UFC Fight Night 111 Prelims: Jon Tuck Choke Submits Shopworn Takanori Gomi in Singapore

RNC submission a minute into the first by @JonCruzTuck to defeat "The Fireball Kid"!! #UFCSingapore — UFC (@ufc) June 17, 2017 Jon Tuck now has a signature name on his resume. Tuck submitted former Pride Fighting Championships and Shooto titleholder Takanori Gomi with a first-round rear-naked choke in the featured UFC Fight Night 111 “Holm vs. Correia” prelim on Saturday at Singapore Indoor Stadium in Kallang, Singapore. Gomi (35-13) tapped 72 seconds into Round 1, the Japanese legend suffering his fourth straight defeat. A front kick to the body doubled over “The Fireball Kid” and cleared Tuck’s path. The 29-year-old Guam native backed Gomi to the fence and advanced to the back. He set one hook and then another before snaking his arms in place for the choke. Submission soon became Gomi’s only option. Tuck (10-4) in victory threw the brakes on a two-fight losing streak. Ex-UFC Fighter Josh Grispi Sentenced to 5 1/2 Years in Prison on Multiple Charges

Former UFC and WEC fighter Josh Grispi will go to prison on charges stemming from what one Massachusetts police officer called “the worst case of domestic abuse I’ve ever seen.” According to a report from the Hingham Patch , Grispi was found guilty of seven counts of improper storage of a firearm, five counts of assault and battery, two counts of threatening to commit a crime, eight counts of witness intimidation, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, malicious damage to a motor vehicle, and attempt to procure perjury. After a five-day trial and five hours of jury deliberation, Grispi was sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison and five years’ probation. The district attorney’s office had been seeking eight to 10 years in state prison for Grispi. On Aug. 1, 2014, Middleboro, Mass., police responded to the Grispi residence on a tip of domestic abuse, where they found three handguns, two rifles, an assault rifle and a Sig Sauer .45-caliber handgun. The firearms had not been stored or secured properly and Grispi did not have an updated license to carry.

Former UFC Heavyweight Tim Hague Dies After Boxing Knockout |

Hague was knocked out out by Adam Braidwood in the second round after being knocked down several times. As he fell to the ground, Hague’s head violently bounced off the canvas. He regain consciousness and was transported to a hospital after being evaluated backstage. He was placed in the intensive care unit and underwent surgery to relieve pressure surrounding his brain. On Saturday, it was reported that the Alberta native was on life support and brain dead.

Sherdog Forums Chat Recap: Lorenz Larkin

Lorenz Larkin made the decision in March to jump from the Ultimate Fighting Championship to Bellator MMA , joining other fights like Phil Davis , Rory MacDonald , Matt Mitrione and Valerie Letourneau . The 30-year-old Riverside, California, native will challenge Douglas Lima for the welterweight championship in his promotional debut at Bellator 180 this Saturday at Madison Square Garden in New York. Larkin competed in multiple weight classes before settling in at 170 pounds. A failed encounter with Muhammed Lawal in 2012 prompted a move from light heavyweight to middleweight, and losses to Francis Carmont , Brad Tavares , Costas Philippou and Derek Brunson resulted in his decision to downshift to welterweight. Larkin has no regrets about the path he took. “I think everything happens for a reason,” he said in the latest installment of the Sherdog Forums Q&A series , “and if I didn’t go through everything, who knows, I might not be at welterweight.” The Millennia MMA export owns victories over former UFC welterweight champion Robbie Lawler , “The Ultimate Fighter 16” semifinalist Neil Magny and two American Top Team reps: Jorge Masvidal and Santiago Ponzinibbio .

