Tonya Evinger Retains Bantamweight Strap, Angela Hill Claims 115-Pound Gold at Invicta 17

Tonya Evinger ’s first Invicta Fighting Championships bantamweight title defense was methodical, efficient and occasionally dominant. Facing a game opponent who refused to wilt under her pressure, “Triple Threat” retained the 135-pound strap with a unanimous decision over Colleen Schneider in the Invicta 17 headliner on Saturday at The Hangar at OC Fair in Costa Mesa, California. Two judges scored it 50-44 for Evinger, while a third saw it 49-45 in her favor. “I think that was one of my worst performances,” she said. “I felt pretty good in the first two rounds. The last three rounds, I felt pretty sick. I felt like I should have won it in the first two rounds, but I just didn’t perform well.” Evinger nearly made it short night. She caught Schneider with a short left hand near the fence in the opening frame and then pounced on her opponent’s back. Evinger spent the remainder of the period pummeling Schneider with punches and elbows from back control. Somehow, Schneider made it to the bell. From there, Evinger (18-5, 6-0 Invicta) controlled the fight, but she was not nearly as overpowering.

UFC Fight Night 87 results: Gunnar Nelson gets tap, becomes first to finish Albert Tumenov

Assuming a stance very much like his training partner, UFC featherweight champ Conor McGregor, Nelson got to work fast with quick hooks that caught Tumenov before a reply. Tumenov hoped to take the hop out of his opponent’s step by working the body, and managed to land enough shots to produce a nice welt on Nelson’s flank. But he failed to time a takedown, and Nelson quickly took mount. There, he punished the Russian with heavy elbows, producing a nice-sized hematoma over the fighter’s left brow.

Boxing: Canelo Alvarez Stops Khan in Devastating Fashion

It seemed a matter of time. Each second, each minute, each round, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez kept getting closer and closer to his prey. Amir Khan ’s time was winding down—and slam!—just like that it was over. Alvarez stopped Khan at 2:37 of the sixth round to retain the WBC middleweight title, and then threw a pile of wood on the burning speculation that Alvarez would face Gennady “GGG” Golovkin this fall. Alvarez (47-1-1, 33) said he invited Golovkin into the ring after stopping Khan. He did it for a reason: To prove he’s not afraid of the Kazakhstan knockout machine. “He’s a fast fighter and I knew things would come in my favor,” Alvarez said about Khan. “Many people focus on my power but I like to surprise everyone. I have boxing skills. If someone wants to box, I’ll box. Someone that comes to attack, it gives you a very nice fight.” And then Alvarez’s demeanor changed. His face scrounged up as if he was ready to fight again. It’s when GGG appeared inside the ring. “I invited (GGG) to the ring,” Alvarez said. “They say in Mexico, we don’t (expletive) around.

Heather Clark vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz Round 1 Clark sticks a right hand down the center, takes a leg kick in return and lands the right again. Kowalkiewicz wants to tie up but is having trouble keeping hold of the American, who looks to have the strength advantage here in the opening round. The strawweights tie up on the fence, Clark taking the outside position, but Kowalkiewicz exits with a slashing elbow. Clark comes back on a single-leg, driving the unbeaten Pole’s back against the fence again. Kowalkiewicz punches her way out and tries to rush Clark with a four-punch combo, but they all appear to miss. Kowalkiewicz catches Clark throwing a lazy right hand, whips around the drives a spinning kick into the American’s midsection. Clark gets out of danger by muscling Kowalkiewicz against the fence until the round ends. Sherdog Scores Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Clark Brian Knapp scores the round 10-9 Clark Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Clark Round 2 Clark fights for a takedown and nearly succeed, but Kowalkiewicz is back on her feet almost as soon as her knees touch the canvas.

Opinion: UFC Errs in Bypassing Desirable Rematches

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. To rematch or not to rematch -- that is the question. With a Robbie Lawler - Tyron Woodley main event ticketed for UFC 201 , it is clear the Ultimate Fighting Championship decided to move away from the immediate title fight rematch in favor of bringing in new blood to challenge for the belt. The reasons why some fights are made again and others aren’t granted that same opportunity are quite cloudy, and I don’t know how to feel about it. Although we’re getting a second installment of Luke Rockhold - Chris Weidman , the UFC nixed a Lawler- Carlos Condit rematch and shut down the idea of Miesha Tate giving Holly Holm the opportunity to reclaim the women’s bantamweight title. I wouldn’t have had a problem with either of those fights being made again because the alternatives simply aren’t as interesting. Of the three potential rematches to be made -- Rockhold-Weidman, Tate-Holm and Lawler-Condit -- the one that was actually secured was the lowest on the totem poll of fights deserving a rematch.
