‘Canelo’ Alvarez Focused on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Not Potential Bout vs. ‘GGG’

Saul Alvarez, or “Canelo” as he is best known, is set to headline the biggest fight card in Las Vegas this year when he faces Mexican rival Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in a bout that will anchor an HBO pay-per-view event at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night. However, it’s not the fight that boxing fans want. What they desire is for “Canelo” to climb into the ring against undisputed middleweight world champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Alvarez and his camp -- along with promoter Oscar de la Hoya -- have been quick to either change the subject or give the typical response that the only fighter he’s focused on is Chavez. Though most experts expect Alvarez to win, the fight is more intriguing than it appears on the outside. Aside from the fact that it’s two highly-publicized boxers fighting on Cinco de Mayo weekend, which has long been the biggest fight weekend of the year, it’s a duel between two young lions who don’t like each other. “Chavez, Jr. has gotten to this point because of his name; he lacks the discipline to be the best,” Alvarez said in the days leading up to their fight.

Conor McGregor: 5 Defining Moments

The instant Conor McGrgeor graced the Ultimate Fighting Championship with his presence it became clear he was a different kind of animal. His performances since have only served to drive home the point. McGregor has compiled a 9-1 record under the UFC flag, captured championships in two weight classes and emerged as the company’s brightest star and biggest box-office draw. The 28-year-old former two-division Cage Warriors Fighting Championship titleholder has gone the distance just twice in 10 appearances inside the Octagon, all while posting victories over Marcus Brimage , Diego Brandao , Dustin Poirier , Dennis Siver and others. As he sits on the UFC lightweight throne, McGregor has cast his eyes toward greener pastures and a potential $100 million payday against boxing great Floyd Mayweather Jr. While the two men continue to tease audiences with the thought of a landmark super fight between boxing and MMA superstars, McGregor can rest easy knowing he has already cemented his place as a historical figure in mixed martial arts. In a transcendent career bursting at the seams with defining moments, here are five that stand out: 1.

Opinion: No One Will Save You But You (and Other Modern Octagon Tips)

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * We're still amid what has become a routine, seasonal MMA occurrence, albeit an informal one: When the Ultimate Fighting Championship goes a couple weeks without a major event and gives some of its staff a bit of a reprieve. With UFC 211 ( online sportsbooks ) coming up on May 13 in Dallas, this is the theoretical calm before the storm. I say theoretical because everyone in the UFC seems to making noise except for the promotion itself. Since Al Iaquinta broke his two-year retirement on April 22 in Nashville, Tennessee, and clattered Diego Sanchez in 98 seconds, he has been the most talked-about fighter in the sport during a time without seemingly much to talk about. Perhaps that changed on Wednesday, when Nate Diaz made an appearance on “The MMA Hour” with Ariel Helwani, delivering an hour of his characteristically recalcitrant charm. While he was as irreverent as ever, Diaz's screed was also a sharp, penetrating manifesto for the modern MMA fighter.

Ricardo Abreu Retires After Receiving 4-Year Suspension for Second Anti-Doping Violation

Two-time UFC competitor Ricardo Abreu has elected to retire after receiving a four-year suspension from USADA for a second failed drug test within a six-month period. According to a statement from USADA, Abreu “tested positive for 19-norandrosterone (19-NA), the main urinary metabolite of nandrolone (19-nortestosterone) and other 19-norsteroids, above the decision limit of 3.4 ng/mL following an out-of-competition urine test conducted on December 21, 2016. In accordance with standard practice, the exogenous, or non-natural, origin of the 19-NA was further confirmed by sophisticated carbon isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS) analysis, which can reveal the presence of synthetic anabolic agents. In this case, the GC/C/IRMS analysis result was consistent with the exogenous origin of 19-NA. Anabolic Agents, including 19-NA, are non-Specified Substances prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, which has adopted the WADA Prohibited List.” After being informed of his positive test on Feb. 1, Abreu announced his retirement.

Dana White: Anderson Silva Will Not Be Getting an Interim Title Shot

Dana White is calling Anderson Silva ’s bluff. Earlier this week, Silva threatened to retire if he wasn’t given an interim title bout against top middleweight contender Yoel Romero at UFC 212 in Rio de Janeiro on June 3. According to the UFC president, that isn’t happening. You know my philosophy on that: If you ever say the ‘R’ word, you should probably do it anyway,” White told TMZ Sports . “If you’re ever considering retirement you should probably do it. “We will not do an interim title. No, it won’t happen. [Middleweight champion Michael] Bisping’s ready willing and able to fight the actual No. 1 contender, who is Yoel Romero,” White continued. “Anderson Silva is ranked No. 7 right now. He was willing to take the Romero fight for June because he was supposed to fight Kelvin Gastelum .” Of course, the Gastelum bout fell through because “The Ultimate Fighter 17” winner was flagged for marijuana metabolites in a post-fight drug test following a win over Vitor Belfort on March 11 and was pulled from the proposed fight with Silva.

