As silence fell in Rio, Max Holloway ended the disputed era of the UFC featherweight title

That ought to make Holloway the one true champ featherweight. It also ought to give hope to all those other contenders who saw their title hopes dead-end at Aldo. It’s a new day at 145 pounds, thanks to a little violent upheaval. Everybody gets fresh hope for another chance.

Claudia Gadelha: Nobody But Joanna Jedrzejczyk is a Challenge for Me at Strawweight

Two of the last three strawweight title challengers squared off at UFC 212 on Saturday night, and the end result wasn’t very competitive. Claudia Gadelha made short work of Karolina Kowalkiewicz in Rio de Janeiro, submitting her Polish foe with a rear-naked choke 3:03 into round one. For Gadelha, the victory arrived because she was willing to leave the comfort zone of her longtime training home of Nova Uniao. That was far from easy. “I feel great. Like I’ve been saying, I’ve changed a lot. And I had to challenge myself for that,” Gadelha said on Fox Sports 1. “It wasn’t easy. It was very hard. I had eight weeks camp in Albuquerque. I missed my family. I had to do that to become the new Claudia.” Gadelha initially relocated to Luttrell-Yee MMA in Albuquerque, N.M., prior to a unanimous decision win over Cortney Casey at UFC Fight Night 100 this past November. In addition to working with coaches Chris Luttrell and Ray Yee, Gadelha supplemented her training at the renowned Jackson-Wink MMA gym. Leaving Brazil and Nova Uniao was essential to her growth, Gadelha said.

UFC Flyweight Ian McCall Granted TUE for IV Use, Cleared of Anti-Doping Violation

Ian McCall has been cleared of an anti-doping violation for receiving an intravenous infusion of a non-prohibited substance this past February, USADA announced Friday. The UFC flyweight was granted a retroactive therapeutic use exemption (TUE) for the saline solution IV he received on Feb. 10 at the recommendation of his physician. McCall was supposed to face Jarred Brooks at UFC 208 in Brooklyn on Feb. 11 but was removed from the card after being transported to a local hospital with gastrointestinal issues. According to the UFC’s Anti-Doping Policy, all IVs of more than 50mL per six-hour period are prohibited unless an athlete receives a TUE in advance or “if the infusion is legitimately received in the course of hospital admissions, surgical procedures, or clinical investigations.” “After a thorough investigation of the circumstances surrounding the potential violation, which included the retroactive TUE application process, USADA determined that the athlete had a diagnosed acute medical condition for which the use of an intravenous infusion is consistent with the standard of care,” the USADA statement read.

Sherdog’s Boxing Pound-for-Pound Top 10

Since we last updated the Boxing Pound-for-Pound Top 10, there have been multiple changes. Some fighters have fallen off, while others have skyrocketed on the rankings ladder. Light heavyweights, middleweights and those hovering around the welterweight limit make up the majority of the list. No matter how you slice it, these guys are the best of the best. 1. Andre “S.O.G.” Ward (31-0, 15 KOs) It looked like “S.O.G.” was set to take the boxing world by storm when he shredded the competition in the Super Six World Boxing Classic between November 2009 and December 2011, but Ward battled injuries and promoters, effectively halting his forward progress. However, he went toe-to-toe with Sergey Kovalev in November, eked past the Russian with a unanimous decision and captured the WBA, IBF and WBO light heavyweight titles. Ward will meet Kovalev in a rematch on June 17 in Las Vegas. 2. Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev (30-1-1, 26 KOs) The knockout machine has mowed down all but a few of his opponents and nearly took out Andre Ward in the second round of their showdown on Nov.

Woodley: ‘I might pass on Demian Maia’ — Here’s Why!

“There are two sets of rules going on,” Woodley said. “There’s traditional, you get the belt, you fight anybody, the No. 1 contenders and it’s a true sport. Then you have the entertainment side where you see Conor McGregor go up a weight class here and there, jumping two different belts, Bisping fighting Georges. All these different things are happening and they make a lot of money, why wouldn’t you want to partake in that? For me, I’m open to fighting Demian Maia, who is the No. 1 contender. I’m also open to a super fight. I’m open to pretty much anything that builds my fighter profile.”

