Conor McGregor: 5 Defining Moments

The instant Conor McGrgeor graced the Ultimate Fighting Championship with his presence it became clear he was a different kind of animal. His performances since have only served to drive home the point. McGregor has compiled a 9-1 record under the UFC flag, captured championships in two weight classes and emerged as the company’s brightest star and biggest box-office draw. The 28-year-old former two-division Cage Warriors Fighting Championship titleholder has gone the distance just twice in 10 appearances inside the Octagon, all while posting victories over Marcus Brimage , Diego Brandao , Dustin Poirier , Dennis Siver and others. As he sits on the UFC lightweight throne, McGregor has cast his eyes toward greener pastures and a potential $100 million payday against boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr. While the two men continue to tease audiences with the thought of a landmark super fight between boxing and MMA superstars, McGregor can rest easy knowing he has already cemented his place as a historical figure in mixed martial arts. In a transcendent career bursting at the seams with defining moments, here are five that stand out: 1.

‘TUF 25’ Recap: Episode 3

Mehdi Baghdad from Season 22 opens the show talking to the viewing audience and telling everybody that he is the best on the show, how much he’s changed since his first stint on the reality series and how excited he is to be fighting Jesse Taylor by show’s end. Coach Cody Garbrandt is pumped up about how his pupil has been training and he’s confident that the Frenchman will prevail. Season 7’s Taylor is at the house, reliving his buffoonery on how he got kicked off the show. The drunken hooliganism was out of control and at first, he doesn’t seem to be too remorseful for how he much of an ass he was. Highlights of Ultimate Fighting Championship President Dana White booting him off the show before he fought in the finals run next and Taylor admits that it was a tough pill to swallow in his efforts to get back to the UFC. After the first commercial break, Baghdad is at the house the next day and he reveals that he and Taylor used to train together back in the day at Team Quest . Baghdad is even more confident on camera that he can beat “Coco the Monkey” before clips of his original stint in the house run.

Ricardo Abreu Retires After Receiving 4-Year Suspension for Second Anti-Doping Violation

Two-time UFC competitor Ricardo Abreu has elected to retire after receiving a four-year suspension from USADA for a second failed drug test within a six-month period. According to a statement from USADA, Abreu “tested positive for 19-norandrosterone (19-NA), the main urinary metabolite of nandrolone (19-nortestosterone) and other 19-norsteroids, above the decision limit of 3.4 ng/mL following an out-of-competition urine test conducted on December 21, 2016. In accordance with standard practice, the exogenous, or non-natural, origin of the 19-NA was further confirmed by sophisticated carbon isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS) analysis, which can reveal the presence of synthetic anabolic agents. In this case, the GC/C/IRMS analysis result was consistent with the exogenous origin of 19-NA. Anabolic Agents, including 19-NA, are non-Specified Substances prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, which has adopted the WADA Prohibited List.” After being informed of his positive test on Feb. 1, Abreu announced his retirement.

Frankie Perez, Chris Wade to Clash at UFC on Fox 25 in Long Island

Frankie Perez will square off against Chris Wade in a lightweight bout at UFC on Fox 25 . Newsday first reported the pairing. UFC on Fox 25 takes place at Nassau Coliseum in Long Island, N.Y., on July 22 and also includes a light heavyweight showdown pitting Gian Villante against Patrick Cummins . A headliner for the card has not been announced. Perez and Wade initially fought at Ring of Combat 48 in May 2014, with Wade earning a split-decision triumph. Perez announced his retirement after stopping Sam Stout in 54 seconds at UFC Fight Night 74 in August 2015 but returned to the Octagon this past December, when he dropped a unanimous decision to Marc Diakiese . Perez is 10-3 as a professional overall, with seven victories coming by knockout, technical knockout or submission. Wade, meanwhile, has lost back-to-back fights after winning his first four Octagon appearances. Most recently, the 29-year-old Long Island native suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Islam Makhachev at UFC Fight Night 94 this past September. Wade owns an 11-3 career mark, including seven wins via decision.