Holly Holm Expected Boos As She Awaited ‘Clean Shot’ Against Bethe Correia

The journey might have been a little bit tedious, but the final destination was well worth the trip. That was Holly Holm ’s evening in a nutshell at UFC Fight Night 111 in Singapore. For two rounds, Holm and opponent Bethe Correia cautiously circled, feinted and basically did everything but land meaningful offense in their main event bout. At one point, the two combatants were even warned by referee Marc Goddard for their refusal to engage. While an outside observer might have seen timidity, Holm was watching a game plan unfold. That’s why the boos coming from inside Singapore Indoor Stadium had little effect on the Albuquerque, N.M., native. “One of the goals for this fight was to not let it look messy. A lot of times that’s her style is to make it a brawl and make it look messy. I wanted it to be clean,” Holm said. “I’m not happy with even letting her land a couple shots in the second round. I wanted to pick a clean shot. I wanted to do it right. The game plan was not to rush anything. We knew the crowd might boo. That’s the type of game plan the crowd might boo, and we knew that.

UFC Singapore By the Numbers

Holly Holm got back to what made her famous in the Ultimate Fighting Championship . After two underwhelming rounds, the former bantamweight queen brought her UFC Fight Night 111 “Holm vs. Correia” headlining matchup with Bethe Correia to an emphatic end, melting the Brazilian with a head kick and one follow-up uppercut 1:09 into the third stanza in Singapore on Saturday. It was Holm’s first Octagon triumph since her landmark knockout of Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 -- a victory that was also triggered by a ringing head kick. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC Fight Night 111, with statistics courtesy of 2: Knockout victories stemming from head kicks in UFC competition for Holm, making her the first woman in promotion history to earn two such triumphs. 32: Combined significant strikes landed by Holm and Correia in the bout’s first 10 minutes. The Jackson-Wink MMA staple outlanded Correia 7 to 5 in round one and 12 to 8 in round two. 6: Significant strikes landed by Holm in the decisive third stanza.

Boxing: Andre Ward Stops Sergey Kovalev in Eighth to Retain Light Heavyweight Titles

#WardKovalev2 - Ward finishes the fight. What are your thoughts on the stoppage here? — Jim Edwards (@MMA_Jim) June 18, 2017 Andre Ward proved to the world that he is not only the best light heavyweight in the world, but also the No.1 pound-for-pound boxer when he stopped rival Sergey Kovalev in the eighth round in Las Vegas. Ward (32-0, 16 KOs) fought tooth and nail with his Russian counterpart as they connected with powerful punches to the head and waged a war of attrition on the inside. Each round in the duel was as close as they come as Kovalev was largely the aggressor behind his jab while Ward landed scattered blows between constant clinching. Ward’s style frustrated “Krusher” early and often, reducing him to being able to land only single blows for much of the contest and slowly depleting his gas tank. With both men lumped up around the eyes in the eighth, Kovalev appeared to be coming on in the second half of the fight. But a wicked right hook to the stomach hurt Kovalev, who unsuccessfully protested to referee Tony Weeks that it was low.

UFC Fight Night 111 Bonuses: Holm, Sasaki, Li, Camacho Earn $50K Awards

It took her a while to get warmed up, but Holly Holm ’s patience paid off — literally. The former bantamweight queen earned a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for her third-round knockout of Bethe Correia in the UFC Fight Night 111 headliner in Singapore on Saturday. After two slow-paced rounds, Correia taunted “The Preacher’s Daughter” and paid the price for it. Moments later, Holm floored her Brazilian foe with a beautifully-placed head kick and clinched the victory with a follow-up uppercut 1:09 into round three. Elsewhere, Yuta Sasaki captured the card’s other $50,000 “Performance of the Night” award for his come-from-behind triumph over Justin Scoggins in a preliminary flyweight tilt. Scoggins was in control early, suplexing his foe and flooring him with a left hand in round one. That dominance continued in the second stanza until Sasaki was able to sweep into mount, take his man’s back and secure a rear-naked choke to elicit a tapout at the 3:19 mark. Finally, Jingliang Li and Frank Camacho garnered “Fight of the Night” honors and $50,000 apiece for their preliminary welterweight duel.

