Opinion: A Perfect Man to Mosh for Trump

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. On Wednesday evening, I awoke from a nap to find my Twitter mentions filled with screenshots from CNN's coverage of a Donald Trump campaign rally in Anaheim, California. While I was caught off guard initially, it wasn't long before my sleepy eyes recalibrated and focused on the enormous upper body bust of Tito Ortiz : his chest, shoulders and head making him appear twice the size of every other human in the hard camera-facing gallery. @jordanbreen @TheSavageTruth @TJDeSantis it appears Tito Ortiz is a Trump supporter... pic.twitter.com/1XrXEYQ8xB — Cody Harms (@cgharms) May 25, 2016 Mixed martial arts fans love to make fun of Ortiz and frankly, with good reason. Ortiz's outlandish excuse making, hilarious malapropisms and generally over-the-top persona have made him an easy target of mockery over the last decade or so. Having him front and center supporting the most polarizing, bombastic demagogue in recent memory is too delicious and too expected to resist.

Former Title Challenger Joe Soto Replaces ‘Kid’ Yamamoto at UFC Fight Night Ottawa

Onetime bantamweight title challenger Joe Soto will step in for Norifumi Yamamoto and face Chris Beal at UFC Fight Night Ottawa on June 18. Promotion officials announced the change on Thursday. UFC Fight Night takes place at TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and is headlined by a pivotal welterweight showdown between Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson . A reason for Yamamoto’s withdrawal was not revealed. A Bellator and Tachi Palace Fights veteran, Soto made his Octagon debut in a 135-pound title bout against T.J. Dillashaw after original foe Renan Barao had weight-cut issues heading into the UFC 177 headliner. Soto lost that bout via fifth-round knockout and has since suffered defeats to Anthony Birchak and Michinori Tanaka in his next two promotional appearances. After winning his first two UFC bouts, Beal went 0-2 in 2015, falling to Chris Kelades via split decision and Neil Seery by unanimous decision.

Former Employee Zach Light Files Lawsuit Against Bellator MMA

Zach Light has filed a wrongful termination lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against former employer Bellator MMA and parent company Viacom. According to documents obtained by Bloody Elbow’s Paul Gift , Light is protesting “certain illegal practices jeopardizing the health and safety of professional fighters and mixed martial artists all for the defendants’ profit and financial gain.” Light, who previously fought for the UFC and Strikeforce in his MMA career, was hired as Bellator’s Talent Development Director under former promotion head Bjorn Rebney. In the complaint Light alleges that Bellator’s business practices changed when Scott Coker become CEO in June 2014. Light makes several damning accusations toward the California-based promotion in the complaint. Light alleges that heavyweight fighter Ryan Martinez ’s medicals were forged prior to Bellator 126 in Phoenix on Sept. 26, 2014 and that fighters on the Bellator 131 card in San Diego submitted medicals performed by someone who was not a licensed physician.

Bellator 156 Gets Honeycutt-Parlo Main Card Bout, Two New Prelims

California-based MMA promotion Bellator announced Thursday that three more fights have been tacked onto the Bellator 156 card, which goes down on June 17 at Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif. Chris Honeycutt will move up to middleweight to take on Mikkel Parlo on the main card. Honeycutt, who last fought at Bellator 153, is coming off an impressive victory over Matt Secor in which “The Cutt” won a dominant unanimous decision. A lifetime welterweight, Honeycutt will likely have his hands full against Parlo, who is riding a two-fight winning streak; the Dane has won four of five overall. On the preliminary portion of the card is a showdown between Ben Reiter and A.J. Matthews , also at middleweight. Finally, Thiago Jambo Goncalves will take on Ricky Rainey in a welterweight encounter to round out the prelims. Bellator 156 will be anchored by the bantamweight championship between titlist Marcos Galvao and Eduardo Dantas . Chidi Njokuani will lock horns with Douglas Lima in the co-feature while Brandon Halsey will oppose John Salter in a 185-pound scrum.