Adonis Stevenson Obliterates Fonfara in Rematch to Retain 175-Pound Title

Boom, stoppage. @AdonisSuperman takes down @andrzej_fonfara in round 2 via TKO. #StevensonFonfara2 — SHOWTIME Boxing (@ShowtimeBoxing) June 4, 2017 Adonis Stevenson vowed to turn Andrzej Fonfara into minced meet in their rematch on Saturday night and he did. “Superman” electrified his hometown fans at the Bell Centre in Montreal as he flattened the Polish challenger in the second round and he made it look rather easy. Stevenson (29-1, 24 KOs) dropped Fonfara in the opening frame with a blistering combo to the head and nearly took him out moments later. Fanfara (29-5, 17 KOs) was resilient enough to hang on and continue, but his fortunes never improved. Stevenson, sensing an early stoppage, swarmed his foe and unloaded a whirlwind of punishment to the head and body as soon as the following frame began, so much so that Fonfara’s trainer Virgil Hunter had to throw in the towel. The official time of the TKO was just 28 ticks into the second round to retain his WBC light heavyweight title. Now the boxing world awaits to see if he’ll fight the winner of Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev later this month.

Opinion: Studies are Neat, but MMA is Still Not Your Dad's Sport

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * This week, the Sports Business Journal published a neat little study on television sports watchers , noting that, surprise surprise, that audience is getting older. Fast fact: did you know the median age of an Ultimate Fighting Championship fan is roughly 49 years old? I thought boxing was what my parents preferred. I thought the UFC was, in fact, “as real as it gets.” Was I mistaken? As interesting as the SBJ's article is, no. You and I, our own perceptions and all existing anecdotal evidence suggest that what we know holds true: middle-aged divorcees in the management class are part of the mixed martial arts landscape, but it's still the 18-34 demographic that runs this sport. MMA may not be “cool” like it was in the Affliction T-shirt era, but MMA is still not “your dad's sport,” at least not necessarily. The study was conducted for the SBJ by Magna Global and measured TV watchers of various sports -- don't you dare not consider professional wrestling a sport -- from 2000 to 2016.

Kazushi Sakuraba Named as Next 2017 UFC Hall of Fame Inductee |

“When I was told about being inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame, my first reaction was surprise,” Sakuraba said. “I stepped into the Octagon 20 years ago and I never could have dreamed that one day I would be invited to join other legends in the UFC Hall of Fame. It has always been my mission, not only to become the best, but to show the world the excitement and glory of MMA. In the process, if I’ve somehow influenced the sport of MMA, it was never in my power to do it alone. I couldn’t have achieved anything without my esteemed opponents, without staff who make events happen, without media who tell our stories, and, most importantly, without the support of the amazing fans. It is my wish to share this honor with everyone in the Japanese martial arts world that, through PRIDE, helped establish a new era in fighting sport.”

Assuncao outpoints Moraes, Carlos Junior earns sub

ASSUNCAO vs. MORAES No. 3-ranked bantamweight contender Raphael Assuncao spoiled the UFC debut of highly-regarded Marlon Moraes Saturday night, snapping his countryman’s 13-fight winning streak via split decision in UFC 212 prelim action at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Scores were 30-27, 29-28 and 28-29. The first round was largely tactical, with Moraes’ superior speed allowing him to take the lead behind his sharp striking. Assuncao wasn’t far behind though, and he closed the gap considerably when he landed two flush right hands in the closing seconds of the frame. The second stanza may have been even closer, with each fighter having his moments as the bout remained standing for the middle five minutes. It was Moraes pushing the pace in the final round, though, with a closing barrage of kicks seemingly allowing him to take the round, but not the fight. Recife’s Assuncao moves to 25-5 with the win; Rio de Janeiro’s Moraes falls to 18-5-1. CARLOS JUNIOR vs. SPICELY In a middleweight clash of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts, Antonio Carlos Junior got the victory, submitting Eric Spicely in the second round.

‘TUF 25’ Recap: Episode 8

Wednesday’s episode will have not one but two fights: the intriguing wild card bout between opening-round losers Joe Stevenson and Hayder Hassan . In keeping with the season’s theme, it’s one last chance for both men to redeem themselves. The first bout of the quarterfinals is also on tap, though the participants have yet to be revealed. Up first is Hassan working in the gym with coach Cody Garbrandt and doing some chaotic fight simulation. The coach is pumping his fighter up beyond belief and he appears to be doing a tremendous job of it. As it seems, Hassan is in excellent shape and is more than ready for his brawl with Stevenson. Out of nowhere, “No Love” and rival coach T.J. Dillashaw are in each other’s faces in the hallway because Dillashaw apparently went on social media and said that Cody is a different cat on the show than when he’s not. Garbrandt is ready to throw figurative hammers at his adversary, but nothing untoward unfolds. From there, it’s time for “Daddy” to get ready for his fight just six days after his last one. Stevenson is well aware of Hassan’s killer punching power and Dillashaw is playing it safe by keeping his stamina up and doing drills that won’t add any damage to his head and body.

