America’s rotting empire: Billionaires galore and a crumbling infrastructure

America has the most billionaires in the world, but not a single U.S. city ranks among the world’s most livable cities. Not a single U.S. airport is among the top 100 airports in the world. Our bridges, road and rail are falling apart, and our middle class is being guttered out thanks to three decades of stagnant wages, while the top 1 percent enjoys 95 percent of all economic gains.

- Vocês não vão acreditar. Minha magrela foi roubada! Fiquei bem triste!

If you watch me roll I do what I call “keepitplayful.” I might work for the dominant position but as soon or before it is established I allow myself to get into an inferior position. I also allow my training partner to go for a submission and depending on how I feel I either attempt to defend the submission early, at the half way point or late. I risk being stuck in an inferior position or getting tapped out.  I’m okay with this because the information that I collect from experiencing jiu-jitsu this way is different. Due to the KeepItPlayful approach I am less concerned with “winning” and instead looking to create / allow movement while observing my partners jiu-jitsu and therefore creating a greater understanding. If you allow yourself to spend time in all positions you build comfort in all positions, and if you do this, you win.

“If anybody’s seen me in person when cutting down to featherweight, it’s gross,” he said. “After my last fight at 145, I was looking through pictures the day of and a couple days before weigh-ins and it was definitely a red flag, like, this definitely isn’t healthy. It didn’t look good and didn’t look right, and it showed in my performances. That 10 pounds of muscle is a lot of muscle.

Cage Warriors Institutes 60 Percent Fine for Fighters Who Miss Weight

Fighters who miss weight under the CWFC banner will face a hefty penalty. | Cage Warriors Fighting Championship just became more serious about fighters making weight. The English organization announced Friday that fighters who do not hit their contracted marks when they step on the scale will now be fined 60 percent of their purse. The policy will go into effect on June 7, when CWFC 69 goes down at The Forum in London. Fighters were previously only fined 25 percent of their purse if they weighed in over the limit by 2.2 pounds or less. If fighters weighed in heavier than that, they were fined 40 percent of their pay. Moving forward, all fighters who miss weight will be fined 60 percent of their purse, regardless of how heavy they step on the scale. The opponent will receive 40 percent of that sum, while the remaining 20 percent will be donated to a charity of the opponent’s choice. The organization will continue to allow fighters an extra two hours to make weight if they are heavy on their first try.

Bellator 119 live results and video stream (7 p.m. ET)

Butler was docked a point in the main card opener’s first round when he threw a backward headbutt at Rossborough, who took his back after landing a big shot. Unfortunately, he was rewarded for his infraction when the referee restarted the fight in the standing position. Rossborough nearly turned the fight to his advantage when he landed a flurry of punches that put Butler on wobbly legs, but it would be his last gasp.

Bellator 119: Weichel vs. Green preview and predictions

Green's athleticism and wrestle-boxing allow him to dictate the fight's pace and location, and that's the challenge awaiting Weichel. A Jiu Jitsu practitioner at heart, Weichel has the technical advantage in submissions by a substantial margin and in the striking aspect too, though not by much. Weichel's boxing is simple, sharp, fast and accurate, and that, along with his patient and cerebral style, gives him a good chance to cause Green some problems on the feet. Barring opportunities in scrambles or after a stunning blow, it's unlikely that Weichel's submission prowess will come into play.

Seriously, I’m never feeling hungry, and if I would, I know I get to eat soon again – another big meal! I’m still strong in my sport which is the most important thing+ getting lean & ripped! I’ve already lost about 10 pounds and it feels great. I took 2 days off from it during World Challenge on March 8th- the biggest arm wrestling competition for women in the world, and that was pretty successful. And Now He’s Retired: Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos Calls It Quits After Quick TKO Loss to Melvin Manhoef in Rematch

A puffologist's view of Matt Brown, the UFC's great unsung contender

It’s hard not to be a Matt Brown connoisseur, but there are plenty of people to this day still resisting the urge. Why this is exactly I’m not totally sure, but I suspect it has something to do with the wide margin of his primal-to-commercial ratio (which is something like 150-to-1). Matt Brown, it can be said, covers the fetishistic need for violence, but doesn’t do much for our helpless devotion towards hype. It’s all very confusing. Whatever the case may be, heading into Saturday night’s fight with Erick Silva the facts speak for themselves -- Brown, who was on a dark ledge after losing four of five bouts, has now won six fights in a row, and those wins have come against guys who felt pretty good coming in. Stephen Thompson was the day’s buzz fighter, until Brown cut him down to size. Mike Pyle had won four UFC fights in a row and Jordan Mein was on a three-fight pan-promotional run when each crashed headfirst into the "Immortal" brick wall. These weren’t stumblebums; they were just unfortunates. And the truth of the matter is… Brown does things to a man . After a run-in with him in Seattle, Mike Swick just sort of stopped fighting and began opening gyms on the Phuket Province.