Matt Brown to Face Jake Ellenberger at UFC 201 in Atlanta

Matt Brown will lock horns with Jake Ellenberger in a welterweight showdown at UFC 201 . ESPN.com first reported the matchup on Thursday. UFC 201 takes place at Philips Arena in Atlanta on July 30 and is headlined by a 170-pound championship tilt between Robbie Lawler and Tyron Woodley . Brown has lost three of his last four in the Octagon, but all of those defeats have come against the welterweight division’s top talents. Most recently, “The Immortal” suffered a third-round submission loss to Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Demian Maia at UFC 198. His other two most recent setbacks came at the hands of Lawler and Johny Hendricks . Ellenberger, meanwhile, has been in a prolonged slump, with losses in five of his last six UFC appearances — also against highly-ranked opponents at 170 pounds. In his last outing, “The Juggernaut” suffered a unanimous decision loss to Tarec Saffiedine at UFC on Fox 18 on Jan. 30. His only win in recent bouts came via second-round submission against Josh Koscheck at UFC 184.

Preview: UFC Fight Night ‘Almeida vs. Garbrandt’ - Almeida vs. Garbrandt

The future -- and perhaps the present -- of the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s bantamweight division will be on display, as Thomas Almeida faces Cody Garbrandt in the UFC Fight Night “Almeida vs. Garbrandt” main event on Sunday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. In the co-headliner, former bantamweight champion Renan Barao climbs to 145 pounds to confront Jeremy Stephens . The rest of the six-fight main card features a middleweight battle matching Vitor Miranda with Chris Camozzi , a lightweight scrap pitting Joshua Burkman against Paul Felder and a pair of welterweight bouts, as Tarec Saffiedine meets Rick Story and Jorge Masvidal takes on Lorenz Larkin . Let us take a closer look at each UFC Fight Night “Almeida vs. Garbrandt” matchup, with analysis and picks: Bantamweights Thomas Almeida (21-0) vs Cody Garbrandt (8-0) THE MATCHUP: Ah . . . do you smell that? The scent of violence is on the wind, and Thomas Almeida and Cody Garbrandt are to blame. Between, them, these two 24 year-olds have a near 90 percent finishing ratio.

UFC Fighter Gets In Terrible Motorcycle Accident

The risks the men and women of the Ultimate Fighting Championship take by walking into the octagon and dedicating several hours a day training to entertain the fans often goes unmentioned and under-appreciated. Fighters sacrifice a lot to put food on their tables and minimize risk by being as careful as they can during training so they don’t injure themselves. Danger lurks around every corner, however, and no matter how careful YOU are, tragedy could strike when you least expect it.

A day beside the cage: Scoring fights and getting mocked by 'Big' John McCarthy

It should be very clear, for example, what constitutes a 10-8 round. And yet, we continue to see scores that indicate judges are simply unwilling to give them. March’s UFC Fight Night 85 meeting between Neil Magny and Hector Lombard is a fight that saw a wild swing in momentum from Round 1 to Round 2. In McCarthy’s course, its second round is distinguished as one of only two 10-7 rounds in modern MMA history. Yet not only did judges not score it that way, they all scored it 10-9 for Magny, whose unanswered punches on Lombard prompted criticism of the referee for allowing the fight to continue.

In the Shadow of The Monster

He was so full of stories by the end, he decided to write a book. Kevin could never sit still long enough to type, but Elizabeth Randleman could paint her husband’s words the way they deserved to be painted, so together they lounged for hours under the night sky in their backyard, Kevin telling his tales –€” tales of becoming UFC heavyweight champion, tales of becoming a Pride Fighting icon –€” Elizabeth copying notes shorthand into her blue binder, then carrying it inside to unload into something digestible. The yard was Kevin’s escape, more tropical than it had any right to be in the middle of the Nevada desert, and those nights became cathartic, the two of them reminiscing about the old days, the days of spectacle and pageantry, of backstage brawls and shadow warriors from distant lands reigning as kings.

Joshua Burkman Believes Move to Lightweight Could Add 5-10 Years to MMA Career

Joshua Burkman made his lightweight debut against K.J. Noons at UFC Fight Night on Feb. 6, and while “The People’s Warrior” got the unanimous decision victory that evening, the overall experience was not a pleasant one for the 41-fight veteran. “Last fight I hadn’t weighed 155 pounds since eighth grade. That’s the first time I’ve weighed that in over 20 years,” Burkman said during an appearance on the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show . “I think that when I went to Vegas I was 180 pounds…When I got to Vegas my body just didn’t want to go under 175 pounds. I was doing everything I normally do at 170 pounds except for my body didn’t want to cut the weight. So the day before weigh-ins I was still 175 pounds. That night I had to go and start cutting weight, and I was 173 after not eating pretty much all day. It was 18 pounds in about 12 hours is what it was.” Somehow, Burkman tipped the scales at 156 pounds and outworked Noons over the course of three rounds the following evening, ending an eight-year drought between Octagon triumphs.

