Reasons to watch Fight Night Ottawa

When Stephen Thompson dismantled former welterweight champion Johny Hendricks in spectacular KO fashion, the title shot whispers began to permeate. But like most great championship stories, “Wonderboy” must overcome one final challenge to reach the top of the mountain for the chance at his storybook ending. MacDonald fell to champion Robbie Lawler in a war for the ages, but a win against Wonderboy puts him right back at the front of the line for a rematch. With one of the most shocking domination jobs in recent memory, Thompson’s first-round finish against Hendricks made everybody in the MMA world take a step back and recognize.

First Bio-Pic Viewing Brings Former UFC Champion Jose Aldo to Tears in Brazil

“Stronger than the World,” the bio-pic chronicling the life and career of former Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight titleholder Jose Aldo recently premiered in Brazil and included showings in Rio de Janeiro. Of the 12 local theaters screening the film, six were virtual sellouts, as journalists, MMA fighters and actors were all on hand, along with Aldo, his mother, Rocilene Soccoro Souza, and his wife, Viviane Oliveira. Aldo admitted he cried the first time he saw the film. “There’s no way not to cry,” he said. “It’s not only for me or fight fans. I think everybody will cry when they see the way story was told. It’s hard to describe the emotion of seeing the history of your life being shown to all your people. Soon, the UFC will bring it to American theaters. I thanked director Afonso Poyrat for all the care he took with the details.” The film does not take a route most would expect, forgoing some of Aldo’s career as a mixed martial artist and choosing instead to focus on his life story. It details his relationship with an alcoholic father who was his greatest hero at times and his biggest villain at others, the internal fight with his own demons, the time he spent cleaning toilets at the academy in order to train and the decision to shun powerful drug dealers when he moved into his own house in a slum.

James Krause withdraws from The Ultimate Fighter 23 Finale, UFC seeks new opponent for Ross Pearson

Krause has won back-to-back fights after a rough stretch that saw him go 1-3. But then he dropped fights to Bobby Green, Jorge Masvidal and Valmir Lazaro before rebounding with a submission of Daron Cruickshank and, most recently, a decision over Shane Campbell at February’s UFC Fight Night 83 in Pittsburgh.

Video: Conor McGregor Hypes Up Irish National Team for Euro 2016 Campaign

Here is that rallying cry from @thenotoriousMMA to Ireland ahead of the start of #euro2016. We are here to take over — RTÉ Soccer (@RTEsoccer) June 13, 2016 Conor McGregor has issued a rallying cry for Ireland’s national soccer team. The UFC featherweight titleholder was featured in a video from Irish broadcaster RTE on Monday, offering words of support for his countrymen ahead of their UEFA Euro 2016 opening match against Sweden. “This is where we introduce the footballing world to the new Ireland,” said McGregor. “An Ireland that makes no apologies for its success, and no excuses for its failures.” Watch 100+ Channels On Pluto TV McGregor also repeated the words which have become his catchphrase during his UFC run. “Always remember: We are not here to take part; we are here to take over.” Ireland’s Wes Hoolahan gave his country the lead early in the second half of Monday’s game, but the match would end in a 1-1 draw after Ciaran Clark headed home an own-goal in the 72nd minute.

Boxing: Heavyweight Titlist Deontay Wilder to Fight Chris Arreola on July 16

Unbeaten heavyweight knockout artist Deontay Wilder will be back in action next month, as he is set to defend his WBC title for the fourth time. Premier Boxing Champions on Monday announced that the “Bronze Bomber” will meet two-time title challenger Chris Arreola on July 16. The showdown will take place inside Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Alabama, and will be televised live on Fox. The PBC on Fox broadcast will begin at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT. Wilder captured his title by dominating Bermane Stiverne over 12 rounds in January 2015, winning an impressive and lopsided unanimous decision. In 36 professional fights, Stiverne thus far is the only man that the Olympic bronze medalist has not knocked out. Wilder has vanquished his last three foes since winning the title, showcasing improved boxing skills and movement to coincide with his frightening power. In Arreola, Wilder meets a foe known for taking obscene amounts of punishment which, in turn, leads to exciting brawls inside the squared circle. It’s a far stretch from Alexander Povetkin, whom Wilder was supposed to meet on May 21 before the Russian failed a pre-fight drug screen.

