Bizarre Rafael Carvalho Effort Nets Bellator 155 Split Decision Over Melvin Manhoef

Squirrelly judging allowed Rafael Carvalho to keep the Bellator MMA middleweight championship after one of the more bizarre big-fight performances in recent memory. Carvalho was awarded a five-round split decision over Melvin Manhoef and retained control of the 185-pound title in the Bellator 155 headliner on Friday at the CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho. Scores were 48-47 (Michael Bell) for Manhoef, 48-47 (Randy Anderson) and 48-47 (Rob Hinds) for Carvalho. The champion did virtually nothing noteworthy from an offensive standpoint, aside from meaningless takedowns in the third and fourth rounds. Both fighters were scolded for passivity by referee John McCarthy in the first round. Manhoef, 40, picked up his pace in the second and beyond. Carvalho, who seemed disinterested for much of the match, did not follow suit. Worse yet, the Brazilian was warned for a pair of knees below the belt and two eye pokes during the 25-minute encounter. Manhoef (30-13-1, 2-2 Bellator) navigated the fouls, attacked the champion’s legs and body with kicks and mixed in punching combinations upstairs.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Louisiana: Daniel Cormier

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it.

Mayhem needed all of six seconds to take the fight to the canvas after Schiavolin fired off a wild kick. Again, Mayhem pinned him up against the fence and tried to grind the energy out of him. Schiavolin made it back to his feet and actually cracked Mayhem with a few shots, ultimately ending up on top of Mayhem! He fired off hammerfists and Mayhem tried his hardest to fight off the stoppage. The referee informed Mayhem to defend intelligently, and Schiavolin thought he was waving off the fight. Mayhem actually regained top position on the brink of defeat and tried his hardest to recover quickly.

Cody Garbrandt Scores First-Round KO of Thomas Almeida in UFC Fight Night Headliner

Cody Garbrandt GOT HIM. Down goes Thomas Almeida in the first!#UFCVegas https://t.co/Qiu0RnA8px — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) May 30, 2016 Cody Garbrandt has officially graduated from prospect status to budding contender. The Team Alpha Male product completely overwhelmed fellow unbeaten Thomas Almeida in the UFC Fight Night “Almeida vs. Garbrandt” headliner, knocking out the Brazilian star in the opening round of their encounter at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Sunday night. The end came 2:53 into the first frame, giving Garbrandt his sixth first-round finish and second in the UFC. “I know I’m the hardest hitter in the division,” Garbrandt (9-0, 4-0 UFC) said. “I’ll knock anybody out in the division. Dominick Cruz , whoever.” In addition to power, Garbrandt demonstrated patience in his dismantling of Almeida (20-1, 4-1 UFC). “No Love” stunned his opponent with a left hook earlier in the opening stanza, but he did not get reckless as Almeida attempted to answer the salvo during a wild exchange.

The Savage Truth: Making the Most of a Bad Situation

I assume you’ve all heard: Michael Bisping will fill in for an injured Chris Weidman at UFC 199 on June 4 in Los Angeles. I know 18 months can seem like and eternity, but the absolute mauling now-champion Luke Rockhold hung on “The Count” is still as fresh as a daisy in my mind. I can’t help thinking this is a bit of a bye for the champ, but what did anyone think was going to happen when half of the main event fell out with less than three weeks to go? It’s not like there were a ton of options, with Ronald Souza just fighting in Brazil on May 14, not to mention a possible knee injury he has to get checked out. Another potential title contender, Yoel Romero , is on the shelf until June 12, having negotiated a six-month suspension after testing positive for a banned substance in his December fight with “Jacare.” Yet another feasible contender, Lyoto Machida , is also locked up in the United States Anti-Doping Agency dungeon after admitting to taking DHEA last month. As you can see, the cupboard was pretty bare. Enter Bisping.

10 Questions for Fabricio Werdum

Reality has begun to sink in for Fabricio Werdum . Werdum surrendered the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title in a knockout loss to Stipe Miocic at UFC 198 on May 14 in Curitiba, Brazil. The defeat snapped a six-fight winning streak for “Vai Cavalo,” who was felled by a right hook from the backpedaling Miocic 2:47 into round one at Arena de Baixada. Having returned to his home in Los Angeles, Werdum has since started the process of picking up the pieces. In this exclusive interview with Sherdog.com, the 38-year-old former champion made no excuses regarding his first loss since 2011, reiterated his hope for an immediate rematch and put forth his belief that his being dethroned was good for the heavyweight division: Sherdog.com: Right after your defeat, many people accused you of having lost focus against Miocic. They said you were more concerned with handing out “happy face” masks, paying homage to Ayrton Senna and having your mother at Octagonside for the first time. Do you think all those external forces were harmful to you? Werdum: A lot of people criticized me, saying I did a lot of clowning and forgot about the fight, but as I said before, that’s my way.

