Nate Diaz: Conor McGregor’s rise has been ‘artificial’

"Conor McGregor is artificial ... they pushed him and went everywhere. He didn't get to where he is by whipping all kinds of asses and (expletive)." Diaz told Ariel Helwani on the MMA Hour. "I'm where I'm at because I've been in fight after fight after fight. I didn't do no media -- how many times I been on your show? You caught me slippin,' I didn't do no media. I'm where I'm at because of strictly fighting. Now, he's where he's act because the UFC kicked his ass in gear and put him on a pedestal and blew him up. How come he was such a big deal when he beat Dennis Siver? (Expletive) is Dennis Siver? Is that guy even ranked? ... I don' get no props when I fought Rory MacDonald, the No. 1 welterweight contender and he couldn't finish me. I didn't get no props when I'm fighting (then champion) Ben Henderson ... everybody. Everybody I've fought in the last few years has been ranked 5 to 10."

James Te Huna retires

The best thing about watching James Te Huna fight was that you always knew what you were going to get. The New Zealand-born Aussie, who retired Tuesday at the age of 34, wasn’t going to dazzle with fancy ground techniques, dominate with a smothering wrestling attack, or throw spinning techniques with reckless abandon. Te Huna was a fighter, old school in the best sense of the term, and when he stepped into the Octagon, you knew you were going to see a fight. Of course, when you operate with that philosophy, you will experience euphoric highs and crippling lows, and Te Huna had both in a pro career that saw him compile an 18-9 record, with the final ten fights taking place in the UFC. Te Huna debuted with a loss to Api Hemara in 2003, but over the next six years, he built his record and earned a reputation as a hard-nosed battler with thunderous power in his hands, a testament to his former day job as a bricklayer. In 2010, he got the call to the UFC, and it was the perfect time, as the promotion was making its debut in Australia. Te Huna was a big part of the local push, and he didn’t disappoint at UFC 110, stopping Igor Pokrajac in three rounds.

Opinion: A Perfect Man to Mosh for Trump

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. On Wednesday evening, I awoke from a nap to find my Twitter mentions filled with screenshots from CNN's coverage of a Donald Trump campaign rally in Anaheim, California. While I was caught off guard initially, it wasn't long before my sleepy eyes recalibrated and focused on the enormous upper body bust of Tito Ortiz : his chest, shoulders and head making him appear twice the size of every other human in the hard camera-facing gallery. @jordanbreen @TheSavageTruth @TJDeSantis it appears Tito Ortiz is a Trump supporter... — Cody Harms (@cgharms) May 25, 2016 Mixed martial arts fans love to make fun of Ortiz and frankly, with good reason. Ortiz's outlandish excuse making, hilarious malapropisms and generally over-the-top persona have made him an easy target of mockery over the last decade or so. Having him front and center supporting the most polarizing, bombastic demagogue in recent memory is too delicious and too expected to resist.

Pudzianowski: Fighting the Shadow of the World’s Strongest Man

A long stroll on a surprisingly sunny Friday afternoon in London ended with Mariusz retiring to his hotel to relax ahead of the weigh-ins. He didn’t leave his room again until his team called him to come downstairs to be taken to the Wembley Arena. He waited for the elevator, dressed in grey tracksuit bottoms and a cream-colored t-shirt with the KSW 32 logo embedded in a Union Jack. It was an excruciatingly long wait, as the hotel only had two elevators side by side for all passersby — the stuff of nightmare for claustrophobic residents. On one occasion, Mariusz was crammed into the elevator with nine other occupants. His characteristic frown was even more prominent than usual.

‘TUF 23’ Recap: Episode 6

Eric Spicely is the member of Claudia Gadelha ’s team who will be fighting by show’s end, but the drama surrounding Abdel Medjedoub is the early focal point. UFC President Dana White swings by the gym and picks the Canadian’s brain to see what the heck is going on in an effort to figure out to do. White and Medjedoub sit down on couches in a side room of the gym. Medjedoub is actually contemplating leaving the show because of the hell that broke loose last week with his wife at home. White decides to let him get on the phone with his wife; she is still demanding that the fighter leave the show immediately or else she’ll leave him. In an unprecedented move, White allows the fighter to leave the house to return home, try and take care of the mess and then return to Las Vegas before the next fight, which will be from Thursday to Sunday. “This is a real weird situation,” White tells the camera. “I don’t want to make him choose between his career and his marriage.” After Medjedoub leaves the house, the scene shifts to Team Joanna at the gym, where Elias Urbina is getting ready to fight.

