Knee injury scratches UFC vet Matt Hamill from WSOF 11

Hamill, 37, signed with WSOF seven months after his exit from the UFC, which came on the heels of a 1-3 run in the octagon. He retired from competition in 2011 following a lackluster TKO loss to current No. 1 contender Alex Gustafsson, but he returned one year later with a decision win over Roger Hollett at UFC 152.

I know, I know, we here at CagePotato hate everything MMA, UFC, and especially, T-U-F . We’ve had it out for The Ultimate Fighter from the get-go — the “get-go” being somewhere around season 15. We’re just h8ers who can’t appreci8 TUF  because we’re all overw8 noobs who can’t get d8s, don’t trane UFC, etc. And that’s fine, but even the biggest TUF apologist would find it hard to declare that this season has been memorable in any way whatsoever (although I’m sure a few of you will try in the comments section). The fights have sucked, Penn and Edgar have been non-factors at best, and the fights have sucked. Did I mention the fights have sucked? Because they have.

New Bellator Rule Allows Former Tourney Winners to Fight for Title at Any Time

Bjorn Rebney believes that Bellator’s new rule regarding tournaments is a positive. | Keith Mills/ Bellator MMA has once again altered the rules behind the “Toughest Tournament in Sports.” The promotion issued a release on Thursday stating that any fighter who has previously won a Bellator tournament will maintain permanent eligibility to fight for a title without having to enter another bracket down the road. “Just like we’ve done since day one, any fighter who wins ‘The Toughest Tournament in Sports’ will still be guaranteed a world title fight,” Rebney said in a release. “The addition I’m making here, that I’m really excited about, is if you’ve won a tournament, you’ll join an elite group of athletes who we can grant a world title fight to at any time. “For example, if you win a tournament, fight for the world title and lose, you forever remain in that elite group of fighters who can be awarded another shot at the title,” he continued. “We will place some fighters back into tournaments, while others may lose a world title fight, win some non-tournament fights and be awarded another shot at the title.

Free $500 UFC 174 Kountermove fantasy cash tourney

Players use a $25,000 artificial salary cap to draft 5 fighters from the card before each event begins. Eachfighter has a salary designated by Kountermove -- salaries range from $3,000 to $8,000. The winners are determined based on how the fight plays out rather than simply a fight's outcome (pick'em format). Kountermove calculates a fighter's fantasy score based on the number of strikes, takedowns, submissions, dominant positions, and rounds won. Scoring data from the fights flows into the site in near real-time, so players can monitor their teams as the event happens. The data used in calculating a fighter's score is provided by UFC's official stats provider, FightMetric.

Bellator makes major adjustment for tournament champions

For those fighters who've already won a tournament at any point in Bellator history, or for those who win any in the future, they move into a position where earning victories outside of the tournament structure enables them to claim a title shot at Bellator's discretion. Those bouts can be against other fighters in Bellator who belong to this pool, but defeating only them is not essential. Fighters in this pool can face recent acquisitions, and should those previous tournament winners look impressive enough in victory, they can earn a title shot.

Gamer’s Verdict: EA Sports UFC

THQ’s “UFC Undisputed” series has been the only MMA video game in town for the past few years. While solid, it was hindered by a deeply flawed submission system and did not completely capture the atmosphere of an Ultimate Fighting Championship event. Enter EA Sports, which swooped in, purchased the UFC license from THQ in 2012 and began to work on the latest Ultimate Fighting Championship game for the next generation of consoles. Its previous attempt at an MMA game, “ EA Sports MMA ” in 2010, had excellent gameplay mechanics but suffered without having licensed fighters from the largest mixed martial artist organization in the world. It failed miserably in the sales department. As the release date for “ EA Sports UFC ” draws near, EA has ever so slowly pulled back the curtain on the game. We have seen beautiful screenshots and some video, but that does not mean much until you get your hands on the game. EA Sports unveiled the full playable version of “EA UFC” to a group of MMA journalists at a private function. To some, this was foreign ground, as the nuances of gaming are better served for their children than themselves.

UFC 174’s Tyron Woodley thinks he can still swipe title shot from Brown-Lawler

“I think the best performance is going to get a title shot,” Woodley said. “My goal is really to focus on beating Rory MacDonald in a dominant fashion – to go up to Vancouver and do my thing. Everything else, whether they give me a shot or not, I’m eventually going to win the world title. I’m going to be in the title picture.

Lance Palmer Ready for WSOF 10 After First Pro Defeat: “Every Fight I Always Learn Something”

“Just from my background, I’ve always been competing my entire life,” the 26 year-old furthered, while discussing his defeat to Karakhanyan, who submitted Palmer with a third round, guillotine choke. “I learn from a win or a loss. The loss teaches you that you were caught in that position. Even in the fights you win, you could be in a position, which could be considered bad positions, but you don’t get stuck there, you don’t lose the fight from there. In most fights there are positions where you could do better.”

