The MMA Hall of F@#$%&g Awesome: Drew McFedries

Illustration: Ben Duffy/ Headquartered in scenic Woodloch, Texas, the Mixed Martial Arts Hall of F@#$%&g Awesome commemorates the achievements of those fighters who might not be first-ballot selections for a traditional hall of fame but nonetheless did remarkable things in the cage or ring and deserve to be remembered. The HOFA enshrines pioneers, one-trick ponies and charming oddballs and celebrates them in all their imperfect glory. While the HOFA selection committee’s criteria are mysterious and ever-evolving, the final test is whether the members can say, unanimously and with enthusiasm, “____________ was F@#$%&g awesome!” * * * “Some guys, they like Jiu-Jitsu or they like to wrestle. I like to strike and knock people out. That’s my thing.” -- Drew McFedries THE PITCH: It may be difficult to imagine for a fan coming to the sport in 2018, but once upon a time, there was no UFC Performance Institute where the Francis Ngannous of the day could have the concussive force of their strikes tested under laboratory conditions.

Chad Mendes Returns from 2-Year Suspension, Meets Myles Jury at UFC Fight Night Boise

Chad Mendes has nearly completed his two-year USADA suspension and will return to the Octagon against Myles Jury at UFC Fight Night 133 . The Las Vegas-based promotion confirmed the featherweight pairing on Monday. The previously reported heavyweight headliner pitting Junior dos Santos against Blagoy Ivanov was also made official, as was a lightweight clash between Paul Felder and James Vick . UFC Fight Night 133 takes place at the CenturyLine Arena in Boise, Idaho on July 14. The card will air on Fox Sports 1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass. Mendes received a two-year sanction in July after testing positive for growth hormone. The Team Alpha Male standout claimed that he never knowingly took performance enhancing drugs and blamed the failed drug test on a skin cream used to treat plaque psoriasis . The 33-year-old last appeared at “The Ultimate Fighter 22” finale, where he suffered first-round knockout loss to Frankie Edgar . Jury, meanwhile, is coming off a 2-0 campaign in 2017. The 29-year-old defeated Mike da la Torre via first-round TKO at UFC 210 before outpointing Rick Glenn at UFC 219 this past December.

Rousey Teammates Jessamyn Duke, Marina Shafir Preparing to Join WWE

Before any of them really got into the sports entertainment business, Ronda Rousey , Shayna Baszler , Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir referred to themselves as “The Four Horsewomen.” While that group — at least outside of Rousey — experienced varying levels of success in mixed martial arts, they could have a chance to reunite in the WWE in the near future. On Monday, the organization announced that Duke and Shafir will be training at the WWE Performance Center to prepare for their in-ring debut. Rousey and Baszler are already under WWE contract. Rousey made her WWE debut at WrestleMania last month, and was widely praised for her performance. Baszler, meanwhile, won a title in the WWE’s NXT. Duke, a cast member on Season 18 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” went 1-3 during a brief tenure in the UFC. She then dropped back-to-back fights to Irene Aldana and Cindy Dandois under the Invicta FC banner in 2016 to fall to 3-5 with one on contest in her career. She hasn’t competed in MMA since then. Shafir, meanwhile, generated some buzz after beginning her amateur career with five consecutive first-round submission victories.

Paul Daley’s Relationship with Bellator MMA Continues to Deteriorate

Paul Daley is set to take on Jon Fitch Saturday night in a co-main event bout at Bellator 199 . Fitch will be making his debut under the Bellator umbrella, whereas Daley heads into his ninth bout with the organization. It may well be Daley’s last fight with Bellator MMA as there’s been a lot of friction between himself with the promotion and its president, Scott Coker. He’s accused the organization in the past for not properly utilizing his services and stating that he would leave the company after his current contract was up. He’s also blamed Coker of being bitter towards him when he did not take the fight against Michael Page . Daley recently talked with and said he doesn’t feel valued anymore by Bellator MMA: “I’ve had great times with Bellator. I just don’t like the recent treatment of me. I’ve made it clear, and I will continue to make it clear through all the interviews -- at the post-fight, at the pre-fight, during fight week -- I ain’t happy with what you guys are doing. I can see through what you guys are doing.

Eddie Alvarez Reportedly Meeting with UFC Officials Regarding Contract Negotiations

It was recently reported that former Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez was offered a new contract by the UFC, but it was so low he didn’t even make a counter offer. Alvarez has one fight left on his current deal and has publicly said he won’t be taking the fight until his future has been sorted; whether that’s with the UFC or another organisation. The former champion has taken a different approach to contract negotiations by keeping his last fight up his sleeve while going public about the deal he was offered. Although it seems his unorthodox approach may have worked, as reported by ESPN’s Brett Okamoto on Twitter, who has said the UFC have decided to meet with Alvarez in person surrounding his contract situation: In addition to attending the Celtics game in Philly today, I’m told White met with Eddie Alvarez about his UFC contract. No update to report at this time, other than they took that step to meet up in person. — Brett Okamoto (@bokamotoESPN) May 6, 2018 Alvarez last fought in a potential “Fight of the Year” battle, handing knockout king Justin Gaethje his first ever professional loss via third-round knockout from a devastating knee.

