Andrei Arlovski: 5 Defining Moments

He has worn many hats during his stellar 18-year career: blue-chip prospect, top-flight contender, undisputed champion, shopworn journeyman and resurgent veteran. Andrei Arlovski has remained a factor at the highest levels of the sport for the better part of two decades, his run reaching its pinnacle in 2005, when he captured the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight crown. Wins over Roy Nelson , Vladimir Matyushenko , Ben Rothwell , Antonio Silva , Fabricio Werdum and Frank Mir highlight a resume that includes 20 finishes, 13 of them inside one round. Arlovski will attempt to halt a four-fight losing streak at UFC Fight Night “Holm vs. Correia” on Saturday, when he faces former M-1 Global champion Marcin Tybura at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. In a career brimming with defining moments, here are five that stand out: 1. Opportunity Knocks A motorcycle accident in September 2004 left Mir with a broken femur and torn knee ligaments, forcing him to vacate the UFC heavyweight championship. The move made room for Arlovski and Tim Sylvia , as they squared off for the interim title at UFC 51 on Feb.

The Bottom Line: The Ultimate Must Win

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of Sherdog.com, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * If you’d charted out different potential courses for Holly Holm just 19 months ago when she knocked out Ronda Rousey in front of over 50,000 people to win the Ultimate Fighting Championship women’s bantamweight crown, it would be hard to come up with a realistic worst-case scenario much more discouraging than what has actually transpired. Many thought Holm’s win over Rousey was a passing of the guard and that Holm had finally fully adapted her athleticism and striking skill to MMA. Big things seemed like they might be on the horizon. The likeable Holm was on top of the world and the recipient of a hometown parade in her honor before it all came crashing down. Looking back, when Miesha Tate choked out “The Preacher’s Daughter” to take away Holm’s title, it was the high point of the Albuquerque, New Mexico, native’s last three fights.

Sherdog’s Top 10: Longest Bellator MMA Title Reigns - Top 10

Thirty men and women have captured Bellator MMA championships since the promotion made its debut in 2009. Some title reigns were brief. Daniel Straus lasted just 133 days during his first stay on the featherweight throne, as he struck gold at 145 pounds with a five-round unanimous decision over Pat Curran at Bellator 106 on Nov. 2, 2013. Curran returned the favor a little more than four months later and did so in more decisive fashion in the Bellator 112 main event, where he submitted Straus with a rear-naked choke 4:46 into the fifth round. Patricio Freire dethroned Curran 176 days later. Alexander Volkov , Emanuel Newton , Brandon Halsey , Eddie Alvarez and Joe Warren also put together short title reigns that spanned less than a calendar year. Staying power has not been an issue for other champions. The latest installment in the Sherdog Top 10 series focuses on the longest title reigns -- in days -- in Bellator history. *** HONORABLE MENTIONS: Pat Curran (604 days), Rafael Carvalho (600 days), Alexander Shlemenko (597), Daniel Straus (578 days), Joe Warren (554 days), Zach Makovsky (547 days), Will Brooks (546 days).

Wanderlei Silva Claims He Skipped Press Conference to Avoid Altercation with Chael Sonnen

Wanderlei Silva didn’t want to follow in the footsteps of fellow Brazilian Cristiane Justino . According to “The Axe Murderer,” that’s why he backed out of a promotional press conference with rival Chael Sonnen scheduled for Los Angeles last week. At the time, a Bellator MMA press release announced that Silva was “under the weather” and couldn’t attend. As it turns out, that wasn’t exactly true. “The truth I didn’t go to the press conference I didn’t want to do what Cyborg did when that girl talked s—t about her,” Silva said during a conference call on Tuesday. “If I saw Chael, I don’t know what is going to happen. I’m professional, but this guy has crossed the line with me and is playing with the wrong guy.” Silva is referring to the altercation between Justino and Angela Magana at the UFC Fighter’s Retreat in May. Justino confronted Magana regarding a social media feud between the two fighters and was caught hitting her antagonist on video. “Cyborg” was cited for misdemeanor battery by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and could be facing six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if the district attorney pursues the charges against her.

Bethe Correia: Ex-champ, fellow UFC Fight Night 111 headliner Holly Holm overestimates herself

“The pressure is on her,” Correia told MMAjunkie ahead of Saturday’s headliner at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. “She’s the one coming off three losses. She’s the one who they want to see turn things around. They want to see a UFC ex-champ show her MMA. I think she’s a striker who has to adapt it all to MMA. She has too much information coming in and she’s trying to piece her game together. She’s, perhaps, getting more lost than finding herself.

Kevin Lee: UFC officials not mad I popped Michael Chiesa at press conference

“They understand it wasn’t on me; I wasn’t the one to do it,” he said of the scrap, which brought some heat to the June 25 fight at Chesapeake Arena in Oklahoma City, Okla. “(Chiesa) was the one to stand up and say he was going to slap the (expletive) out of me. When you say that, and then you walk up on them, what do you think is going to happen? The UFC isn’t stupid.”

Matches to Make After UFC Fight Night ‘Lewis vs. Hunt’

Mark Hunt beat back age and mileage one more time. The 2001 K-1 World Grand Prix winner kept his name relevant in the Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight division, as he turned away Derrick Lewis with fourth-round punches in the UFC Fight Night 110 main event on Saturday at Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand. Lewis succumbed to blows 3:51 into Round 4, his six-fight winning streak at an end. Hunt denied all three of the former Legacy Fighting Championship titleholder’s takedown attempts and slowly increased the pace and intensity of his strikes. According to FightMetric data, he outlanded Lewis 16-10 in the third round and 24-13 in the fourth. Late in Round 4, Hunt pushed his fading counterpart to the fence and unleashed a string of punches and elbows. Lewis doubled over and did not respond to referee Marc Goddard ’s calls to fight back, prompting the stoppage. In the aftermath of UFC Fight Night “Lewis vs. Hunt,” here are six matches that ought to be made: Mark Hunt vs. Andrei Arlovski-Marcin Tybura winner: If it has not reached universal heights already, the reverence for Hunt grows with each improbable victory inside the Octagon.

BJJ: How to be in control when your foe is standing and you're playing guard by @gallerr

So your opponent stood up, and you don't know what to do to control them. Standing, working outside the range of your guard, your opponent has plenty of freedom to start investing in a guard pass. In case you don't want to stand up and try for takedowns, you have a few options to control the opponent, doing the shin-to-shin guard, the sitting guard, the X-guard and others. Watch this video to get familiarized with some of the options. #jiujitsu #bjj #brazilianjiujitsu

Miesha Tate explains why Bethe Correia isn't on the same level as Holly Holm | FOX Sports

“Holly Holm, if you look at her fights, Ronda [Rousey] and everybody since have been really, really tough fights,” Tate explained when speaking to FOX Sports. “We have Ronda Rousey, who was undefeated and nobody could even touch her and Holly Holm was the first person to not only finish Ronda but make her lose an entire round. Then she fought me, who became a world champion and then she fought Valentina Shevchenko, who almost beat Amanda Nunes, she won that third round and it was close. She’s really evolved in her game and improved her grappling, she just submitted Julianna Pena and now she’s fighting for the world title. Then Germaine de Randamie, who stylistically presents all the problems you could say someone could present for Holly, being ‘a better striker’ that was a scary fight for Holly.
