Social Justice and the Socially Unjust Attacks on Joss Whedon

Anger over Whedon’s portrayal of Black Widow in Age of Ultron is misplaced for starters, as Natasha Romanoff was an extremely sexual and flirty character in the comics. This is not an intrinsically bad thing. For starters – sex isn’t bad. Sexuality is also not bad. I can’t believe I even have to say this, yet here I am, having to say it. Anger over a director of an adaptation film not changing the entire dynamic of a key character’s personality is not only ridiculous, it also shows both the critic’s lack of exposure to the prior work as well as the inability of the critic to rationally evaluate complex and imperfect characters. In fact, I would go as far as to say that in my opinion Romanoff was given the most attention in character development of any of the characters featured in the film. Sexism!

Josh Barnett, Submission Flow: Jiu-Jitsu Magazine, Issue #32.

Way before the public knew of him, Josh Barnett usually found himself in a fight. Finding wrestling in high school, he fell in love with the sport in all of it's many facets and is a true ambassador of the catch as can style. Most people assume that his background stops there, but nothing could be further from the truth, as we found out while on this photo shoot for Issue 32. A true student of martial arts, Josh is more than well versed in the understanding and techniques of Greco-roman, freestyle, laamb, professional, and any other style of wrestling that you can think of; not to mention he has a plethora of knowledge in sambo, judo, jiu-jitsu (black belt), and a slew of other martial arts. Josh has taken all the knowledge he's gathered over the years, molded all of it together and began his MMA career nicknamed as The Baby Face Assassin, but after all his victories (including a stint as the UFC Heavyweight Champion) through the top organizations has graduated to The War Master. Meet the Iraqi Jon Stewart Who Ridicules the Islamic State for a Living | VICE | United States

I met the men who founded the television series, host Ahmad Al-Basheer and executive producer Hussam Hadi, at their office in the Jordanian capital of Amman. Ahmad, a household name in Iraq, was dressed in a flannel shirt, his thicket of chest hair poking through—a slightly different look to his dapper onscreen persona. A former news correspondent and political TV show host, Ahmad switched to comedy after realizing that traditional news wasn't the best way to engage an audience. Greased hair and a cigarette constantly on his lip, Hussam has worked his way up to owning a successful production company that makes cartoons and children shows for Iraqi television.

Fighters respond to the official UFC Reebok payscale on Twitter

The UFC's Reebok sponsorship deal got one step closer to reality today, with the release of the planned payment tiers for fighters. Just recently, the UFC announced that they were shifting from a planned ranking based system to a new tiered plan based on tenure. The more fighters fight for Zuffa promotions, the more they get paid. But just how much getting paid would entail wasn't public knowledge, until today. Now the word is out on the new UFC tiers which promise a minimum of $2,500 for fighters with 1-5 fights, and $40,000 for champions, with everyone else falling in between.

Curtis Millender Juggled Impending Fatherhood, Training Ahead of Bellator 137

Curtis Millender had a rough Bellator debut. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com Curtis Millender knows a few things about making adjustments on the fly. It’s why, as his second son, Carter Meringo Millender, was born in the middle of his Bellator 137 camp, the California resident only took one day off from training. (He also managed to fulfill some of his interview obligations in a hospital bathroom while visiting the newest member of his family). Millender also knows a little something about trying to make adjustments in the cage, and what happens when things go wrong. Originally slated to face British striker Michael Page at Bellator 134, Millender received a change in a opponent -- and fighting style -- just a few days ahead of his Feb. 27 bout. Instead of Page, Millender would make his promotional debut against wrestler Brennan Ward . It didn’t go well: The Reign Training Center/NOC Fight Team product was stunned by a combination, then submitted via rear-naked choke just 1:37 into the welterweight contest. Although Millender claims that the last-minute alteration didn’t get inside his head, he also admits that he might not have been as focused as he should have.

UFC Execs Confirm Uniform Payouts, Believe It’s a Good Deal for Fighters

“We believe that the introduction of this outfitting policy is very beneficial for the athletes. It’s an investment we’re making as a company and we think it’s going to create long-term value for the athletes, the UFC brand and for the sport. It’s going to provide guaranteed income for each athlete for each fight, thus eliminating the burden of acquiring sponsors and ultimately having to go and try to collect payment on a per-event basis.”

Joe Rogan & Friends

“One of the most complex and exciting stand-ups working in America today.  Like an idealistic hippy stuck inside the body of a testosterone-pumped US marine.  He’s been likened to late great US comedians such as Bill Hicks and Sam Kinison, but although he exhibits a similar brand of furious indignation, his observations and revelations are entirely his own.  His angry, insightful act is an absorbing battle between his raw libertarian instincts and his refined liberal sensibilities.”   -- William Cook, The Guardian   A standup comedian for more than 20 years, Joe Rogan sells out theaters internationally with his inquisitive and intense comedic style. His comedy special “Joe Rogan: Live from the Tabernacle” was released in December 2012 via his website. Rogan previously starred in two hour long specials, “Talking Monkeys in Space” (2009) and “Joe Rogan Live” (2007), and released the CD’s “Shiny Happy Jihad” (2007) and “I’m Gonna Be Dead Someday” (2000). Demetrious Johnson Thinks UFC Did the Right Thing by Stripping Jon Jones

“Let’s not forget, the man crashed the $400,000 Bentley that the UFC bought him. I ain’t got a $400,000 dollar Bentley, but they bought him one and he crashed it. So I think they did the right thing by stripping him of his title, suspending him, and letting him take care of things that are important, which is him getting himself sober – 110-percent sober – and him focusing on life again and taking care of his family and leaving the drugs alone.

UFC Reveals Payment Tiers for Reebok Sponsorship Deal

The official figures are in for how much a UFC fighter will make under the recently-signed Reebok deal. UFC bantamweight Cody Gibson tweeted a screenshot of a promotion email revealing the multi-tiered payment plan on Wednesday, and Sherdog.com subsequently confirmed that the figures were correct with a UFC official. Fighters with one to five bouts’ experience will receive $2,500 under the tiered-payment system; those with six to 10 fights will get $5,000; 11 to 15 bouts will be paid $10,000; 16 to 20 fights earn $15,000 and fighters with 21 bouts or more Will Garner $20,000. Champions will receive $40,000, while challengers in a title bout will get $30,000. The UFC’s outfitting policy , a six-year deal worth $70 million, officially takes effect on July 6, 2015 during International Fight Week. At that time, fighters under the UFC banner will not be allowed to wear other sponsor logos at UFC events.
