Ronda Rousey: 5 Defining Moments

Ronda Rousey was a game-changer. After a decorated career as an amateur judoka, Rousey made the transition to mixed martial arts, put together a successful run in Strikeforce and blazed a trail to the Ultimate Fighting Championship , where she helped tear down the last remaining barriers for women in MMA. Few have enjoyed such a dominant run at the top, short-lived though it might have been. Rousey stopped her first 11 opponents, 10 of them inside one round. Included among those were finishes of 14, 16, 25 (twice), 34, 39, 49, 54 and 66 seconds. In time, she was the most marketable fighter in the sport, parlaying her rise into crossover stardom. Rousey hit the cover the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition, hosted “Saturday Night Live” and landed movie roles in “The Expendables” series, “Entourage,” “Furious 7” and the soon-to-be-released “Roadhouse” remake. Unprecedented prosperity inside the cage was followed by a precipitous fall from grace, as back-to-back losses placed her MMA pursuits in limbo at age 30 and left many to wonder whether or not she will ever compete again.

Opinion: No One Will Save You But You (and Other Modern Octagon Tips)

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * We're still amid what has become a routine, seasonal MMA occurrence, albeit an informal one: When the Ultimate Fighting Championship goes a couple weeks without a major event and gives some of its staff a bit of a reprieve. With UFC 211 ( online sportsbooks ) coming up on May 13 in Dallas, this is the theoretical calm before the storm. I say theoretical because everyone in the UFC seems to making noise except for the promotion itself. Since Al Iaquinta broke his two-year retirement on April 22 in Nashville, Tennessee, and clattered Diego Sanchez in 98 seconds, he has been the most talked-about fighter in the sport during a time without seemingly much to talk about. Perhaps that changed on Wednesday, when Nate Diaz made an appearance on “The MMA Hour” with Ariel Helwani, delivering an hour of his characteristically recalcitrant charm. While he was as irreverent as ever, Diaz's screed was also a sharp, penetrating manifesto for the modern MMA fighter.

5 Things You Might Not Know About Stipe Miocic

A precipitous rise to the top of the Ultimate Fighting Championship ’s most volatile weight class has made Stipe Miocic a household name in mixed martial arts circles. Miocic will put the undisputed heavyweight crown on the line in a rematch with Junior dos Santos in the UFC 211 main event on May 13 at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. There, the 34-year-old Euclid, Ohio, native can avenge his December 2014 loss to dos Santos and join Randy Couture , Tim Sylvia and Cain Velasquez as the only men to make two straight successful heavyweight title defenses. Miocic will carry a four-fight winning streak into the cage, the Strong Style Fight Team cornerstone having captured the championship on May 14, when he knocked out two-time Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist Fabricio Werdum in front of more than 45,000 of his countrymen in Curitiba, Brazil. He then cemented his place as the sport’s top heavyweight four months later by wiping out former Dream and Strikeforce champion Alistair Overeem with first-round punches in the UFC 203 headliner.

Sherdog Prospect Watch: Trevin Giles

Trevin Giles has worked hard to reach his goal of becoming the first person in his family to graduate from college. In his free time, he has quietly put together a perfect 9-0 start to his career as a professional mixed martial artist. Giles started formal MMA training at the age of 20, using it as a way to stay in shape and prepare for football season at Texas Southern University. Little did he know that he would not only step into the cage someday but also become one of the top prospects in the sport. “I was just trying to stay in shape to walk on and play football at TSU,” Giles told Sherdog.com. “I would watch the UFC and see these guys fight for 25 minutes straight, and I thought, ‘They are the most in-shape people in the world.’” Giles started his sessions at Elite MMA in Houston, where he still trains today. After a year and a half in the gym and earning the respect and support of his teammates, he decided to turn his hobby into a possible career. Success was immediate. “Winning my first amateur fight is an accomplishment I am proud of,” Giles said.

Lightweights Steven Ray, Paul Felder to Lock Horns at UFC Fight Night 113

Steven Ray will get a chance to compete on home soil when he faces Paul Felder at UFC Fight Night 113 in Scotland. The Las Vegas-based promotion announced the lightweight pairing on Friday. UFC Fight Night 113 takes place at the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow on July 16. The evening’s main card airs on Fox Sports 1, but a headliner for the event has not yet been revealed. Ray, 27, has been victorious in five of his first six Octagon appearances. Most recently, “Braveheart” garnered a majority decision triumph against Joe Lauzon at UFC Fight Night 108 on April 22. The Cage Warriors Fighting Championship veteran owns a 21-6 career mark, with 14 victories coming inside the distance. Felder, meanwhile, has won three of his last four promotional appearances. In his last outing, “The Irish Dragon” scored a first-round technical knockout victory against Alessandro Ricci on Feb. 19. The 32-year-old Philadelphia native is 5-3 in the UFC and 13-3 as a professional overall.

