Chris Weidman, Kelvin Gastelum Trade Words Over Next Title Shot

Now that Ultimate Fighting Championship middleweight king Robert Whittaker has defeated Yoel Romero for the second time at UFC 225 , the remaining Top-5 middleweights are jockeying for position to secure the next title shot. Two of those top middleweights have been trading shots back and forth on social media, each making a case for his own shot at UFC gold while diminishing the other’s accomplishments. Former divisional champ Chris Weidman and Kelvin Gastelum were friendly and polite leading into their fight at UFC on Fox 25 last July, but that good will has been tossed out of the window now that the stakes are higher. Gastelum began the heated exchange on Wednesday, calling Weidman “Chrispy” and challenging his claim to the next title shot on Twitter: Chrispy??? Now it’s argument is simple. I am ranked ahead of YOU and I finished YOU in my last fight. — Chris Weidman (@chrisweidman) June 14, 2018 Weidman submitted “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 17 winner with a third round arm-triangle choke at their meeting last year, but Gastelum did find success early on, dropping the former champion with punches at the end of the first round.

3’s Pound-for-Pound Top 10

Inactivity has caught up to Conor McGregor . Absent from the MMA scene since his historic win over Eddie Alvarez at UFC 205 on Nov. 12, 2016, the former two-division Ultimate Fighting Championship titleholder has surrendered much of the equity he built during his gold rush at 145 and 155 pounds. McGregor’s detour into the boxing world for a blockbuster showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in August brought him untold millions in prize money but also created doubt as to whether or not he would ever return to mixed martial arts. He has done nothing in the 10 months since -- unless one considers his dolly attack on a charter bus full of fighters at UFC 223 a publicity stunt to keep his name in the headlines -- to alleviate the uncertainty surrounding his future in the cage. As a result, McGregor exits the pound-for-pound stage after an extended stay. The “Notorious” Irishman was not the only departure. Former lightweight champion turned welterweight contender Rafael dos Anjos fell short in his bid to capture interim gold at 170 pounds, losing a unanimous decision to Colby Covington in the UFC 225 co-headliner on June 9.

UFC 225 Bonuses: Whittaker, Romero Garner ‘Fight of the Night’ Honors for Classic Battle

No title was at stake in the UFC 225 headliner, but you wouldn’t have known it from the way Robert Whittaker and Yoel Romero fought at the United Center on Saturday night. Whittaker and Romero received “Fight of the Night” honors for their five-round war. However, due to Romero missing weight, Whittaker received the full $100,000 instead of splitting it with his Cuban foe. In a bout filled with momentum swings, Whittaker held on for a split-decision triumph, surviving knockdowns from Romero in round three and five in the process. While “The Reaper” improved to 2-0 against Romero, a trilogy bout wouldn’t be surprising considering the competitive nature of their first two meetings. Elsewhere, Curtis Blaydes garnered a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” check for his third-round technical knockout victory over former title challenger Alistair Overeem in a preliminary heavyweight clash. After controlling the contest through his wrestling, “Razor” Blaydes opened up and finished Overeem with a violent salvo of elbows at the 2:56 mark of the third round.

Donald Trump Jr. Congratulates Colby Covington on UFC Title Win |

Colby Covington has made no secret of his support for controversial U.S. President Donald Trump. In fact, he has exploited Trump’s name in his controversial diatribes, saying that he wants to take his newly won interim UFC welterweight title and present it to the President on his desk at the White House.

By the Numbers: UFC 225

The sequel was an instant classic. While Robert Whittaker outlasted Yoel Romero over five brutal rounds in the UFC 225 headliner on Saturday night, there were no losers in Chicago. Both combatants battled through adversity at various times to put on a memorable show, but it was reigning 185-pound king Whittaker who emerged with a contentious split-decision triumph. While “The Reaper” improved to 2-0 against his Cuban rival, nobody would complain if the middleweights squared off for a third time down the road. That, however, is a topic for another day. Here is a by-the-numbers look at UFC 225, with statistics courtesy of Related » Matches to Make After UFC 225 9: Consecutive victories in the Octagon for Whittaker, the sixth-longest active winning streak in the UFC behind Demetrious Johnson (13), Georges St. Pierre (13), Max Holloway (12), Khabib Nurmagomedov (10) and Tony Ferguson (10). 239: Combined significant strikes landed by Whittaker (128) and Romero (111), a middleweight record for a five-round bout in the UFC.

Andre Ewell Brabo Choke Taps Dinis Paiva, Brings Vacant CES MMA Bantamweight Crown

Dinis Paiva vs Andre Ewell #CES50 — ZombieProphet (@GIFsByZP) June 16, 2018 Andre Ewell made the most of the narrowest of openings. The Apex MMA representative countered a takedown attempt with a tight brabo choke and submitted hometown favorite Dinis Paiva to capture the vacant CES MMA bantamweight championship in the third round of their CES 50 headliner on Friday at Twin River Casino in Lincoln, Rhode Island. Ewell (13-4, 1-0 CES MMA) brought it to a close 36 seconds into Round 3. Paiva (11-7, 11-7 CES MMA) staggered the King of the Cage veteran with a left cross and kept him off-balance with repeated takedowns in the first round. That set the stage for the remarkable second. Ewell rattled the Team Sityodtong standout with a multi-punch burst and opened a cut near his right eye, as he appeared to seize momentum. However, Paiva bounced back late in the frame and nearly submitted the Californian with a rear-naked choke in the waning moments, their back-and-forth struggle for supremacy bringing the crowd to a boil. When Paiva shot for another takedown at the start of the third round, Ewell was waiting -- and ready.