Opinion: High Stakes in the Shadow of UFC 200

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** UFC 200 is big. It was big at conception, but now, a little less than a month away, it’s bigger than ever. A total of nine current or former Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholders will be fighting, alongside two former champions from other major organizations. Three more former title contenders and two “Ultimate Fighter” winners are also on the card. Of course, the core of the event lies in the three championship bouts it boasts, and the return of Brock Lesnar has been so widely covered that I need not say anything else about it. Yes, UFC 200 is big indeed. So large is its shadow that if you weren’t aware of the high-stakes headliner at UFC Fight Night “MacDonald vs. Thompson” on Saturday in Canada, I wouldn’t blame you. It’s important whenever the two top-ranked fighters in a division square off, but the significance of the Stephen Thompson - Rory MacDonald main event extends beyond their rankings.

14 Full Committee | Education & the Workforce Committee

The House Education and the Workforce Committee oversees programs that affect all Americans, from early learning and higher education to job training and retirement security. The following programs and policies fall within the committee’s jurisdiction:

With Ali Act, a long battle for MMA's future is just beginning

“The Muhammad Ali Expansion Act will turn the current business model on its head for many promoters,” Magraken wrote in an email to MMAjunkie. “This will not be limited to the UFC, but also other professional MMA promoters such as Bellator MMA and WSOF, not to mention smaller regional promoters. Additionally this will impact other combat sports promoters such as GLORY and Lion Fight Promotions, Bellator Kickboxing and even professional grappling promoters.”

The Bottom Line: Rory MacDonald’s Path Back

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. *** With the passing of the legendary Muhammad Ali, there was much discussion about the latter stages of his life when Parkinson’s disease took its terrible toll on the man. There isn’t definitive proof one way or another, but most believe the disease came as a result of his many years in the ring. Specifically, attention focuses on some of the most brutal fights of his career, against the likes of Joe Frazier and Larry Holmes. The “Thrilla in Manila” was such a grueling battle for Ali and Frazier that even in victory, it set up Ali for future peril. This is a common thread in the sport of boxing, where boxers will have singular fights that change the courses of their careers. Jermain Taylor appeared to be embarking on a special career when he ran into a buzzsaw that was Kelly Pavlik. After a vicious knockout loss to Pavlik, Taylor never appeared to be the same fighter.

Former Bellator MMA and Legacy Fighting Championship talent Ivan Cole reportedly shot and killed himself in a Dallas apartment on Saturday. According to a post on CBS DFW’s Facebook page, Cole allegedly killed himself while playing Russian roulette. No further details regarding the incident were immediately available. A statement on the Dallas Police Department’s website confirms that Ivan Robert-Earnest Cole was found dead after officers responded to a shooting at the 13700 block of Montfort Drive at approximately 7:31 a.m. local time. Cole was 25 years old. Watch 100+ Channels On Pluto TV “The death of Mr. Cole will be classified as an unexplained death pending the results of the autopsy,” the statement read. A native of New Orleans, Cole compiled a 2-3 MMA record over the course of a career that began in 2012. He competed once for Legacy FC, losing a split decision to Evan Martinez in August 2012 and once for Bellator, suffering a first-round submission loss to George Pacurariu on March 27, 2015 in what turned out to be Cole’s last fight.

Bellator 158 Update: Alex Reid vs. Manuel Garcia Added to July 16 Event in London

English middleweight Alex Reid will tangle with Spain’s Manuel Garcia next month as part of Bellator MMA ’s British debut. The three-round, 185-pound matchup was announced Monday by Atak Promotions, a company working with Bellator to promote the upcoming event. Reid, 40, has not stepped into the cage in more than three years and has competed in mixed martial arts only three times since 2007. “The Reidernator” began a professional kickboxing career in 2009 and compiled a record of 3-1 with one knockout. In 2010, Reid appeared on and won the British version of “Celebrity Big Brother.” Watch 100+ Channels On Pluto TV Reid has stated that he is fighting again because he is more than half a million dollars in debt and said he is “petrified about getting back in the ring.” Recently, imprisoned bank robber and onetime UFC fighter Lee Murray has reportedly expressed interest in fighting Reid. Garcia, 43, will enter the bout on a three-fight losing skid.