Colby Covington Sends Warning to Welterweight Division: ‘This is the Embarrassment Tour’

Perhaps the most confident fighter to emerge from UFC Fight Night 111 in Singapore on Saturday was rising welterweight talent Colby Covington . The American Top Team representative was suffocating in his showdown with Dong Hyun Kim , landing eight takedowns and controlling virtually all the grappling exchanges with the South Korean judoka. The end result was a dominant unanimous decision win that included 30-25 and 30-26 scorecards from the cageside judges. The only other people to beat Kim in UFC competition: current champion Tyron Woodley , top contender Demian Maia and former interim titlist Carlos Condit . “He hasn’t lost to anybody outside the Top 5. He’s lost to the champion, the No. 1 contender. No one’s dominated him like that,” Covington said. “I completely dismantled him. I beat him every second of every round. There’s some good things to take away from it, but I’m still improving. You haven’t seen the best Colby Covington yet.” Covington’s grinding style doesn’t always make him a fan favorite, and there were some boos during his bout with Kim, but it is undeniably effective.

“I did want to showcase some of my grappling, because I’ve been working on it a lot,” Caceres said. “I felt like that was one of my biggest holes in my game. So I’ve been filling in that hole with a shovel every single day at practice. I’ve been working on it, man, and I really wanted to show a little bit more of that. I was looking for that submission. I really wanted it. But hey – you’ve got to win with what you can.”

Opinion: McGregor Will Lose, But He's Already Won

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * By now, I'm assuming you've heard about the big fight. Given the nature, importance and sheer spectacle of Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor fighting, there's a million things to be said, nearly infinite sub-conversations to be had. The foremost and obvious topic is, of course, “Can McGregor actually win?” but it's also a question that entirely misses the point of this whole hoopla. In terms of pure math or philosophy, the answer is yes, Conor McGregor could very well win. Come Aug. 26, he may well just walk up to perhaps the greatest pugilist ever, smash him in the snot box with a left hook and turn the world upside down. In practicality, the “Fight of the Century” will likely be exactly the sparring exhibition we've imagined for months, as a faded but still outstanding Mayweather jabs and counters for 12 rounds en route to a decision; you know, a Floyd Mayweather fight.

Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings - Holly Holm Holding Firm at 135

Not all important, resounding wins are created equally. Sometimes a single win could send your stock skyrocketing. Sometimes, even if you author a stirring “Knockout of the Year” contender in an Ultimate Fighting Championship main event, a major victory could mean merely maintaining your place. Safe to say, Holly Holm is holding down her spot in this edition of the official rankings. Holm, our No. 3 bantamweight woman in the world, remains fixed into her position at 135 pounds by virtue of her March 2016 title loss to Miesha Tate and more specifically her five-round decision defeat to top contender Valentina Shevchenko in July. However, on June 17, “The Preacher's Daughter” destroyed former UFC title contender Bethe Correia with, poetically, a Brazilian kick to the head in Kallang, Singapore. Not every moment of the bout was exciting, but the eventual outcome is instructive that the 35-year-old former boxing star's UFC title run and her bantamweight stature are not flukes. The biggest shift in this update does come courtesy of the UFC Fight Night 111 card but in an unexpected fashion.

Opinion: The Cost of Combat

Editor’s note: The views and opinions expressed below are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of, its affiliates and sponsors or its parent company, Evolve Media. * * * Nobody thought the UFC Fight Night 111 showdown between Holly Holm and Bethe Correia on Saturday was going to be the biggest news of the combat sports world. Nor did anyone think that claim would belong to the rematch between Andre Ward and Sergey Kovalev . The most important news to occur recently did not belong exclusively to boxing or mixed martial arts but rather an overlap of the two; and no, I’m not talking about the Floyd Mayweather - Conor McGregor fight. Former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight Tim Hague died on Sunday after getting knocked out in a boxing match in Canada. Hague, 1-2 in boxing and 21-13 in MMA, was knocked out a combined 10 times in his total 15 losses across sports, including both of his boxing losses and each of his last five mixed martial arts bouts. He was 34 years old.