Matthew Frincu Blows Away Maicon Mendonca in Legacy Fighting Alliance 11 Headliner

Matthew Frincu said it was only a matter of time. His words proved prophetic. The Arizona Combat Sports-trained Aussie took care of Maicon Mendonca with first-round punches in the Legacy Fighting Alliance 11 headliner on Friday at the Comerica Theater in Phoenix. Frincu (11-2) drew it to a close 1:36 into Round 1, as he recorded his fourth win in as many appearances. Mendonca (6-2) tried to dissuade the World Series of Fighting vet with kicks to the body and legs. He was unsuccessful. Frincu showed little regard for the Brazilian’s skills, backed him to the cage and uncorked a short left hook that sent him to the canvas. He followed up with punches on the conscious but defenseless Mendonca, prompting the stoppage from referee Ryan Brueggeman. In the welterweight co-main event, MMA Lab export James Nakashima remained undefeated with a lopsided unanimous decision over Bellator MMA veteran LaRue Burley . All three cageside judges sided with Nakashima (7-0). No scores were announced. Outside of a warning for a first-round eye poke and a point deduction for a second-round groin strike, Nakashima was flawless.

Additionally, a previously reported women’s bantamweight clash between Jessica Eye and Aspen Ladd was also confirmed. “The Ultimate Fighter 25” finale takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas and will be televised on Fox Sports 1. A headliner for the event has not been announced. Hill, the former Invicta FC 115-pound champ, returned to the Octagon at UFC Fight Night 104, where she dropped a unanimous decision to current No. 1 contender Jessica Andrade . Yoder, meanwhile, lost a decision to Justine Kish in her promotional debut at UFC Fight Night 102. Herman has alternated wins and losses in his last six bouts, including a head kick KO defeat to Nikita Krylov in his most recent outing at UFC 201.

Ricardo Abreu Retires After Receiving 4-Year Suspension for Second Anti-Doping Violation

Two-time UFC competitor Ricardo Abreu has elected to retire after receiving a four-year suspension from USADA for a second failed drug test within a six-month period. According to a statement from USADA, Abreu “tested positive for 19-norandrosterone (19-NA), the main urinary metabolite of nandrolone (19-nortestosterone) and other 19-norsteroids, above the decision limit of 3.4 ng/mL following an out-of-competition urine test conducted on December 21, 2016. In accordance with standard practice, the exogenous, or non-natural, origin of the 19-NA was further confirmed by sophisticated carbon isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (GC/C/IRMS) analysis, which can reveal the presence of synthetic anabolic agents. In this case, the GC/C/IRMS analysis result was consistent with the exogenous origin of 19-NA. Anabolic Agents, including 19-NA, are non-Specified Substances prohibited at all times under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, which has adopted the WADA Prohibited List.” After being informed of his positive test on Feb. 1, Abreu announced his retirement.

Guillotine Paves Heavyweight Champion Daniel Gallemore’s Way in VFC 57 Main Event

It did not take long for Daniel Gallemore to retain the Victory Fighting Championship heavyweight crown, as “Big Kansas” needed just 84 seconds to extinguish Daniel James in the VFC 57 main event on Friday at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, Kansas. James took the fight on less than two weeks’ notice, and Gallemore made certain his title bid ended in disappointment. Gallemore rocked the Chicagoan with a short flurry of punches to the face and forced the challenger to stumble toward a corner, where he met him with a standing guillotine choke. The champion wrenched James’ head and torqued his arms, forcing the tapout. In the co-main event, Kevin Gray hoped to open some eyes against Bellator MMA veteran Nick Mamalis . After a sluggish first round resulted in his being slammed and nearly submitted with a rear-naked choke, Gray switched up things in the second. “Pocket Herc” latched onto Mamalis’ neck during a scramble and did not let go until the fight was over. Caught in a standing guillotine, Mamalis gave referee Brandon Pfannenstiel a thumbs up. Soon after, he was asleep.