13 Things That Everyone Who Lifts Will Relate To

Lifting is a workout like no other, and if you do it often enough it can start to take over your life (in a good way). Soon, the names of each day of the week no longer have meaning to you — now, they’re Leg Day, Back Day, Chest Day, Abs Day, Shoulder/Arms Day, Cheat Day and Rest Day. You might start to feel like your life is on a constant cycle of “wake up, pre-workout supplements, workout, post-workout recovery meal, meal prep, sleep” — and you’re totally OK with it, because you feel and look amazing. Sound familiar? If so, here are 13 things you’ll definitely relate to.

Olympian & UFC Champion Daniel Cormier Named Honorary Chairman of Wrestling World Cup

“Wrestling in California is huge. The state championships draws massive numbers. I have a youth wrestling club, and every weekend, we wrestle in massive tournaments. The kids get to wrestle five, six times a weekend. In the LA area, this is a big deal, for people to be able to see wrestling at such a high level. The last time I was at the World Cup at the Forum, it was amazing. You can feel the history of the building. The team went out and had a fantastic performance. It will be a big crowd. People should not miss this opportunity to see the best in the world,” said Cormier.

Jeremy Stephens: Renan Barao 'lacks' heart and mental toughness

"This is the type of fight I want. It's probably one of the reasons why I'm one of the higher paced featherweights," Stephens told FOX Sports. "This is what I signed up for. This is what I love. Coming off the last fight, it wasn't much of a fight. It was so weird and I just didn't really feel like I got to fight. So I stayed in shape and thought maybe I'd get a short notice fight and then they gave me a guy in Renan Barao. It just goes to show the faith the company has in me. They want to see me fight. They want to match me up with the best and they like seeing a fist fight."

Aljamain Sterling Finding the Value in Being UFC Fight Pass Headliner

When unbeaten Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight prospect Aljamain Sterling signed a new contract with the UFC, he was of the understanding that he’d find himself in a better situation to market himself. So you can imagine how he felt when he landed the UFC Fight Night “Almeida vs. Garbrandt” Fight Pass headliner slot on Sunday against Bryan Caraway . It was the right opponent, but not necessarily the spot he anticipated. “Initially, I’m not going to lie, I was pretty upset about it first,” Sterling said during a recent media lunch. “I called my managers and said ‘Dude, what is going on?’ I thought, for sure, I was main event material.” The No. 4 ranked bantamweight admits that he wasn’t too happy that a pair of bantamweights that he’s ranked higher than ended up in the main event spot with Thomas Almeida at #7 and Cody Garbrandt unranked, but after he talked to the general manager of Fight Pass, he acquiesced and understood why he was fighting in that spot. “After getting on the phone with (UFC Fight Pass general manager) Eric Winters I understood their vision,” Sterling explained.

Postal Connections: Diaz vs. McGregor, Bellator Lawsuit & Cleveland’s Champ

It’s been another banner week for mixed martial arts news and we have the questions to prove it. Be it Nate Diaz doing his thing or Conor McGregor and the persistent Floyd Mayweather Jr. nonsense that keeps swirling around the MMA world, there is plenty to talk about in this week’s edition of Postal Connections. So, without further ado, away we go. Did you hear Nate Diaz on the MMA Hour yesterday? He sounds like he is part delusional and part Rain Man when it comes to how the promotional business is run. Me and my friends all love the Diaz brothers and I hope he gets paid but I don’t think he is going to get what he wants. What do you think? – Aaron Haha, nice description of Nate. Honestly, the Diaz boys have always had what is, sadly enough, a unique view of what they, as fighters, are worth and the comments Nate has made in the aftermath of his upset over McGregor and the purported rematch mirror those of Nick at various times in his career. They understand that they are the people the audience is showing up to see and that there is a number that makes the hardship that goes into training and competing for a fight all worthwhile.