Joshua Burkman Believes Move to Lightweight Could Add 5-10 Years to MMA Career

Joshua Burkman made his lightweight debut against K.J. Noons at UFC Fight Night on Feb. 6, and while “The People’s Warrior” got the unanimous decision victory that evening, the overall experience was not a pleasant one for the 41-fight veteran. “Last fight I hadn’t weighed 155 pounds since eighth grade. That’s the first time I’ve weighed that in over 20 years,” Burkman said during an appearance on the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show . “I think that when I went to Vegas I was 180 pounds…When I got to Vegas my body just didn’t want to go under 175 pounds. I was doing everything I normally do at 170 pounds except for my body didn’t want to cut the weight. So the day before weigh-ins I was still 175 pounds. That night I had to go and start cutting weight, and I was 173 after not eating pretty much all day. It was 18 pounds in about 12 hours is what it was.” Somehow, Burkman tipped the scales at 156 pounds and outworked Noons over the course of three rounds the following evening, ending an eight-year drought between Octagon triumphs.

Postal Connections: Diaz vs. McGregor, Bellator Lawsuit & Cleveland’s Champ

It’s been another banner week for mixed martial arts news and we have the questions to prove it. Be it Nate Diaz doing his thing or Conor McGregor and the persistent Floyd Mayweather Jr. nonsense that keeps swirling around the MMA world, there is plenty to talk about in this week’s edition of Postal Connections. So, without further ado, away we go. Did you hear Nate Diaz on the MMA Hour yesterday? He sounds like he is part delusional and part Rain Man when it comes to how the promotional business is run. Me and my friends all love the Diaz brothers and I hope he gets paid but I don’t think he is going to get what he wants. What do you think? – Aaron Haha, nice description of Nate. Honestly, the Diaz boys have always had what is, sadly enough, a unique view of what they, as fighters, are worth and the comments Nate has made in the aftermath of his upset over McGregor and the purported rematch mirror those of Nick at various times in his career. They understand that they are the people the audience is showing up to see and that there is a number that makes the hardship that goes into training and competing for a fight all worthwhile.

Nick Diaz: ‘Everyone Is On Steroids’

Ultimate Fighting Championship partnered up with United States Anti Doping Agency to help rid performance enhancing drugs from the sport. Once Nick Diaz was dealt one of the most unjust suspensions by the Nevada State Athletic Commission, he went on a rant about how the sport is STILL littered with steroids.

Carwin: ‘I’d Love To Beat Up Brock Lesnar Again’

“I am rehabbing and pretty much recovered. I am pondering a comeback. I just need the right motivation or opponent. I’d like to get the belt and retire after defending it. Or just beat up Brock again… I still compete with the best of them and could beat any of them.”

Five Fight UFC Veteran Latest To Be Released By Promotion

Ultimate Fighting Championship has a roster of over three-hundred fighters who are all aiming to be the best of their division. Some fighters arrive at the company too early and don’t realize their potential, leaving the UFC with no choice but to release them so they can continue their journey to the top elsewhere.

Julianna Pena willing to fight Miesha Tate under one condition

"I definitely think so," Pena told "TUF Talk" about her title aspirations. "I beat everybody that they put in front of me, from all those girls on "The Ultimate Fighter" to everybody they've put in front of me since. No one else has been on that big of a win streak besides Ronda (Rousey) and I think that I definitely have earned getting a title shot."

Cody Garbrandt mocks Thomas Almeida for 'padding' his 21-0 record

"I look for him to come out, put his little Chute Boxe bull (expletive) and he only hurts people standing right in front of him. He's a good forward and back fighter, but I'm a different kind of boxer. I'm a boxer that has finesse, that cuts angles, he'll come forward and he won't even know where I'm at. I feel like once I tag him hard and he sees that I'm faster, he'll try to turn it into a brawl, which I'm fine with. I'm a better brawler than him, too," Garbrandt said.

