Championship and appears to be knocking on the door to a title shot. Aoki currently holds the promotion’s lightweight crown and has not lost a fight in more than four years. “I want to fight the champion, for sure,” Tynanes said. “I’ve been wanting a title fight, and I feel like I earned it.

Boxing: Charlo Brothers Prepared to Claim Piece of History

Some of the best fights involving Jermall and Jermell Charlo were never seen. That’s because those fights were verbal barbs between themselves, always one cajoling and pushing the other. They are on the verge of doing something never done before -- twin brothers holding every major junior middleweight title in existence. Jermall (23-0, 18 KOs) already has the IBF belt, which he will defend against Austin Trout (30-2, 17 KOs), while Jermell (27-0, 12 KOs) will take on John Jackson for the vacant WBC 154-pound title. The twins will be two-thirds of the Showtime junior middleweight title tripleheader on Saturday at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. Jermall will have the toughest task but feels he knows how to fight Trout. He has received advice from Erislandy Lara , who beat Trout in 2013. “Personally, all of the awards and being great and doing all of the things we have to do, we were planning on making history regardless when we started our careers,” Jermall said. “I want to put any pressure on my brother, and I want to help him make history. We always work on putting pressure on each other to make ourselves better, but I have to worry about what I have to do; and I’ll let Jermell put his focus on Jackson.

Nick Diaz: ‘Everyone Is On Steroids’

Ultimate Fighting Championship partnered up with United States Anti Doping Agency to help rid performance enhancing drugs from the sport. Once Nick Diaz was dealt one of the most unjust suspensions by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, he went on a rant about how the sport is STILL littered with steroids.

How South Dakota MMA went from the Wild West to the UFC coming to town

"We fought hard and Senator Johnston was the lead in that and we got the athletic commission in place and they've been fantastic. I, by no means, wanted to promote fights, but I wanted to set the tone with the commission and with what fans in South Dakota should expect from fights, so I was contacted by good buddy Ed Soares and he got the first promoter's license and we did RFA fights," Martin said. "We just did our fourth fight and Dana White was there for 'Looking for a Fight' and it's been extremely successful."

Opinion: How to Dodge a Bullet With a Busted Neck

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Chris Weidman is an outstanding fighter with a serious history of injuries, so it may seem thoughtless to suggest that his latest training trauma is any way beneficial. So, naturally, that’s exactly what I’m going to suggest. Admittedly, the injury that forced Weidman to pull out of his UFC 199 main event against Luke Rockhold is severe. A hernia in your neck that leaves you with hardcore vertigo, results in constant pain and screws up the nerves in one of your arms is no joke. Weidman carried the injury through training while popping painkillers and receiving epidurals until it became clear that surgery was absolutely necessary, nixing the Rockhold rematch. Weidman turns 32 in less than a month and the former Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight titleholder has now pulled out of four scheduled fights in the last two years due to a variety of injuries, from broken hands, busted knees that required double surgery and, now, a nasty cervical-nerve issue.

Melvin Manhoef: Winning Bellator Middleweight Title Would ‘Complete My Career’

Melvin Manhoef isn’t ready to call it a career just yet, but even he admits that winning Bellator MMA gold would make for a nice cherry atop a career that has spanned 45 professional mixed martial arts bouts.   Manhoef will  get that chance when he faces reigning 185-pound king Rafael Carvalho in the Bellator 155 headliner at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho, on Friday night. The evening’s main card airs on Spike TV beginning at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT, with the preliminary draw streaming on at approximately 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT.     “It means a lot. Also at my age, people are saying, ‘He has to stop.’ This is a very special moment. When I win this fight, it is going to be one of the most special titles because.. I’ve been through a lot. It’s going to be a real special,” Manhoef told “It’s going to make my fighting career complete I think because if I decided to stop tomorrow I stop as a champion. It would be great.”   That doesn’t mean Manhoef plans on stopping. Prior to his matchup with Hisaki Kato at Bellator 146, the 40-year-old Dutchman had suffered brutal back-to-back knockouts against Alexander Shlemenko and Joe Schilling .