Gilbert Melendez feels he is better than Anthony Pettis 'In a bunch of different dimensions'

When that fight does occur, on the UFC's end of 2014 card, Melendez will be out of action for more than a year. That layoff is something that doesn't concern the former Strikeforce champion in the least, "I could see if you're not in the gym and you take a whole year off, and you don't train. Then you can become pretty rusty, but I stay in the gym and help my buddies out, and it's just something I do. I'll definitely be ready - I'm always ready."

Much to learn from and about UFC Fight Pass and future of streaming channels

Stats show that almost all subscribers, more than 90 percent in total, watched those shows within a 24-hour period. The surprise is, most will not watch them live. It runs about 30 percent live and 70 percent later, which contradicts the belief UFC fans need to watch it when it happens. Granted, the China and Singapore shows took place in the middle of the night, but even the London show, the strongest marquee offering to date, airing on a Saturday afternoon ni the U.S., had more viewers after the fact than live. The UFC has also lucked out that the four Fight Pass shows were among the best events the company has put on from an action standpoint, all year, so word of mouth to watch those shows after completion was strong in every case.

When It Comes To PPV The UFC Could Learn A Lesson From Boxing

The article also provided an interesting breakdown of the economics of a pay-per-view. The fact that a promoter in boxing could afford to pay out $5 million in purses for a 200,000 selling pay-per-view should be sufficient to explain why the UFC, with its much lower payouts, is hesitant to cut the number of such events. But this may be shortsighted by the UFC, for as HBO's experience demonstrates, the UFC is only cannibalizing the sales of their bigger events when they run so many less compelling cards. As Bill King summarized at the end of his piece:

Miesha Tate: I think my stock’s gone up a lot. I do want to get paid more

The former Strikeforce women's bantamweight champion was at a UFC public awareness campaign aimed at relaying the importance of HIV testing, and managed to speak with the media following the event. Tate, who only has one fight remaining on her four-fight deal, is interested in signing a new contract before returning to the octagon.

Fight Path: Son’s health battles fuel Justin Frazier for Bellator PPV event, grudge match

As he has been, Frazier, a 24-year-old heavyweight, was prepared to drop his training, his next fight and possibly his career if his son needed him. The seizures were later resolved and explained, so for now Frazier is ready to fight, hoping to again gain momentum in a career that saw success before a son and medical issues.

UFC Vet Brock Larson Named Final Fighter in BattleGrounds MMA’s One-Night Tourney

Champions in Training: Georges St-Pierre, Jose Aldo, and Chris Weidman

Given that it goes to decision, there's a lot we can unpack here, but let's focus on the essentials. The first point is how much better Weidman is at judging distance and timing on his takedown attempts. The second is the improvement in his striking. He was solid against Hall, but the 1-2 combinations, angles, and movement all look much better here. The third is the development of his clinch game; he only landed a few big shots, but he showed that he knew how to stay busy, grind, and win rounds against the fence if need be. This is a consistent characteristic of Ray Longo-trained fighters in general. The fourth is the further development of his submission game: obviously he didn't succeed in completing a sub attempt, but he looked for the guillotine a number of times. Note here how he transitions from the double collar tie and a barrage of knees to the standing guillotine at the very end:

Constantinos Philippou out to prove he's tough enough to rebound from devastating loss

The 34-year-old UFC middleweight could take a step toward evolution when he meets Lorenz Larkin (14-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) on Saturday at UFC Fight 40 in a co-headliner at Cincinnati’s U.S. Bank Arena. He could also slide further down the division’s ladder if he is unable to apply the lessons learned from Rockhold, who is again lingering on the cusp of a title shot.

UFC Fight Night Cincinnati: Heavy Hands interview of Lorenz Larkin, fight week

Lorenz Larkin was outworked by Brad Tavares in his last UFC bout, mainly due to his lack of striking volume. In this exclusive interview, the UFC middleweight says that he plans to do less waiting and more fighting against Costa Philippou this weekend.

Which reminds me, if you’re going to be live-tweeting or live-blogging a fight card, you can’t eat something that makes your fingers gross and sticky. That means no ribs, and no burgers that are dripping with ketchup or other condiments. I thought Cool Ranch Doritos Tacos might be safe one Bellator event, only to find that the Cool Ranch dust was all over my fingertips. My jokes were seconds late—an eternity on twitter—and the CagePotato twitter lost out on precious engagement statistics.

Morning Report: Greg Jackson believes Georges St-Pierre returns for 'a fight or two'

"I think with Georges he doesn't mind a challenge. It's never really bothered him. It gives him something to focus on. I don't think it's going to be the end of his career at all. He's already retired, anyway, so he's got time to rehab. He probably will come back. It would be my guess, an educated guess. I'm not saying at 100%, but if I know Georges he might do another fight or two just to do it. He's a warrior all the way. He's a guy that likes challenges. If he's got to rehab the knee, that's what he's got to do. If he's got to keep the belt, that's what he's got to do. If he's got to earn it back, that's what he's got to do."