Nate Diaz presented an award for his win over Conor McGregor

"It's got all kinds of credentials on there ... but it for, like, negative to positive. Because I went from negative to positive," Diaz said with a smile. "I was supposed to [have the award presented to me] at the Capitol but it was the same day as that UFC 200 press conference, so I had to take a rain check. But they ended up bringing it down to the academy and hooking it up ... it was pretty cool."

Jason 'Mayhem' Miller makes day of fight weight for new Venator FC III bout vs. Mattia Schiavolin | UFC Fight News & Videos

“Mayhem” looked confused as he weighed in at 209 pounds for his 185-pound title fight with champion Lucas Barnatt. Miller took off his shorts after initially weighing in thinking that perhaps the shorts could shed some extra pounds. Unfortunately, that was not the case.

Opinion: What Did Conor McGregor’s ESPN Interview Tell Us?

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Conor McGregor in a sitdown interview with ESPN’s Kenny Mayne over the weekend finally broke his silence on the myriad of issues that led to his removal from UFC 200 . The topics ranged from his perspective on what exactly transpired and led to his no longer facing Nate Diaz at the July 9 event to addressing rumors of a boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. What did we learn about the situation and, more importantly, the relationship between the Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight titleholder and the promotion for which he fights? Well, we didn’t learn too much more than what we already knew. McGregor appears to regret not sucking it up and flying to Las Vegas for the UFC 200 press conference. However, he doesn’t appear to regret the decision as much as he regrets not being able to compete on that particular card and cash in on what would likely have been a massive payday.

Eric Stinton Joins Press Row

Every Wednesday, Administrative Editor Jordan Breen welcomes a member of the mixed martial arts media into “Press Row” on the blog. This week, Breen is joined by writer and columnist Eric Stinton . After B.J. Penn 's removal from his UFC 199 bout with Cole Miller due to his IV use in conflict with the UFC's code under USADA, Breen and Stinton discuss Penn's previous clams that IV use was for “wimps,” his claims of ignorance and how it comports with some of Penn's infamous excuses in the past, from an allegedly separated rib in the Matt Hughes rematch to his Greasegate controversy with Georges St. Pierre . The two also discuss Penn as a sports hero in Hawaii, a state which once had a wildly successful local MMA scene but has seen it squelched by government regulation and taxation and how those conditions led to the UFC never coming to the state. Breen and Stinton also compare and contrast Penn with the next generation of Hawaiian talent and forecast some the state's best prospects, from potential UFC title contenders Max Holloway and Louis Smolka to undefeated up-and-comers like Boston Salmon and One Championship titleholder Angela Lee .

The future -- and perhaps the present -- of the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s bantamweight division will be on display, as Thomas Almeida faces Cody Garbrandt in the UFC Fight Night “Almeida vs. Garbrandt” main event on Sunday at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. In the co-headliner, former bantamweight champion Renan Barao climbs to 145 pounds to confront Jeremy Stephens . Let us take a closer look at each UFC Fight Night “Almeida vs. Garbrandt” matchup, with analysis and picks: Bantamweights Thomas Almeida (21-0) vs Cody Garbrandt (8-0) THE MATCHUP: Ah . . . do you smell that? Former Title Challenger Joe Soto Replaces ‘Kid’ Yamamoto at UFC Fight Night Ottawa

Onetime bantamweight title challenger Joe Soto will step in for Norifumi Yamamoto and face Chris Beal at UFC Fight Night Ottawa on June 18. Promotion officials announced the change on Thursday. UFC Fight Night takes place at TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, and is headlined by a pivotal welterweight showdown between Rory MacDonald and Stephen Thompson . A reason for Yamamoto’s withdrawal was not revealed. A Bellator and Tachi Palace Fights veteran, Soto made his Octagon debut in a 135-pound title bout against T.J. Dillashaw after original foe Renan Barao had weight-cut issues heading into the UFC 177 headliner. Soto lost that bout via fifth-round knockout and has since suffered defeats to Anthony Birchak and Michinori Tanaka in his next two promotional appearances. After winning his first two UFC bouts, Beal went 0-2 in 2015, falling to Chris Kelades via split decision and Neil Seery by unanimous decision.

