Preview: UFC 212 ‘Aldo vs. Holloway’ - Aldo vs. Holloway

With several meaningful fights falling through, UFC 212 is starting to look like a shadow of the card it could have been. Honestly, it does not matter. Jose Aldo and Max Holloway will fight to unify the Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight title in the main event on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, and this card would be worth watching even if the entire undercard was one long replay of “The Ultimate Fighter China.” Fortunately, there are still a few gems sprinkled throughout the card. The co-main event between Claudia Gadelha and Karolina Kowalkiewicz has the potential for fireworks and could put either woman into position for one more crack at strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk . Before they hit the cage, Vitor Belfort returns to his hometown for one last hurrah in an exciting matchup with fellow veteran Nate Marquardt . In the featured prelim slot, former World Series of Fighting bantamweight champ Marlon Moraes makes his long-awaited UFC debut against elite gatekeeper Raphael Assuncao . Let us take a closer look at each UFC 212 “Aldo vs.

‘TUF 25’ Recap: Episode 7

The final preliminary bout of the season is on deck for tonight’s episode and Team Garbrandt has been languishing in misery, still unable to get a single win. Considering how much Cody Garbrandt detests his opposing coach T.J. Dillashaw , it goes without saying that the reigning Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight champion is not pleased with how this season’s fights have unfolded. Joe Stevenson begins the show busting his butt in the gym and explaining his time as a longtime veteran of mixed martial arts. The “TUF 2” champ’s highlights from that season roll and his destructions of Marcus Davis and Jason Von Flue and decision win over Luke Cummo in the Finale punctuate the portion of the reel. “Daddy” explodes into the UFC proper by bludgeoning Yves Edwards , Melvin Guillard and Kurt Pellegrino . But his loss to B.J. Penn for the lightweight title preceded a shocking knockout loss to Mac Danzig and after losing several fights in a row, Stevenson was let go. “Daddy” chronicles how his depression from how his MMA career unfolded from there led to alcohol abuse.

MMA’s Greats of the States | Vermont: Tom Murphy

Vermont has given rise to two United States presidents, Carlton Fisk and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, but it has not proven to be a haven for mixed martial artists. While “The Green Mountain State” has produced its share of fighters over the years, Ultimate Fighting Championship alum Tom Murphy put himself at the top of the list. A St. Albans, Vermont, native, Murphy can point to an accomplishment few others can: He retired undefeated. The Tristar Gym representative executed seven finishes in compiling an 8-0 record. Murphy struck Jason Guida into submission in November 2004 and then knocked out Josh Hendricks in a mere 90 seconds at a King of the Cage event a little less than four months later. His exploits on the regional circuit resulted in his being cast on Season 2 of “The Ultimate Fighter” reality series, as he was eliminated from the heavyweight tournament by Rashad Evans . Murphy made his promotional debut at UFC 58 in March 2006 and put away Icho Larenas with punches before disappearing from the MMA scene for more than two years. Murphy never again fought in the UFC.

UFC 212 Statistical Matchup Analysis: Aldo vs. Holloway

Since Conor McGregor captured the featherweight title at UFC 194, the division has been in limbo. Even after the Irishman was stripped of the championship, his absence has cast a long shadow over the weight class. Now, at UFC 212 on Saturday in Rio de Janeiro, the 145-pound division has its first opportunity to achieve real coherence since 2015. Longtime champion Jose Aldo looks to cement his second Ultimate Fighting Championship title reign with his first defense since losing the belt to McGregor in 2015. After those fateful 13 seconds, Aldo took seven months off before returning at UFC 200, where he put on a masterclass performance against former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar . The win gave Aldo the interim belt -- he was promoted to the genuine article months later after McGregor was stripped -- but more importantly proved that “Scarface” was still as dangerous as ever. This is his first fight of 2017. Opposite Aldo will be Max Holloway . “Blessed” took the scenic route through the featherweight division, compiling 10 straight wins across three years. That winning streak is the longest in the division's history -- Aldo and McGregor are tied for second place with seven straight wins -- and the sixth-longest in the history of the entire UFC.