Alistair Overeem Opts for Cautious Approach in Returning From Elbow Surgery

Alistair Overeem wants to be fully healthy before he returns to the Octagon. | Dave Mandel/ ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Alistair Overeem had surgery in April, the first time the Dutch heavyweight had gone under the knife in nearly 20 years of combat sports training and competition. After such a fortunate streak of good health, it is not surprising that the former Strikeforce and Dream champion is taking the recovery process slowly. “The surgery is healing up well. [I had] bone spurs in both elbows and an ulnar nerve entrapment, which was a long surgery -- 11 hours,” Overeem recently told “It’s pretty tough, but it was necessary. My arms were bothering me a lot for the last few years.” Overeem has not competed since taking a lopsided unanimous decision victory over Frank Mir at UFC 169 in February. After that bout, “The Demolition Man” knew that something had to be done. “I remember in the Mir fight [thinking] I’ve really got to get this checked out,” he said. “After the Mir fight, [my] arms [were] not bothering [me], so you forget about it.

Dana White hints at more non-UFC, combat sports events headed to Fight Pass

UFC President Dana White strongly hinted Thursday at a media scrum before UFC 174 that the deal with Invicta events airing on Fight Pass is just the beginning of working with other promotions. "We're going to keep adding content to this and that was one of them," White said. "They don't have a television deal and women's MMA is very important to us. The girl who runs that show (Invicta promoter Shannon Knapp) is sort of a one-woman band, trying to do everything she can. We thought it would be good for Fight Pass. We're not invested in it. We don't own a piece of it." He also said while the UFC would help promote the shows, they would not be producing them. "No, it's her show," he said." No date has been announced for the first event, but Knapp and Marshall Zelaznik, UFC's Chief Content Officer, had pegged the late summer for a first show. But White indicated they are talking to other companies as well for Fight Pass content. While he wouldn't elaborate on it past that, he did indicate it was not limited to MMA. "You might see a lot of combat sports and other things," White said.

Dana White: Releasing Jason High after UFC Fight Night 42 was 'no brainer'

High, who re-joined the UFC after a 3-0 stint with Strikeforce, suffered a submission loss to Erick Silva in his return to the organization this past year. However, the former welterweight, who had a one-fight stint with the UFC in 2010, then picked up wins over James Head and Anthony Lapsley as part of an overall 9-1 run.

Solving Styles: Reverse Engineering Archie Moore and the Lock, part 2

Now, before we explore some of these paths, I should point out that this is by no means a complete layout of Moore's system. In this chart we have his set responses to three basic punches--the jab, cross, and hook, and each path assumes that the opponent has led with the jab first. It doesn't account for such subtleties as range and angle, which would play a huge part in determining Moore's punch selection. Don't let this fool you into thinking that Moore was at a loss if his man started his assault with a hook, or a lead right; likewise, don't let the fact that my chart doesn't include Archie's various leads and feints lead you to believe that he was strictly a counter fighter. In 219 trips to the prizefighting ring, Moore made it very clear that he had a plan for every eventuality, and a tool to account for every possible opening.

UFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. Khabilov - Salaries

I always feel a small sense of closure when the final pay numbers for an event are released. Even if it's not, in fact, any sort of difinitive end to the news, notes, or questions raised by an event, the release of the salaries is sort of my refocusing moment. With the UFC running however many hundreds of shows they're running right now, the ability to put one to bed feels like even more of a luxury. And it is with that, that I give you the final salary numbers from UFC Fight Night: Henderson vs. Khabilov .

Twitter Mailbag: Is this really the end for Chael Sonnen?

Invicta FC puts on some good events, so much so that it managed to make online-only streams seem like a semi-workable business model even when everyone said it was doomed to fail. Considering the niche audience that Invicta caters to, it’s probably better off on UFC Fight Pass than it would be as another schedule-filler on AXS TV. Plus it can’t hurt the UFC’s efforts to build real, competitive women’s divisions that have more to offer than just the Ronda Rousey show.

A lot of YouTubers tend to upload knockout videos that are 8 minutes long and feature two to three knockouts. This is terrible. So don’t bother with any other allegedly ‘hilarious’ and / or ‘brutal’ knockout highlight videos. Watch this one, which crams over 25 knockouts into less than two minutes. Some compelling ass-kicking music and 1080p rendering really lets you enjoy watching Alexander Gustafsson recreate such famous KO poses as the Etim, the Salmon, and the Quarry.