This Video’s Hilarious Takedown Of Annoying Facebook Statuses Is Too Perfect

Have you ever met someone in real life, thought he or she seemed normal enough, and friended them on Facebook only to find out they’re one of THEM ? You know what we’re talking about — the wannabe singer/rapper, the Crossfit devotee, that one girl who just posts inspirational Marilyn Monroe quotes, the oversharing couple that needs to get a (virtual) room, the #blessed humble bragger, the ranter, that creepy dude who liked your picture from four years ago, the Farmville lover — all of those friends who should maybe just log off and call it a day. This video from comedian Jason Horton’s YouTube series Facebook in Real Life absolutely slays us with a perfect takedown of all of the annoying statuses we’ve come across. Could you imagine if the way we all behaved online was the same as how we acted IRL?

Opinion: Heavyweight Gold and Short-Term Memory

Stipe Miocic is the man of the hour. The 33-year-old returned home to Cleveland, Ohio, with the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight title in hand after knocking out Fabricio Werdum in the UFC 198 main event on May 14. Miocic now resumes his double life, with a twist. Instead of being a firefighter and aspiring UFC contender, he is a firefighter and the “Baddest Man on the Planet,” courtesy of his newly seized heavyweight crown. While Miocic’s blue-collar story should endear him to domestic audiences and beyond, it should not put new paint on the fact that high-level mixed martial artists, including those in the UFC, still hold day jobs and must rely on alternate incomes. It’s a reality the UFC omits whenever possible. Knowing the guy in the main event also works door security at a bar isn’t a hot selling point. Miocic is the exception, with his noble firefighting pursuits. Look at the UFC’s top stars: Conor McGregor and Ronda Rousey . McGregor’s popularity comes from his lavish life as champion and persona as a cutthroat businessman.

Sherdog Prospect Watch: Lowen Tynanes

Hawaii has been a traditional hotbed for mixed martial arts talent, and the state may have found its newest star in lightweight Lowen Tynanes . The unbeaten prospect pushed his record to 9-0 with another dominating performance inside the Singapore-based One Championship organization on April 15, as he took a unanimous decision from Sengoku and Road Fighting Championship veteran Koji Ando . The 31-year-old Ando had won six of his previous seven bouts, losing only to Shinya Aoki . Tynanes used his wrestling skills to gather takedowns and sharp leg kicks to pick apart his opponent at One Championship 41. “That was my game plan and I followed it,” Tynanes told Sherdog.com, “but I wanted to finish him, though.” The 25-year-old Hawaiian has won all five of his fights in One Championship and appears to be knocking on the door to a title shot. Aoki currently holds the promotion’s lightweight crown and has not lost a fight in more than four years. “I want to fight the champion, for sure,” Tynanes said. “I’ve been wanting a title fight, and I feel like I earned it.

Boxing: Charlo Brothers Prepared to Claim Piece of History

Some of the best fights involving Jermall and Jermell Charlo were never seen. That’s because those fights were verbal barbs between themselves, always one cajoling and pushing the other. They are on the verge of doing something never done before -- twin brothers holding every major junior middleweight title in existence. Jermall (23-0, 18 KOs) already has the IBF belt, which he will defend against Austin Trout (30-2, 17 KOs), while Jermell (27-0, 12 KOs) will take on John Jackson for the vacant WBC 154-pound title. The twins will be two-thirds of the Showtime junior middleweight title tripleheader on Saturday at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. Jermall will have the toughest task but feels he knows how to fight Trout. He has received advice from Erislandy Lara , who beat Trout in 2013. “Personally, all of the awards and being great and doing all of the things we have to do, we were planning on making history regardless when we started our careers,” Jermall said. “I want to put any pressure on my brother, and I want to help him make history. We always work on putting pressure on each other to make ourselves better, but I have to worry about what I have to do; and I’ll let Jermell put his focus on Jackson.

He’ll try to stick and move and try to kick out Nate’s front leg and try to take his shots. Andrei Arlovski vs. Josh Barnett to Headline UFC Fight Night Hamburg on Sept. 3

Veteran heavyweights Andrei Arlovski and Josh Barnett will top the bill when the Ultimate Fighting Championship makes its debut in Hamburg, Germany. The five-round matchup was announced by the promotion on Monday. UFC Fight Night “Arlovski vs. Barnett” takes place Sept. 3 at Hamburg’s Barclaycard Arena; the show will also feature a light heavyweight contest between Ryan Bader and Ilir Latifi . Despite nearly 40 years and 80 bouts of experience between them, longtime heavyweight rankers Arlovski and Barnett have never come face to face. The matchup was briefly scheduled for Affliction “Day of Reckoning” in 2009, but Barnett ultimately wound up fighting Gilbert Yvel on that card, while Arlovski would go up against Fedor Emelianenko . Arlovski, 37, has hit a skid in 2016, with back-to-back knockout losses ending a fairytale run which brought the Belarusian to the brink of title contention. “The Pit Bull” was punched out in 54 seconds by Stipe Miocic in January and then stopped by Alistair Overeem in the second round of their May 8 encounter.

