The Bottom Line: Common Concerns

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. When Alistair Overeem and Andrei Arlovski meet in the UFC Fight Night 87 main event this Sunday in Rotterdam, Netherlands, it will be a matchup between perhaps the two fighters in the history of the sport whose fates have been most dictated by their chins. When their chins have held up, they have both risen to the top of the sport and had extended success. When their chins have failed them, they have looked like they could lose to practically anyone with decent striking power. MMA by its nature is a sport where fate can turn in an instant. Unlike in most sports where mistakes can be overcome over the course of a game, in MMA, one mistake can negate everything else that happened in a mere split second. The knockout is the most violent and sudden reminder of this reality, something that all fighters need to be aware of in their preparation and at all times in the fight.

‘TUF 23’ Recap: Episode 3

This week’s episode begins with J.J. Aldrich training alongside Joanna Jedrzejczyk and her other coaches, prepping for her fight with Tatiana Suarez . Jedrzejczyk calls Suarez a beast and is super excited to see her fight, but she understands how important is the outcome of matchup. There appears to be a sense of doubt in the voice and body language of the UFC women’s strawweight champion when she speaks, though she’s saying the right things to the camera. Meanwhile, Helen Harper is rolling with Ashley Yoder , and when Yoder gets mount, she pulls off a straight armbar. However, before she is able to tap out, Harper’s right elbow pops. She’s hurt but sucking it up, trying to fight through it. On top of it all, she still sounds like utter crap thanks to her bronchitis. Naturally, Harper is frustrated and emotional, on the verge of a breakdown. Jedrzejczyk is there for her, sitting next to her and coaching the contestant through her turmoil, but the head coach seems a little irritated at what could be looked at as weakness. Team Claudia is training next, and Suarez is explaining to viewers that she was the top-ranked female in freestyle wrestling when she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in 2011.

Miesha Tate explains frustration with Conor McGregor over UFC 200 exit

"The day that the commercial was supposed to be filmed, it was supposed to be that myself, Amanda (Nunes), Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo had to film two segments for this commercial and the main event had to film two segments plus one more segment, which is the highlight of the commercial, which is the main event," Tate explained. "Well because the main event didn't show up, they literally begged me when I showed up that morning, they begged me, meaning the producers of the commercial, begged me to come back and it's like, 'Can you please come back later today and film this third segment?' Well that third segment happened to be right over my practice time, my pro practice at my gym, which I didn't want to miss. But obviously they were hurting so bad and they were basically on their knees like, 'We need this segment of the commercial and we don't have the main event now so we have to film it with you guys and see how it all comes together.'

Amir Khan Likes His Chances Against ‘McGregor or Whoever’ in Future MMA Bout

Amir Khan will have his hands full when he takes on Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in a WBC middleweight title bout in Las Vegas on Saturday, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t at least considered combat sport endeavors of a different nature. A little bit further down the road, the British boxer might be interested in trying his hand at mixed martial arts. “You never know what will happen in the future -- I’d never say no to getting into MMA,” Khan told the Daily Star . “My speed would be perfect, it’s hit and move. And I can kick hard. “I’ve already done MMA training. It’s good for preparing to fight a guy like Canelo who likes to put the pressure on.” Khan already has a stake in the India-based MMA promotion Super Fight League, which has held 59 events since its inception in March 2012. Khan will face Alvarez at 160 pounds on Saturday, but it appears as though he would like to compete at 145 pounds in MMA, possibly against current UFC featherweight champ Conor McGregor . “I’ve always been a UFC fan, and I like McGregor,” Khan said. “But if I was to fight the champion around 147 pounds I would fancy my chances.

Maldonado: Fighting Fedor Will Be Like Playing 1-on-1 Against Michael Jordan

Fabio Maldonado was released by the UFC in December after losing three of his last four bouts, but the Brazilian fighter has no reason to be upset. Scheduled to face all-time great Fedor Emelianenko on June 17 in Russia, Maldonado recently spoke with Sherdog.com about his return to the heavyweight division. “I’ve always competed in boxing at 105 kilos [231 pounds]. It was hard for me to reach the limit of the light heavyweight division,” said Maldonado, who spent most of his UFC tenure at 205 pounds. “I’ll feel much more comfortable facing Fedor at my natural weight.” Maldonado was slated to meet Felipe Diego Dantas de Oliveira at this weekend’s 1st Round Combat event in Natal, Brazil, but an injury forced “Caipira de Aco” to withdraw from the bout. “Actually, I’ve had this cervical spine injury since 2007. I already left a fight against Aaron Rosa in 2011 due to protrusions on the C5, C6 and C7 vertebrae. But, last week, I had an emergency and, after doing an MRI, the doctor said I should do 10 days of physical therapy,” explained Maldonado.