Oscar de la Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. Rivals Again, This Time Outside the Ring

Oscar de la Hoya and Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. might not be climbing into the ring on Saturday night to dust off their gloves and throw punches again, but their deep-rooted rivalry isn’t exactly taking a back seat to the featured attraction. Saul Alvarez will be taking on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in the main event of an HBO Pay-Per-View mega event in Las Vegas, but it’s hard not to think of Oscar and the elder Julio’s past battles. When De la Hoya, who eventually captured world titles in six different weight classes en route to enshrinement in the International Boxing Hall of Fame, was a rising star in the sport, his path crossed with Chavez Sr. It was the perfect matchup of polar opposites: a grizzled legend beloved by millions upon millions of rabid Mexican fight fans near the end of his Hall of Fame career taking on de la Hoya, a talented knockout artist with striking good looks and never-ending charisma. Chavez was a true Mexican through and through while de la Hoya was American; he was hated by most boxing fans but desired by millions upon millions of women. The two first locked horns in 1996 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and “The Golden Boy” tore Chavez up.

LFA 11 Weigh-in Results: Matthew Frincu, Late Replacement Maicon Mendonca on Point

Legacy Fighting Alliance is slated to electrify Comerica Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona, Friday night with a stellar middleweight encounter as the headliner, but even with an injury to a key fighter on the marquee, it’s all systems go. Middleweight contender Daniel Madrid suffered an injury heading into his final days of pre-fight prep and had to be pulled from the card. Madrid’s opponent, Matthew Frincu , is a natural welterweight and cut back down to his more comfortable 170 pounds to remain in the main event. Stepping in at the last minute to oppose Frincu is Maicon Mendonca , who was already fighting on the card. With all of the turmoil behind the promotion, Thursday’s weigh-ins went off without a hitch. Mendonca stepped to the scale and nailed it; he came in at 167.1 pounds. Not to be outdone, Frincu checked in at 170.5 pounds, giving the event the expected green light. LFA 11 will begin its broadcast coverage on AXS TV beginning at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. LFA 11 Weigh-in Results: Matthew Frincu (170.5) vs. Maicon Mendonca (167.1) James Nakashima (169.

‘TUF 26’ to Crown Inaugural UFC Women’s Flyweight Champion

“The Ultimate Fighter 26” will introduce the women’s flyweight division and crown a champion at the conclusion of its season. The Las Vegas-based promotion announced the news in a release on Wednesday. The UFC will hold a casting call on May 23 in Las Vegas open to female flyweights between ages of 21 to 34 with a winning professional record. “TUF 26” will also be open to women currently on the roster who are capable of making 125 pounds over the course of the season. A previously announced tryout for “TUF 26” was to include women’s strawweights and bantamweights as well as men’s middleweights. That tryout, which was also announced for May 23, has been canceled, according to the release. “TUF 26” will begin filming in July and will premiere on Fox Sports 1 later this year. “TUF 25” is currently airing on FS1 and will conclude at the “TUF 25” finale in Las Vegas on July 7. The UFC currently has three women’s weight classes: bantamweight, strawweight and the recently created featherweight division. The promotion held its first-ever women’s flyweight bout at UFC Fight Night 89 in June 2016 between Valerie Letourneau and Joanne Calderwood .

Undefeated lightweight Justin Gaethje announces he's signed with the UFC | FOX Sports

Thank you for all the support to this point, I signed my contract with the UFC yesterday. It feels good to know the sacrifices my family and I have made since starting wrestling at 4 yrs old, have led us to these great endeavors. My parents spent their hard earned money, love, and energy to ensure I got the chance to put this hard work to fruition and I'll be damned if I don't give it 100%. Now I get a chance to fight and be the best in the world at something. It won't last long and I may or may not be successful, but I do know I would not be here without having parents which showed me through their actions that hard work is not easy, who loved and believed in me everyday. #ufc #mma #hardwork #fight

