The Bottom Line: An Imperfect Vessel

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Former American League MVP and future MMA hero Jose Canseco began making accusations about performance-enhancing drug use in baseball in the mid-2000s. Through his book “Juiced” and a series of media interviews, Canseco became the most outspoken figure blowing the whistle on rampant steroid use in baseball. To that point, sportswriters and fans had largely looked the other way at the expanded physiques and statistics of the game’s biggest stars. Canseco fingered one after another for cheating. The reaction to Canseco’s revelations was abject rage. Canseco became perhaps the most reviled figure in sports, pilloried and ridiculed as a bitter, dishonest hypocrite. Many actually jumped to the defense of players who didn’t deserve that protection in the slightest. Canseco was nothing short of a pariah. The problem wasn’t just what he said; Canseco himself was an awful messenger.

Georges St. Pierre Hints That UFC Return Could Come at Madison Square Garden

The ideal date for Georges St. Pierre ’s Octagon return, at least according to Dana White, is UFC 213 on July 8. However, the former welterweight king attended an NHL playoff game between the New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday and hinted that the renowned venue could be the site of his first bout since November 2013. “I could be fighting here in a few months….Can’t wait,” St. Pierre wrote on Twitter. Big thanks @NYRangers for inviting me & Erik Owings @TheGarden for the game tonight! I could be fighting here in a few months... Can’t wait! — Georges St-Pierre (@GeorgesStPierre) May 2, 2017 The UFC made its New York debut at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 12 with a card headlined by a lightweight championship showdown between Conor McGregor and Eddie Alvarez . The Las Vegas-based promotion hasn’t announced a 2017 date for the Garden, but’s Ariel Helwani reported that the UFC has been eyeing a return to the venue in November. It was announced earlier this year that St.

Inactivity Sharpens Darren Till’s Focus

Darren Till for the past year and a half has gone through what he describes as the toughest time of his life after a shoulder injury forced him to the sidelines. Till wowed the masses with his grounded elbow finish of Wendell de Oliveira Marques in his Ultimate Fighting Championship debut at UFC Fight Night 67 in May 2015. The undefeated muay Thai practitioner’s bilingual post-fight interview, during which he waxed lyrical in Portuguese before addressing the English-speaking audience with his well-enunciated Scouse accent, further enamored those in attendance. Five months later, in his sophomore UFC appearance, Till shocked onlookers with how easily he handled former Cage Warriors Fighting Championship titleholder Nicolas Dalby . Everything seemed to be going according to plan -- he had two rounds in the bank -- at UFC Fight Night 76 in Dublin, until his shoulder popped out of place. The injury helped Dalby secure a 10-8 round and a majority draw on the scorecards. “When I felt it go, I just thought if I could stick with him I could win it, because I figured I’d won the first two rounds well,” Till told Sherdog.

Sherdog’s Top 10: May Tussles Worth Watching

In an effort to bring more attention to the global stage of mixed martial arts, this list does not focus on major North American-based promotions like the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Bellator MMA. *** Two of the sport’s top women’s flyweights are on a collision course in Invicta Fighting Championships . The well-traveled and battle-tested Vanessa Porto , who has twice fought for titles within the company, will meet undefeated Polish prospect Agnieszka Niedzwiedz in the Invicta 23 headliner on May 20 at the Scottish Rite Temple in Kansas City, Missouri. The event will stream in its entirety to UFC Fight Pass at 8 p.m. ET/ 5 p.m. PT. Porto, 33, last appeared at Invicta 16 on March 11, 2016, when she wound up on the wrong side of a unanimous decision in her rematch with Jennifer Maia -- a woman she had submitted with an armbar four years prior. The loss snapped her three-fight winning streak. Victories over Tonya Evinger , Hitomi Akano , Tara LaRosa , Zoila Frausto and reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s featherweight titleholder Germaine de Randamie buoy Porto’s resume.

Infographic: Chicago Artist Releases Illustrated Style Guide to MMA

Courtesy: Phil Thompson Some fans of mixed martial arts try their hand at jiu-jitsu or judo or boxing. Phil Thompson , on the other hand, took his passion for MMA a step further. The Chicago-based fightsports lover is a talented artist and, in his free time, decided to painstakingly create an illustrated style guide of MMA. The guide, which is a spectacular full-color chart, depicts the sport’s origins, from its roots in the West and East, from striking to wrestling. Naturally, everything coalesces in the middle as mixed martial arts with virtually every prominent form of fighting represented in great detail. Thompson’s chart starts at the top with striking with boxing, karate and kung-fu and slowly expands to kickboxing, savate, san shou and tae kwon do, etc. As the striking arts slowly merge into MMA, they devolve into pure grappling, culminating at the bottom with Greco-Roman wrestling, judo, etc. On the left of the chart, everything begins with the West’s fighting styles such as Pankration, catch wrestling and vale tudo and slowly morphs in the styles of the East like Pancrase, hapkido and muay Thai, for example.