Andre Pederneiras Sees Renan Barao Vying for UFC Featherweight Title Someday Soon

Nova Uniao frontman Andre Pederneiras foresees a bright future for Renan Barao in the Ultimate Fighting Championship featherweight division. Barao made an unsuccessful debut at 145 pounds on May 29, as he lost a unanimous decision to Jeremy Stephens in the UFC Fight Night “Almeida vs. Garbrandt” co-main event at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Upon landing back home in Rio de Janeiro, Pederneiras discussed the former bantamweight champion’s prospects in a new weight class. “Me and Jair Lourenco were expecting a tough fight against Stephens, and that’s what happened,” Pederneiras told “Barao had a great first round, lost the second and got close in the third round. It was a great restart for his career, and I truly believe in a few more years, he will be fighting for the belt.” Pederneiras scoffed at the idea of an eventual confrontation between Barao and Nova Uniao teammate Jose Aldo . The 29-year-old Aldo will face Frankie Edgar for the interim featherweight championship at UFC 200 on July 9.

We are Brendan and Bryan from The Fighter And The Kid podcast. Ask Us Anything! • /r/IAmA

Maybe but with Bryan's help you are selling out theaters. Only a very small handful of the all time greats have done MSG. It takes most comedians 15-20 years to get to sell out theaters (that's if they even make it that long), so the 1000 people shows you've been doing are a better analogy in my opinion. Not to take anything away from your hard work, but you got to jump that timeline because of your relationship with Bryan and your past success. He's doing the same thing, but assuming he's taking it seriously and working hard shouldn't we support his efforts?

Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson will 'demand' title shot with a win over Rory MacDonald

"To be honest, I really was disappointed," Thompson told FOX Sports. "After going out there and finishing Johny Hendricks, the former welterweight champion, a guy who has been 10 rounds with Robbie Lawler and the Robbie Lawler win being controversial and finishing him in the first round, I was kind of disappointed. I wanted that title shot. I was swearing that they would give it to me, but sometimes you've got to go out and prove it to the fans and the UFC that you're ready for it. There's only one guy in front of me now -- Rory MacDonald.

What to Watch For: Bellator 156

They are former training partners whose chosen profession has made them enemies once again. The Bellator MMA bantamweight title will hang in the balance when champion Marcos Galvao meets challenger Eduardo Dantas in the Bellator 156 headliner on Friday at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California. The Brazilians will front a four-fight main card that features a welterweight tilt pitting onetime Tachi Palace Fights titleholder Chidi Njokuani against Thiago Jambo Goncalves in the co-main event and a pair of middleweight battles, as Brandon Halsey faces John Salter and Chris Honeycutt confronts Mikkel Parlo . Galvao has rattled off four straight wins since his technical knockout loss to Dantas at Bellator 89 a little more than three years ago. The 33-year-old Long Island MMA rep last competed at Bellator 135 in March 2015, when he submitted Joe Warren with a second-round kneebar to capture gold at 135 pounds. It was the first submission victory of the multiple-time Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion’s 24-fight MMA career.

Josh Copeland is a former ministry student whose nickname is “Cuddly Bear,” but do not let those facades fool you. He is quietly putting together an impressive resume as a professional mixed martial artist. The Idaho-born Copeland has a laid-back Midwestern manner about him and never truly planned on throwing his hat in the MMA ring. Copeland was raised in Arkansas before moving to Fort Worth, Texas, to study youth ministry at Dallas Baptist College. It was there in 2005 that he first tried his hand at Brazilian jiu-jitsu after a college friend asked him to try a class. “I really enjoyed BJJ,” Copeland told “It was a fun way to stay in shape and help keep the weight off.” Copeland in that gym befriended Justin Wren , who was preparing for a fight. Joseph Elegele Keeps Pace with Big Win Over Phil Le Greco in PBC on Bounce Headliner

Joseph Elegele started boxing when he was 11. It has been a part of him for 20 years. Even when he didn’t have padded gloves on. The 31-year-old from Melbourne, Florida, grew up with nine brothers and sisters and there was always something to fight about. Skirmishes tended to erupt every minute over the bathroom and who was wearing whose clothes. Elegele wanted to keep on fighting, but something over the last few years caused him to wonder about his future: his last five fights. Elegele was 3-2 over that span, losing a technical decision to Aaron Martinez and a unanimous eight-rounder to Javier Molina. Phil Lo Greco can remember the day he first began boxing. It was Jan. 21, 1995, and he was about to turn 11. It was always Lo Greco’s dream to be a world champion, and on Sunday, he found himself trying to keep that dream alive against Elegele’s future in a 10-round welterweight bout from the Lakeland Events Center in Lakeland, Florida. There was just one gaping problem Lo Greco faced. Each time he stepped up in competition, he came bounding back down to earth with a loss.