Matthew Frincu Blows Away Maicon Mendonca in Legacy Fighting Alliance 11 Headliner

Matthew Frincu said it was only a matter of time. His words proved prophetic. The Arizona Combat Sports-trained Aussie took care of Maicon Mendonca with first-round punches in the Legacy Fighting Alliance 11 headliner on Friday at the Comerica Theater in Phoenix. Frincu (11-2) drew it to a close 1:36 into Round 1, as he recorded his fourth win in as many appearances. Mendonca (6-2) tried to dissuade the World Series of Fighting vet with kicks to the body and legs. He was unsuccessful. Frincu showed little regard for the Brazilian’s skills, backed him to the cage and uncorked a short left hook that sent him to the canvas. He followed up with punches on the conscious but defenseless Mendonca, prompting the stoppage from referee Ryan Brueggeman. In the welterweight co-main event, MMA Lab export James Nakashima remained undefeated with a lopsided unanimous decision over Bellator MMA veteran LaRue Burley . All three cageside judges sided with Nakashima (7-0). No scores were announced. Outside of a warning for a first-round eye poke and a point deduction for a second-round groin strike, Nakashima was flawless.

Lightweights Steven Ray, Paul Felder to Lock Horns at UFC Fight Night 113

Steven Ray will get a chance to compete on home soil when he faces Paul Felder at UFC Fight Night 113 in Scotland. The Las Vegas-based promotion announced the lightweight pairing on Friday. UFC Fight Night 113 takes place at the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow on July 16. The evening’s main card airs on Fox Sports 1, but a headliner for the event has not yet been revealed. Ray, 27, has been victorious in five of his first six Octagon appearances. Most recently, “Braveheart” garnered a majority decision triumph against Joe Lauzon at UFC Fight Night 108 on April 22. The Cage Warriors Fighting Championship veteran owns a 21-6 career mark, with 14 victories coming inside the distance. Felder, meanwhile, has won three of his last four promotional appearances. In his last outing, “The Irish Dragon” scored a first-round technical knockout victory against Alessandro Ricci on Feb. 19. The 32-year-old Philadelphia native is 5-3 in the UFC and 13-3 as a professional overall.

Angela Hill vs. Ashley Yoder, Three Other Bouts Confirmed for ‘TUF 25’ Finale on July 7

The lineup for "The Ultimate Fighter 25" finale continues to take shape, as the UFC on Friday revealed four matchups for the July 7 card. Angela Hill will face Ashley Yoder at strawweight; Ed Herman will meet C.B. Dollaway at middleweight and Marcel Fortuna will lock horns with Jordan Johnson at light heavyweight. Additionally, a previously reported women’s bantamweight clash between Jessica Eye and Aspen Ladd was also confirmed. “The Ultimate Fighter 25” finale takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be televised on Fox Sports 1. A headliner for the event has not been announced. Hill, the former Invicta FC 115-pound champ, returned to the Octagon at UFC Fight Night 104, where she dropped a unanimous decision to current No. 1 contender Jessica Andrade . Yoder, meanwhile, lost a decision to Justine Kish in her promotional debut at UFC Fight Night 102. Herman has alternated wins and losses in his last six bouts, including a head kick KO defeat to Nikita Krylov in his most recent outing at UFC 201.

5 Things You Might Not Know About Stipe Miocic

A precipitous rise to the top of the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s most volatile weight class has made Stipe Miocic a household name in mixed martial arts circles. Miocic will put the undisputed heavyweight crown on the line in a rematch with Junior dos Santos in the UFC 211 main event on May 13 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. There, the 34-year-old Euclid, Ohio, native can avenge his December 2014 loss to dos Santos and join Randy Couture , Tim Sylvia and Cain Velasquez as the only men to make two straight successful heavyweight title defenses. Miocic will carry a four-fight winning streak into the cage, the Strong Style Fight Team cornerstone having captured the championship on May 14, when he knocked out two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist Fabricio Werdum in front of more than 45,000 of his countrymen in Curitiba, Brazil. He then cemented his place as the sport’s top heavyweight four months later by wiping out former Dream and Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem with first-round punches in the UFC 203 headliner.