But White is confident a 50-50 split between the UFC and McGregor (21-3 MMA, 9-1 UFC) – who recently ironed out a deal for one side of the fight – and Mayweather (49-0 boxing) is “pretty fair.” And he’s now giving the fight a 75 percent chance of happening.

Light Heavyweights Jimi Manuwa, Volkan Oezdemir to Meet at UFC 214 in Anaheim

Jimi Manuwa will lock horns with Volkan Oezdemir at UFC 214 in Anaheim on July 29. The Las Vegas-based promotion confirmed the light heavyweight bout on Wednesday. UFC 214 takes place at the Honda Center and is headlined by a 205-pound title rematch between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier . UFC President Dana White previously revealed that Manuwa would be on the card as a backup plan in the event that either Jones or Cormier had to pull out of the main event. After knocking out the highly-regarded Misha Cirkunov in 28 seconds at UFC Fight Night 109, Oezdemir called for a showdown with Manuwa, and now his request has been granted. Manuwa, 37, has won three of his last four Octagon appearances, including back-to-back knockouts of Corey Anderson and Ovince St. Preux . The former British Association of Mixed Martial Arts standout is 6-2 during his promotional tenure, with his only defeats coming to former title challengers Anthony Johnson and Alexander Gustafsson . “Poster Boy” has finished 15 of his 17 career triumphs by knockout or technical knockout.

Ortiz-Sandoval, Bravo-Gruetzemacher Added to UFC Fight Night 114 in Mexico City

A pair of bouts have been added to the UFC Fight Night 114 lineup, as Dustin Ortiz will square off against Hector Sandoval at flyweight, while Martin Bravo will meet Chris Gruetzemacher at featherweight. The promotion’s Spanish branch announced the pairings on Wednesday. UFC Fight Night 114 takes place at Mexico City Arena in Mexico City on Aug. 5 and is headlined by a 125-pound showdown between Sergio Pettis and Brandon Moreno . Ortiz has lost three of his last four bouts, including a second-round submission defeat to Brandon Moreno at UFC Fight Night 108 on April 22. Sandoval enters the matchup on the strength of back-to-back triumphs over Matt Schnell and Fredy Serrano in the Octagon. Bravo improved to 11-0 with a second-round stoppage of Claudio Puelles in his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 98 this past November. Gruetzemacher, meanwhile, had a 12-fight winning streak snapped when he was submitted in the second-round by Chas Skelly at UFC Fight Night 104 on Feb. 4.

Two Title Bouts Anchor Lion Fight 37

Las Vegas-based Muay Thai promotion Lion Fight returns to Foxwoods Resort Casino on July 28 with what is expected to be another excellent night of action. The promotion announced Wednesday that two of its world titles will be at stake in the featured bouts of Lion Fight 37. Jo Nattawut is set to defend his super welterweight title against iconic Thai fighter Petchtanong Banchamek in the main event. “Smokin” Jo (58-7-2) has already defended his super welterweight title three times, having turned away Cedric Manhoef, Hasan Toy and Kengsiam Nor Srupeung. But standing in his way is Banchamek, who has an amazing 345 victories under his belt, along with multiple world titles. The Lion Fight 37 co-feature will see Paul Banasiak and Chip Moraza-Pollard go head-to-head for the vacant cruiserweight title. Both men have been impressive in their Lion Fight showings and are primed to hoist the belt over their head with a win. In other televised action, Amine Ballafrikh will take on Johncy Lindor in a lightweight battle; Alexander Olave will collide with Eric Rocha at welterweight; and Jafar Toshev will lock horns with Geoffrey Then, also at lightweight.

Jose Aldo’s Coach Says ‘we have a plan’ for Rematch with Conor McGregor

“I think Aldo has done a lot for this sport. Aldo beat them for so long and did everything right. He’s a good kid. He don’t talk s— about anybody. All the time, he’s helping people. He’s a good guy. Maybe this sport does not like good guys. But just in the sport, not the marketing side of it, I think Aldo deserves his rematch more than any champion that has ever been before him. He lost the title, came back and fought a great fighter like Frankie Edgar, accepted a title defense against Max Holloway who is really, really good, and then before that, he challenged the guy that nobody – nobody — wants to fight at 155, and that’s Khabib. He’s done everything he can to deserve this rematch with Conor.”