WEC, Pride Veteran Paulo Filho to Make MMA Return at Event in Kuwait on June 11

Brazilian veteran Paulo Filho will return to action for the first time in more than four years when he steps into the cage at an event in Kuwait on June 11. Psicoticos por VT was first to report the news. The Carlson Gracie black belt will square off against Egypt’s Mohamed Ashraf at a Wawan MMA event. The weight class and venue have not yet been announced by the promotion. A number of personal problems have kept the 39-year-old Brazilian out of action since his last appearance — a decision loss to Andre Muniz at Bitetti Combat 19 — on Feb. 6, 2014. The former World Extreme Cagefighting champion was shot in the leg during a confrontation at a party in 2014. The bullet caused an exposed fracture to his left femur and put his fighting career in jeopardy. Filho began his MMA career with 16 consecutive wins from 2000 to 2007 and was considered by many as the No. 2 middleweight in the world behind Anderson Silva at that time. However, Filho admitted that a drug problem derailed his career. The Brazilian Top Team representative went just 7-6-3 after that memorable beginning.

Glory Veteran Aleksandro Pereira Signs to Compete on UFC’s Brazilian Contender Series

Brazilian kickboxing champion Aleksandro Pereira will get an opportunity to earn a UFC contract this summer. Sources close to the situation confirmed that “Poatan” will likely be part of the Brazilian version of Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series. The show is expected to be taped at “The Ultimate Fighter” gym on Aug. 9-11 and will be released at a later date via tape delay in Brazil, according to . Those with the most impressive performances on the Contender Series are often selected to receive a UFC contract. Pereira owns a 2-1 mixed martial arts record. He last competed at Jungle Fight 87 in May 2016, when he scored a second-round TKO of Marcus Vinicius Fialho da Silveira. The Sao Paulo native is best known for his exploits in the kickboxing ring. He has competed in promotions such as SUPERKOMBAT, It’s Time, WGP Kickboxing and Glory. Pereira won the Glory middleweight contender tournament in 2014 and was the WGP Kickboxing middleweight champion in 2015. He last competed for Glory in December, taking a third-round TKO win over Yousri Belagroui at Glory 49: Rotterdam.

Why are Jay Hieron and Andrei Arlovski trying to kill Denzel Washington?

“Not all enemies are created equal,” reads the promo for what serves as the first sequel of Washington’s storied career. UFC Welterweight Mike Perry Moves Training Camp to Jackson-Wink MMA in New Mexico

On the heels of the first two-fight losing streak of his professional career, Mike Perry is looking to change things up a little bit. To help improve his overall game, the welterweight knockout artist has relocated his camp to Jackson-Wink MMA in Albuquerque, N.M., the renowned gym led by coaches Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn and home to fighters such as Jon Jones , Holly Holm and Carlos Condit , to name a few. confirmed the move with Jackson-Wink general manager Michael Lyubimov on Monday. According to Lyubimov, Perry said that he plans on holding his full camp in New Mexico. However, Perry’s manager, Malki Kawa, told that the fighter will spend part of his camp for his UFC 226 bout against Yancy Medeiros at Jackson-Wink before concluding his training at home in Orlando, Fla. UFC 226 takes place on July 7 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Regardless of the specifics, it’s clear that Perry is seeking a change after dropping back-to-back decisions against Max Griffin and Santiago Ponzinibbio in his last two Octagon appearances.

Fighters are hospitalized, title contenders swapped. The culprit, one Conor McGregor , is jailed. We can all thankfully move on from UFC 223 , but there is one thing worth revisiting, one thing that didn’t receive its proper shock because no one had much energy left when it happened the day before the event in Brooklyn, New York. It involved Brock Lesnar and the forthcoming superfight between Daniel Cormier and Stipe Miocic . “What are the chances of him facing the winner of DC-Stipe?” a reporter asked UFC President Dana White at the promotion’s 25th anniversary press conference. “Yeah that’s a possibility,” White said. Such possibilities, one might argue, are not worth getting up in arms about, especially in this day and age in MMA.

Megan Anderson Pumped to Make Octagon Debut Against Big Name Like Holly Holm

Former Invicta Fighting Championships featherweight champion Megan Anderson is set to make her Ultimate Fighting Championship debut against Holly Holm at UFC 225 . The bout will take place at featherweight inside the United Center in Chicago, Illinois, on June 9. This will be the first non-title women’s featherweight bout in UFC history, with the winner most likely to get a shot at the champion, Cristiane Justino . The 28-year-old Australian comes into the UFC with a lot of hype surrounding her. Anderson is a physically intimating featherweight who many believe can match Cyborg, who is used to bullying her opponents inside the Octagon. Anderson is riding a four-fight winning streak and last fought in January 2017, where she beat Charmaine Tweet via a technical knockout in the second round for the interim Invicta FC featherweight championship, which was later promoted to undisputed champion. Anderson recently talked to and said she was surprised that the UFC matched her with a big name like Holm for her debut: “I was actually really surprised.