Dana White calls Anderson Silva's bluff: 'If you're considering retirement, you should probably do it'

“Every time for the last however many years, dealing with Anderson is always interesting,” White said. “Obviously, he wants an interim title – obviously, we’re not going to do an interim title. He’s definitely coming out publicly (with his demands). You know my philosophy on that: If you ever say the ‘R’ word, you should probably do it, anyway. If you’re considering retirement, you should probably do it.”

Guillotine Paves Heavyweight Champion Daniel Gallemore’s Way in VFC 57 Main Event

It did not take long for Daniel Gallemore to retain the Victory Fighting Championship heavyweight crown, as “Big Kansas” needed just 84 seconds to extinguish Daniel James in the VFC 57 main event on Friday at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, Kansas. James took the fight on less than two weeks’ notice, and Gallemore made certain his title bid ended in disappointment. Gallemore rocked the Chicagoan with a short flurry of punches to the face and forced the challenger to stumble toward a corner, where he met him with a standing guillotine choke. The champion wrenched James’ head and torqued his arms, forcing the tapout. In the co-main event, Kevin Gray hoped to open some eyes against Bellator MMA veteran Nick Mamalis . After a sluggish first round resulted in his being slammed and nearly submitted with a rear-naked choke, Gray switched up things in the second. “Pocket Herc” latched onto Mamalis’ neck during a scramble and did not let go until the fight was over. Caught in a standing guillotine, Mamalis gave referee Brandon Pfannenstiel a thumbs up. Soon after, he was asleep.

‘Baby Slice’ Set for Second Pro Appearance vs. D.J. Griffin at Bellator 179 in London

Kevin Ferguson Jr. , the son of the late Kimbo Slice , will return to action for his second professional fight against D.J. Griffin at Bellator 179 . The California-based promotion confirmed the catch-weight bout following an initial report from The Sun on Friday. Bellator 179 takes place at the O2 in London and is headlined by a welterweight duel pitting Rory MacDonald against Paul Daley . The evening’s main card will be televised on Spike beginning at 9 p.m. ET/8 p.m. CT. “Baby Slice” made his pro debut at Bellator 165, where he was submitted at the 3:00 mark of round two by Aaron Hamilton . Griffin, meanwhile, will be making his first professional foray after compiling a 2-2 mark on the amateur circuit. “I am so excited to get back to work and show the world how hard I've been grinding. “On a personal level, this fight means a lot to me,” Ferguson told The Sun. "Not only because I'll be making my Bellator main card debut but because I get to show the people in London how a Slice gets down. “Just like Pop's told me, keep your guard up, and stand your ground — I'm going to Slice this Griffin guy up real bad.

Oscar de la Hoya, Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. Rivals Again, This Time Outside the Ring

Oscar de la Hoya and Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. might not be climbing into the ring on Saturday night to dust off their gloves and throw punches again, but their deep-rooted rivalry isn’t exactly taking a back seat to the featured attraction. Saul Alvarez will be taking on Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in the main event of an HBO Pay-Per-View mega event in Las Vegas, but it’s hard not to think of Oscar and the elder Julio’s past battles. When De la Hoya, who eventually captured world titles in six different weight classes en route to enshrinement in the International Boxing Hall of Fame, was a rising star in the sport, his path crossed with Chavez Sr. It was the perfect matchup of polar opposites: a grizzled legend beloved by millions upon millions of rabid Mexican fight fans near the end of his Hall of Fame career taking on de la Hoya, a talented knockout artist with striking good looks and never-ending charisma. Chavez was a true Mexican through and through while de la Hoya was American; he was hated by most boxing fans but desired by millions upon millions of women. The two first locked horns in 1996 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and “The Golden Boy” tore Chavez up.

Boxing: Saul Alvarez vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Play-by-Play & Round-by-Round Scoring

Undercard Results The opening bout of the PPV telecast pitted unbeaten featherweights Joseph Diaz Jr. and Manuel Avila against one another and when it was all said and done, “JoJo" was on a completely different level. Avila (22-1, 8 KOs), who works full time as a construction worker, tried his best to out-box his adversary, but Diaz Jr. was on point with both his leads and counters. Avila suffered a cut above his left eye in the sixth and was never able to get things going. Diaz Jr. (24-0, 13 KOs) distanced himself down the stretch as he picked his foe apart from the outside and won a lopsided unanimous decision after 10 rounds. The scores were 100-90 and 99-91 (twice) for Diaz Jr. as he continues to creep up the 126-pound ladder. Lucas Matthysse had been out of action for over 15 months. By the looks of him on Saturday night at welterweight, it was as if he never left.