UFC Fight Night Hamburg

We spend a wonderful night! It was my first time in this event and I enjoyed a lot. The only problem is that the security staff took too long to throw out some bad mannered viewers in the innenraum. We had to deal with two guys and one absolutely drunk girl that were bothering everybody around and the staff just decided to take action during the last fight (Joanna vs Jessica) even though several persons complained. I think this is unacceptable. If there are people who do not know how to behave, the security should throw them in the early begining.

After a devastating loss like that, I know his confidence can’t be too high, and sometimes, they say, you keep telling yourself these affirmations, and it comes true. “I think he’s trying to do that, but it doesn’t work. Thomas Almeida’s Trainer Predicts KO of Garbrandt, Says ‘Thominhas’ Is No Longer a Prospect

Thomas Almeida and Cody Garbrandt are two of the hottest commodities currently fighting at 135 pounds, and both have proven themselves to be true knockout collectors. The young bantamweights have a combined total of 23 KOs in their 28 wins -- 16 for Almeida, seven for Garbrandt -- so it stands to reason that the pair’s upcoming meeting could only end one way. Almeida’s trainer, Chute Boxe Sao Paulo leader Diego Lima , predicts that this Sunday’s clash at UFC Fight Night in Las Vegas will not reach the third of five scheduled rounds. “I don’t see how this fight could be decided by points,” Lima told this week. “They are two aggressive strikers with heavy hands and high-level technique, so you don’t need to be a genius to predict it will end by knockout, and I don’t think it will get into the third round. “‘Thominhas’ is ready for anything Cody brings to the cage, but what he loves most is to trade blows, so he’ll do his best to keep the fight standing up. I’m really confident Thomas will knock him out.

Ryan Hall vs. Alex White Set for UFC Fight Night in Sioux Falls

“The Ultimate Fighter 22” winner Ryan Hall will make his first appearance since winning the reality show when he faces Alex White at UFC Fight Night “Ferguson vs. Chiesa.” The promotion announced the featherweight clash on Tuesday. UFC Fight Night takes place at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D., on July 13 and is headlined by a lightweight showdown pitting Tony Ferguson against Michael Chiesa . The 31-year-old Hall was dominant but not thrilling in taking a three-round verdict over Artem Lobov at the “TUF 22” finale on Dec. 11. That was the fifth straight win for Hall, who had finished his previous four bouts by TKO or submission. White is also coming off a decision win over Lobov. The victory, which came at UFC Fight Night “Hendricks vs. Thompson” on Feb. 6, ended a two-fight skid for “The Spartan.” White debuted in the Octagon with a first-round knockout of Estevan Payan at UFC on Fox 11.

Coming off the last fight, it wasn't much of a fight. It was so weird and I just didn't really feel like I got to fight. So I stayed in shape and thought maybe I'd get a short notice fight and then they gave me a guy in Renan Barao. It just goes to show the faith the company has in me. They want to see me fight. They want to match me up with the best and they like seeing a fist fight."

‘Regular Guy’ Julio Pena Primed for Lion Fight 29 Bout with Travis Clay

Julio Pena is one of American muay Thai’s most promising prospects, and his skill set will be on full display Friday night at Lion Fight 29. The Massachusetts fighter is 4-0 as a pro and he’s been lighting up his opposition like torches inside the Lion Fight ring. The problem is, however, that Pena is already 36 years old and he knows time isn’t on his side in terms of turning his pro fighting career into a million-dollar empire. But his age doesn’t impede his desire to be one of the best at his weight and to hopefully capture a world title along the way. Pena has scored back-to-back highlight reel knockouts on national TV, and muay Thai fans already want to see the KO artist in against some of the best, though Pena freely admits that he’s not yet at that point. “I never go into a fight looking for a knockout,” he told in a recent interview. “I go in there with a game plan and I expect to do well and I do focus a lot on my power, but I never, ever go in there looking for it. I expect each fight to be a five-round battle. I’m still learning this stuff. I’ve been in muay Thai for about 10 years and I still have a long way to go.