Gambling in Glasgow: Free Agency Looms for Stevie Ray

Steven Ray and Paul Craig ’s online war of words made the promotional obligations for UFC Glasgow slightly awkward last week, but there are a lot more pressing issues for Ray as he closes in on his seventh outing under the Ultimate Fighting Championship banner. The former Cage Warriors Fighting Championship ace’s situation is a curious one. Despite claiming the biggest wins of his career in his last two outings over bona fide veterans Ross Pearson and Joe Lauzon , Ray’s stock seemed to be higher after his first two UFC fights against Marcin Bandel and Leonardo Marfa, whom he stopped inside the distance. Mixed martial arts’ fan base appears to value stoppage victories over lesser opposition more than wins over established names, but Ray was confident that UFC’s top brass would appreciate the work he had put in when they sat down to discuss a new contract. Yet, when the offer came in, Ray decided he would gamble and see his current agreement out. “We got an offer, it was back and forth with my manager and UFC,” Ray explained. “It wasn’t really what I was looking for money-wise.

Replay! UFC Fighter Erupts Brazilian Crowd With Post-Fight Interview

UFC’s Brian Kelleher earned an impressive victory at Saturday’s UFC 214. The mixed martial artist submitted Iuri Alcantara in front of his opponent’s home crowd in Brazil. However, the crowd were not truly off of their feet until Kelleher provided his post-fight interview. After defeating Alcantara, Kelleher was met with a roaring crowd of boos. The fighter made a shout out to UFC President Dana White. “Dana, that’s No. 13 in a row. I just took No. 13 out. I want a top 10 guy. I don’t want this slow pace. Feed me to the sharks. I’m ready.” He said. The fighter also spurred on the crowd by mimicking, in Portuguese, the infamous “you’re gonna die”chant, while adding a lengthy “shhhh” to the statement. The fighter’s post-fight interview can be seen below. SAY IT WITH YOUR CHEST! @brianboom135's unafraid of the home crowd and lets @danawhite know how he feels! #UFC212 — FOX Sports: UFC (@UFCONFOX) June 4, 2017 Jose Aldo was removed from power and forcefully so. Max Holloway became the third undisputed featherweight titleholder in Ultimate Fighting Championship history, as he disposed of Aldo with punches in the third round of their UFC 212 main event on Saturday at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. Holloway drew the curtain 4:13 into Round 3, as he took his place on the throne at 145 pounds. Aldo fought well in spurts: According to preliminary FightMetric data, he outlanded the Hawaiian in each of the first two rounds, 19-12 in the first and 29-28 in the second. However, he holstered one of his most trusted and devastating weapons, the 30-year-old Nova Uniao standout throwing only one leg kick across more than 14 minutes of combat. Holloway decked him with a two-punch combination in the third round, climbed into top position and cut loose with ground-and-pound -- he paused briefly for an attempt at a rear-naked choke -- until referee John McCarthy intervened. In the aftermath of UFC 212 “Aldo vs. Holloway,” here are five matches that ought to be made: Max Holloway vs.

UFC 212 Bonuses: Holloway, Aldo, Gadelha, Kelleher Capture $50K Awards

UFC 212 featured a changing of the guard in the featherweight division, and both the old and new champion were rewarded for their efforts. Max Holloway and Jose Aldo received “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their their entertaining clash in Saturday’s main event at Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro. While Aldo set the tone early with a burst of punches in the first frame, Holloway gradually found his footing and took control as the bout progressed. The Hawaiian dropped Aldo with a two-punch combination in the third round, and aggressively pursued the finish from there, eventually forcing a stoppage with unanswered blows on his turtled foe at the 4:13 mark. Elsewhere, Claudia Gadelha garnered a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for her dominant triumph over recent strawweight title challenger Karolina Kowalkiewicz . Gadelha landed a takedown halfway through the opening frame, took her opponent’s back and secured the fight-ending rear-naked choke at the 3:03 mark of the period. Finally, underdog Brian Kelleher captured the evening’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for his first-round submission of Iuri Alcantara in a preliminary bantamweight affair.