Opinion: What if Khan Beats ‘Canelo?’

For months, the boxing world has been focused on a potential future meeting between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady “GGG” Golovkin . Golovkin last month kept up his momentum with yet another decimation of an overmatched opponent, this time knocking out Dominic Wade in two rounds. If Alvarez does as he is expected on Saturday and puts away Amir Khan, then the public demand for the two to clash this fall will only get louder. But what happens if Khan beats Canelo? It’s a scenario most fans and pundits haven’t even considered. The majority of boxing media find this fight to be an exhibition of sorts, a chance for Alvarez to pound out the undersized Khan and add another name to his résumé. But it’s not outside the realm of possibility that Khan could pull off the upset. While it would be a major shock to the boxing world, the effects would ripple outside of just these two fighters. First of all, Khan would become the WBC, Ring and lineal middleweight titleholder. To put that in perspective, a guy who campaigns at 147 pounds could capture the world titles at 160 pounds while facing an opponent at 155 pounds.

Every Wednesday, Administrative Editor Jordan Breen welcomes a member of the mixed martial arts media into “Press Row” on the Sherdog.com blog. This week, Breen is joined by BloodyElbow.com writer and Pepperdine University associate economics professor Paul Gift . It takes money to make a dent in combat sports, and from the looks of things lately, some money getting thrown in MMA and boxing is highly questionable. This week, Breen and Gift break down a number of evolving stories with legal and economic impact in the ring and cage, including World Series of Fighting's continued financial hardships and corporate shake-ups, plus the bizarre ongoing, role of former matchmaker Ali Abdelaziz , as well as Ronda Rousey 's trainer Edmond Tarverdyan , his ongoing tax case and his laughable claim of $3300 in assets. Breen and Gift also break down the biggest recent story as it relates to prizefighting, tackling the news that Al Haymon's Premier Boxing Champions venture secured $925 million in capital, then after spending hundreds of millions of dollars, hired the investment manager who gave him the money as his company's Chief Operating Officer.

Coach: Weight Cut Cris Cyborg’s Biggest Battle Ahead of UFC 198

If all goes as planned, Cristiane Justino ’s Octagon debut could lay the foundation for a long-term future in the Ultimate Fighting Championship . Jason Parillo, Justino’s boxing coach, believes that an impressive showing by Justino against Leslie Smith at UFC 198 might plant the seed for a 145-pound division in the Las Vegas-based promotion. The May 14 bout between “Cyborg” and Smith will be at 140-pound catch-weight, however, and even that cut could prove difficult for the Brazilian knockout artist. “Our biggest opponent I think is the scale,” Parillo said during an appearance on the Sherdog Radio Network’s "TJ and the Tooth” show. “When the crowd sees that energy that Cris brings into the cage and the ability to finish the fight at any given moment, it’s so exciting to watch. I’m hoping it’ll open doors to the idea of a 145-pound division. “Cris is doing a great job. She’s working with George Lockhart , spending day in and day out making the weight cut…We don’t want to get into Leslie’s fight, some type of brawl, ugly style fight,” he added.

Boxing: ‘Canelo’ Alvarez Has Some Work Ahead of Him

Boxing rarely lives in the moment. It’s a sport -- and a media covering the sport -- that likes to venture into all of the possibilities ahead. But it’s Saul “Canelo” Alvarez who will draw you back to the task at hand. The WBC middleweight titlist will remind you that he has a big fight coming up this Saturday on HBO pay-per-view against the smaller Amir Khan, which will take place at Las Vegas’ newly minted, 20,000-seat T-Mobile Arena. He’ll remind you that he’s in no great hurry for a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr., or a possible fight with Gennady “GGG” Golovkin this fall. He’ll remind you that, despite Khan jumping two weight classes, he’s still faced with a very tough task. Alvarez is 25 and sees a void out there, the need for a new face of boxing since Mayweather announced his retirement last September. Whether “Money” remains retired is anyone’s guess, but for now, Alvarez once again finds his red head at the hub of the sport. An impressive route of Khan, who said he would give Canelo a “boxing lesson,” can put Alvarez where he yearns to be.