Amanda Nunes-Valentina Shevchenko Title Bout Targeted for UFC 213 in Las Vegas

Amanda Nunes will defend her bantamweight crown in a rematch against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 213 on July 8. Multiple outlets have confirmed that Nunes and Shevchenko have agreed to terms following an initial report by Talk MMA on Twitter. The UFC has not officially announced the bout. UFC 213 takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and also includes another 135-pound championship clash, as Cody Garbrandt defends his strap against T.J. Dillashaw . Nunes and Shevchenko first fought a UFC 196, with Nunes capturing a unanimous decision triumph. “Lioness” then claimed bantamweight gold with a first-round submission of Miesha Tate at UFC 200 and defended the title with a 48-second stoppage of Ronda Rousey at UFC 206 this past December. The 28-year-old Brazilian has won seven of her last eight fights and is 14-4 as a professional overall. After falling to Nunes, Shevchenko took a decision over ex-champ Holly Holm at UFC on Fox 20 and submitted top contender Julianna Pena at UFC on Fox 23 in her next two outings. “Bullet” owns a 14-2 professional mark and has finished 10 of those triumphs by knockout, technical knockout or submission.

Addition of Women’s Flyweight Division to UFC Not Official, Despite Announcement

The women’s flyweight division hasn’t found a home in the UFC just yet. The Las Vegas-based promotion announced on Wednesday evening that “The Ultimate Fighter 26” would launch the women’s flyweight division and crown an inaugural champion at the conclusion of the season. However, UFC President Dana White later told Yahoo Sports that the release was sent in error and the promotion had not finalized the addition of a 125-pound female weight class. Although the UFC had not retracted its original release via email as of Thursday morning, the announcement was removed from the organization’s website. Multiple outlets have since confirmed White’s comments. The addition of a flyweight division would give the UFC four female weight classes. The promotion added a women’s featherweight division to bantamweight and strawweight earlier this year. Germaine de Randamie claimed the inaugural 145-pound crown with a decision win over Holly Holm at UFC 208. Although the weight classes it will feature remains unclear, “TUF 26” is scheduled to begin filming in July and will debut on Fox Sports 1 later this year.

‘Canelo’ Alvarez Focused on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Not Potential Bout vs. ‘GGG’

Saul Alvarez, or “Canelo” as he is best known, is set to headline the biggest fight card in Las Vegas this year when he faces Mexican rival Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in a bout that will anchor an HBO pay-per-view event at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night. However, it’s not the fight that boxing fans want. What they desire is for “Canelo” to climb into the ring against undisputed middleweight world champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Alvarez and his camp -- along with promoter Oscar de la Hoya -- have been quick to either change the subject or give the typical response that the only fighter he’s focused on is Chavez. Though most experts expect Alvarez to win, the fight is more intriguing than it appears on the outside. Aside from the fact that it’s two highly-publicized boxers fighting on Cinco de Mayo weekend, which has long been the biggest fight weekend of the year, it’s a duel between two young lions who don’t like each other. “Chavez, Jr. has gotten to this point because of his name; he lacks the discipline to be the best,” Alvarez said in the days leading up to their fight.

Opinion: No One Will Save You But You (and Other Modern Octagon Tips)

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * We're still amid what has become a routine, seasonal MMA occurrence, albeit an informal one: When the Ultimate Fighting Championship goes a couple weeks without a major event and gives some of its staff a bit of a reprieve. With UFC 211 ( online sportsbooks ) coming up on May 13 in Dallas, this is the theoretical calm before the storm. I say theoretical because everyone in the UFC seems to making noise except for the promotion itself. Since Al Iaquinta broke his two-year retirement on April 22 in Nashville, Tennessee, and clattered Diego Sanchez in 98 seconds, he has been the most talked-about fighter in the sport during a time without seemingly much to talk about. Perhaps that changed on Wednesday, when Nate Diaz made an appearance on “The MMA Hour” with Ariel Helwani, delivering an hour of his characteristically recalcitrant charm. While he was as irreverent as ever, Diaz's screed was also a sharp, penetrating manifesto for the modern MMA fighter.
