The paths of two of MMA’s most accomplished heavyweight will soon
converge.
Former Dream and
Strikeforce
champion Alistair
Overeem will meet onetime
Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder Andrei
Arlovski in the UFC Fight Night 87 main event on Sunday at Ahoy
Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands. In the co-headliner, Antonio
Silva squares off with Stefan
Struve in a battle between two struggling big men. Scattered
across the rest of the lineup are a few gems, including a
welterweight showdown pitting Albert
Tumenov against Gunnar
Nelson and a light heavyweight clash pairing Nikita
Krylov with Francimar
Barroso .
Let us take a closer look at each
UFC Fight Night “Overeem vs. Arlovski” matchup, with analysis
and picks:

THE MATCHUP: At 36 and 37 years of age,
respectively, Overeem and Arlovski have been around long enough to
know for certain what works best for them. They have finished
plenty of opponents -- 36 for Overeem, 20 for Arlovski -- and been

Report: Conor McGregor, Floyd Mayweather Jr. Boxing Match in the Works
The saga continues.
British news outlet The Sun is reporting that UFC featherweight
champion Conor
McGregor and undefeated boxing legend Floyd
Mayweather Jr. are in the final stages of negotiations for a
boxing match.
According to the report, Mayweather (49-0) is set to come out of
retirement for a purse upwards of 144 million dollars, while
McGregor would earn slightly over 10 million. The bout is said to
be planned for Las Vegas, which is coincidently home turf for the
Ultimate Fighting Championship .
The UFC nor McGregor have yet to comment on the report, but it
seems extremely unlikely that the Irishman’s contract with the
mixed martial arts promoter would allow the contest to take
place.
McGregor (19-3) is currently feuding with the UFC over the
145-pound champ’s insistence on not attending a press conference to
promote his rematch with Nate Diaz . As
a result, UFC President Dana
White pulled McGregor from UFC
200 in a very public spat that aired in homes across the globe
on cable television.

10 Questions for Nikita Krylov
Nikita
Krylov was the first Ukrainian fighter to sign a contract with
the
Ultimate Fighting Championship , but the fairytale was replaced
by cold reality when UFC President Dana White criticized his
organizational debut. It came at UFC 164, where he was stopped on
punches in the third round of his battle with Soa
Palelei .
“You better not ask me about this fight,” White said. “I am ashamed
of it. Both fighters looked half-hearted and tired during the very
first minute, and both of them did not show anything. MMA fans
should not see such s--- in the UFC. It was really embarrassing.
What do you think will happen next with these guys in the
heavyweight division?”
Despite White’s disgust, Krylov was given another chance to prove
himself inside the Octagon; and he made the most of it. He knocked
out Walt
Harris with a head kick in 25 seconds at UFC on Fox 10 and then
moved to the light division. The 24-year-old has gone 3-1 since,
losing only to Ovince St.
Preux . Krylov will return to the cage at

Opinion: UFC Errs in Bypassing Desirable Rematches

To rematch or not to rematch -- that is the question.
With a Robbie
Lawler - Tyron
Woodley main event ticketed for UFC
201 , it is clear the
Ultimate Fighting Championship decided to move away from the
immediate title fight rematch in favor of bringing in new blood to
challenge for the belt. The reasons why some fights are made again
and others aren’t granted that same opportunity are quite cloudy,
and I don’t know how to feel about it.
Although we’re getting a second installment of Luke
Rockhold - Chris
Weidman , the UFC nixed a Lawler- Carlos
Condit rematch and shut down the idea of Miesha Tate
giving Holly Holm
the opportunity to reclaim the women’s bantamweight title. I
wouldn’t have had a problem with either of those fights being made
again because the alternatives simply aren’t as interesting.
Of the three potential rematches to be made -- Rockhold-Weidman,
Tate-Holm and Lawler-Condit -- the one that was actually secured
was the lowest on the totem poll of fights deserving a rematch.

Las Vegas Police Investigating Death of MMA Fighter Blas Avena as Suicide
Las Vegas police are investigating the death of mixed martial arts
fighter Blas Avena as
a possible suicide, according to a report from
TMZ.com .
Avena, 32, was reportedly found dead in his Las Vegas apartment at
11:36 a.m. local time on Wednesday.
“Arriving police and medical personnel located an adult male who
was pronounced deceased at the scene. As of now the death is being
investigated as a suicide,” a Las Vegas Metro Police Department
spokesperson told TMZ.
An autopsy was reportedly completed earlier this week but an
official cause of death won’t be revealed until more tests are
completed, according to the report.
Avena compiled an 8-7 record with one no contest over the course of
an MMA career that began in 2005. He competed against former UFC
talents such as Tiki Ghosn ,
Josh
Neer and Brock
Jardine during his professional tenure, which included brief
stints in both the WEC and Bellator MMA. Avena last appeared at
Bellator 96 on June 19, 2013, losing to troubled fighter War Machine
via first-round technical knockout.

Opinion: Debunking the Myth of Heavyweight Exceptionalism

Wednesday was the 15-year anniversary of UFC 31 -- the second
Ultimate Fighting Championship event for the promotion under
Zuffa ownership and the new company’s first great one. Most MMA
fights, regardless of promotional banner or fighters involved,
don’t hold up in 2016 after a decade and a half of crucial
technical and athletic evolution, but UFC 31 does across the
board.

Gunnar Nelson believes weight cutting should be eliminated in MMA
"I haven't heard too much about it as far as details, but I'd be behind that 100 percent," Nelson said about California's new weight cutting rules. "I think it definitely affects guys long term if you're doing it often. We've seen guys have been driven to the hospital, guys fainted and stuff like that. It's taken a few fights off cards just on the day of the weigh-ins because somebody's collapsing. It's pretty obvious that it isn't good. I think they should try to figure out ways to get rid of it.

Barlow explains, “Cain is here for what we call an experience week so we’re showing him the tools he can use. Different strength training methods, different power training methods. I’m not going to give him a whole overhaul or a 5 or 6 day a week regimen. I’m just trying to see what he has been doing and what hasn’t he been doing so he can take a few things with him.” Barlow continues, “He’s been a heavyweight title holder and has been around a long time so he doesn’t need to change his training completely. We’re just looking for the 1 or 2 percent we can add that can help him with longevity.”

I was originally introduced to Mauro Ranallo from his debut on WWE Smackdown ( my family and I have been wrestling fans since the 60s) and by following him on Twitter I found out that he and Bas Rutten had started a podcast. I had no idea who Bas Rutten was, I had little knowledge of UFC and Boxing outside of the fact that I love Ronda Rousey, regardless of her win loss record, and that Money Mayweather may be the best boxer alive. This podcast led to me learning more about Bas Rutten, UFC and boxing history, and has altogether broadened my intake of combat sports. Thank you Rutten and Ranallo and keep up the awesome work!

Why a broken jaw might be the worst injury a fighter suffers (both physically and mentally)
“You get a lot of demons to wrestle with when it happens. Especially my first one. I actually quit. I told myself, ‘This is stupid, I’m done. I don’t want to do this anymore.’ I mean, I made $600 (for the fight) and I had a $15,000 medical bill. That didn’t seem right. But I started going back into the gym, because I’m always going to be training and doing something. I started lifting weights with my mouth closed. Then I went in and hit the pads a few times. Then I got the wires off and I started training more and the next thing you know you get the itch again. That’s who we are. It’s what I know, is fighting. And when you’re like that and you put yourself around fighting, everybody gets that itch. Even the old-timers who still go to the fights, you know they wish they could still get in there. So 10 months later I fought again.”