Fabricio Werdum, Ben Rothwell Added to September UFC 203 Card in Cleveland

Another pivotal heavyweight clash has been added to Sept. 10’s UFC 203 bill in Cleveland. Headlined by new UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic ’s first defense against Alistair Overeem , the card will also feature Fabricio Werdum versus Ben Rothwell . The promotion revealed the pairing Sunday night during FS1's UFC Fight Night “Almeida vs. Garbrandt” broadcast. Werdum (20-6) lost the heavyweight title to Miocic on May 14 at UFC 198 via first-round knockout. The 38-year-old has never dropped back-to-back fights in a career that has spanned 14 years. Rothwell, 36-10, will also hope to bounce back from defeat as he was handedly outpointed by Junior dos Santos on April 10 at UFC Fight Night “Rothwell vs. Dos Santos.” The loss put an end to a four-fight winning streak that saw the Wisconsin native become the first man to submit Josh Barnett and a knockout of the aforementioned Overeem.

Mamed Khalidov Retains Middleweight Title with Bizarre Performance in KSW 35 Headliner

Mamed Khalidov was successful in his first Kontrontacja Sztuk Walki middleweight title defense, but it was hardly a vintage performance. Khalidov (32-4-2) defeated Aziz Karaoglu (9-7) via majority decision in the KSW 35 headliner at the Ergo Arena in Gdansk, Poland, on Friday, extending his winning streak to 12 straight fights. Two judges scored the bout 29-28 for the 35-year-old champion, while a third submitted a 28-28 scorecard. However, he barely resembled the fighter regarded by many as one of the top talents outside the UFC. It was a bout that saw referee Marc Goddard warn Khalidov for timidity in the third round after the champion spent much of the contest flopping to his back in hopes of drawing his opponent into his guard. For the most part, Karaoglu ignored the invitations, which disrupted the rhythm of the fight as Goddard was forced to repeatedly call for one standup after another. However, Khalidov likely did enough work in the first and second frames to cement the victory. He successfully executed a single-leg takedown in round one and escaped a guillotine before moving to mount and then taking his foe’s back before the horn sounded.

Bobby Brents Wins Bellator Contract, Retains Heavyweight Title at Shamrock FC ‘Aftershock’

Bobby Brents retained his Shamrock Fighting Championships heavyweight title on Saturday night. In doing so, the “Zombie” also became the newest addition to the Bellator MMA roster. Brents put his belt on the line against challenger Shane Grant in the main event of Shamrock FC “Aftershock” at Ameristar Casino Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri. The winner of the bout was guaranteed a Bellator contract ; both men fought as if they wanted the deal, producing an old-fashioned heavyweight slobber-knocker. After beginning the fight with a see-saw slugfest, both men looked to be fading early in the second round. Grant absorbed a hellacious barrage of strikes -- thumping punches and chopping leg kicks -- and looked to turn the tide when he pushed Brents against the fence. Brents found a second wind, however, and stunned “Bubba” with an uppercut-right hand combination. Grant was out on his feet as Brents teed off with a dozen or more unanswered punches, sending referee Mike England in for the stoppage at 3:38 of round two. Asked to sum up his feelings on being a Bellator fighter, Brents kept it succinct: “It’s about damn time.

Joshua Burkman: UFC-Reebok Deal ‘Cleans Up’ MMA, ‘Makes It More Professional’

The one-year anniversary of the UFC ’s official implementation of the Reebok-sponsored outfitting policy is fast approaching, and at least lately, the outcry regarding the deal seems to have subsided. Of course, the second half of 2015 brought enough bad reviews and embarrassing miscues to last a lifetime for the much-maligned partnership. A little bit of peace and quiet on the sponsorship front is probably welcome, both for the promotion and the apparel company. Joshua Burkman , for one, thinks the long-term ramifications of the deal will benefit all involved. While many fighters have lamented the sponsorship dollars that they have lost in the past year, “The People’s Warrior” believes the outfitting policy will allow him to focus on what really matters: the fights. “My situation is a little different than most fighters. I say that because I manage myself and I have for the majority of my career,” Burkman said during an appearance on the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show . “There are things about that that I really like.

Tyron Woodley Denies That He Was Waiting on a Title Shot During Lengthy Layoff

By the time Tyron Woodley steps into the Octagon to face Robbie Lawler for the welterweight title at UFC 201 on July 30, it will have been 546 days since his last promotional appearance. Since Woodley garnered a split-decision against an overweight Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 182 in January 2015, Lawler has defended his title in a pair of “Fight of the Year” candidates, Stephen Thompson has emerged as a serious contender in the division, Demian Maia is on a roll again and Neil Magny has solidified himself as a Top 10 talent by going 5-1. So in short, a lot has happened since “The Chosen One” last showcased his talent in the cage. The extended absence wasn’t entirely Woodley’s fault: He was slated to face Johny Hendricks at UFC 192 this past October, but that matchup was canceled when “Bigg Rigg” was hospitalized due to weight-cutting issues. Sometime shortly thereafter, it was reported that Woodley would receive the next 170-pound title shot for his troubles. Eventually that promise came true -- it just took a little longer than some people might have liked.