John Lineker, Michael McDonald Booked for UFC Fight Night South Dakota Co-Main

John Lineker and Michael McDonald will lock horns in the co-main event when the UFC travels to South Dakota on July 13. The bantamweight matchup was revealed during UFC Tonight on Wednesday. UFC Fight Night takes place at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and is headlined by a lightweight scrap pitting Tony Ferguson against Michael Chiesa . Lineker has won four straight fights, including two at bantamweight after repeated struggles to make weight at 125 pounds. “Hands of Stone” submitted Francisco Rivera in the opening round at UFC 191 in his first 135-pound appearance before outpointing Rob Font in his last outing at UFC 198. The 25-year-old Brazilian is 8-2 during his promotional tenure. After more than a two-year hiatus, McDonald returned to active competition at UFC 195, where he submitted Masanori Kanehara with a rear-naked choke 2:09 into the second round on Jan. 2. The former bantamweight title challenger is 5-2 in the Octagon and 17-3 as a professional overall.

10 Questions for Fabricio Werdum

Reality has begun to sink in for Fabricio Werdum . Werdum surrendered the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title in a knockout loss to Stipe Miocic at UFC 198 on May 14 in Curitiba, Brazil. The defeat snapped a six-fight winning streak for “Vai Cavalo,” who was felled by a right hook from the backpedaling Miocic 2:47 into round one at Arena de Baixada. Having returned to his home in Los Angeles, Werdum has since started the process of picking up the pieces. In this exclusive interview with, the 38-year-old former champion made no excuses regarding his first loss since 2011, reiterated his hope for an immediate rematch and put forth his belief that his being dethroned was good for the heavyweight division: Right after your defeat, many people accused you of having lost focus against Miocic. They said you were more concerned with handing out “happy face” masks, paying homage to Ayrton Senna and having your mother at Octagonside for the first time. Do you think all those external forces were harmful to you? Werdum: A lot of people criticized me, saying I did a lot of clowning and forgot about the fight, but as I said before, that’s my way.

Diego Brandao Accepts 9-Month Suspension from USADA for Positive Marijuana Test

Former UFC featherweight Diego Brandao has accepted a nine-month suspension for failing a drug test at UFC 195, according to a statement from the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). Brandao tested positive for Carboxy-THC, a metabolite of marijuana and/or hashish, in a sample taken during an in-competition drug test at the Jan. 2 event. The suspension is retroactive to the date of the event, but Brandao will be eligible for a one-month reduction in length “pending the satisfactory completion of an approved anti-doping educational program.” Brandao is also subject to additional penalties from the Nevada Athletic Commission since UFC 195 took place in Las Vegas. He still has to appear before the NAC for a disciplinary hearing. Brandao was arrested on three felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and one charge of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon for an incident in which he allegedly hit an Albuquerque, N.M., strip club employee in the face with a gun last month. “The Ultimate Fighter 14” winner was released from the Las Vegas-based promotion shortly thereafter.

Victory FC 50’s Maki Pitolo Hoping to Catch UFC’s Attention with Impressive Win

Almost every day in the world of MMA, somebody is talking about some fighter who will be the next big thing. The next Ronda Rousey . The next Chuck Liddell . The next Jon Jones . It’s a constant struggle keep up with how many future all-time greats are among us, especially when many of them flame out before becoming the next George Jetson, let alone the next Georges St. Pierre (see: Phillipe Nover ). But in the case of Hawaii’s Maki Pitolo , those who have created the buzz around him might be on to something. The explosive young welterweight contender has been reminding many of a young B.J. Penn and it seems like a formality before Pitolo gets the call to compete for the UFC. Pitolo will have all of his skills on full display Saturday night in one of the featured bouts of Victory FC 50, which will be streamed live on UFC Fight Pass starting at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. Trying to derail his hype train is crafty veteran Justin Guthrie , a man with more than triple the amount of professional MMA fights than Pitolo. Guthrie, who has also competed for Bellator and Titan FC, will easily be the most accomplished opponent of young Maki’s career, but that is something the Hawaiian kid wants.