Matches to Make After UFC 225

Whether you approach him with love, hate or indifference, Colby Covington has entered a new competitive stratosphere in the Ultimate Fighting Championship . The polarizing American Top Team standout executed repeated takedowns and captured the interim welterweight title with a five-round unanimous decision over Rafael dos Anjos in the UFC 225 co-headliner on Saturday at the United Center in Chicago. All three cageside judges scored it for Covington, awarding him marks of 49-46, 48-47 and 48-47. Covington took down Dos Anjos seven times in the 25-minute battle: twice in the first round, twice in the second, once in the fourth and twice more in the fifth. It provided the difference in a fight that was otherwise closely contested. According to FightMetric figures, the top-shelf welterweights split the striking categories. Covington outlanded his counterpart 142-130 in total strikes, while dos Anjos held a narrow 105-99 margin in significant strikes. Tyron Woodley Responds to Colby Covington: ‘You Were and Always Will Be My Warm-Up Round’

It appears now that Tyron Woodley is ready to answer Colby Covington ’s challenge – not that he has much of a choice anymore. Covington claimed the interim welterweight crown with a with a five-round verdict over Rafael dos Anjos in the UFC 225 co-main event at the United Center in Chicago on Saturday night. Covington, who has been angling with a matchup with Woodley for quite some time, continued to target the undisputed 170-pound king after the victory. “This moment is exactly what I dreamed of. This is what I’ve been saying all week, to all the media, to all the fans. This is my moment and nobody can say anything about it. I’m the new money fight in UFC,” Covington said. “Tell Tyron Woodley that his time is up. This is the real belt. He was supposed to be the one fighting me tonight and he wouldn’t show up. I’m the welterweight champion. I’m the new king here.” Woodley, who was last seen taking a five-round verdict over Demian Maia at UFC 214 in July, didn’t take long to respond to his antagonist and onetime American Top Team stablemate.

Ex-champ Rashad Evans, undecided on retirement, 'at peace' with KO loss

At one time FIGHTING was bigger than LIFE. Now LIFE is bigger than FIGHTING. It was easy to FIGHT for me because I came into this world raising hell FIGHTING. Then LIFE over time swaddled me like a parent does a screaming child and calmed me until I could see there was nothing to scream about. LIFE reveals to us all one day its beauty and its GRACE. Part of its beauty and GRACE is SURRENDER. Not SURRENDER in the way we think but a yielding nature that allows LIFE’S true beauty to be seen without non attachment. Only through non attachment can we truly see the beauty of LIFE and its random but beautiful balance. Our attachments in LIFE gives us the pain that make LIFE unbearable at times. Those attachments keeps us all pretending to some degree even though we are scared to death of what tomorrow can bring. I am at peace at what happened last night. I am a true FIGHTER at heart and there is no greater peace than when I get a chance to bare my soul for millions to see. 24 times I was successful and I experienced heights I never would’ve dreamed were possible and 8 times I came up short.

The MMA Hall of F@#$%&g Awesome: Enson Inoue

Jorge Masvidal Eviscerates Neil Magny, Kamaru Usman While Looking for Fight

Jorge Masvidal is having trouble getting a fight, and now “Gamebred” is targeting every Top 5 welterweight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship in order to get one. Masvidal continued his campaign in eviscerating the entire welterweight division, taking aim at Kamaru Usman and Neil Magny in particular, all in an effort to finally get another fight. “ I’m going to get somebody at some point or another, whether it be a top-10 guy or not. Somebody’s face is going to get dismantled .” Gamebred hasn’t fought once yet this year after ending 2017 on a disappointing two-fight losing streak. However, one of those losses was a split decision defeat to perennial top five welterweight Demain Maia and the other was a decision loss to Stephen Thompson . Prior to those losses, Masvidal earned perhaps the biggest victory of his entire mixed martial arts career after stopping Donald Cerrone , snapping his four-fight winning streak and becoming the first man to beat him at 170 pounds. Masvidal and Magny have developed quite the feud lately, with Magny calling out the “unprofessional slob” back in May.

Jeff Horn No Match for Terence Crawford

“He didn’t seem like the smaller guy, that’s for sure.” – @JeffHornBoxer #CrawfordHorn — Top Rank Boxing (@trboxing) June 10, 2018 Only a month ago the boxing world was convinced that Vasily Lomachenko was the best fighter in the world, the pound-for-pound king who would reign unrivaled as the best prizefighter in the world for years to come. Tonight, Terence Crawford challenged that narrative in being completely unchallenged by Jeff Horn . In his first ever fight at welterweight (147), Crawford thoroughly dominated Horn, winning every round and flooring the Australian en route to a 9th-round TKO victory. The fight was never close, as Crawford staggered Horn with a straight left hand from a southpaw stance almost immediately, setting the tone for a night where Horn’s toughness and courage would be commended but his ring skills wouldn’t. For the rest of the fight, Crawford showboated, switched stances, and consistently landed clean, hard punches on his far slower opponent before finally forcing referee Robert Byrd to stop the fight by teeing off on Horn after he got up from a knockdown.