Urijah Faber Saw Star Potential in Garbrandt, Dillashaw Early in Team Alpha Male Tenures

Cody Garbrandt and T.J. Dillashaw rose from obscurity to UFC champion relatively quickly, but neither man’s success came as a surprise to Urijah Faber . According to the Team Alpha Male founder, it was quickly apparent that both bantamweights had the potential to be something special upon their respective arrivals at the Sacramento, Calif.-based gym. “I could definitely tell that Cody had something special. I had the same feeling about T.J. when he was at our gym,” Faber said recently on the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show . “There was just a certain level of intensity and technique. Cody has been one of the most impressive guys I’ve seen in the sport, period. It was very apparent right when he got out there that he was going to be vying for the title very quick. As far as how fast it happened, it really is kind of similar to T.J. “Not many people knew of T.J. We knew him in the gym. We knew his potential. [He] vied for his opportunity and he gets the opportunity and takes advantage of it. The same thing happened with Cody.

Injury to Daniel Madrid Shakes Up Friday’s Legacy Fighting Alliance 11 Card

Legacy Fighting Alliance was slated to electrify Comerica Theatre in Phoenix, Ariz., Friday night with a stellar middleweight encounter as the headliner, but an injury to one fighter on the marquee has tossed the event into turmoil. However, the promotion was able to make a few last-minute changes to salvage the LFA 11 lineup. Middleweight contender Daniel Madrid , who has been on a six-fight winning streak, suffered an injury heading into his final days of pre-fight prep and had to be pulled from the card. Madrid’s opponent, Matthew Frincu , is a natural welterweight and will reportedly cut back down to his more comfortable 170 pounds and remain in the main event. Stepping in at the last minute to oppose Frincu is Maicon Mendonca . Mendonca, who was also on a six-fight tear, was originally slated to face Frincu’s Arizona Combat Sports teammate Kyle Stewart , who will also partake in the card’s musical chairs. Stewart, an unbeaten prospect at 5-0, will now face Ty Freeman , who has gone 2-2 in his last four. James Nakashima will remain on the bill to lock horns with LaRue Burley while Bruno da Silva will still take on Case Kenney.

Opinion: Nostalgia is a Hell of a Drug

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Nostalgia is one of the traits that make humans unique in the world. It’s hard to know if other animals ever feel nostalgic, since it’s not exactly visually readable like anger, sadness or fear. It’s likely that even emotionally and cognitively advanced animals cannot reminisce, as nostalgia is really an offshoot of -- or perhaps an intersection for -- imagination and emotion. It requires us to imagine the past to stir up similar feelings we once had. Whether nostalgia is part of the evolutionary development of remembering or if it hints at something larger, like the existence of a soul, it is a potent and uniquely human experience. This weekend was especially fixed on the rearview. It marked the 25th anniversary of the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, as well as the 100th day of Donald Trump’s presidency. All manners of punditry were employed to construct meaningful, coherent narratives about both of them to see if the distance of time has brought about new understanding.

This Month’s MMA Birthdays: Alistair Overeem Turns 37

No matter how the rest of his career plays out, Alistair Overeem will go down as one of the most accomplished prizefighters in history. He will celebrate his 37th birthday on May 17. Overeem has enjoyed a long and successful career as a kickboxer, grappler and mixed martial artist. The 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix winner has captured titles in Strikeforce and Dream while also putting together strong runs in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Pride Fighting Championships . A two-division standout who excelled as a light heavyweight and heavyweight, Overeem owns victories over a number of his contemporaries, from Vitor Belfort (twice), Igor Vovchanchyn , Sergei Kharitonov and Fabricio Werdum to Brock Lesnar , Frank Mir , Junior dos Santos and Andrei Arlovski . The Jackson-Wink MMA export last fought at UFC 209 on March 4, when he cut down Mark Hunt with a volley of knees in the third round of their rematch at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Overeem sports 38 finishes among his 42 professional wins: 19 by submission and 19 more by knockout or technical knockout.

Boxing Great Speaks: ‘Conor Can’t Beat Nate Diaz In Boxing, Let Alone Floyd’

“I think Floyd can knock him out because Floyd is a boxer.” [McGregor] is not going to know what to do. He hasn’t had the repetitions. He hasn’t had the experiences. He don’t know what it’s going to take. Sh*t, he gets tired in a five-round fight, even though they’re going five rounds and they’re wrestling. So he just needs to be taught.”