Holm vs. Shevchenko, ‘Rumble’ vs. Teixeira in Works for UFC on Fox 20

A bantamweight headliner between Holly Holm and Valentina Shevchenko is in the works for the UFC on Fox 20 headliner, according to a report from UFC Tonight. The July 23 card is also expected to include a light heavyweight showdown pitting Anthony Johnson against Glover Teixeira , as well as a previously reported lightweight tilt between Edson Barboza and Gilbert Melendez . UFC on Fox 20 takes place at the United Center in Chicago and airs on the Fox Network. Holm recently relinquished the 135-pound belt to Miesha Tate at UFC 196, falling victim to a rear-naked choke 3:30 into the fifth round on March 5. The Jackson-Wink MMA standout captured the bantamweight crown with a second-round knockout of Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 in November. Shevchenko saw a five-fight winning streak come to an end at UFC 196, where she dropped a unanimous verdict to current No. 1 contender Amanda Nunes . The Lima, Peru, native debuted in the Octagon with a split-decision triumph over Sarah Kaufman at UFC on Fox 17. Johnson has won two straight fights since falling to Daniel Cormier at UFC 187 in a bout for the vacant light heavyweight strap.

Opinion: The Costs of Control

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Over the weekend, a video surfaced of UFC President Dana White giving a business seminar at Stanford University. In the clip, White discussed why he believed boxing is declining while MMA is on the rise . To him, it’s simple: “[Boxing] has become so greedy. Nobody was ever thinking about the future of the sport. It’s about how much money we can we all put in our pocket right here right now.” White expounded by posing a hypothetical scenario in which everyone in the room was guaranteed to earn $37 million that year, no matter what: “Guess what you’re gonna do? Not much.” In contrast, the Ultimate Fighting Championship incentivizes its fighters with bonuses, which in turn encourage fighters to perform better. For most fighters, the pay structure is a mixture of a guaranteed fight purse, a bonus for winning and potential bonuses for finishes and performances of the night.

Titan FC Signs Jessica Aguilar as Matchmaker for New Women’s Divisions

Florida-based MMA promotion Titan Fighting Championship has signed UFC and Bellator veteran Jessica Aguilar to handle matchmaking duties for its newly-minted women’s divisions. According to a promotion official, there will be multiple women's weight classes in Titan FC. Exactly which ones will be implemented has not yet been determined. The news comes on the heels of Titan FC’s announcement on Thursday that it has signed Strikeforce veteran Carina Damm as its first female fighter. Damm will make her promotional debut at Titan FC 39 on June 10; now it’s up to Aguilar to find her a suitable opponent. Aguilar, who holds two wins over all-time great Megumi Fujii as well as victory over Carla Esparza , is excited to take on the role of matchmaker. “I'm really excited for the opportunity to perform in a different role as the sport of women's MMA continues to grow,” Aguilar said. “I feel that as a pioneer of this sport, I can bring my own personal experiences and wisdom to female matchmaking and put together really exciting fights for the fans.

Opinion: Debunking the Myth of Heavyweight Exceptionalism

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. Wednesday was the 15-year anniversary of UFC 31 -- the second Ultimate Fighting Championship event for the promotion under Zuffa ownership and the new company’s first great one. Most MMA fights, regardless of promotional banner or fighters involved, don’t hold up in 2016 after a decade and a half of crucial technical and athletic evolution, but UFC 31 does across the board. B.J. Penn ’s brilliant MMA debut? Check. Matt Lindland characteristically gaming the system, dropping to a knee while Ricardo Almeida upkicked him and eventually getting “The Big Dog” disqualified in shambolic fashion? Check. Semmy Schilt front kicking Pete Williams in the liver? It’s in there. Shonie Carter puts the spinning back fist on the map as a legit technique against Matt Serra , while Carlos Newton does the same for the humble bulldog choke, taking the UFC welterweight title from Pat Miletich in an upset.

Kickboxing: Tiffany Van Soest Gets Another New Opponent for Glory 30

Glory 30 goes down May 13 at Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California, and will be broadcast on both UFC Fight Pass and ESPN3, though the event hasn’t been without a few roster changes along the way. Also penciled in for the event is a four-man, one-night welterweight tournament. MMA’s Greats of the States | Kansas: David Rickels

Mixed martial artists come from every corner of the globe, bearing a variety of styles. Sometimes, fighters are products of their environment, favoring disciplines prevalent in the country or state from which they hail. Various regions of the United States are considered factories for great fighters, though that certainly is not the case with each state. In this weekly Sherdog.com series, the spotlight will shine on the best mixed martial artist of all-time from each of the 50 states. Fighters do not necessarily need to be born in a given state to represent it; they simply need to be associated with it. For example, reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight titleholder Robbie Lawler may have been born in San Diego, but few would recognize him as a Californian. *** Kansas is known for its open fields, supercell thunderstorms and college basketball, but a number of top-level mixed martial artists call “The Sunflower State” home. Some of them have made their way into the UFC, Bellator MMA and Strikeforce over the years, including David Rickels .