The Bottom Line: The Elephant in the Room

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * The UFC 212 main event on Saturday is a juicy matchup for MMA enthusiasts. It pits the greatest featherweight of all-time, returning from handing the great Frankie Edgar his first loss since 2013, against a surging 25-year-old on one of the longest winning streaks in Ultimate Fighting Championship history and looking to prove he is now one of the sport’s elite competitors. It’s a worthy pay-per-view main event and easily one of the best fights of the year thus far. Unfortunately for Jose Aldo and Max Holloway , a conspicuous cloud will hang over the proceedings in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It’s a boisterous, brash Irish cloud from which Aldo and Holloway will struggle to escape. There’s a featherweight championship and an interim featherweight championship being merged, but they are unable to fully obscure the reality that they are fighting to capture a title that Conor McGregor won in 13 seconds and then elected not to defend.

Episode No. 7 recap: 'The Ultimate Fighter 25: Redemption'

Round 1 – Stevenson lands a pair of jabs to open the fight. Edwards is firing back with multi-strike combinations but walks into the clinch. They break, and Edwards lands an uppercut that backs up Stevenson. Edwards is landing combinations, and Stevenson chooses to close the distance and clinch. Edwards breaks away, though, and continues to tag Stevenson with short hooks. Stevenson goes back to the jab and sticks a few to Edwards’ face. Edwards controls the center of the octagon and tees off with a number of strikes that land. Stevenson looks to clinch again but eats a pair of knees to the face for his trouble. He pushes Edwards against the fence, and Edwards grabs his neck to drop down for a guillotine. He can’t finish, and Stevenson escapes into top position. Edwards quickly uses the fence to stand back up and get free. Edwards is now landing his jab, but Stevenson is moving forward. Stevenson lands two leg kicks, but Edwards is attacking with much more volume and landing the better blows. Stevenson shoots in for another takedown and briefly grounds Edwards. The fighters return to their feet, though, and the striking exchanges resume until the end of the round.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Two New Lucky No. 7s

Our latest rankings shake-up comes courtesy from dual sites in Europe, on either side of the Baltic Sea. At KSW 39 “Colosseum” in Warsaw, Poland, Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki put an estimated 58,000 fans inside of PGE Narodowy Stadium for a truly historic MMA card, one that reportedly topped the Ultimate Fighting Championship's all-time attendance record of 56,214 for UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia. More importantly, hot Brazilian prospect Ariane Lipski became the first-ever KSW women's flyweight champion, as she slapped an armbar on Romania's Diane Belbita in the first round. With her win, the dynamic Lipski has another stoppage on her resume, a piece of hardware and the attention of promoters like the UFC and Bellator MMA that are looking to bolster their 125-pound women's rosters. Plus, Lipski moves from ninth to the seven slot in our rankings. A day later on the other side of Baltic, UFC Fight Night 109 hit the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm with a headlining focus on 205 pounds. In the main event, our No. 2 light heavyweight Alexander Gustafsson handled business, knocking out sixth-ranked Glover Texieira in scintillating style, dominating him for 21 minutes before putting away the Brazilian with a brilliant trio of uppercuts and a right hook.

Beating the Odds: UFC Fight Night ‘Gustafsson vs. Teixeira’

The oddsmakers had little faith in Damir Hadzovic , and for two rounds, they appeared to be right on the money in their assessment. One strike changed everything. Hadzovic -- a +239 underdog, per BetDSI.com -- knocked out Bellator MMA Season 10 lightweight tournament winner Marcin Held and kept the Polish leg lock ace winless under the Ultimate Fighting Championship banner at UFC Fight Night “Gustafsson vs. Teixeira” on Sunday at the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm. A perfectly timed knee strike did the trick, as Held (-289) packed his bags seven seconds into Round 3. Held controlled the first 10 minutes and was well ahead on the scorecards at the time of detonation. In fact, two of the three cageside judges awarded him 10-8s for his work in the middle stanza. Held struck for repeated takedowns, floated from full guard and half guard to side control and full mount, made smooth transitions to the back and fished for chokes. At the start of the third round, Hazdovic stepped backward, caught Held rolling for a leg lock and froze him with a front-leg knee to the head for an immediate stoppage.
